DB Design: One Table Or Multiple Tables?

Dec 28, 2005

I am developing a Content management system of sorts and I want it
to be pretty flexible. I have noticed that with web content (News,
Articles, Events, FAQs) that there is a lot of similarity between these
items. They all have the same basic fields:
TitleSynopsisBodyStartDateEndDate

(for News, Articles, FAQs start and end date can be used for content
expiration. For events, they are used for the actual event dates.)

But for some types of content, I will need fields specific to that
type. For instance, I want to have a few custom settings for a "Photo
Gallery" type, like, how many rows/columns of thumbnails to display per
page.

I feel like I have 3 options, but would really appreciate your advice. I created diagrams for the 3 options, located here:  http://nontalk.com/dbdesign/

Database Design Selecting Multiple Different Child Tables

Sep 19, 2000

I want to have a linking table say for example we call this a claim. Based on the claim number you need to relate to one of say 6 different types of claims. The types of claims related to their own individual parent table. (individual because each type of claim tracks completely different information) does anyone have an idea on how to set this up?

Sample Structure

table = Claim
Field 1 = ClaimTypeA_ID
Field 2 = ClaimTypeB_ID
Field 3 = ClaimTypeC_ID
Field 4 = ClaimTypeD_ID
Field 5 = ClaimTypeE_ID
Field 6 = ClaimTypeF_ID

The six field relate to the 6 different tables ID.

If I do this how do I store the data? put 0's in each of the claim types that are not used???

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Case Table And Nested Tables Design Problem

Oct 20, 2006

Hi,

I have a problem in design the tables.  My main task is to learn how to give the Match Score.

I have hundreds of dataset and one of them is like this:

Test Record Number: 19
Prospect ID = 254040088233400441105260031881009
Match Score = 95
Input Record Fielding  ( eg wordnumber[Field] ) : 1[1] 2[1] 3[11] 4[11] 5[11]
   Prospect Word = 1 type = 1 match level = 4 input word  = 1 input type  = 1
   Prospect Word = 2 type = 2 match level = 0 input word  = NA input type  = NA
   Prospect Word = 3 type = 3 match level = 4 input word  = 2 input type  = 1
   Prospect Word = 4 type = 11 match level = 4 input word  = 3 input type  = 11
   Prospect Word = 5 type = 13 match level = 4 input word  = 4 input type  = 11
   Prospect Word = 6 type = 14 match level = 4 input word  = 5 input type  = 11

Now I have all my data stored in the DB and I seperated them into 3 tables and their structures are:

1) prospect (id, testrecordnumber, prospectID, matchscore)

2) inputfieldind (id, prspid, inputword, inputfield)

3) prospectinfo (id, prspid, prospectword, prospecttype, matchlevel, inputword, inputtype)

and the prspid in table 2 & 3 refers to the prospectID in table 1.What I did was setting:

a) prospect table as case table with id AS key, prospectID AS input & predictable;

b) and the other two as nested tables with inputword/inputfield AS key & input, prospectword/prospecttype/matchlevel/inputword/inputtype AS key & input .

But it shows error for having multiply key columns...

And also I am thinking about using the Naive bayes algorithm.  Can I also have some suggestion on this?

Thanks

Analysis :: SSAS Design - Multiple Keys Of Same Dimension In Fact Table

Mar 19, 2012

I am developing a BI solution on SQL Server 2008 R2 and how to handle multiple referances to the same dimension from a fact table!

Here is the scenario;

Fact_Contracts (# M)
ServiceProvider_CompanyID, Client_CompanyID, Amount_USD
Dim_Company( hundreds)
ID,  CityID, ProfessionID, CompanyName
Dim_City
ID, CityName
Dim_Profession
  ID, ProfessionName

As u can see there is two company references in my fact table, and the schema is in snowflake. My customer requirements state that the Contracts' amounts can be aggregated/filtered for/by, ServiceProviderCompany, its city/profession or ClientCompay, its city/profession.

First thing came in to my mind is to dublicate whole dimension structure (one for serviceproviders, one for clients), which i thought that there should be another way around?

