DB Design :: Database Backup In Case Of Multi Tenant Model
Oct 15, 2015
I have one database which is multi tenant, every table has tenant id and every tenant is mapped with separate file group. Now can I achieve below :?
1. Can I take the backup of only one tenant and restored in separate database?
2. Can I takeout the data of one tenant quickly?
3. Can I undo the data of a particular tenant with 2 days older data without disturbing the other tenant ?

I have a several questions with regards to setting up a server to cater for multi tenant database.
I have a requirement to host 100 isolated databases for the purpose of multi user environment where each user has it's own database. This is due to security restrictions that why it was requested to be such.
1. What I'm recommending is to setup servers with 256GB of RAM to host multiple databases. Are there servers which can accomodate 256GB? Is this optimal with regards to performance? Or should I break it down to smaller servers with less RAM?
2. Is there a way to determine the CPU requirements for the DB server, taking for example we have 20 databases per DB instance? Are there any best practices / calculators available?
3. Additionally, data from the 100 DB's needs to be consolidated into 1 central repository for Analytics purposes. What I'm looking at is to utilize SQL Server transaction replication. Is there any drawback with this approach? Are there any other approach we could use to easily replicate data across 100 database back to 1 central repository?

Hello all,
I am working on an ASP.NET that different companies will be loggin on to. The way the SQL db has been written is that each company will have it's own database. However, I am not sure if this is the right approach since modifying the database would be quite a hassle (i'd have to modify each one). Is there a way a single databse would have several instances that share the same structure but with different data ?
What is the recommended approach in these situations ? Should I re-design the database so that ALL companies store their data in one huge database ?

I am using sql2012 se and we want to use couchbase to store some data as documents. So the database will be Hybrid(partly SQLServer and Partly couchbase). However the database is still in the design phase. What are the things that we should keep in mind when designing this database from a design perspective? Our database which was completely SQLServer based(RDBMS) was using GUIDs everywhere based off NEWID() and prime goal is to get rid of GUIDs for the most part.

Hi there
We are thinking to create a small scale of the "Software On-Demand" model for Support Ticket Management System which means that the client can login to do a support tick and shared the application using the same URL.
Couple options though:
1) We design by table such has a SUPPORTS table with has a foreign key of the ClientID from CLIENTS table. This will cover that client can only can a specific data within the SUPPORTS table.
2) Alternatively, create a dynamic table which is created specifically for "Client B" for instance for SUPPORT table and it will be called such as ClientBSupport table. Something that can be common it will be shared such as like look-up table.
Couple consideration though:
1) Considered client wanting to backup this table. Obviosly it has too querying based on the client id to get the right data.
2) Security withing that table. Is the data needs to be incrypted ... I guess this is expensive excercise.
3) Possibly have a model that access to this table in querying directly etc etc.
4) If the Support table is getting larger and larger and it's not fair for small client accessing the small information which has equal to the one that has big records? Cause it's sharing table.
Any inputs I am really appreciated.
Thanks

Hi,Facts:I created a database to support an application that tracks events ondifferent objects. The two main tables are tbl_Object andtbl_EventLog. Each table has unique ID and on the tbl_EventLog thereis FK for a record in the tbl_Object. The events are inserted all thetime for the same or different objects from the tbl_Object. There areabout 600,000 objects in the tbl_Object and 1,500,000 (and growing)events in tbl_EventLog.Question:The user often wants to know what the last event was for a specificobject. What is the best way of retrieving the last event?Should I simply do a max(eventdatetime) on a specific object? orShould I add a LastEventID column to tbl_Object and update it everytime a new event is inserted? or any other way to implement it?I chose the second method because I didn't think it made sense searchthe event table everytime the user wants to know the last event, but Iwanted to know what the experts thought. Please let me know what you think.Thank you,Oran Levin

I have 6 columns:
Column1a, Column1, Column2a, Column2, Column3a, Column3
I need a statement that will go through the whole table as follows:
For each row, if column3 is not null then return column3 as columnB and column3a as ColumnA.
If column3 is null then if column2 is not null then return column2 as columnB and column2a as columnA.
If column3 & column2 is null then return column1 as columnB and column1a as columnA.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

