Creating VirtualDeviceSet For Remote SQL Server 2005 Failed.
Mar 13, 2007
Hi, all!
I am writing the VDI application to allow backup/restore MS SQL Server 2005. I would want to backup/restore remote servers as well as local. I have local instance of MS SQL 2005 and remote. Local instance has MSSQL2005_ZORG instance name, remote uses default (so it supposed to be MSSQLSERVER).
While connection to those server via SQL Server Management studio i see local server as "ZORGMSSQL2005_ZORG" and remote as "VM2000SRVZ2".
When i try to create VIrtualDeviceSet via CreateEx i pass "MSSQL2005_ZORG" as lpInstanceName parameter and all works fine. But I could't create same device set for remote 'MSSQLSERVER' instance. I passed any combination for that, such as "VM2000SRVZ2MSSQLSERVER", "MSSQLSERVER", "VM2000SRVZ2", "\VM2000SRVZ2MSSQLSERVER" and so on. No luck always get VD_E_INSTANCE_NAME (0x80770007).
Any idea?

Hi all,
In my office computer network system (LAN), my Windows XP Pro PC has SQL Server Express and VB 2005 Express installed and I was granted to have the Administrator priviledge to access SQL Server Express. I tried to create a SQLCLR project in my terminal PC.
1) I tried to set up a remote connection to SQL Server Express in the following way: SQL Server EXpress => SQL Server Surface Area Configuration. In the Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connection - local, I clicked on Remote Connection of Database Engine, SQLEXPRESS and I had a "dot" on "Local and remote connections" and "Using TCP/IP only". Then I clicked on "Apply" and "OK" buttons. Then I went to restart my database engine in SQL Server Management. When I went to check SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration, I saw the arrow is pointing to "Service", not to "Remote Connections"!!!??? Is it right/normal? Please comment on this matter and tell me how I can have "Remote Connecton" on after I selected it.
2) After I restarted the database engine (I guess!!), I executed the following project code (copied from a book) in my VB 2005 Express:

I followed the steps outlined in a blog I found to setup SS2005 express for remote connections. Everything appeared to go smooth until I actually tried to logon ;)
I have Sql Server 2005 Express installed on my WinXP PRO machine at home (no domain). I have opened the ports on the firewall, etc.
When I try and login from the SQLCMD command line tool I get a Login Failed error. Here is the connection string that I'm trying to use:
SQLCMD -S **.***.**.*SQLEXPRESS -U Steve -P MyPassword
The error:
Login failed for user 'Steve'.
When I use Management Studio Express on the same machine running Sql Server, it shows the User name: NEVERSTILLSteve
'NEVERSTILL' is the name of my computer.
If I try and use that same username with a remote connection I get the same error.
I have googled for the error and msg code, but nothing fitting my situation is coming up.
Anyone have any ideas for me?

Dear all,
I now have 2 server, say serverA and serverB. ServerA has a SQL server and I am using a command in the SQL server to access the serverB. The command is:
declare @command varchar(500)
set @command = 'mkdir ' + '"\serverBabckevin_wong123"
exit'
exec master.dbo.XYRunProc
'cmd.exe',
'c:',
@command
where abc is a shared folder in serverB which can be accessed by serverA. However the output of this execution is "c:> mkdir "\serverBabckevin_wong123" Access is denied". It is possible to do this in command prompt. Does anyone know what's the problem of this?
Thank you very much!!

Hi,
i created a SSIS package to import data to a remote sql server, using the following connection string:
"Data Source=My-SQL;User ID=PortalUser;Password=Password;Initial Catalog=TestOMIWarehouse;Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Auto Translate=True;";
and got an error "Login failed".
When i give PortalUser a sysadmin server role, it works. But i don't want to give PortalUser a sysadmin role. Any suggestions? Is sysadmin role required to access a remote server using Sql server authentication?
thanks! Any help would be appreciated.

I can't access SQL Server 2008 R2 remotely on Windows 2008
1. TCP/IP Enabled for SQL Server Network Configuration Protocols, SQL Native Client 10.0 configuration clients, and SQL Native Client 10.0 configuration clients(32 bit)
2. Firewall disabled to make sure its not interferring with things.
I noticed the SQL Server Agent is Stopped. Not sure if this is the issue. When I try and turn this from disabled to Automatic or Manual, I get this error:
Remote procedure call failed (0x800706be)
It shouldn't be this difficult.

