When creating a user in SQL Server what is a Schema as opposed to a Role?
In the security folder of a database, I also saw the folders "Asymmetric keys", "Certificates", and "symmetric keys". What are these about?

In 2005 the security login will not allow me to add a user, database role, application role or schema manually. If I use a Transact-SQL in Query Editor to create a Login with a password, it said it was successful yet The T-SQL added my login as an application role is this correct? and why can I not add manually? is there another function that must be performed first?
I am very new to the environment but know 2000 very well and miss it being so user friendly.
Just installed SQL Server 2005 and tested my old VS 2005 ASPnet websites, which were connected toSQL Server 2000 databases before. All my websites were created for local HTTP applications, coded with a connection string with User ID and Password. The SQL Server 2000 was configured as mixed authentication (i.e. with User ID and Password). These websites worked very well with SQL Server 2000 database server.Testing my old VS 2005 websites with SQL Server 2005 database, showed a 'Login failed for a User ''.' error msgalthough the 'Test Connection' on VS 2005 design showed a perfect query for e.g. a GridView control. I have assured that the UserID/Password were correct for Management Studio Security object'slogin and Database Security's user. The server instance was configured with mixed authentication mode. One thing I am not sure of is, when clicking the Management Studio icon, a Connection dialog showed up, asking for a Windows or MIxed authentication? I just stayed with the Windows authentication. i'm using the Enterpirse library logger to write logs into a database.
When choosing connection string i choose the database i want in the "connection properties" dialog box and
push 'Test connection' button.
everything goes well.
then i open the SQL Server Management studio express and connect to the databse to check some things,
from that point on , when i push the 'Test Connection' button in the Enterprise library i get the error:
"cannot open user default database. Login failed. login failed for user My'server/MyuserName'"
even when i close the sql server manager , it is still stuck - the connection test doesn't work anymore....
it only work when i restart the computer.

yes. that code created me a sql login 'user', but even before i grant any permission to any database, the login manage to acces database: master, tempdb, msdb and one of my application databases' tables and everythings. i like to know what is it i am doin wrong and what are the default access when creating a login, and is it becoz of any configuration in my server ?

I have not been able to install SQL Express SP2 (standard or advanced) on Vista Ultimate (RTM). Every time I try to install, I get the following error message:

Has anyone else run into this issue and resolved it? I have seen posts for earlier versions of SQL Express that said to run the configuration manager and change the account types to Local System rather than Network Service, but I don't have the configuration manager installed. If I set the accounts to use Local System by changing the login info during setup, I get the same error.

I'm not a DBA, so I don't know where to look for information on this.
In SQL Server 2005, I can simply no longer create a user for the database I created. It asks that the user be associated with a login. That login is found in the Security folder of the database instance.
The question is: what is this instance security folder for? I don't recall having to do this in SQL Server 2000.
Any elaboration or links to such information would be appreciated.

I am having a problem with creating databases in MS SQL 2005 Server. When I attempt to assign an User Mapping for my SQL user account to the newly created database, the "dbo" user and schema is already assigned. When I try to drop this user in favor of my own, I receive an error message: Cannot alter the user "dbo" (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 15150). I am connected to my database engine through the "sa" account.

Then I change the password and it gets accepted. When I try my web application, I get the dreaded "login failed for <loginname>". I look at the properties again and see my password never change. Is this a bug? I ever tried this syntax to no avail:

I have lots of problems with the connection. I've connected many dropdownlists to the database and i didn't have problems at all. I also try an example of an ASP.NET book:

I tried lots of things but it didn't work:
In SQL Configuration Manager:
Client Protocols: TCP/IP and Named Pipes are enabled.
In SQL 2005 Services: Server Properties: Built-in Account: Local System
SQL Server Surface Area Configuration: Remote connections: Using both TCP/IP and Name Pipes connection is selected.
In SQL Management Studio i created a new login glgrand-ar/UserStartupName , with sysadmin server role and user mapping my CIPPEC database.
I don't know what else i could try, i tried it at home and at work and i couldn't connect to my database and make an INSERT. It stops at Connect.Open() with the error that i wrote in this subject message.
It's evident that i'm doing something wrong (because i'm new): Could you please help me with a solution and explain me what are the data that i have to put on the Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection ?? I'm using the Windows authentication: i'm putting my username and password and it doesn't worked.

