Creating A Report That Is Emailed Every Night

Oct 10, 2007

Hi,

Some of you might remember me posting a question about importing data from a csv. Well I've managed to do that now by writing a vb.net service.

Now all I need to do is have some kind of method of exporting the data as a report via email every night.

The tables are as follows...

CDetails
cNumber
ClName
FE

Disb_1
cNumber
type
dateReq
payee
amount
vat
total
chequeReq

Disb_2 - Disb_20
"Same as Disb_1"

The report structure I need is...

cNumber ClName FE type dateReq payee amount vat total chequeReq

With data from each disb on a new line, i.e. cNumber could be the same for 20 rows! (don't blame me, it's what they want!)

The records should only be shown though when the dateReq is equal to today. I think I can do that with the DateDiff function.

The problem I have is knowing how to set the report up and what to do it in, Reporting services or Business Intelligence. The report only has to be an email, would it even be simpler to write an extra class into my service?

Steve

AppSettings From Web.config Cannot Be Referenced In Emailed Report Subscription

May 2, 2007

Server Software:

SQL Server 2000 (all sp's up to date)

SSRS 2000 (all sp's up to date)

We have an error when a report subscription is sent via email.

Our report definitions reference a key in the web.config file so that we can have a single location to reference our department's name in all reports. Our department name changes frequently as our company is bought and sold and it is difficult to manually update 700+ reports.

In report designer we have a text field with the following value expression:

=System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings.appSettings("Department").ToString()

Our web.config looks like this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>

<configuration>

....extra settings truncated for brevity...

<appSettings>

<add key="Department" value="Report created by: Corporate Reporting and Analysis" />

</appSettings>

</configuration>

The reports work perfectly in every aspect accept when they are schedules to be emailed. When the email recipient receives the email (not matter what format, mhtl, pdf, etc...) the department string value is replaced with: #Error

Is this a bug with the report schedule and deilvery component? ..or is there a permission problem when accessing: System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings.appSettings("Department").ToString() ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Emailed Subscription Not Including Port Number In Servername URL Link For Report

Aug 14, 2007

I hope someone can help as I have searched for a solution but been unable to find one as yet.

My problem is that after installing SharePoint V3.0 and amending the Report Server to <ServerName>:8080, as I don't yet wish to use integrated mode, everything works fine except email delivered subscriptions. The URL in the email body referencing the report only puts in <ServerName> etc. omitting the port number :8080. I have tried to find where this URL link is built-up from but have had no luck in the report manager, report services configuration and the config files, does anyone know where I need to look and if possible what I need to amend to have the link include :8080 after the servername portion of the URL. I can copy the URL and manually insert the port address and it works but this defeats the object of automated subscriptions.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but it is giving me a headache at the moment.

All answers gratefully received,

Andy

Job Is Disabling Every Night

Apr 12, 2002

Please help if you can! I have setup a job that runs every day on an hourly basis. Every morning I find that it's been disabled. The funny thing is is that the schedule is disabled, but the job is not (you see 'Enabled' in the jobs list in EM, but when you view the schedules tab, it's disabled.) Also, it runs a several times before becoming disabled.

Large Excel Reports Not Being Emailed

Oct 9, 2007

sql 2005 sp2
exchange 2003 sp2

i've got the report server setup to relay through the exchange server for delivering reports. all reports are exported to excel and emailed successfully with the exception of the largest report at about 16mb. the smtp logs on the exchange server show the report server starting a session but no "DATA" is every sent for this report and emails do not arrive. i am assuming due to the size of the report there is some timeout out issue between the smtp client and server. any ideas on how to resolve this issue? maybe a timeout setting on the exchange smtp server? i'm trying to avoid installing a local smtp server on the report server.

thanks in advance

Shrinking A Log File Every Night

Dec 13, 2007

I have a relatively high usage 2005 database whose transaction log grows every day.

Untill now I have been manually shrinking the log files .. but I would like to automate this process.

