Creating Multiple Foreign Key Constraints On A Key?
Feb 21, 2015
CREATE TABLE IssueLog (
ItemNo int NOT NULL IDENTITY PRIMARY KEY
REFERENCES IssueProgress (ItemNo)
ON UPDATE CASCADE
ON DELETE CASCADE,
REFERENCES Approvals(ItemNo)
ON UPDATE CASCADE
ON DELETE SET NULL,
Msg 142, Level 15, State 2, Line 0
Incorrect syntax for definition of the 'TABLE' constraint.
I'd like to update or delete the IssueProgress plus update and setting null to the Approvals tables at the same time whenever the ItemNo of the parent table namely IssueLog is updated or deleted.
How can I achieve this?

I know this is probably a flick of a switch but I cannot figure out which switch. Setup is SQL Server / Stored Procedures / DAL / BLL(skipped for testing) / PL. The stored procedure queries from only one table and two columns are ignored because they are being phased out. I can run the stored procedure and preview the data in the DAL but when I create a page with an ODS linked to the DAL and a GridView I get this error. I checked every column that does not allow nulls and they all have values. I checked unique columns (ID is the only unique and is Identity=Yes in the table definition). I checked foreign-key columns for values that are not in the foreign table and there are none. Any ideas why do I get this?
Failed to enable constraints. One or more rows contain values violating non-null, unique, or foreign-key constraints.

Hi,
I am getting the above error when trying to load a report into my Web Application, I have tracked the error down to one specific field in my database. Even though this field is a NVarChar field and is of size 30 it would seem that there is an issue returning the value from the field. I can write it into the database no problems but when I try to get it out of the database it returns the above error.
e.g
MOB 401.908.804 - Fails
0401.907.324 - okay
8239 9082 (pager) - fails
Anyone got an idea on how to fix this????
Regards..
Peter.

I have two tables, T1 and T2.T1 has a foreign Key that refers to a key in T2.The way that I see it, its only possible to insert something into T1 ifthere already exists a tuple in T2 with the same value in key.That means that I always have to insert something into T2 before insertinginto T1Is that correct?

When following a script to create some tables and constraints, it is recommended that you name the FK constraint? Otherwise it appears with numbers after it. Is this the way 2005 creates them or has this always been the naming convention?

I want to disable foreign key constraints en mass. Is there a way to do this?
I know that I can go into each table and navigate to the Relationship tab of Properties and uncheck the "Enforce relationship for INSERTs and UPDATEs" box, but I'd much prefer to automate this process with a query since there are 160+ tables and probably 200+ relationships to disable.
I figure that sysconstraints my be the ticket, but I will keep experimenting until I get the right solution. In the meantime, any insight to steer me in the right direction is appreciated.

Hi All,
I know that when you specify a PRIMARY KEY or UNIQUE constraint for a table, SQL Server creates a unique index for the primary key columns.
What about foreign keys? Does SQL Server creates an index when you create a foreign key?
I have looked in Books Online and on the Internet, but couldn't find any information.
Thanks in advance.

I've recently implemented a whole bunch of foreign key constraints in a database. As a result I have issues every time I want to truncate a table to perform data loads.
Is there an easy way to tell the system to ignore these constraints for the term of a data load or truncation of data?
thank you

I have recently restored an SQL Server 2000 database on SQL Server 2005
A number of constraints on the database had previously been disabled
A monthly process that is carried out, imports data into 'Table A'.
This process now crashed, being unable to truncate table as it referenced by 'Table B'
Although when i check the properties of the constraint the 'enforce foreign key constraints' is set to no.
Is there a known issue with restoring databases on 2005,
Any help greatly appreciated.

How do I update the ProductCode column in both tables to reflect my updated data?
Thanks in advance.

How can I get and or set the order in which the cascading deletes of a table are executed??
I have table A with cascading deletes to Table B and Table C. Records in table B can not be deleted if they are referenced from table C. So if I delete C, then B and then A; that would work. But B then C and then A might be prohibited due to the constraint between B and C. Therefor the order of execution of the cascading delete is important.