i am getting the above error message once in a while maybe two or 3 times a week , and then it goes away in 10 to 15 minutes or 5 minutes ,
our mode is set to mixed and we are able to connect and use both sql and windows , but once in a while , it will give us the above message when we try connecting throught sql server management studio client (using sql 05) using windows login , although it lets us connect using sql login while the windows login is denied, and after a while it lets us connect with both.
occurs randomly on some days , we run our servers on VM ware virtual machines using windows 2003 r2 enterprise 64 bit with sp2 with esx 301 virtual machine.

Oracle and Teradata are able to capture the windows/client login that connects to their database with a functionnal ID.I've searched around and I don't think MS SQL can do this...I administer SQL 2014 server and also SAS Enterprise guide product. I've created sql server logins for several teams so everyone shares the same sql server login which is used to bind the SAS library to my SQL server database.
However, when looking at activity monitor, I can't drill down to which user is executing a particular query. I only see the SQL login which is share amongs 200 other folks.On the other hand, when they connect from SAS to Oracle or Teradata, I can see the shared login + additionally their windows NT login used to connect to SAS which is awesome....they can't fool me by using a shared/funcionnal ID....i still see who's using that ID...

Last week I was receiving an error when trying to connect to two of our seven sql servers from my laptop via my domain admin account. The only fix was to have my laptop rebuilt and everything re-installed.
Today however another administrator is starting to have the same problem but to only one of the seven servers!
When that administrator uses my laptop with her domain admin account it works!?
What could possibly be going wrong with our laptops? We have not installed or changed anything.

All the research I found dealing with this problem is that the solution is to set SQLserver to mix mode. I have SQL server already set to mix mode. I am not sure what else to do. Has anybody run into this problem?

We have setup a SCOM 2007 Server and in this we have SQL 2005 SP2, We are using two accounts one for OPRATIONAL DATABASE and another one for REPORTING DATABASE after this setup everything was working fine but suddenly my SDK account which is for REPROTING DATABASE was locked by entering wrong password and afterwards I unlocked the password but SINCE this i'm not able to connect to my REPORTING DATABASE and i'm getting following ERROR:- Login Failed for user 'username'. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
Taken following action to rectify this problem:
1) Resetting the SDK password with the same password.
2) Restarted all the SQL and SCOM services.
3) Restarted the Server as well.
4) Converted from WINDOWS AUTHENTICATION mode to MIXED mode.
But the problem is still persisting, Please help ASAP.

I received the above error yesterday and haven't been able to trace it to any job or process running. We haven't implemented any changes to the server in the past few months, and it doesn't look to be a user-established connection, since the Client IP Address of the SSPI handshake error is from the server itself.

Been looking through the forums for a solution to this problem.I already tried granting access through statements such as:exec sp_grantloginaccess N1'machineNameASPNET'But they don't seem to work.. i vaguely remember seeing somewhere a DOS command line statement that grants access to the ASPNET_WP and that fixed my problem before on another computer.. but this is a new computer and i forgot to write down the command.Can anyone help explain and propose a solution to my problem. I've seen many, many, many, many posts regarding this topic - but none have been able to fully explain nor fix my problem.I've developed a security solution according to Scott Gu's guide and it works great - but only on my local machine running VWD and SQLExp2005. Once I move this application it completely breaks in the productions environment. Today I managed to get it halfway there. I created a SQL login and changed my web.config to use these credentials - now the web application will come up, but none of my links (that are role based) are displayed - most likely because i'm authenticating as the SQL credentials instead of me. So I switch it back to windows authenticated, as it is on my laptop, and it breaks again. Please tell me theres a way to get this working in production and Scott's fantastic tutorial hasn't wasted me 2 weeks of work. Here's the exact error I get when using Integrated authentication:
