Current Recordset Does Not Support Updating. This May Be A Limitation Of The Provider
Mar 25, 2004
I keep getting this error when I try to update
Current Recordset does not support updating. This may be a limitation of the provider, or of the selected locktype.
It worked fine in Access, but when I switched to SQL Server it stopped working.
Can someone help! Please!

Hi All,
I was using VB6 to access a MS SQL Server database. The code worked and works fine. I then decided to migrate the code to C#.Net 2005 using ADO 2.8 (not ADO.Net). Doing that yields with the same exact code the error message, "Current Recordset does not support updating".
I did a whole bunch of Google searches and didn't see anything useful. Mainly the advice from Microsoft and others is to make sure the mode on the connection string is set to "ReadWrite", as the default is "Read Only" and to make sure to set the lock type to either optimistic or pessimistic. Still others said that the code should set the CursorLocation property of the recordset.
I can safely say that I have been setting the mode to "Read/Write" since the start and have played around with the lock type, cursor location, and open method. Nothing works on C#, BUT VB6 is so totally happy with everything.
The provider works fine, as VB6 works fine, and the lock type is also fine, so therefore the built in suggestions do not apply.
My code is:
// Connection string template. Filled in properly in real code.
strConnect = "Server={0};Database={1};"
// Set the connection properties.
this.SQLConnection.ConnectionString = strConnect;
this.SQLConnection.Provider = "SQLOLEDB";
this.SQLConnection.Mode = adModeReadWrite;
// Open the connection.
this.SQLConnection.Open(strConnect, strUserName, strPassword, -1);
=================
// Create the ADO objects needed.
dbRSAdd = new Recordset();
// Open the recordset.
dbRSAdd.Open(strTable, dbCatalog.ActiveConnection, CursorTypeEnum.adOpenDynamic, LockTypeEnum.adLockOptimistic, (int)CommandTypeEnum.adCmdTable);
// Cycle through each record to add.
dbRS.MoveFirst();
for (lRecord = 0; lRecord < dbRS.RecordCount; lRecord++)
{
// Add a new record.
dbRS.AddNew(System.Reflection.Missing.Value, System.Reflection.Missing.Value);
...
}
// NOTE: The code crashes with the call to 'AddNew'.
Any advice?

Hi all -
I know this is prolly an old one but I would certainly appreciate some assistance =)
environment:
SERVER (IIS6, .NET2.0, SQL2005)
CLIENT (WIN2000,IE6,VBScript)
I have an aspx that is invoking ado on the clientside. I read somewhere that javascript does not support connecting to SQL clientside. I may be wrong. In any case I am using VBScript on the client.
I am using something like this to invoke the script
Code Snippet
<a href="#" onclick="doReport()">Click Here</< FONT>a>
doReport() looks something like this ...
Code Snippet

Dim iLastDataPoint

set oDoc = oWord.Documents.Open(stTemplatePath)
oWord.visible = true
stCurrentSection = "a"

'loadLive

' == THIS DB CALL GETS 2 RESULT SETS
'set rs = getrsCustomerInfoReport(mstUnits, left(mstCycles,3), mstAppName)
set rs = getReadOnlyRS("sCC_GetCustInfo_Report '" & mstUnits & "','" & left(mstCycles,3) & "','" & mstAppName & "'")
' == POPULATE VARS FROM 1st RESULT SET
dtLastDataPoint = rs(0)
iLastDataPoint = rs(1)
set rs = rs.NextRecordset ' <== THIS IS WHERE IS ERROR IS
msgbox rs(0)
end sub
here is my openconnection sub ... oConn is global
Code Snippet

Before we moved to SQL2005 I always used this
Code Snippet
' ========================================================
Function getReadOnlyMultRS(strSQL)
set rs = CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")
rs.CursorLocation = adUseClient
rs.Open strSQL, oConn, adOpenForwardOnly, adLockReadOnly
'Disconnect the Recordset
Set rs.ActiveConnection = Nothing
'Return the Recordset
Set getReadOnlyMultRS = rs
End Function
and this always allowed me to use set rs = rs.nextresultset
but now that we switched to SQL2005 it does not seem to work. I have verified in sql studio that this sp does indeed return 2 resultsets