I changed this value at pub properties - Articles -
And then it is asking for MARK for reinitialization with the new snapshot.I clicked ok.
When I checked sync status it has given the message like initial snapshot is not yet available.I started the snapshot and the subscription started replication records.When check at pup properties the value Copy foreign key constraints again false.
After changing the value to true it is showing as False.

Ok, so I've broken down and decided to write myself an invoicing
program. I'd like to use GUID fields as the Primary Keys in my
table. Now, I basicly bill for two seperate items:
Deliverables and Services.
So, my Layout's gonna look something like
Create Table Invoice(
ID UniqueIdentifier Primary Key,
-- Other Data
);
Create Deliverable(
ID uniqueidentifier Primary Key,
ParentInvoice uniqueidentifier,
-- Other data);
--...
Im sure there are probems with that as it's written feel free to edify me as to what they are.
my questions are such:
1) Does a uniqueidentifier field automagically get a value?
2) If not how do I generate one in TSQL?
3) If so, what do I use to store my Foreign Keys.
4) How do I declare my Foreign key constraints?

Guys,
I have 600 tables in my database, out of which 40 tables are look up value tables. I want generate truncate scripts which truncates all the tables in order of Parent child relationship excluding lookup tables. Is there any way to do this apart from figuring out Parent Child relationship and then writing the truncate statements for each of the table.
For example
EmployeeDetail table references Employee table
DepartmentDetail table references Department table
Department table references Employee table
My truncate script should be
TRUNCATE TABLE DEPARTMENTDETAIL
TRUNCATE TABLE EMPLOYEEDETAIL
TRUNCATE TABLE DEPARTMENT
TRUNCATE TABLE EMPLOYEE
Is there any automated way to figure out parent and child tables and generate truncate script for the same.
Thanks

I'm working on creating a new version of an existing table. I want to keep the old table around, only with a different name. In looking this up I found there's a system routine named sp_rename, which looks like it will work fine.However in thinking about this I realized that the foreign key constraints defined on the table (there's 3 of them) are likely to not be renamed, correct?
If I'm correct, then I suppose I could rename the table, then drop the 3 foreign key constraints, and create them new using different names for those foreign key constraints.

When I try to like Rkey from both tables as a foreign key relationship, I get an error that the columns in one table "do not match an existing primary key or UNIQUE constraint. (I've tried it both ways and get the same error.)
How can I link these two tables?

Hi all,
I am having a problem setting multiple constraints over a table from other table. To be more clear, I have the following code:
ALTER TABLE Solicitud_Servicio
DROP CONSTRAINT FK_Solicitud_Servicio_Domicilio;
ALTER TABLE Solicitud_Servicio
DROP CONSTRAINT FK_Solicitud_Servicio_Domicilio1;
ALTER TABLE Solicitud_Servicio ADD CONSTRAINT
FK_Solicitud_Servicio_Domicilio1 FOREIGN KEY
(
ID_Domicilio_Envio
) REFERENCES Domicilio
(
ID_Domicilio
) ON UPDATE CASCADE;
ALTER TABLE Solicitud_Servicio ADD CONSTRAINT
FK_Solicitud_Servicio_Domicilio FOREIGN KEY
(
ID_Domicilio_Facturacion
) REFERENCES Domicilio
(
ID_Domicilio
) ON UPDATE CASCADE;
As you see, I want an update on the field Domicilio.ID_Domicilio to change the fields Solicitud_Servicio.ID_Domicilio_Envio and Solicitud_Servicio.ID_Domicilio_Facturacion from my point of view there should be no problem and the weird part is that if I try this with only one constraint (either one) it works, as soon as I try to apply the other constraint I get a very annoying
The referential relationship will result in a cyclical reference that is not allowed?
Maybe Sql Server Mobile 2005 does not support multiple constraints on a table from the same other table?
Thanks,
Flaker