DB Design :: How To Copy Data From Existing Table To Normalized Tables

May 20, 2015

I normalized the below tables but I am finding it difficult to copy data to the new tables.  How do I copy data from existing table to the normalized tables? see the table structure below and other supporting information:

SKU_DATA(SKU,SKU_Description,Department,Buyer) Note: this table already has data in it.
CREATE TABLE SKU_DATA (
SKU
   Integer NOT
NULL,

[code].....

The table structure above have two three determinants( SKU,SKU_Description and Buyer).  SKU and SKU_Description are candidate keys. Primary key is SKU.

Normalization : SKU_DATA(SKU,SKU_Description, Buyer)
 BUYER(Buyer,Department)

SQLCE V3.5: Single SDF With Multiple Tables Or Multiple SDFs With Fewer Tables

Mar 21, 2008

Hi! I have a general SQL CE v3.5 design question related to table/file layout. I have an system that has multiple tables that fall into categories of data access. The 3 categories of data access are:

1 is for configuration-related data. There is one application that will read/write to the data, and a second application that will read the data on startup.

1 is for high-performance temporal storage of data. The data objects are all the same type, but they are our own custom object and not just simple types.

1 is for logging where the data will be permanent - unless the configured size/recycling settings cause a resize or cleanup. There will be one application writing alot [potentially] of data depending on log settings, and another application searching/reading sections of data.
When working with data and designing the layout, I like to approach things from a data-centric mindset, because this seems to result in a better performing system. That said, I am thinking about using 3 individual SDF files for the above data access scenarios - as opposed to a single SDF with multiple tables. I'm thinking this would provide better performance in SQL CE because the query engine will not have alot of different types of queries going against the same database file. For instance, the temporal storage is basically reading/writing/deleting various amounts of data. And, this is different from the logging, where the log can grow pretty large - definitely bigger than the default 128 MB. So, it seems logical to manage them separately.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions from the SQL CE experts with regard to my approach. If there are any tips/tricks with respect to different data access scenarios - taking into account performance, type of data access, etc. - I would love to take a look at that.

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions,
Bob

Inserting From Datas In One Table From Multiple Tables

Dec 5, 2007

Hi guys,I have a problem with my query. What i want to happen is to populate my table EV_NOTIFICATIONDETAILS (Docownerid, CurrentSentDate, LastSentDate, detailsID, GeneralRemarks) using the datas from the two different tables EV_NOTIFICATIONHEADER and EV_DOCDETAILS.I tried to create some a query but im having a error. The problem is once i insert the data from datas to the columns Docownerid, CurrentSentDate, LastSentDate the datas are stored in the database and when i tried to insert the remaining columns TO EV_NOTIFICATIONDETAILS detailsID, GeneralRemarks getting the datas from EV_DOCDETAIL it creates a new set of records in the database. Meaning it doesn't update the records in the table EV_NOTIFICATIONDETAILS but it creates a new set of records.here's my code:INSERT INTO EV_NOTIFICATIONDETAILS (Docownerid, CurrentNoticeSentDate, LastNoticeSentDate) SELECTDocownerid, CurrentSentDate, LastSentDateFROMEV_NOTIFICATIONHEADERINSERT INTO EV_NOTIFICATIONDETAILS (detailsID,GeneralRemarks) SELECTdetailsID,GeneralRemarksFROMEV_DOCDETAIL   Any ideas and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Use Single Table Or Multiple Separate Tables?