In the maintenance schedule that runs every night

1 Do a full backup to disk
2. Do a transaction log backup to disk
3. run the following TSQL

USE [MyDB];
GO
ALTER DATABASE MyDB
SET RECOVERY SIMPLE;
GO
DBCC SHRINKFILE (MyDB_log, 3000)
GO
ALTER DATABASE MyDB
SET RECOVERY FULL;
GO

4. Backup disk files to tape.

however it doesn't work !! the TLOG file does not shrink, even though its the same as the manual job that I run?

There is nothing in the SQL logs .. but in the event log I get

Event Type: Error
Event Source: SQLISPackage
Event Category: None
Event ID: 12291
Date: 13/12/2007
Time: 00:50:10
User: NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM
Computer: ALGSQL1
Description:
Package "MyDB_FULL_BACKUP" failed.
For more information, see Help and Support Center

any ideas ?

Creating Report Folders And Report Manager After Fresh Install

Oct 31, 2007

New ssrs istall. I think they loaded sp2. It's a cluster, but ssrs was not clustered (I think)

When I attempt to open report manager, i just get

SQL Server Reporting Services
Home

with no option for creating a folder etc, like i have on development

When I attempt to deploy to ther server I get :

Deploying to http://amsqlclusterxx/reportserver/
Error rsItemAlreadyExists : The item '/Retailer' already exists.

How do I create an ssrs reports folder?

Also, and this is strange, but in vs.net I had to create a new shared datasource after removing the old one on the report with the same name. The report renders fine when I do an f5 pointing to a new datasource, but I no longer have the RUN "!" icon available while in the data tag to run my query. Why is this?

Thanks for any help or information.

RS2005 Emailed Web Archives Not Showing Up With Correct Formating

Dec 7, 2007

I recently upgraded to SQL 2005 and after the upgrade, my emailed reports didn't show formating. The email method was Web Archive (MHTML). Embedded images do show up, but inside tables, my bold, background colors, text alignment, table borders are being ignored.

I created a brand new report (VS 2005) and while it works great in the GUI and it works fine running the report from the webserver and exporting as Web Archieve, I still have the same issue that when it is emailed via a subscription, it comes back without formating.

Even more confusing is that the formating of a text box will work as long as it is before the table. If it is along side or below the table, than its formating won't work either.

Data Changes Made Late At Night Dissapear

Sep 10, 2005

Hi,Sorry for the obscure title but I'm afraid I can't think of a betterway to describe what happened to one of my clerks last night. The guy wasworking late, made a series of changes (accross a number of tables with adependant relationship structure - i.e. a customer linked to an order linkedto an invoice linked to a payments etc.) Now when he came back this morningnone of the work he did last night was still there. I'm by no means asql-pro - but I've managed to make do so far. Here's what I know:1) All of our records in all of our tables have date/time stamped. Once whenthey go in and once when they're changed. So with a little work I can buildup a good picture of what usage our database gets at what times. I've pulledup a query and there is a big fat hole between 8pm-10pm - stuff thathappened before that is still there, stuff that happened after that is stillthere - but all the changes that were put in between then just aren't thereany more. So it's not just insertions but updates as well.2) There is no perceivable break in our identity columns. So despite thefact that I know he entered 7 new customers, I can go back through thecustomers table and look at where those customers should sit visa vie entrytimes - and it's just as though the customers he entered never existed -sql server just keeps incrementing sequentially and there's no break - sothe last customer entered at about 6:50 pm was something like number 11912and the customers entered this morning have numbers that carry on from11913.3) I'm running in a shared environment - the server is hosted by awebhosting company (who shall remain nameless unless I can prove it's theirfault!) based in the US - the server has 100's of other Users databasesrunning on it.I just don't know where to begin diagnosing this sort of problem. But it hasme really running scared. It's not the first time something like this hashappened to me (i've noticed it once before when I had to get a connectionkilled by the people who manage our server because of a long-running querythat seemed to have just got bunged up and was locking a key table) - butthat was just a few records changed by the user who's connection got killed.Nothing like this... but it's pretty scary - I've got no way of knowing thatI'm losing changes like this on a continuous basis. It's my worstnightmare - like a pipe leaking underneath a floor board - and you only findout when the water starts running down the stairs!Has anyone got any ideas? Any starting places? Anyone else had anything likethis happen to them before?ThanksNick

Table Column Widths Size Differently When Emailed To Outlook

May 13, 2007

I am able to get reports going with tables sized properly. They look fine on the ReportServer website and I adjust the column widths so that the headings and data look nice. When I set up a subscription to be delivered by "Report Server E-Mail," though, the table formattings get completely distorted.

