Is it possible to create a cursor out of the results of a stored procedure.
OR
Is it possible to get just one value.
EXEC sp_columns @table_name = 'tablename', @column_name='columnname'

Need a little help here.
I have a set of product ids fed in as a delimited string and for each I need to extract the top 1 record from another query based on the id.
I need the results as one table.
Here is my code.
___________________________________
SET NOCOUNT ON
DECLARE @IdsString VARCHAR(255), @Id int
SELECT @IdsString = '918|808|1214|89|995|300|526|1207'
DECLARE GetData CURSOR
FOR Select s.ProductID FROM dbo.SplitProductIDs(@IdsString) as s
OPEN GetData
FETCH NEXT FROM GetData
INTO @Id
WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0
BEGIN
SELECT TOP 1 v.*
FROM dbo.GetProductRateView as v
WHERE v.[id] = @Id
FETCH NEXT FROM GetData
INTO @Id
END
CLOSE GetData
DEALLOCATE GetData

Do I need to create a temp table and do an 'Insert Into(Select...' with each cusor result or is there a better way?
Any help would be much appreciated.
NB Database was not designed and the client will not tolerate any changes to structure of the tables :eek:

Just upgraded from 6.5 to 7 and in query analyzer I get double spaced results on queries that previously single-spaced. Installed 2000 QA and still get same results. Is there a setting that we are missing or a workaround to this?
Note ==> The cursor query returns single spaced results when ran alone.
Test code below:
DECLARE @pol char(10)
DECLARE testcursor CURSOR FOR
SELECT policy_no FROM policy_history
WHERE policy_chg_end_dt is null and policy_deleted_sw = 0
OPEN testcursor
FETCH NEXT FROM testcursor INTO @pol
WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS <> -1
BEGIN
SELECT @pol
FETCH NEXT FROM testcursor INTO @pol
END
CLOSE testcursor
DEALLOCATE testcursor

I'm working on a procedure that needs to cycle through the records of some raw data and combine the the current record with the datetime field of the prior record. I have been able to write a script to do that with cursors and variables but my problem is it returns each record separately. How do I go about getting the procedure to return all the records as one set of data?
To see what I mean, the following script for the Pubs DB returns each pass through the data as a seperate query. Since I can't do a select *, what approach should I take? If you want the actual script, I would be happy to provide it.
DECLARE authors_cursor CURSOR
FOR SELECT * FROM authors
OPEN authors_cursor
FETCH NEXT FROM authors_cursor
WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0
begin
FETCH NEXT FROM authors_cursor
end
Close Authors_cursor
deallocate authors_cursor
Thanks in advance

The problem I'm having is that I need a cursor to return multiple results into 1 .NET System.Data.DataTable, and I don't know if it's possible. Actually, the real problem I'm having is that whoever designed this database did a poor job and if it weren't for one small thing I could do this all with aggregates...
But more specifically, this is what I need to accomplish. I have written a cursor that I know works - when I run it in MS SQL Query Analyzer, I get the results I want, but it's returned in multiple tables. I am maintaining a .NET application with some pretty lousy performance and I'm trying to boost it up. I need to take the cursor's results, stuff them into a DataTable, and then return that table to my web application to render.
In my C# code, I am using a SqlDataAdapter to execute my query. This is what I'd like to do...
/*assume query is my working cursor, InvoiceDBConnection is not null, and dt is an empty, non-null DataTable*/
SqlDataAdapter sda = new SqlDataAdapter(query, InvoiceDBConnection);
sda.Fill(dt);
... but this doesn't work, and it makes sense, I guess...since the cursor returns multiple "tables" (not sure if that's actually how the data is returned).
So is there any way to accomplish what I want to do? Or do I have to do it the crappy way it's done now by running my aggregate query and then using a really time-consuming for loop on my results to make the necessary adjustment?
Any help is greatly appreciated