Sep 7, 2005

Hi,
We are building an application for online system for people to place ADs for selling various used items like Car, Electronics, Houses, Books etc.
If someone selling a car then he can fill out headline, year, make, model, mileage, transmission, condition, color, price, description, contact etc.
Similarly if someone selling a digital camera he will fillout headline, memory, zoom, megapixel, maker, model, color, batter, description etc.
Option 1: I can have a main table to hold the common attributes of all different types of ADs (headline, images, contact, price, color, condition, description)
+ 1 table to store string values of all ADs (car: maker, model, square feet (if house), memory, megapixel (camera) etc)
+ 1 table to store the droplist select values(car: transmission, door, seat etc; house: year_built)
pros: single table for all ADs. unique IDs for all ADs, easy to extend as new attributes can be dropped easily.
cons: lot of physical reads of 2nd and 3rd table from join. 10 times physical reads compared to option 2 when reading 5000 records.
Option 2: have different set of table for each AD type. Car will have its own main table + 1 table to store multiselect list box values.
Similarly housing will have its own set of tables
pros: 10% less physical read than option 1.
cons: hard to add new attributes. We have to modify the main table by adding one column.
Query will go to different table based on the category.
Do you have any suggestions on which way to go?Thanks

Transact SQL :: Compare A Table Against Multiple Tables

Jul 16, 2015

I downloaded a day's worth of data into a single table first and named it as Full_Day_Data_Table.(10,000 records)

Later for some other purpose, downloaded the same day's data into five small tables.

Now when I compare the total row count of  Full_Day_Data_Table vs Sum of row counts of five small tables, the row count does not match.

So, I would like to know the records that exists in Full_Day_Data_Table and not in small tables.

Insert Items From One To Table To Multiple Smaller Tables

Nov 15, 2004

I have a table that I filled with data imported from another database.

What I need to do is now take this huge table and break apart the information and put it into 5 smaller tables.

So I have a huge insert statement.

I have one main table called Property with two keys. One key is a "Prop_ID" and the other is "owner" where Prop_Id is a automated unique ID. Once the information is inserted into that table, I then get the Unique ID that it was given, and I then used that ID to insert into the other tables.

The problem I am encountering is I keep getting the following error

Violation of PRIMARY KEY constraint 'PK_Prop_Res_Detail'. Cannot insert duplicate key in object 'Prop_Res_Detail'.
The statement has been terminated.

I have an idea what might be going wrong, but I am not sure. What I want to happen is that I want the query to look at the first row of the huge table and then do all 4 of the inserts, and then go to the next row. But I think it is trying to all the inserts into the property table, and then go on to the Prop_Res_Detail table and that is why I am getting that error.

Any help is greatly appreicated.

here is the code..

Code:

Multiple Tables - Loop Through Query Switching Table Name?

Mar 8, 2012

I would like to run the same query on multiple tables. So say I have a list of tables

@tableList = a|b|c|d

And then I have my query looping through the tables

for (@table in tableList)
{
update from @table
set = ''
}

Is there a simple way to do this in an mssql query, if so how do I get to loop through the query switching the table name?

Greetings,

Iam new to SQLl2005. Iam using DTS to transfer data from my source to the warehouse. I have a couple of tables in my source whein I have to join these to tables fields and insert the same in teh warehouse fact table. I have used a Join query in my Oledb source component, What other component needs to be used to insert the data into the fact table.
I also need to extract same data with aggregation and insert the same into an another Fact table.

Copying Rows From Multiple Tables To A Single Table

Sep 20, 2007

Hi,

I have 3 tables with the follwing schema
Table <Category>
{

UniqueID,
LastDate DateTime
}

Assume the follwing tables with data following the above schema

Table Cat1
{

1, D1
2, D2
3, D3
}
Table Cat2
{

2, D4
3,D5
4, D6
}
Table Cat3
{

1, D7
3,D8
5,D9
}

I have a Master and the schema is as follows
Table master
{

UniqueId,
Cat1 DateTime, -- This is same as the Table name
Cat2 DateTime, -- This is same as the Table name
Cat3 DateTime -- This is same as the Table name
}

After inserting the data from all these 3 tables, I want the my master table to look like this
Table Master
{

UniqueId cat1 cat2 Cat3
------------ --------- ------- -----------
1 D1 NULL D7
2 D2 D4 NULL
3 D3 D5 D8
4 NULL D6 NULL
5 NULL NULL D9
}

Please remember the column names will be same as that of table names

can any one pelase let me know the query t o acheive this

Thanks for your quick response

Insert Multiple Rows To Table Based On Values From Other 2 Tables.