I posted this in the MS Access group, but no luck.------------------------------------------I've got another stored procedure in the same app that returns multiplerecordsets and the code works.But now I've written another SP and the code traps out with the 3251 message.The SP is writing two recordsets.When I run the SP in Query Analyzer, both recordsets appear.But when I step through the code, when the first RS should be there, it's"Closed" and nothing I've tried will make it open.Provider=SQLOLEDB.1 (which works on the other screen...)Seems like I've been here before, but I can't remember what the problem was.--PeteCresswell

Reader Community
I've just started hosting my newly created Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition web site. Unfortunately the Login group membership functions will not function correctly. Having contacted the web service hosting provider, They replied: "We do not support SQL express2005. The only way to use the extra functions of ASP.NET2 such as group membership is if it is using an SQL 2000 database to connect to. "
Is it possible to design web sites with Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition that store membership details on an SQL 2000 database?
I've just paid £88 approx. $140 for a years subscription, have I chosen the wrong web service hosting provider?
Should I have designed the web site with a better web site design software tool that also makes designing membership login functionality easy, just as Microsoft Visual Web developer 2005 express edition?
Look forward to all comments?

Philip

Newbie to SQL Server here.
I'm opening a Access 2003 form with a ADO recordset with the following code;
Function SetFloaterDataSource()
Dim RecSourceFloater As String
Dim cn As ADODB.Connection
Dim rs As ADODB.Recordset
RecSourceFloater = "SELECT tbl_UserVarHSTUFloatStatByEelink.* " _
& "From tbl_UserVarHSTUFloatStatByEelink " _
& "WHERE (((tbl_UserVarHSTUFloatStatByEelink.idCalendar)=" & MyTSCalcIdCal & "));"
'Use the ADO connection that Access uses
Set cn = CurrentProject.AccessConnection
'Create an instance of the ADO Recordset class, and
'set its properties
Set rs = New ADODB.Recordset
With rs
Set .ActiveConnection = cn
.Source = RecSourceFloater
.LockType = adLockOptimistic
.CursorType = adOpenKeyset
.CursorLocation = adUseServer
.Open
End With
'Set the form's Recordset property to the ADO recordset
Set WeekDay.Form.Recordset = rs
Set rs = Nothing
Set cn = Nothing
End Function
When I edit the form I noticed that I could not go back to a recently added record because it was not available, so I concluded that I had to force an update, which I do in the before update event of my form, as follows;
'Update the underlying recordset
Me.Recordset.Update
It works great on my test server here, but when I instal it on the SQL Server 2000 - I get an error 'EOF' or 'BOF' is true......... so it fails
Any thougths?

I'm updating an ADO recordset inside VB6... We just moved the database from SQL Server 2000 to SS2205....
The following code has worked a long-time now when it tries to update the record with SS2205 on the back-end I get a run-time error '3219' Operation is not allowed in this context...
Here is the Open statement...
SampleRecordset.Open "Select * from samplereleased_view", SampleConnection, adOpenDynamic, adLockOptimistic, adCmdText
Here is the line it errors on...
SampleRecordset.Update
Any thoughts on this issue would be great!

I am getting an error (number -2147217887, error message "ODBC--call failed.") when I try to execute an rst.Update. I have an MS Access 2013 application using an ODBC connection to SQL Server 2008 r2. I am using a query to update a table. It is a simple Select query with no joins. I have checked to make sure the table can be updated.
I was not sure if there were any special permissions that I need to set to allow a linked table to be updated in MS Access this way?

updating a recordset contained in an System.Object variable during runtime.
I am trying to execute multiple file actions (plus parsing those files into a set of staging tables) at separate locations in parallel. I know I can do this in C# but I have a business requirement to use SSIS for all ETL operations.
Any one site can have 0 to many of 1 to 3 files. I would like to run multiple sites at the same time, so when all files of all types are completed at that site then go on to the next site in the list. I know I can do a single site at a time in a foreach loop but if I can run lets say 3-5 sites concurrently then I should be able to save execution time.
My thought is to have a recordset of the sites, when any 1 of the 3 (or more) "control flows" is open, update the recordset to let it know that site being actioned, when that site is complete, update the recordset that the site is completed, and so on.Or am I running in the wrong direction?

