DB Design :: Need To Recreate All Indexes From Primary To Secondary File Group
Jul 14, 2015
I have a database around 500 GB. right now the database have only one data file and one log, it has only one filegroup also.all the indexes and table are placed in Primary Filegroup . we are going to separate them. the planing is to move all the indexes to Secondary filegroup and all the table will be in Primary filegroup.But there will be a problem while implementing it because there are around 600 tables and each table have at least 2 non-clustered index , so is there any way to move all the index to Secondary Filegroup.

partition with single file group or multiple file group which one best.
we have some report running from partition table, few reports don't have any partition Key and after creating 400 partition with 400 file group it is slow.what is best practices to crate 400 file group or single file group.

I have come across a user that has error 2525 errors on sysobjects tables throughout their SQL 6.5 system. The ids match and I can identify the index. But as they are system tables I cannot drop or rebuild the indexes.
Any ideas please?
The errors have been occuring for some time, so it is not an option to restore. I would like to avoid having to transfer data to and from another SQL Server.
Many Thanks

With help of others on this group, I've been learning and researchingabout indexes; an area I neglected.I see I can specify which filegroup I wish to create an index, whichthe default is Primary.I have more than one drive in my SQL server where I put data and logson their own logical raid groups.My databases are SIMPLE, so they dont use much, if any logs (none as Iunderstand).I was thinking of adding an additional file to my database and use itsolely for the indexes.Any thoughts?SQL Server 2005 Enterprise x64 SP28 disk SAS Raid 1+0 w/ 512mb ram w/ battery backup.Thanks,Rob

Is there any utility to migrate the existing indexes on default filegroup to a new user defined file group? The only way that I know is to delete the index and recreate with new filegroup.
How about for table? Is there any utility for migrating the existing tables to a different filegroup? The only way that I know is to create a clustered index on the new filegroup which will move the table to the new filegroup. If a clustered index exists then drop the clustered index and recreate it with the new filegroup
I am looking for an existing utility which would do the above?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanx in advance.

Why shrinkfile empty file does not redistribute data evenly in the primary file group with multiple files:
Please run the script attached to see what the end result is.
This is what I set up last night on my test machine.
1) Create database [FGTest] size 200MB
2) Create table called TEST on primary
3) Insert 40MB of data into test
4) Create another file group called temp in primary size 200MB
5) Shrinkfile('FGTest',emptyfile) so that all data is transfered from FGTest into temp file group.
6) Add another 2 files called DATA2 and DATA3. Both are 200MB.
7) We now have 3 empty files that I want data distributed evenly on. FGTest, DATA2 & DATA3
8) Shrinkfile('temp',emptyfile) to move all the data from temp over the 3 file groups evenly
I would expect at this stage to have the following:
FGTest = 13MB,
DATA2 = 13MB,
DATA3 = 13MB
(40MB of data over 3 files should be about 13 MBish in each file)
What I actually end up with is this:
FGTest = 20MB
DATA1 = 10MB
DATA2 = 10MB
It looks as though SQL Server is allocating 50% of all data to the original file and then 50% evenly over
the remaining files in PRIMARY.

Weird. I have an Agent job that populates some warehouse data every night. It's been working fine for over a year. Then it fails with a message that thePRIMARY file group is full. The database is set to Simple recovery, automatic, unrestricted growth by 10% for both the log file and the data file. The drive it's on has 96GB free. The data file is 1.5GB and the log is 2MB and there's not very much fluctuation in the amoutn of data going into it.
Anybody have an idea why that would happen?
Thanks for any insight,Pete

This is production server
Total db size is 132186 MB
data file is 12000 MB, set automatically grow
and restrict file growth is 121024 MB
Now there is 30 GB space on drive
I have added space to file 3 times(1GB, 10GB, 3 GB) and incresed restrict file growth also(5GB). database is in simple recovery mode.

Customer site has detached their database and deleted the .ldf file and reattached because they want to decrease the log file size. They set their log size to restricted file growth and 5mb. After about 20 minutes they started getting "Transaction log is full" so I had them up the transaction log to 50mb. After about another 20 mins everyone on the network started getting errors saying that data cannot be added because the PRIMARY file group was full ("Could not allocate space for object TrussLumber in Database ATP because the primary file group is full").
There is plenty of disk space so I know thats not the problem. And they can add data to other databases, so I cant imagine what could possibly be causing this....Can anyone help me out?
Thanks!
Craig

I used the option "Script Table" --> "Create to" in SQL Server Management Studio Express for a table with secondary index (like IX_IndexName), but in the .sql script file there is only the instruction for the primary key and not for the secondary (I expected something like CREATE INDEX). What can I do?