Nov 21, 2007

I have a form to assign JOB SITES to previously created PROJECT.  The  JOB SITES appear in the DataList as it varies based on customer. It can be 3 to 50 JOB SITES per PROJECT.
I have "PROJECT" table with all necessary fields for project information and "JOBSITES" table for job sites. I also created a new table called "PROJECTSITES"  which has only 2 columns:  "ProjectId" and "SiteId".
What I am trying to do is to insert multiple rows into that "PROJECTSITES" table based on which checkbox was checked.  The checkbox is located next to each site and I want to be able to select only the ones I need. Btw the Datalist is located inside of a formview and has it's own datasource which already distincts which JOBSITES to display.
Sample:
ProjectId    -    SiteId
1   -   5
1    -   9
1    -   16
1    -   18
1    -   20
1    -   27
1    -   31
ProjectId stays the same, only values for SiteId are being different.
I hope I explaining it right. Do I have to use some sort of loop to go through the automatically populated DataList records and how do I make a multiple inserts to database table? We use SQL Server 2005 and VB for code behind. Please ask if I missed on some information. Thank you in advance.

Inserting Values From Multiple Tables To Only One Column Of A Seperate Table

Dec 11, 2004

Hi all,

I want to produce some output for Mainframe application. For that I want to insert values from multiple table as source to a single column (huge in size)of a different table (Destination table). There may be same related records in all of the source tables with the primary key. When I export values from the source tables , each related records should be insterted to the destination table's field (multiple entries for each table). Please advise.

Referential Integrity - Linking Multiple Tables To Transaction Table

Mar 3, 2006

I have transaction table where the rows entered into the transactioncan come a result of changes that take place if four different tables.So the situation is as follows:Transaction Table-TranId-Calc AmountTable 1 (the amount is inserted into the transaction table)- Tb1Id- Tb1AmtTable 2 (an amount is calculated based on the percentage and insertedinto the transaction table)-Tbl2Id-Tb2PercentageTable 3 (the amount is inserted into the transaction table)-Tbl3Id-Tbl3AmutTable 4 (an amount is calculated based on the percentage and insertedinto the transaction table. )-Tbl2Id-Tb2PercentageHow do I create referential integrity between the Transaction table andthe rest of the tables. When I make changes to the values in Table 1 -4, I need to be able to reflect this in the Transaction table.Thanks.

Tables Joined On Multiple Columns, Exclude Records Found In Table A

Nov 7, 2006

I'm using SQL server 200

Table A has columns CompressedProduct, Tool, Operation

Table B in a differnt database has columns ID, Product, Tool Operation

I cannot edit table A. I can select records from A and insert into B. And I can select only the records that are in both tables.

But I want to be able to select any records that are in table A but not in Table B.

ie. I want to select records from A where the combination of Product, Tool and Operaton does not appear in Table B, even if all 3 on their own do appear.

This code return all the records from A. I need to filter out the records found in Table B.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SELECT ID, CompressedProduct, oq.Tool, oq.Operation FROM OPENQUERY (Lisa_Link,
'SELECT DISTINCT CompressedProduct, Tool, Operation FROM tblToolStatus ts
JOIN tblProduct p ON ts.ProductID = p.ProductID
JOIN tblTool t ON ts.ToolID = t.ToolID
JOIN tblOperation o ON ts.OperationID = o.OperationID
WHERE ts.ToolID=66
') oq
LEFT JOIN Family f on oq.CompressedProduct = f.Product and oq.Tool = f.Tool and oq.Operation = f.Operation

DB Design :: Table Design For Packages

Aug 18, 2015

I would like to create a table called product. My objective is to get list of packages available for each product in data grid view column while selecting each product. Each product may have different packages type (eg:- Nos, CTN, OTR etc). Some product may have two packages and some for 3 packages etc. Quantity in each packages also may be differ ( for eg:- for some CTN may contain 12 nos or in other case 8 nos etc). Prices for each packages also will be different that also need to show.  How to design the table..