We've installed the Oracle provider for OLE DB on SQL Server 2005, which has the default collation (SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS), and we've created a linked server for the Oracle 9.2.0.5 database, which has AL32UTF8 as the database character set. We can successfully insert strings into VARCHAR2 columns on Oracle from SQL Server via EXEC SP_EXECUTESQL('INSERT OPENQUERY(...) VALUES(...)') -- as long as the strings (whether selected from NVARCHAR columns on SQL Server or specified as literals with the N prefix during testing) only contain Windows-1252 characters.
If the SQL statement contains a character above U+00FF, the string on the Oracle side is incorrectly/doubly encoded; there are nearly (but not exactly) 4 bytes per character instead of the 1 or 2 you'd expect from ASCII/Latin-1 characters encoded as UTF-8.
We've tried reconfiguring the linked server: collation compatible = false, use remote collation = true, and collation name = Latin1_General_BIN2. But that had no effect.
What is the correct way to do this?
Thanks!

I am using SQL Server 2005 and trying to create a linked server on Oracle 10. I used the commands below:
EXEC sp_addlinkedserver
@server = 'test1',
@srvproduct = 'Oracle',
@provider = 'MSDAORA',
@datasrc = 'testsource'
exec sp_addlinkedsrvlogin
@rmtsrvname = 'test1',
@useself = 'false',
@rmtuser='sp',
@rmtpassword='sp'
When I execute
select * from test1...COUNTRY
I get the error. "The OLE DB provider "MSDAORA" for linked server "...." does not contain the table "COUNTRY". The table either does not exist or the current user does not have permissions on that table."
The 'sp' user I am connecting is the owner of the table. What could be the problem ?
Thanks a lot.

Dear all
I have a company that sells fruit and vegetables to the catering industry.
I take orders in the evening for the next day, and buy my fruit and vegetables from wholesale market to deliver to my customers on the next day.
I have sage simply accounting.
I have to enter invoices day before I print them, so I can get a list of items i should buy next day (and also sort them into different routes)
My question is, is there a way to update all the prices on the active invoices (i.e. not printed or posted) for the previous day, after I enter new prices for the fruit and vegetables???
I need this as at the moment I hava to go into individual invoices and enter the products and quantities again.
Many thanks

If I install SQL 2005 Standard on Windows 2003 Standard, is SQL limited to 4 gigs of physical RAM?
I'm planning a new system that will run SQL 2005 Standard edition on a Windows 2003 Standard platform. The spec calls for 8 GB of RAM. My experience would lead me to suspect I need to install Windows 2003 Enterprise to take advantage of all the installed memory.

hi all
I realised this has been done to death, and so much information out there but I am still in a quandry.
I have had to rebuild my computer.
This is what I did
XP machine
using SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition
using Windows Authentication
NZ6(MSSQLSERVER)
straight default install all the way
unfortunately when ready to run reports from my instance(computer)
I received the error as in provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server
thought I had it all okayed but obviously something not right
so ended up unistalling then - did the following:
Load SQL Server from disc1 and start install
failed on alter Counter Registry key error
fixed this from KB article (known error that can happen)
restarted
Went to Windows Update
check IIS is installed - tick is on - IIS - admin tools - make sure asp2 is associated - yes ok
Then back to install sql server - there is no instance set up yet
Disk 2 and setup .exe
All ok on Reporting Services, Analysis etc.
But once again all seems fine but still getting the error:
connection is all fine in Management Studio - eg I can see tables etc
connection is all fine in Business Intelligence - eg I can preview my reports
I then can deploy up to - NZ6
open NZ6
eports
report is there fine - but just errors
some simple little tick that I have not done!!
I seem to have checked and rechecked everything and obviously doing another re-install does not seem a logical step from here.
I will continue to check but if someone jump in and advise please would be great.
cheers

Hi all,
I am currently on XP x64 and am trying to run a .vbs file, which needs access to an access file when the following error pops up:
"Provider is not specified and there is no designated default provider"
error code: 800a0ea9
source: ADODB.Connection
I have tried a bunch of stuff, but so far nothing has worked.
The following code is is question:
set AccessDB = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
AccessDB.Open("DRIVER={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)}; DBQ=" & sMSAccessDBPath)
any help would be appreciated......could I run this with cscript.exe (in the WoW64 folder) in through cmd.exe?
Thanks in advance for you help.

I've just posted mywebsite andthis error keep being trhrown as soon as I access the DB
I dont understand what is going on and if I dont get it working bu today will delivery date will expire and I will get in trouble...
So anyone knows what is going on
It says the following:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
Here is my con string :
<add name="ASPNETDBConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=p3swhsql-v09.shr.secureserver.net;Initial Catalog=myCatalog;User ID=MyID;Password='Mypassword"/>
Thanks a lot