I have an opportunity to rebuild a database model with the express purpose of improving query performance. So given the following I have a few questions.
Table A (~500M records)
Primary Key Field (int)
Field 1 (varchar)
Field 2 (varchar)
Field 3 (varchar)
Field 4 (varchar)
Field 5 (varchar)
Table B (1B+ records)
Primary Key Field (int)
Foreign Key Field (int)
Field 1 (varchar)
Field 2 (varchar)
Field 3 (varchar)
Field 4 (varchar)
Field 5 (varchar)
* Assumed: Tables are inner joined on all queries. The database is readonly.
-- Most of my lookups are based on querying Field 1 of Table A. The data content of Field 1, Table A is 90% unique.
1) Would it be more beneficial to put the clustered index on Field 1 instead of the PK field in Table A?
2) Can an Identity column be non-clustered?
3) Alternatively, would it be beneficial to build a separate lookup table with just the PK & Field 1 of Table A, with a clustered index on the lookup table Field 1 which I join on Table A? (did that make sense?)
-- I have a secondary lookup that performs queries on Fields 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 of Table B
1) Would it be more beneficial to create an additional indexed lookup column of the concantenated values of Fields 1-5 of Table B versus a covering index of all 5 columns?
2) Does a clustered index have to be unique?
3) Would a clustered index be more beneficial over Fields 1-5 or the special lookup column versus the PK or FK fields?
4) Would creating a special lookup table with just the requisite fields be more beneficial?
An extra question. The existing data model uses the CHAR datatype for all columns less than 9 characters wide and the columns are set to allow nulls. This requires every select statement to COALESCE() and RTRIM() all these columns. I intend to make all (affected) columns VARCHAR, NOT NULL with a default value of a 0-length string.
Will this enhance query performance?
Thanks in advance for any insight.

Yesterday I received a response to my CI/CS Collation problem and therecommendation was to try and restore a CI Collation database to a CSCollation database. After creating a blank CS database a full restore(Force restore over existing database) does change the Collation toCI. I'm unsure as to how I can restore without changing theCollation. Any suggestions?

Disaster Recovery Options based on the following criteria.
--Currently running SQL 2012 standard edition
--We have 18000 databases (same schema across databases)- majority of databases are less than 2gb-- across 64 instances approximately
--Recovery needs to happen within 1 hour (Not sure that this is realistic
-- We are building a new data center and building dr from the ground up.
What I have looked into is:
1. Transactional Replication: Too Much Data Not viable
2. AlwaysOn Availability Groups (Need enterprise) Again too many databases and would have to upgrade all instances
3. Log Shipping is a viable option and the only one I can come up with that would work right now. Might be a management nightmare but with this many databases probably all options with be a nightmare.

Hi! Im working on a webapplication and has serious thoughts about howto optimize my table structure. To explain:
My tablestructure today
(simplified):tbl_customerscust_idname.....tbl_contactscon_idname.....tbl_groupsgrp_idname.....
My subtables look like this(alternative 1):tbl_sub_phonephone_idparent_typeparent_idphone_areaphone_nr.....tbl_sub_emailmail_idparent_typeparent_idemail.....
As seen above every contact, group and customer can be assigned an unlimited amount of phonenumbers or emailadresses. For example when entering a new email or a customer following will be inserted in tbl_sub_email: parent_type = 'cst', parent_id= '2' (the cust_id from tbl_customers), email = 'gwerg@fe.com'The problem is i am uncertain if this is a very unefficient way of handling it? i see two alternatives:
Alternative 2:i create x subtables for each table for example tbl_customers will get its mailadresses and phonenumbers contained in tbl_customers_phone and tbl_customers_emailWhat i am uncertain of here is if this would make things alot more troublesome when searching på example after a specific phonenumber.Alternative 3:
(simplified):tbl_customerscust_idname.....tbl_contactscon_idname.....tbl_groupsgrp_idname.....
tables connection objects to subobjects
tbl_customers_phoneidcust_idphone_idtbl_contacts_phoneidcon_idphone_idtbl_customers_mailidcust_idmail_id
subtables tbl_sub_phonephone_idphone_areaphone_nr.....tbl_sub_emailmail_idemail.....
Ranking these three models, wich would be the most efficient and most inefficient performanswise? What i want to avoid is performanceproblems when listing the objects, my indexing skills are a bit limited although im doing alot of reading and testing regarding this.So thats why im asking for advice so that i can minimize the need of rebuilding the table structure when the application already has been starting to get used.I also have another general question.
I have alot of select querys when i need to fetch data from several different tables. Most of them is that i for example get an application from tbl_applications table, and that tables contains the columns cat1, cat2 and cat3 (wich are categories and contain the primary key integer to the tbl_sub_categorys table)With 3 joins i retrieve these 3 category names returning 1 result with all the info i need.Since ive been getting som strange results from the query analyzer(i got results that using clustered indexing for the primary key resulted in a slower query (higher cost)) i actually have another question. Can it generally be summed up that a single query(join or subquery) generaly ils faster than getting the data in separate selects? In the example above this i have the options either of using joins = 1 query or doing 2 querys and sorting the categorys codewise in aspx pages or doing 4 querys, one for the app followed by 1 for every category.Any input regarding this?
As i said earlier im looking for the most efficient way of doing the things abov, would greatly appriechiate any input!