Hopefully there's an easy answer for this. I'm totally new to SQL server and I'm trying to upsize an Access database. Whether I use the upsizing wizard or try to create a data source through the ODBC Data Source Administrator, I get a connection failed error. It tells me the server does not exist or my login is incorrect. I'm using NT authentication to connect to the server on my local drive. I just installed the whole 2005 express edition and the only thing that came up during the install was that I didn't have IIS installed. I didn't see how that would be relevant, so I went ahead with the install.
Shouldn't this work with the default setup? I've searched around trying different "solutions" although I doubt they were specifically related to this very basic problem. I tried giving my login every right I could find through in the database engine properties in the server management studio, which connects fine itself with just my network login name and no password. What am I missing?

Hello, How are you?
I have a problem when I try to create a new connection with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition from Visual Studio 2005 IDE. When I€™m going to choose the data source, the SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition provider doesn€™t appear in the list. I installed the SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition from this page http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=%2085E0C3CE-3FA1-453A-8CE9-AF6CA20946C3&displaylang=en. In the additional information says by installing SQLServerCE31-EN.msi installs the provider (System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll) in the GAC (global assembly cache) and registers the OLEDB provider (sqlceoledb30.dll). So, I don€™t understand why couldn€™t I create a new connection with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition from Visual Studio 2005 IDE?
I appreciate your help€¦

Just installed SQL Server 2005 and tested my old VS 2005 ASPnet websites, which were connected toSQL Server 2000 databases before. All my websites were created for local HTTP applications, coded with a connection string with User ID and Password. The SQL Server 2000 was configured as mixed authentication (i.e. with User ID and Password). These websites worked very well with SQL Server 2000 database server.Testing my old VS 2005 websites with SQL Server 2005 database, showed a 'Login failed for a User ''.' error msgalthough the 'Test Connection' on VS 2005 design showed a perfect query for e.g. a GridView control. I have assured that the UserID/Password were correct for Management Studio Security object'slogin and Database Security's user. The server instance was configured with mixed authentication mode. One thing I am not sure of is, when clicking the Management Studio icon, a Connection dialog showed up, asking for a Windows or MIxed authentication? I just stayed with the Windows authentication. What does the authenticationmode have anything to do with the VS 2005 website connection? Should I change to mixed authetnication mode?TIA,Jeffrey

My site works fine in VWD2008 express, but I get this error when I try to use it on my live website.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
According to this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277 I am supposed to:
1.
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, point to Configuration Tools, and then click SQL Server Surface Area Configuration.
Ok, there is no such program in this folder. The only thing in there is "SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting"...
The other thing I am greatly concerned with is this: All is want is for my webpages to be able to access my database for user authentication. I DO NOT want to grant the internet rights to remote connect to my database.

When I try to open database table under database explorer in VWD 2005

and the connection will be closed.
When I try to right click on my database's file name under database
explorer and click connection to set the connection setting and click
on "Test Connection", it says the same thing.
This happen sometime, but after I restart my computer, I am able to access my database file again.
Anybody have any idea what's going on?

Hello Friends:
My problem relates to backing up my MS SQL 2005 database which is sitting on a shared server at a hosting company.
OVERVIEW:
- Hosting company is using MS SQL 2005
- I am using the SQL Server Management Studio that comes with SQL Server 2005 Standard (NOT Express), which is installed on MY PC.
- So, I am connecting to the SQL server over the internet
WHAT I WANT TO ACHIEVE:
- I would like to backup the data sitting on the Hosting company's MS SQL Server. I only have one database on this SQL Server. There are of course 100s of other databases on the same server which belong to other customers of the hosting company.
- I want to bring the backup to MY PC, from the SQL Server.
- As far as I can tell the following options within SQL Server Management Studio may be of help to me. I do not know which one I should use or which one is best or what is the proper method. 1) Select Backup option from the Tasks menu (but it only shows me drives/devices on the Hosting SQL Server, not my PC, so I can’t backup to my PC) 2) Export Data (it does not work, showing errors ‘…not a trusted connection…’ I have no clue what a trusted connection is. 3) Copy Database (which is supposed to copy the remote database on the Hosting company SQL server, to my local SQL Server running on my PC). I go through the wizard, on the last screen it just hangs i.e. shows- not responding)
MY QUESTION TO THE COMMUNITY:
How do I backup the database sitting on the hosting company SQL server? I of course need to bring the backup to my PC.

