DB Design Question: User Polls

I'm making a site with a series of polls on it so it'll ask the user a lot of questions and it'll have an area where they can vote on new questions that will be added later. If a question gets X number of votes, it gets added to the appropriate poll. I'd also like to tell them at the top of every page how many questions they have not answered (so they can tell how many new ones have been posted). Right now, I'm just designing the database though.
I assume each poll could be a table and each question a column (where I can use one of the column fields to hold the question itself - can you query column descriptions?). Then the users table could link with each of them. I could expand each table as new questions are voted in. But if the number of questions goes into the hundreds, will that be a problem (number of columns)?
Anyone done something like this before?

hi all(happy raksha bandhan day)we have one of Automation software for sales running for acustomer.He was cool for the first month of product, but later poppedwith adding some extra fields.no problems i added in database , put aseperate code in my application for that field.but later every 2 dayshe was adding new fields.....so i thought to put in some inbuilt logicuser defined fields.second his user defined fields are like shoudl benumeric,string , length validation.But do not know whats the best wayto acheive this.I mean should i make seperate table where i definefield name, data types , validation and then in my application code ageneral logic for it in my application code.Any one has prooven designfor user defined fields,just thinking if i can even get a idea.....When i die i die programming........

Hi all,
I'm a beginner to Report Services, and have tons of questions.
Here's the first one:
if the reports are created based on the condition that the user selects, how can I create the reports with Report Services?
For example,
the user can select the fields that will be shown on the reports, as well as the group fields, the sort fields and restrict fields. So I would not be able to pre-create all possible reports and deploy them to the report server, and I think I should create the reports dynamicly based on what the user select.
Could someone tell me how to do it (create and deploy the reports)?

My question takes two parts; firstly, is the new table that I'm proposing going to handle the business logic I describe below, and secondly, if I put the new table in, how in hell do I use it?

So. It's all about to get horribly, horribly complex (well, it is to me) so take a deep breath.
Tickets are subject to quotas. However, quotas are subject to... well, at the moment they can be based on event, stand, admission date, concession, or any combination of these. They can also be based on an individual ticket. All quotas, however, are annual; they only apply to ticket purchases in the same year. For example:
- you can't buy more than 4 tickets for date A, in stand B at event C, per year.
- you can't buy more than 2 tickets for stand D per year.
- you can't buy more than 4 of ticket number 123.
Now, I'm thinking that all I need to manage this is one table, and it's going to look a little like this:

So, if I put a record in there with an event, stand and admission date - and a quota - then I've met the first business rule that I described above. If I put in a record with just a stand id and a quota, then I've met the second sort. If I put in one with just a ticket id and a quota, then I've met the third.
Now we return to that big SQL statement above. The one that says "get me all eligible tickets that match these parameters". And it's got to get a lot bigger because I now need to not only join in tblQuotas, to see if any quotas apply to the ticket I've chosen (or to the event, stand, etc that make it up), but I've also got to join in tblBasket, and tblOrders, and tblUsers, to find out how much of any particular quota they've already used up in previous orders. Although that's only orders placed in the current year, mind. And of course I also now haveto pass the users ID in as a parameter so I can look up their order history.

So... this is where I've got to:

What I want to do is incorporate that into the big SQL query up top, in such a way to make it only return tickets that not only match the ticket parameters but that also aren't linked to stands, admission dates or anything else, that the user has reached their quota on.
Oh, and I'm in a bit of a hurry so do try and get a move on won't you? ;)
But seriously - how do I put those two SQL querys together? Do I need one for each paramater that might have a quota attached, or is there a quicker way? All suggestions and advice, up to and including "get an easier job, dude", received gratefully :)

Error: Cannot find either column "iFile" or the user-defined function or aggregate "iFile.Pathname", or the name is ambiguous.
Do I need to run a procedure?