In particular, I have two tables, with some column headers being two short words (e.g. Max Height). When rendering on the site, I adjust the columns so the full column header is visible on one line. When I receive the email and read it in Outlook, the header row is now about twice as tall and everything is scrunched together. Both the headings and the data in the fields do not format the same as on the website.

The two tables tend to actually have the exact same width in the email version, although occasionally they are a little different (in the web version one is about half as wide as the other). I have tried just making the columns bigger and that has not worked. I've tried making the font sizes smaller, which didn't work. If I do that, leaving the columns the same width, the email version just gets scrunched into a smaller area with the same text-wrapping problems.

If I open the email in a browser (in a web mail interface) the report renders perfectly as on the site.

I have almost all the default settings, and haven't been messing around with page sizes and things like this (except after, to see if that would fix the problem).

Any ideas, similar experiences, or suggestions? If there is a book I should read or any reference you could point me to in order to figure this out would be helpful. I haven't been able to understand this either using web searches or the two SQL reporting services books I have.

Replication :: Undistributed Transactions Build Up At Same Time Each Night

May 12, 2015

There is a database "Foo" sitting on server "A". There is a database "Bar" sitting on server "B". A.Foo publishes a subset of its schema. B.Bar subscribes to A.Foo's publication. The distribution database is on "B" (B.distributor). This a push subscription (transactions are pushed to the subscriber from the distributor). Every day (including the weekend) I get the following alert:

"5/12/2015 3:53:16 AM, Unsubscribed Transactions (Count) on "B" is Warning.

SQL Server instance "B" has 636771 unsubscribed replication transactions received by the Distributor and not received by a Subscriber.

Unsubscribed Transactions (Count): Number of replication transactions received by the Distributor and not received by a Subscriber."

The number of transactions will vary. The alerts will be sent between 1:20 AM (EST) and 3:30 AM (EST). I'm trying to figure out what is causing the backup of transactions. I assume the issue precedes the alerts by 30-minutes or so.

There are no backups occurringNothing is blocking the distributor agent in the subscription databaseJob activity is at a minimum; the few jobs running run throughout the dayThe machine has plenty of resources -- CPU, RAM, etc.The publisher database shows no signs of stress.

Creating A Drill-through Report

Sep 21, 2007

I'm building my report using the Report Designer in the SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio. At the moment I've got a single report which consists of 2 tables. The top table shows some summary data and the bottom table shows more detail.

What I'd like to do is design the report so that when the summary data (in the top table) appears, the user can click on a row in the table and this takes them to a new screen which shows more detail about that item, extracted from the bottom table.

Is this possible? I know it's possible to create a drill-through report if you have the high-level summary data in one report and the low-level detailed data in a separate report, but is it possible to create a drill-through report if all the data is in one single report (albeit in 2 separate tables)?

Problems Creating Report

Sep 14, 2006

Hi,

I have only recently started playing around with Reporting Services (2005), and I am having some problems creating a basic report.

What I want to display is a table which shows product names in the first column, sales for a specific period this year in the second column, and sales for the same period last year in the third column. The 'specific period' is determined by specifying a start week and an end week which I have set up as parameters.

I have managed to produce the first 2 column with no trouble. However, for the third column I need to subtract 52 weeks from the parameters and use them as new parameter in the third column.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Creating A Report From A Stored Procedure

Aug 22, 2007

Hi

I'm not sure if this is possible, i want to create a report from a stored procedure, all the stored procedure does is select data from my database, however, the code is 1800+ lines of code, it executes in about 1 minute, which is fine. My problem is that i can't paste 1800+ lines of code into the dataset in Reporting Services, so is it possible to get the values from my stored procedure into reporting services so that i can use them to design and execute my report?

Or musst i find an alternative way to do this?

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreaciated and welcome.

Thanks in advance

I can set up the cube as a data source but when I look at the properties there is no option to "Generate Model".

I am running SQL 2005 DE SP2(CTP).