So I've created a bit of code to remove some virus garbage that's been plaguing some of my clients, but it seems since I've tried using a cursor to streamline the process a bit it's just filling in the fields with nulls.
Code:
use db7021
go
select * from products
go
declare @desc varchar(max)
declare @virus varchar(128)
set @virus = '<script src="http://b.njnk.net/E/J.JS"></script>'
declare @start int
declare @end int
declare thecursor CURSOR LOCAL SCROLL_LOCKS
for select cdescription from products
where cdescription like ('%' + @virus + '%')
for update of cdescription
open thecursor
fetch next from thecursor into @desc
while @@FETCH_STATUS = 0
begin
print @desc
set @start = charindex(@virus, @desc)
set @end = @start + len(@virus)
print cast(@start as char) + ', ' + cast(@end as char)
set @desc = left(@desc, @start - 1) + right(@desc, len(@desc)-@end+1)
update products
set cdescription = @desc
where current of thecursor
fetch next from thecursor into @desc
end
close thecursor
deallocate thecursor
select * from products
go
Which produces the output:
Code:

id cname cdescription
----------- ------------ ------------
1 banana NULL
2 apple NULL
3 lolcat NULL
4 cheezburgr NULL

I trimmed out alot of whitespace from the results for the sake of readability, but aside from that this is everything I've got. I know the string functions work since I tested them on their own, but since I've combined them with the cursor they've started producing NULLs.
Maybe I've missed something in the syntax for cursors?

SQL7 SP3
Hi.
I have a table in which I want to create a delimited list of values from one field which I will be using for validation.
How can I do this without using a cursor to build the string. The SQL would be something like:
SELECT *
FROM myCrossRefTable
WHERE SourceTable = 'FieldValueList'
I'm looking to return on string like -
~value1~value2~value3~value4~value5
Thanks,

I appear to be having an issue where the @LetterVal and @Numeric variables aren't resetting for each loop iteration, so if no results are found, it just returns the previous loops values since they aren't overwritten. Below is the stored procedure I've created:
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[ap_CalcGrade]
-- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here
@studId int,
@secId int,
@grdTyCd char(2),
@grdCdOcc int,
@Numeric int output,
[Code] ....
And below is the "test query" I'm using:
-- *** Test Program ***
Declare @LetterVal varchar(2), -- Letter Grade
@Numeric int, -- Numeric Grade
@Result int -- Procedure Status (0 = OK)
Execute @Result = dbo.ap_CalcGrade 102, 86, 'QZ', 3,
[Code] ....
This is resulting in an output of:
A+ 97
A+ 97
C- 72
but it should be returning the output below due to the 2nd data set not being valid/found in the sp query:
A+ 97
No Find
C- 72
I'm sure this is sloppy and not the most efficient way of doing this, so whats causing the errant results, and if there is any better way I should be writing it. Below is the assignment requirements:
Create a stored procedure using the STUDENT database called ap_CalcGrade that does the following:
1. Accepts as input STUDENT_ID, SECTION_ID, GRADE_TYPE_CODE, and GRADE_CODE_OCCURRENCE
2. Outputs the numeric grade and the letter grade back to the user
3. If the numeric grade is found, return 0, otherwise return 1
4. You must use a cursor to loop through the GRADE_CONVERSION table to find the letter grade

I have this query;
select c.name
FROM sys.tables AS t
INNER JOIN sys.columns c
ON t.OBJECT_ID = c.OBJECT_ID
where t.name= 'Hosea_tblDATA_NOTES'and c.is_identity = 0
order by column_id
and I get these results;
NOTE_ID
NOTE_DESCRIPTION
NOTE_TEXT
NOTE_STATUS
NOTE_STARTDATE
NOTE_ENDDATE
NOTE_AUTHOR
NOTE_LASTUPDATE
I was thinking if it is possible to create a table from the results of this query, my table name(in this case 'Hosea_tblDATA_NOTES') will be a parameter, that whatever table name I pass, with the results I get I will be able to create another table, assuming all data types are varchars, but it should be generic.
I want to create a new table with the about of that query, that output has to be my columns.