Hey everyone,
I have just started getting into to SQL and am completely brand new to the whole concepts of relational databases. Someone on this forum pointed to the MSDN videos on LEARNVISUALSTUDIO.NET which have been very helpful. Unfortunately while learning about relational databases and looking at the program that I want to design and make using them, I have run into a pretty big wall, concerning the primary key and foreign key.
For my program, I am trying to save an object, and lets say the base class is SLIDE. Now SLIDE will store basically most of the information that I will ever want to store, such as timeCreated and mainText and slideID(primarykey). But there are other classes that derive from slide that will store just a bit more information than that because of what they are. Lets say there is a class derived from SLIDE called PERSON that stores its parentNode, which is to say something that this slide specifically belongs to and has a reference to. Now the tricky part is that in this program, every single slide can have a reference to another slide, that you would see displayed and that you could just click on and view if you wanted to.
Now relating what I just told about the classes in my program to a relation database standpoint is what confuses me. If I make a table SLIDE, it would hold incomplete data about the PERSON object, because that object has more data than SLIDE has. The answer to this was to make another table called PERSON, which would have more columns. But now we arrive at the big problem: The primary key called maybe SLIDEID would be different in this new PERSON table than in the other table called SLIDE (or any other derived class). Therefore the link between these tables is messed up. In my object orientated mind I am thinking of static class variables that would still stay constant for derived classes, so that when I make a PERSON slide it will increment off of the primary key of the SLIDE table. In other words, is there some sort of super TABLE that you can derive from, like an abstract class, where the primary keys of other tables can build off of because they will be used as the same type of reference to eachother.
If none of this made sense to the reader, I am greatly sorry. I do not really know what else I can say to convey to you the problem I have. Maybe its because I am so used to object orientated languages that this is making it so difficult to explain. If however you do understand what I am talking about, please think about it and help me find a solution to this problem. I am not an experienced programmer, but I do very much enjoy it and I am very excited about starting to make this program, and I have learned that before I start coding it is very important to have a very firm design in mind first.
Thank your for reading,
Jeremy

I'm shredding the below xml into relational tables. Each element of the xml has it's own table and there is a foreign key to join the tables, you can see this in the below picture. The process I follow is each relational table I always bring the nesecary xml and store it in the table and when shredding I always look at the parent table.So for example when processing the seat table, I use seat xml from the parent route table, also taking the ROUTEID from the route table. The reason I do this is all about taking the id from the previous step to create the relationships between the tables. without taking the xml down to the tables?The problem with this approach is I have xml stored in most tables and the tables are becoming very large.
<Route Type="OneWay" >
<Seat Type="FirstClass">
<Prices>
<Price Price="10" />
<Price Price="11" />
</Prices>

Hi,
I'm trying to create a database that takes specific information from a number of databases on different servers to make some reporting that we have much easier.
I'm pretty new to SQL so I'm not sure of the best way to proceed. I read an article that suggested I use the OPENROWSET command. The problem is, the version of SQL that came with one of the programmes we use is limited and will not allow you to turn on the allow "Ad Hoc distributed Queries" so the SLQ statement will not execute.
I'm confused why it won't let me to connect through ODBC as I've created a web page that selects data from this database with no problems!
Here is the SQL statement that I've written to make sure it is the correct one (on the msdn library page it said that this was the ODBC connection):
SELECT a.*
FROM OPENROWSET('MSDASQL','DRIVER=(SQL Server);SERVER=APPOLOACT7;UID=sa;PWD=***************',
'SELECT * FROM MDCTestAndDev.dbo.TBL_CONTACT') AS a
I've also created the ODBC connection using the tool on Administration Tools>Data Sources ODBC
Any help would be greatly appreciated (also any ways of selecting from one database and inserting it into another will be helpfull)
Thanks

What are the possible issues I could run in to having multiple foreign keys in a table. Here is why I ask. I have a db (sql server) that has a participant table, a forum table, and a forum reply table. Every record in the forum reply table is associated with the forum table via a PK-FK relationship w/cascading updates/deletes. The participants who post in these tables are not tied back to the participant table via a PK-FK relationship w/cascading updates/deletes. Should they be?
The problem I ran in to is that one particpant was deleted from the participant table but a post with their partid still existed in the forum or forum reply tables.
My feeling is that anytime a participant is deleted, everything that pertains to them should go too, right? If I am right, what do I have to be careful of if I do that?
Let me know! Thanks!!