This is my first time to deploy an asp.net2 web site. Everything is working fine on my local computer but when i published the web site on a remote computer i get the error "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path. Please make sure the user has a local user profile on the computer. The connection will be closed" (only in pages that try to access the database)

We are in the early stages of developing a small project and I have a question I would like an opinion on.
When deciding how to design a table to store information on users who will be different types.
The project involves setting up webpage that allow " appointment setters" to book demos for our Sales reps. We want to keep track of how many each appointment setter books.
I have a user table with user_id, fname,lname, type. Where type represents the type of users they will be either "appointment setter" or "Sales Rep".
In the Appointment table I would like to store the Appoinment setter ID, sales rep Id, date/time appointment was booked and some other data on the appointment.
My question is how do I set up the relationship from the appointment table back to the user table.
Since each record in the appointment table will have a App Setter ID and a Sales Rep ID.
Should I just pick either the app setter id or the sales rep id as the foreign key back to the userID in the user table. Or is there another method how to handle this.
Any thoughts or articles would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, I'm doing a football database for fixtures and stuff. The problem I am having is that in a fixture, there is both a home, and an away team. The tables as a result are something like this:

It's not exactly like that, but you get the point. The question is, can I do a fixture query which results in one record per fixture, showing both teams details. The first in a hometeam field and the second in an away team field.
Fixture contains the details about the fixture like date and fixture id and has it been played
Team contains team info like team id, name, associated graphic
TeamFixture is the table which links the fixture to it's home and away team.
TeamFixture exists to prevent a many to many type relationship.
Make sense? Sorry if this turns out to be really easy, just can't get my head around it at the mo!

I would like to create a table called product. My objective is to get list of packages available for each product in data grid view column while selecting each product. Each product may have different packages type (eg:- Nos, CTN, OTR etc). Some product may have two packages and some for 3 packages etc. Quantity in each packages also may be differ ( for eg:- for some CTN may contain 12 nos or in other case 8 nos etc). When I am in Visual Studio 2005, and I try to add an SQL database, I get the following error "generating user instances in sql server is disabled. use sp_configure user instances enabled to generate user instances." i'm using the Enterpirse library logger to write logs into a database.
When choosing connection string i choose the database i want in the "connection properties" dialog box and
push 'Test connection' button.
everything goes well.
then i open the SQL Server Management studio express and connect to the databse to check some things,
from that point on , when i push the 'Test Connection' button in the Enterprise library i get the error:
"cannot open user default database. Login failed. login failed for user My'server/MyuserName'"
even when i close the sql server manager , it is still stuck - the connection test doesn't work anymore....
it only work when i restart the computer.
why ?

I would like to know if there is a way to find out who changed a users roles/access WITHOUT using the audit function. For example, if a user account was created and given SA access then changed to read only, how can I find out who made that change? I tried searching for an answer, but kept getting no results. I'm thinking this may tie into the sys.sysusers view?

Hi,
I have several reports for users to view on our Intranet. After installation of SQL 2005 SP2 patch, I cannot delete user or user's authority from Report in Properties Tab. An error message was shown on the status bar. It indicated that JavaScript Error: 'Return' statement outside of function. Seems something wrong with the 'Delete' funciton in SQL 2005 after update. The other functions worked fine. Could you point me out how to fix it or need to install any updates / hotfix. Thanks a lot!

Hi, I'm new to SQL Express 2005.
I found information regarding : "Cannot open user default database. Login failed."on this forum but I think that in my case it's a bit different issue.
I have a website (ASP.NET 2.0) accessing DB, in the mean time Windows Service tries to update some data in the same DB (Service runs as NT AUTHORITYLOCAL SYSTEM). The second connection is rejected: "Cannot open user default database. Login failed.Login failed for user ....".
Problem occurs only when both: service and website are running at the same time. So service and website are running without problems when they are connecting DB exclusively.
My connection string is:
"Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename="|DataDirectory|spider-lab.mdf";Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"
I would be grateful if you can help me

I have a copy of VS2005 and i have installed the Microsoft SQL Server Developer Edition
I am trying to do my first connection using ASP.net (yay for me...) and it has failed...with this error..Login failed for user 'testuser'. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
can someone please point out why? yes i know that the error seems pretty straight forward but how do i fix it? like how do i make the user a trusted server connection? where do i do it? and what are the steps? the user is an administrator and by rights should have all access to everything....

All the research I found dealing with this problem is that the solution is to set SQLserver to mix mode. I have SQL server already set to mix mode. I am not sure what else to do. Has anybody run into this problem?

Our server has integrated security setup, upon startup of the server,
we have a continuous flow of error msg:
Login Failed: Reason: User '_' not defined as a valid user of trusted
connection.
The timing of these messages only around 30 seconds apart
The only incident from Technet I can find is Q186314, but we don't have replication setup, anyone knows where I can look into ?
I recycle the server but didn't help.