I am building a view to be used to drill down into a Lightswitch app I'm building and to drive this I want to use a view based off the selection of that value several other values will be given to the user to choose from related to the first selection. I've created a view using the following statement:
SELECT DISTINCT TOP (100) PERCENT ARSFamily, ARS_Index
FROM dbo.csr_standards_cmsars
ORDER BY ARSFamily
but the results come back with ALL the records of the source table (509 rows) when there should have only been 29 rows returned (the appropriate number of families or unique groups). The index is necessary to have Lightswitch use the view as a data source.what I'm doing wrong here?

In the T-SQL below, I retrieved data from two queries and I've tried to join them to create a report in SSRS 2008 R2. The SQL runs, but I can't create a report from it. (I also couldn't get this query to run in an Excel file that connects to my SQL Server data base. I've used other T-SQL queries in this Excel file and they run fine.) I think that's because I am creating temporary tables. How do I modify my SQL so that I can get the same result without creating temporary tables?

In MSDN file I read about static cursor
STATIC
Defines a cursor that makes a temporary copy of the data to be used by the cursor. All requests to the cursor are answered from this temporary table in
tempdb; therefore, modifications made to base tables are not reflected in the data returned by fetches made to this cursor, and this cursor does not allow modifications
It say's that modifications is not allowed in the static cursor. I have a questions regarding that
Static Cursor
declare ll cursor global static
for select name, salary from ag
open ll
fetch from ll
while @@FETCH_STATUS=0
fetch from ll
update ag set salary=200 where 1=1
close ll
deallocate ll
In "AG" table, "SALARY" was 100 for all the entries. When I run the Cursor, it showed the salary value as "100" correctly.After the cursor was closed, I run the query select * from AG.But the result had updated to salary 200 as given in the cursor. file says modifications is not allowed in the static cursor.But I am able to update the data using static cursor.

Hello,I have a test database with table A containing 10,000 rows and a tableB containing 100,000 rows. Rows in B are "children" of rows in A -each row in A has 10 related rows in B (ie. B has a foreign key to A).Using ODBC I am executing the following loop 10,000 times, expressedbelow in pseudo-code:"select * from A order by a_pk option (fast 1)""fetch from A result set""select * from B where where fk_to_a = 'xxx' order by b_pk option(fast 1)""fetch from B result set" repeated 10 timesIn the above psueod-code 'xxx' is the primary key of the current Arow. NOTE: it is not a mistake that we are repeatedly doing the Aquery and retrieving only the first row.When the queries use fast-forward-only cursors this takes about 2.5minutes. When the queries use dynamic cursors this takes about 1 hour.Does anyone know why the dynamic cursor is killing performance?Because of the SQL Server ODBC driver it is not possible to havenested/multiple fast-forward-only cursors, hence I need to exploreother alternatives.I can only assume that a different query plan is getting constructedfor the dynamic cursor case versus the fast forward only cursor, but Ihave no way of finding out what that query plan is.All help appreciated.Kevin

I have four tables: Customer (CustomerId INT, CountyId INT), County (CountyId INT), Search(SearchId INT), and SearchCriteria (SearchCriteriaId INT, SearchId INT, CountyId INT, [others not related to this]).
I want to search Customer based off of the Search record, which could have multiple SearchCriteria records. However, if there aren't any SearchCriteria records with CountyId populated for a given Search, I want it to assume to get all Customer records, regardless of CountyId.
Right now, I'm doing it this way.
DECLARE @SearchId INT = 100
SELECT * FROM Customer WHERE
CountyId IN
(
SELECT CASE WHEN EXISTS(SELECT CountyId FROM SearchCriteria WHERE SearchId = @SearchId)
THEN SearchCriteria.CountyId
[Code] .....
This works; it just seems cludgy. Is there a more elegant way to do this?

Hello. I currently have a website that has a table on one webpage. When a record is clicked, the primary key of that record is transfered in the query string to another page and fed into an sql statement. In this case its selecting a project on the first page, and displaying all the scripts for that project on another page. I also have an additional dropdownlist on the second page that i use to filter the scripts by an attribute called 'testdomain'. At present this works to an extent. When i click a project, i am navigated to the scripts page which is empty except for the dropdownlist. i then select a 'testdomain' from the dropdownlist and the page populates with scripts (formview) for the particular test domain. what i would like is for all the scripts to be displayed using the formview in the first instance when the user arrives at the second page. from there, they can then filter the scripts using the dropdownlist.
My current SQL statement is as follows.
SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [TestScript] WHERE (([ProjectID] = @ProjectID) AND ([TestDomain] = @TestDomain))"
So what is happening is when testdomain = a null value, it does not select any scripts. Is there a way i can achieve the behaivour of the page as i outlined above? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
James.