I have about a 35000 record table. There are about 14 entries in this table that relate to "sections". Each of these sections can have up to 20 values. This lends itself to a design like:
big_table [one-to-one] big_table_has_sections [many-to-many] sections
or, more concretely:
BuildingConstructionType
relates to
ConstructionHasTypes
relates to
Types
Where BuildingConstructionType is one of 14 fields in the 35000 record "big" table, ConstructionHasTypes is the one-to-one intermediary relation that relates many-to-many with Types (the sections).
Unfortunately, with 35000 records, this big_table_has_sections seems like it might bloat. Is this a good solution?

I am using BI Dev Studio for SS2005 in a research (as opposed to a production) environment. Often I want to compare the results of multiple models using the same attributes. If I switch to a different model, the Design view completely resets. Is there any way to retain the same field names with different models in the Design view?
My current workaround is to give my models similar names with AR, DT, CL, LOG, NN suffixes and make global changes in the DMX.
I have consulted the following without finding an answer:

I'm trying to write some T-SQL code for adding some fills and thrillsto backups but ran into a snag. Is there a way to query what backupmodel a database is using? I can see it if I right click a database,go to properties, select the options tab, and then can see the currentmodel (full, bulk-logged, and simple) but I would need to hard codeeach database. In the spirit of automation, I'd rather query for thetype and then work around that instead. But I've been all over themaster database and can't seem to find any field that will indicatethe backup type.Any guru's out there that can point me in the right direction? Thanks,Utah

Hi,
I have a problem in design the tables. My main task is to learn how to give the Match Score.
I have hundreds of dataset and one of them is like this:
Test Record Number: 19
Prospect ID = 254040088233400441105260031881009
Match Score = 95
Input Record Fielding ( eg wordnumber[Field] ) : 1[1] 2[1] 3[11] 4[11] 5[11]
Prospect Word = 1 type = 1 match level = 4 input word = 1 input type = 1
Prospect Word = 2 type = 2 match level = 0 input word = NA input type = NA
Prospect Word = 3 type = 3 match level = 4 input word = 2 input type = 1
Prospect Word = 4 type = 11 match level = 4 input word = 3 input type = 11
Prospect Word = 5 type = 13 match level = 4 input word = 4 input type = 11
Prospect Word = 6 type = 14 match level = 4 input word = 5 input type = 11
Now I have all my data stored in the DB and I seperated them into 3 tables and their structures are:
1) prospect (id, testrecordnumber, prospectID, matchscore)
2) inputfieldind (id, prspid, inputword, inputfield)
3) prospectinfo (id, prspid, prospectword, prospecttype, matchlevel, inputword, inputtype)
and the prspid in table 2 & 3 refers to the prospectID in table 1.What I did was setting:
a) prospect table as case table with id AS key, prospectID AS input & predictable;
b) and the other two as nested tables with inputword/inputfield AS key & input, prospectword/prospecttype/matchlevel/inputword/inputtype AS key & input .
But it shows error for having multiply key columns...
And also I am thinking about using the Naive bayes algorithm. Can I also have some suggestion on this?
Thanks