Product name   :
Nestle milk |
Rainbow milk
packages  :
CTN,OTR, NOs |

CTN, NOs
Price:
50,20,5 |
40,6

(Remarks for your reference):CTN=10nos, OTR=4 nos
| CTN=8 Nos

Database Design: Multiple DB&#39;s Vs One DB?

Jul 3, 1999

Good Morning to Everyone :-)

We're having DB Design discussions in our office for a new project. Basically, we're trying to decide on a DB Solution that allows us to manage multiple online communities. We expect to have several hundred thousand users (about 100k per community), and each user will have associations to user-specific content on the community level.

At some point, we expect to have to export one or several communites into their own Datasource. This will be a downstream event that will not affect us in the immediate future.

In terms of administering the DB and each community, we're having trouble deciding between generating this DB in one inclusive datasource vs creating multiple datasources (one for each community). With that in mind, any advice or suggestions that anyone may have on this subject would be appreciated.

FYI -- We're running CF v4 and MSSQL v7.

Our concerns are as follows:

Data Structure Issues (what abilities/SQL functions will we lose when implementing multiple DB's vs one DB? We definitely have a need to be relational at every level of this application.)

DB Performance (will a one DB solution run more efficiently on MS SQL v7 with high traffic than several DB's?)

Administration (It's our understanding that multiple DB's will cause us to lose our ability to perform table joins, etc. Are there any other shortcomings that we should be aware of?)

Stability Issues (We've heard that one DB vs Multiple DB's will have fewer threads. We've also heard that MS SQL v7 becomes increasingly unstable as more threads get created. Is this true, or is our understanding of this issue wrong?)

CF Integration Issues (How will CF v4 react to handling a large amount of high-traffic DSN's vs. having one DSN and the same amount of traffic?)

Thanks in advance for all your help. We look forward to hearing from you.

Integration Services :: Import Multiple Files Into Multiple Tables Using SSIS

Jun 16, 2015

I have a requirement where in i have around 15 different flat files , filenames are fixed but folder path can be changed(i think i should use a variable for folder path). These 15 files data should go to their respective tables in the database.

Whether I need to create separate data flow task for each file or separate package? In addition to these, example : while importing product data into product table, if product ID already exists, we need to ignore it and upload only the new records.

One Receipt Number, Query Multiple Tables Gives Multiple Data.

Sep 8, 2006

I have just taken over the job of sorting out a rather poorly designed database. It looks like it was 'upsized' from an access database to the SQL server. The SQL server is the 2000 version.

Now I am trying to generate a report of what the students in the database are owing by referencing the Receipt table and then all the available payment methods and allocations. I was wondering if there was anyway to work out data being displayed twice (Let me demonstrate)

Note1: All the tables are linked by a key of ReceiptNo. From what I can see there is a table for every payment type and allocation but no link between the two other then the receipt number.