I'm using SQL Server 2005 version 9.00.1399.00, not the Express version. Should I update the SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration in SQL Server Configuation Manager? But I don't know what should be set to "Enable" or Disabled". Is any other place need be configured?
Thanks.

I am new to SQL Server and need to understand how to run DTS packages (SSIS) in SQL 2005 from a remote server? In other words run them from another server from where the database is installed.
I am looking for any links on the subject, guidance on how to set this up and how to use it.
Regards,
Lee

I have set up a SQL Server 2005 to use for testing before moving to another production server. The server works fine when I connect to it with a program on the same computer but not when accessed remotely.
I have set it to to allow remote connections and use TCP IP only and have opened TCP port 1433 on the Windows XP firewall and am using the Teredo service on Port UDP 3544 Also the Server Browser service is running. The server is connected directly to the internet on a static IP (eg. 67.156.18.167) I have set the server to Windows authentication.
When I try to connect to the database from a data grid in Visual Studio on another computer it fails.
I am pretty surethat the problem is that I am not giving the correct information when asked to fill in the information for the data source to find the server as I am new to remote connections in SQL Server.
Thanks for any insight

I have an application developed by VB.NET 2005, and I need to install the Data base on a server to allow the clients access the data base from thier own computers, i need to allow all the functions on that data base (Insert, Update, and Delete).
I tried to do it by installing the SQL Server on a computer named (PC1) and the application on a computer named (PC2), and they are connected to the same subnet, I need to know what are the properties that I should do on the SQL Server in order to be visible through PC1 to make the connection string? And does the authintication mode affect the process?? whether it is Windows authintication or SQL Server Authintication??
Note: I am using SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition.
Thanking you in advance..

I am an application developer with an existing system developer in SQL Server 2005 Express and Visual Studio 2005.
I have installed the system I wrote at a physician's office, and it is working fine on a local computer utilizing XP operating system.
There is a requirement to allow other terminals to connect to this XP terminal to execute the application, so I am exploring possibilities for connecting remotely from the other computers in the physician's office.
I am running Virtual Machine for my client computer.
I modified SQL Server 2005 on my main computer. I enabled both TCP/IP and Named pipes in the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration utility. I also set SQL Server Browser to start automatically.
The local application is successfully connecting with the following connectionstring: Data Source=localhostsqlexpress;Initial Catalog=MedicalDB;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=sa;Password=thepassword
I realize that I would have to substitute the server name for localhost before I could connect from the application, but I wanted to first "connect" to the database from my second machine successfully before I began trying to connect from my application. I can Ping the pc that is running sql server express, I am able to "telnet" my pc that is running SQL Server Express.
Both my computers are in the same workgroup and there is no domain.
There are no aliases in my configuration, and there is no encryption on the server.
Ther error message I recieve is:
Cannot connect to DDD
An error has occurred while attempting connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (providor: Named Pipes Providor, Error: 40 Could not open a conneciton to Sql Server) (Microsofi SQL Server, Error: 1326)

This has probably been answered before, but...
I have a local SQL Server 2005 instance running, and I would like to have another user on my network connect to this instance. However, when he tries to connect, he always receives the same error message:
"An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error 28: - Server doesnt' support requested protocol)"
So, I checked the properties for the server, and under the connections tab the allow remote connection box is checked.
Any clue where to look next?

Hello ,
The problem is that we are having Problem while making the remote Connection to the Sql Server 2005
Basically We are having a problem connecting to SQL2005 through a package remotely. when we try to connect to a remote data base, we get the following error
[Connection manager "CRA LRRS Development DB"] Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "Login timeout expired". An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.". An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description: "SQL Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]. ".
Although by running the configuration manager on the Remote DataBase System we have enable the Remote Connections through name and IP both but still it cant access it.
Please tell us the possible consequences and provide us the feedback.
I will be really obliged if any of you can provide us the feedback on it as soon as possible.
Thanking You,
Yours Sincerely,
Saima Salim