I am new to Reporting Services and hope that what I am looking to do is within capabilities :-)
I have many identical schema databases residing on a number of data servers. These support individual clients accessing them via a web interface. What I need to be able to do is run reports across all of the databases. So the layout is:
Dataserver A
Database A1
Database A2
Database A3
Dataserver B
Database B1
Database B2
Dataserver C
Database C1
Database C2
Database C3
I would like to run a report that pulls table data from A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, C1, C2, C3
Now the actual number of servers is 7 and the number of databases is close to 1000. All servers are running SQL2005.
Is this something that Reporting Services is able to handle or do I need to look at some other solution?
Thanks,
Michael

We need to install CI database on CS server, and there are some issueswith stored procedures.Database works and have CI collation (Polish_CI_AS). Server hascoresponding CS collation (Polish_CS_AS). Most queries and proceduresworks but some does not :-(We have table Customer which contains field CustomerID.Query "SELECT CUSTOMERID FROM CUSTOMER" works OK regardless ofcharacter case (we have table Customer not CUSTOMER)Following TSQL generate error message that must declare variable @id(in lowercase)DECLARE @ID INT (here @ID in uppercase)SELECT @id=CustomerID FROM Customer WHERE .... (here @id in lowercase)I know @ID is not equal to @id in CS, but database is CI and tablenames Customer and CUSTOMER both works. This does not work forvariables.I suppose it is tempdb collation problem (CS like a server collationis). I tried a property "Identifier Case Sensitivity" for myconnection, but it is read only and have value 8 (Mixed) by default -this is OK I think.DO I MISS SOMETHING ????

Hi All,
SQL newbie here. I just looked at my Job Activity monitor and found that my Transaction log backups are failing. I looked at the error and it read as follows:
Executing the query "BACKUP LOG [OperationsManager] TO DISK = N'D:\SQL\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Backup\OperationsManager\OperationsManager_backup_200805061000.trn' WITH RETAINDAYS = 1, NOFORMAT, NOINIT, NAME = N'OperationsManager_backup_20080506100001', SKIP, REWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10
" failed with the following error: "The statement BACKUP LOG is not allowed while the recovery model is SIMPLE. Use BACKUP DATABASE or change the recovery model using ALTER DATABASE.
BACKUP LOG is terminating abnormally.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.
I read some of the posts regarding this error, but I am not sure how to do the steps. How do I change the recovery model? I am new to this so I have no clue how to do this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Hello,
I have a question regarding the backup for the database in Simple Recovery Model.
In this Model, I know we can restore only to the last full backup or can use differential
Backup, if implemented as a part of backup.
But my point of confusion is about the backup of '.ldf' file, should those file should be backed up in the
Maintenance Plan, if yes does it help in reducing the size of Log file?
Do we need the backup of '.ldf' in phase of Restoring?
As I mention my database has Simple Recovery Model, but the size of log file is around 20GB,
Could not understand why as in this Model, normally it automatically truncate the Log file?
Help me to clear my these doubts,
thanks,

Hi there
I'm getting this message on my third automated backup of the transaction logs of the day. Both databases are in full recovery mode, both successfully backed up at 01.00. The transaction logs backed up perfectly happily at 01:30 and 05:30, but failed at 09:30.
The only difference between 05:30 and 09:30's backups is that the log files were shrunk at 08:15 (the databases in question are the ones that sit under ILM2007, and keeping the log files small keeps the system running better).
Is it possible that shrinking the log files causes the database to think that there hasn't been a full database backup?
Thanks
Jane

Ok, I'm doing a football database for fixtures and stuff. The problem I am having is that in a fixture, there is both a home, and an away team. The tables as a result are something like this:
-------
Fixture
-------
fix_id
fix_date
fix_played
----
Team
----
tem_id
tem_name
-----------
TeamFixture
-----------
fix_id
tem_id
homeorawayteam
goals
It's not exactly like that, but you get the point. The question is, can I do a fixture query which results in one record per fixture, showing both teams details. The first in a hometeam field and the second in an away team field.
Fixture contains the details about the fixture like date and fixture id and has it been played
Team contains team info like team id, name, associated graphic
TeamFixture is the table which links the fixture to it's home and away team.
TeamFixture exists to prevent a many to many type relationship.
Make sense? Sorry if this turns out to be really easy, just can't get my head around it at the mo!

In other words how do deal with case sensitiviy issues.