Using the query:
SELECT T_Receipt.ReceiptNo, T_cheque.Amount AS Chq_Amount, T_credit.Amount AS Cre_Amount, StandingOrder.Amount AS Stn_Amount,
T_BankTransfer.amount AS Bnk_Amount, T_cash.TotalAmount AS Cas_Amount, T_RentPayment.AmountPayed AS Ren_Paid,
T_AdminPayment.AmountPaid AS Adm_Paid, T_InternetBilling.Total AS Int_Paid, T_Utilities.AmountPaid AS Util_Amount,
T_InvoicePayment.amountPaid AS Inv_Paid, T_OtherPayments.paymentAmount AS Oth_Paid, T_parkingBill.paymentAmount AS Prk_Paid,
T_TelephoneBills.TelephoneCredit AS Tel_Paid, T_DepositPayment.[Deposit payment] AS Dep_Amount, T_Receipt.cancelled AS Canceled,
T_Receipt.RemittanceReceiptNo AS Rec_Ref, T_Receipt.Student
FROM T_Receipt INNER JOIN
T_DepositPayment ON T_Receipt.ReceiptNo = T_DepositPayment.receiptNo LEFT OUTER JOIN
T_RentPayment ON T_Receipt.ReceiptNo = T_RentPayment.RentPaymentNo LEFT OUTER JOIN
StandingOrder ON T_Receipt.ReceiptNo = StandingOrder.ReceiptNo LEFT OUTER JOIN
T_TelephoneBills ON T_Receipt.ReceiptNo = T_TelephoneBills.ReceiptNo LEFT OUTER JOIN
T_parkingBill ON T_Receipt.ReceiptNo = T_parkingBill.ReceiptNo LEFT OUTER JOIN
T_OtherPayments ON T_Receipt.ReceiptNo = T_OtherPayments.ReceiptNo LEFT OUTER JOIN
T_InvoicePayment ON T_Receipt.ReceiptNo = T_InvoicePayment.receiptNo LEFT OUTER JOIN
T_cash ON T_Receipt.ReceiptNo = T_cash.ReceiptNo LEFT OUTER JOIN
T_AdminPayment ON T_Receipt.ReceiptNo = T_AdminPayment.ReceiptNo LEFT OUTER JOIN
T_BankTransfer ON T_Receipt.ReceiptNo = T_BankTransfer.receiptNo LEFT OUTER JOIN
T_Utilities ON T_Receipt.ReceiptNo = T_Utilities.receiptNo LEFT OUTER JOIN
T_credit ON T_Receipt.ReceiptNo = T_credit.ReceiptNo LEFT OUTER JOIN
T_cheque ON T_Receipt.ReceiptNo = T_cheque.ReceiptNo LEFT OUTER JOIN
T_InternetBilling ON T_Receipt.ReceiptNo = T_InternetBilling.ReceiptNo
GROUP BY T_Receipt.Student, T_Receipt.ReceiptNo, T_cheque.Amount, T_credit.Amount, StandingOrder.Amount, T_BankTransfer.amount, T_cash.TotalAmount,
T_AdminPayment.AmountPaid, T_InternetBilling.Total, T_Utilities.AmountPaid, T_InvoicePayment.amountPaid, T_OtherPayments.paymentAmount,
T_parkingBill.paymentAmount, T_TelephoneBills.TelephoneCredit, T_Receipt.cancelled, T_Receipt.RemittanceReceiptNo,
T_DepositPayment.[Deposit payment], T_RentPayment.AmountPayed, T_Receipt.Student
HAVING (T_Receipt.Student LIKE N'06%')

Which gives a result of:

RecNo.
30429
Cheque
250
Deposit
250

30429
679.98
250

This is fine but when I do analysis on this it appears as though the student has paid two deposit payments. I was wondering with out querying each table independently from an application if there was a criteria to specify that I only get one deposit result.
So as such say, give me all the payments but I only want one result from the other tables. I though about discrete but that wouldn't work here.

Merging Data From Multiple Databases With Multiple Tables (all With The Same Structure)

Nov 15, 2006

Hi!

I have 7 source databases and one target database, all using the same structure. The structure is made of 10 tables, with foreign key constraints.

I need to merge the source databases into the target (which won't have any data before that process, but will already have the correct schema), and to keep the relationships between the records.

I know how to iterate over the source databases (with SMO foreach), but I'd like to know if someone can advise the best copy method for that context in SSIS ? (I don't want to keep the primary keys, but I need to keep the relationships...)

Any pointer most welcome!

best regards and thanks

Thibaut

Importing Multiple Flat Files To Multiple Tables In SSIS

Jun 27, 2006

I have a couple of hundred flat files to import into database tables using SSIS.

The files can be divided into groups by the format they use. I understand that I could import each group of files that have a common format at the same time using a Foreach Loop Container.

However, the example for the Foreach Loop Container has multiple files all being imported into the same database table. In my case, each file needs to be imported into a different database table.

Is it possible to import each set of files with the same format into different tables in a simple loop? I can't see a way to make a Data Flow Destination item accept its table name dynamically, which seems to prevent me doing this.

I suppose I could make a different Data Flow Destination item for each file, in the Data Flow. Would that be a reasonable solution, or is there a simpler solution, or should I just resign myself to making a separate Data Flow for every single file?