I am relatively new to sql developer. There is a new user that just joined our organization. I am trying to grant him the same direct grants privilege to the tables that an existing user has. The existing user has a ton of direct table access privileges and it will take days if I had to do each grant one by one like: grant select,insert,delete,update on 'table name' to 'user id'. Is there a way of copying or inserting an existing user's privilege and granting it to a new user.

I have an SSIS package built by another developer, and now that I'm running it under my login the passwords won't save. The solution and packages are setup with ProtectionLevel EncryptSensitiveWithUserKey, but how do I get the User Key to reset so I can now save passwords? I can re-enter them, but whenever I enter hte password and test it then click OK it still has the red arrow next to the connection as if there's an error. I can create new connections and those passwords save fine, but with 40-50 items in this package I hate the thought of having to go into each and change the connection.
I tried changing the package and solution to DontSaveSensitive then rebuilding and closing then reopening, I hoped there was some option to reset the User Key just as if I created the solution. If this option doesn't exist why?

I'm using the RTM version of Visual Studion 2008 and SQLServer Express.
Logged in as an administrator, I can create a connection to an mdf file and all is well.
As a normal user, attempting to create a connection gives the message "sqlservr.exe has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
I have tried this with UAC turned on and turned off. The result is the same. In Services I can see that SQLEXPRESS is running, but each time I try to connect, I get the "stopped working" message.
For existing database programs that have the .mdf file stored in the project folder, I can run the program in the VS IDE on my XP machine and on my Vista machine as administrator, but not as a normal user.
I'm not looking for a workaround to make this work once, but the cause and solution to the problem. This is for an introductory VB textbook and we must be able to move a database program from one machine to another and make it work. Everything I have read says that SQLExpress should be able to do that.
Can anyone help me with this?

Hello,
I am trying to migrate reporting services from SQL server 2000 to SQL 2005. I followed the migration steps listed in one of the TechNet documents. Installed SQL 2005 and SP2.
Backed up existing SQL 2000 databases and restored on SQL 2005.
Went to Configuration tool and then to the Database setup. Connected to SQL 2005.
Clicked on the Upgrade button. The upgrade fails and I always get the following errors:
"The database version (C.0.6.54) does not match your reporting services installation. You must upgrade your Reporting services database"
Then I get this exception:

My goal is to write a DR plan where i am restoring all user databases onto a diffrent server in a event of hardware failure. I was trying to figure out a way to extract DDL of user accounts and their permissions on all user databases so i can simplify my DR documentation.
This is the plan I came up with...to restore all system and user dbs on a different Physical SQLServer.
1. build named instance $PROD
2. restore master database
- startup sqlserver in single user mode -m or DAC sqlcmd -S ServerName -U sa -P<xxx> –A
net stop MSSQLSERVER$PROD
net start MSSQLSERVER$PROD -m
- restore database master from disk e:master.bak with replace;
3. start sqlserver normally
4. stop SQLServer agent
5. restore msdb
-restore database msdb disk e:msdb.bak with replace;
6. restart SQLServer
7. Restore User Databases.
8. Run Sp_change_users_login for all users
-Sp_Change_users_logins 'auto_fix','username'

Hi all,
I was wondering whether there is a way to show the user an error when the user did not select a specific parameter.
In my case, I have two optional parameters. The user has to select either one to view the report. If the user does not select either one, I would like to show some sort of an error page indicating so. However, all i am getting is a complete blank with no report in sight. I as a developer know this is an error as a result of missing parameters, but i was wondering whether I could produce a page or direct it to a page so that the user doesn't go all horrified at an empty page ?

Hi All,
We have setup a SCOM 2007 Server and in this we have SQL 2005 SP2, We are using two accounts one for OPRATIONAL DATABASE and another one for REPORTING DATABASE after this setup everything was working fine but suddenly my SDK account which is for REPROTING DATABASE was locked by entering wrong password and afterwards I unlocked the password but SINCE this i'm not able to connect to my REPORTING DATABASE and i'm getting following ERROR:- Login Failed for user 'username'. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
Taken following action to rectify this problem:
1) Resetting the SDK password with the same password.
2) Restarted all the SQL and SCOM services.
3) Restarted the Server as well.
4) Converted from WINDOWS AUTHENTICATION mode to MIXED mode.
But the problem is still persisting, Please help ASAP.