Hi,
I have a web form that lets users search for people in my database they wish to contact. The database returns a paged set of results using a CTE, Top X, and Row_number().
I would like to give my users to option of removing individual people from this list but cannot find a way to do this.
I have tried creating a session variable with a comma delimited list of ID's that I pass to my sproc and use in a NOT IN() statement. But I keep getting a "Input string was not in a correct format." Error Message.
Is there any way to do this? I am still new to stored procedures so any advice would be helpful.
Thanks

Hi, when I copy and paste results from query analyzer into Excel it appears that values with zeroes at the end loose the zeroes. Example, if I copy and paste V128.0 into an Excel cell it comes out as V128 or if I copy 178.70 it displays as 178.7 - any ideas? I'm using SQL Enterprise Manager for 2000.

SaTrans.SyStudentID,
satrans.date,
satrans.type,
SaTrans.SyCampusID,
Amount = Case SaTrans.Type
When 'P' Then SaTrans.Amount * -1
When 'C' Then SaTrans.Amount * -1
Else SaTrans.Amount END
From SaTrans , systudent b where satrans.systudentid = b.systudentid
and satrans.systudentid = @id
declare @arbalance money, @type varchar, @ssn varchar, @amount money, @systudentid int, @transdate datetime, @sycampusid int, @before money
set @arbalance = 0
open c
fetch next from c into @ssn, @systudentid, @transdate, @type, @sycampusid, @amount

I having a difficult time here trying to figure out what to do here.I need a way to scroll through a recordset and display the resultswith both forward and backward movement on a web page(PHP usingADO/COM)..I know that if I use a client side cursor all the records get shovedto the client everytime that stored procedure is executed..if thisdatabase grows big wont that be an issue?..I know that I can set up a server side cursor that will only send therecord I need to the front end but..Ive been reading around and a lot of people have been saying never touse a server side cursor because of peformance issues.So i guess im weighing network performance needs with the client sidecursor vs server performance with the server side cursor..I am reallyconfused..which one should I use?-Jim

I hope this is the appropriate forum for this question, if not then I apologize.
I've got a SQL Server 2000 stored procedure that returns data to be used in a crystal report in Visual Studio 2005. Most of the stored procedure works well, but there is a point where I need to calculate an average number of days been a group of date pairs.
I'm not familiar with cursors, but I think that I will need to use one to achieve the result I am looking for so I came up with the code below which is a snippet from my stored procedure. In this part of the code, the sp looks at the temporary table #lmreport (which holds all of the data that is returned at the end to crystal) and for every row in the table where the terrid is 'T' (the territory is domestic), it selects all of those territories from the territory table and loops through them to determine the date averages (by calling a nested stored procedure, also included below) for each territory and then updates #lmreport with that data.
When I try to run the stored procedure, I get "The column prefix '#lmreport' does not match with a table name or alias name used in the query." on the line indicated.
Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong or if this will even work the way I need it to?
Thank you in advance.

I need some help with the concept of a Cursor, as I see it being used in a stored procedure I need to maintain.
Here is some code from the stored proc. Can someone tell me what is going on here. I haveleft out some of the sql, but have isolated the Cursor stuff.
Open MarketCursor -- How is MarketCursor loaded with data ?
FETCH NEXT
FROM MarketCursorINTO ItemID, @Item, @Reguest
WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0BEGIN
DEALLOCATE MarketCursor

I have something like
update table
set field = ...
where field = ...
and for each entry that was effected by this query I want to insert an entry into another table.
I have always done this with cursors is there a more effecient way? For some reason cursors run a lot slower on my sql2005 server than the sql2000 server...