Hello,
I would like to know how do I carry out this two cases in efficient way:
1. I have two SQL 2005 servers running. One as primary, one as secondary. I would like to synchronize or replicate the transactions at real-time.
2. When primary goes down, I would like my secondary server to take place in needless of IP changes and application settings.
If you have a good architecture on this, please share with me. I am not sure whether my questions are clear enough or not. I also will be reading some articles about these. Thank you in advance.
Regards,
Paing

A little background on what I am trying to achieve first. We are moving to Azure virtual machines and we will have 8 disks on the SQL Server box. I am adding more files to the primary file group and each file will go on its own drive. I am then rebalancing data across these files by rebuilding all of the indexes on the tables which is working fine. No problems so far all is good.
I now have an additional problem. If there is a lob or blob column on the table, rebuilding the clustered index and all the non clustered indexes doesn't rebalance the blob or lob data across the disks such as it does with in row data.
I cannot find any articles on rebalancing lob or blob data because all the articles say to move to a new file group. I do not want a new file group, I just want to use the primary file group where the data already resides, and just redistribute it evenly in the same way that I can in row data which is working fine.
One solution I thought about was to BCP data out of the table, truncate the table and then BCP back into the table which I imagine would have the desired effect of distributing the data evenly over the files.

Hi all..!If I want to split an SQL DB into several physical files (as its 500GBdisk ran out of space, won't even run shrinks any more, and we boughtanother 500GB disk to add to the PC)then what is the difference between:Adding another File to the primary group which will reside on the newgroup;Adding another file in another group.We do not want to set any db objects (Tables, indexes)to a secondary file, as this will involve lengthy data movingoperations. We would like the DB to continue working from where it isutilizing the added space in a contigous (striped) manner.Will striping occur in both cases? as I understand striping it meansthat our stuck SQL Server will awake back to life as it will now have500GB more data for its DB, even though we haven't set any of itsobjects (tables, indexes) to explicitly use the secondary NDF file onthe new disk?or will it only utilize the new space if we set some objects to resideon that NDF?for example if we run large queries which crash now (due to lack ofspace) when we add the second drive will they start to work as theprocess will grow striped from the full drive to the new drive, even ifall the queries' source tables are all still set to the old drive?Thanks for any replies?

I was working on a job to send me info each morning about database file free space and was noticing some odd things when looking at the log file VLFs for one of my databases in an AlwaysOn availability group.When I run DBCC LOGINFO on the secondary replica for this database, I get what I expect and most VLFs have a status of 0 (indicating the VLFs are reusable or unused). When I run DBCC LOGINFO on the primary replica, all of the VLFs have a status of 2 (active or recoverable).
Since log backups on the secondary replica in AlwaysOn still truncate the log in the primary replica, I would expect that the VLFs in the primary replica would also be mostly in a reusable or unused state. My log file sizes are the same size on each server and my backups are completing successfully. what might be causing the VLFs on the primary replica to have a status of 2 in DBCC LOGINFO when taking log backups from the secondary replica?

I have a 2 node cluster with 2 standalone 2k14 instances having alwayson setup. As per client requirement we have created a client access point with a cname alias in dns to connect to secondary replica. Now, everytime whenerver the roles switch over one has to manually move this resource from the previous secondary node to the new secondary node. This is tedious, and should not be done manually either, so I am looking for a way to automate it so that as soon as the role switches over, the resource group after some time should also switch over to the current secondary.
Env details
xa (current primary)
y2a (secondary)
client access point (resource group): aglreadtest

I have been creating databases in SQL 2008 with a primary filegroup for the system objects and a secondary, marked Default, for the data.
We are preparing a migration to SQL 2014, and the administrator is complaining he won't adopt this structure on the new servers because 'there is no benefit' and 'a backup cannot be restored (!?)'.

Currently in my environment we are using SQL server 2012.We setup Alwayson with synchronous commit.Details of existing AlwaysOn: one primary and two secondary.
Primary: On-Premise server.
Secondary1: On-Premise server.
Secondary2: Azure VM.
Requirement: We need to add Secondary3 New Azure VM on same AG with asynchronous mode or synchronous mode.
                                                                                                          Or
We need to create one more AG on same DB and add the new replica with asynchronous.Is it possible above 2 option in this scenario? My cluster environment is Manual failover only not auto failover.

I have a scenario where a customer is going to be using Log Shipping to the DR site; however, we need to maintain the normal backup strategy on the current system. (i.e. Nightly Full, Every 6 Hour Differential and Hourly Transaction Log backup)I know how to setup Transaction Log Shipping and Fail-over to DR and backup but now the local backup strategy is going to be an issue. I use the [URL] .... maintenance solution currently.
Is it even possible to do regular backups locally keeping data integrity for your backup strategy with Transaction Log Shipping enabled?

I have a SQL 2014 SP1 set of servers with two asynchronous copies of an availability group. Â One of the asynchronous sites is down and SQL can no longer replicate the changes. I need to understand how long SQL Server can continue this way before the secondary replica will no longer be able to catch up. I assume this is really tied to the transaction log on the primary replica but would like it clarified.

If I have a table with Col1 + Col2 as PK. But most of the queries use Col1, Col2, Col3 and Col4 in the queries, should I create another unique index on this combination? If not, my queries do an index scan. Just wondering is there a general rule for this kind of situation as I have a lot of such cases in my database.