The option is just not there for me. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Creating A Report Model On A UDB Datasource

Aug 30, 2006

Hi all,

I'm just getting started with Reporting Services and have a question.

I'm trying to set up a report model based on a UDB data source. However when I use the report model wizard, I get presented with:

[DB2/SUN] SQL0104N An unexpected token "SET TRANSACTION" was found following "BEGIN-OF-STATEMENT" ... SQLSTATE 42601.

I think that this is trying to set transaction isolation levels however this is not valid SQL for a UDB database.

Is there something that I'm missing with my configuration to make RS know that this is a non-SQLServer database?

Many thanks,

JK

Dynamically Creating Report Width

Apr 5, 2007

Has anyone found out how to dynamically create report width.

If I have 20 columns on a report all of 2cm, then report will be 40cm width.

If I display the columns based on specific criteria using the iif function and then setting the an expression for the Visibility Hidden property, the report could potentially reduce in width.

I cannot see how to build an expression for the report width or table width, to accommodate the potential change in the width of the report when columns are not shown, thus it pages incorrectly, leaving huge white space on the right of the report when columns are hidden... has anyone come across this requirement, and hopefully a solution for it?

Many Thanks people

Creating Report On Local XML File

Jan 4, 2007

Hey All,

I am attempting to create a report on SQL Reporting Services that uses a local XML file as its datasource.  Although i did not find a way to directly do this, I found an MSDN article that walks a person through on how to use a report parameter to paste in your XML data from the page.  When I set up the report in this way, I get an "Invalid URI" error when I go to the preview tab.

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa964129.aspx

What would be the best way for me to use an XML file as a datasource using reporting services?  Is there a way that I can use a local file and use a parameter to point at that file?

Any info, links, tuts, etc. would help.  Thanks!

Nathan

Creating Dataset For Report - Percentages In Result

Nov 3, 2015

Trying to create a dataset for a report. I need to bring back percentage in the result set. The fields that I am using to get the percentage have valid data but the result field is 0.00%. Is there reason I cant bring back a percentage field?

Code:
SELECT JobNum, Mailed, LT_7, BT_6_10, GT_10,
Format([LT_7]/[Mailed], 'p') AS PctScaned1,
Format([BT_6_10]/[Mailed], 'p') AS PctScaned2,
Format([GT_10]/[Mailed], 'p') AS PctScaned3,

Creating A Report Model Based On A View

Aug 1, 2007

in my report model project, i'm able to successfully create and deploy a report model based on a data source view that is in turn based on a table object in my data store.

but if i try to create a report model that's based on a a data source view that is in turn based on a view in my data store, well then, the report model that gets created comes up blank - i.e. shows no objects.

What gives? Is it not possible to create a report based on a view? that can't be right!

May 6, 2008

My application uses 2 databases from 2 different server. When i create a report model in business intellegence development studio I can only create 1 datasource for each database, and 1 datasource view for each datasource. Then when I create a new report, I can only use one datasource.

Is it possible that my report can be built on more than one databases?

Reporting Services :: Creating Tabbed Report In SSRS

Mar 20, 2014

I am trying to create SSRS report with tabs. Something like this

Tab 1
Tab2
Tab 3
Tab4
Tab5

The end user will input a value which will be passed to all the DataSets (my case each Tab will display some information from a DataSet). So when the user clicks on Tab1, it will display relevant information form DataSet1 and when the user clicks Tab2, it will hide the Tab1 information and should display the Tab2 information from DataSet2.I am able to achieve the following:

1. Making the tab clickable
2. Navigating from one tab to another (dispalying relevant information for each Tab) - Using Go to BookMark or Go to Report Option in the Action Property

But I am not able to hide the inactive tab report data. I am building reports and deploying it in SharePoint 2010.

Reporting Services :: Creating A Filter For Report Item

Aug 18, 2015

I am new to report builder. I have created a report with a calculated cell that returns a true or false value based on a true or false value from another column (from a dataset field). I want to create a filter for the calculated field (which is a ReportItem), that will only show cells that are True.

I have tried several ways to add this filter, but each time, I get an error message saying that filter or sorting cannot be created for ReportItems.
