DB Design :: How To Create READ ONLY Database In Server
Oct 6, 2015
Is it possible to create a database which design or data is not needed to update and i want to set to it as a READ ONLY. what are the steps to create such type of database?
We have a production 2012 R2 SQL server that is not part of a domain. I have a database called CSSDC. I need to backup this database and make the BAK file available to a user on a different SQL server. Security is a concern. In order for this user to restore the database, they will have to be in the fixed server role sysadmins. I know I am going to have to use the Move with replace for the filegroups for the restore. Once the database is restored it will have to be altered to read-only. I would also like to remove the existing security and only have this new user access the read-only database.
Is it possible to create diagram from existing database? Need to understand the schema of database which has no documentation. So would like to create diagram for that database.
I have two database files, one .mdf and one .ndf. The creator of these files has marked them readonly. I want to "attach" these files to a new database, but cannot do so because they are read-only. I get this message:
Server: Msg 3415, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 Database 'TestSprintLD2' is read-only or has read-only files and must be made writable before it can be upgraded.
What command(s) are needed to make these files read_write?
i have a database which get refreshed every day from client's data . and we need to pull heavy data from them every day as reports . so only selects happens on that database.
we do daily population of some table in some other databases from this daily refreshed DB.
will read uncommitted or NOLOCK with select queries to retrieve data faster.
there will be no dirty read as there are NO DML operation in that database so for SELECT which happens concurrently on these tables , will NOLOCK work?

I'm in a project to replicate a database from the production environment to another sql server.
The idea is use it for some biggest querys because in the production database we had experimenting various problems. What is the best way for do it? Transactional replication? Log Shipping? I'm reading absolutely everything but I can not get decide.
Both servers are SQL Server 2008 R2 and they are in the same LAN.
Database 'C:INETPUBDEMO.TRUTHSTONE.COMAPP_DATAASPNETDB.MDF' cannot be upgraded because it is read-only or has read-only files. Make the database or files writeable, and rerun recovery.Cannot open user default database. Login failed.Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'. Hi, Strange one. I have copied my working web-site to the production server and get this message. Tried copying new set of database files and reset the server to ensure no applications could be accessing the database files. Still get the same error. Works fine on my Visual Studio VWD Express version.
Mitch PS I am not trying to upgrade the database, just use it!
i'm an sql server beginer. i was wondering if some of you guys can help me out. i need for the sql server to be able to read an outside file (just text) and be able to run a script that will insert it in the database. it's a dcc output file. we've tried running this script:
DROP TABLE tests go DECLARE @SQLSTR varchar(255) SELECT @SQLSTR = 'ISQL -E -Q"dbcc checkdb(master)"' CREATE TABLE tests (Results varchar(255) NOT NULL) INSERT INTO tests EXEC('master..xp_cmdshell ''ISQL -E -Q"dbcc checkdb(master)"''')
and it's running good but the problem is the results of the dbcc here did not come from a file but directly after executing the dcc command. is there a way to do it?

So what fields i need to take in a database table so that when i search based on week /month/quarter/year i get different resultsets.
Hello, We have SQL Server 2005 with 300+ databases in it. It was set up by the conractor. How can I create new account with read-only access to all databases? Is there any "quick" method of doing it (like in Sybase, it is very easy). I've created new login, but I do not see where can I set up the permissions properly. Thanks
it is used in an web application that seraches for all the rest of the information using an orderid and displays the rest of the details the size of the table currently is about 123000 records that is increasing by 20000 every week.
i have an archive of the same data that has 7,666,000 records that are also going to be placed into the same database.
my question is is that a good idea of doing this? are there any performance issues that i need to be aware of as currently the application runs quite quick?
OBJECTIVE: I would like to read a text file from SQL Server 2000, read the text file content, and load its conntents in a RichTextBoxTHINGS I'VE DONE AND HAVE WORKING:1) I've successfully load a text file (ex: textFile.txt) in sql server database table column (with datatype Image) 2) I've also able to load the file using a Handler as below: using System;using System.Web;using System.Data.SqlClient;public class HandlerImage : IHttpHandler {string connectionString;public void ProcessRequest (HttpContext context) {connectionString = System.Configuration.ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["NWS_ScheduleSQL2000"].ConnectionString;int ImageID = Convert.ToInt32(context.Request.QueryString["id"]);SqlConnection myConnection = new SqlConnection(connectionString);string Command = "SELECT [Image], Image_Type FROM Images WHERE Image_Id=@Image_Id";SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand(Command, myConnection);cmd.Parameters.Add("@Image_Id", System.Data.SqlDbType.Int).Value = ImageID;SqlDataReader dr;myConnection.Open(); cmd.Prepare(); dr = cmd.ExecuteReader();if (dr.Read()){ //WRITE IMAGE TO THE BROWSERcontext.Response.ContentType = dr["Image_Type"].ToString();context.Response.BinaryWrite((byte[])dr["Image"]);}myConnection.Close();}public bool IsReusable {get {return false;}}}'>'> <a href='<%# "HandlerDocument.ashx?id=" + Eval("Doc_ID") %>'>File </a>- Click on this link, I'll be able to download or view the file WHAT I WANT TO DO, BUT HAVE PROBLEM:- I would like to be able to read CONTENT of this file and load it in a string as belowStreamReader SR = new StreamReader()SR = File.Open("File.txt");String contentText = SR.Readline();txtBox.text = contentText;BUT THIS ONLY WORK FOR files in the server.I would like to be able to read FILE CONTENTS from SQL Server.PLEASE HELP. I really appreciate it.
We installed SP1 for SQL Server 2014 this past weekend and got this error message in the logs. I found that if you set the db to read-write, it updates the system objects, even after SP1 has completed. Then you can set it back to read-only. I'm just posting this so other people can find it on the internet, as I wasn't able to find it specifically.
Error Log Entry:System objects could not be updated in database 'x' because it is read-only.
Problem: After installing SP1 for SQL Server 2014 you will find this message in the error logs saying read-only databases could not be updated.
Solution: Simply set the db to read-write and the system objects will get updated, long after SP1 was installed.
ALTER DATABASE [x] SET READ_WRITE WITH NO_WAIT
Then set it back to read-only:
ALTER DATABASE [x] SET READ_ONLY WITH NO_WAIT
You should then see these log entries:
System objects could not be updated in database 'x' because it is read-only. Setting database option READ_WRITE to ON for database 'x'. Starting up database 'x'. CHECKDB for database 'x' finished without errors on 2015-07-25 01:02:28.143 (local time). This is an informational message only; no user action is required. Synchronize Database 'x' (129) with Resource Database. Setting database option READ_ONLY to ON for database 'x'. Starting up database 'x'. CHECKDB for database 'x' finished without errors on 2015-07-25 01:02:29.888 (local time). This is an informational message only; no user action is required.
In a stored procedure, I am trying to create a table and then read it from within that SP or from another one (nestsed). When I run the below code (simplified version of my real SP), no records are returned even though I know that there is data. The table is created and records are inserted, I just cannot read the records from the SP or one that calls it with an EXEC.
Any ideas? My code is listed below. (When I get this to work, I plan to convert the code to manipulate a temporaty table).
Alter Procedure spWod_rptWoStatusSummary_9
As BEGIN CREATE TABLE tblStatusSummary (TckStaffCd_F Char(3), RecType Char(20)) INSERT INTO tblStatusSummary SELECT TckStaffCd_F, RecType END
I need to create a new login with SELECT rights so the users can view all tables with no UPDATE, DELETE, OR INSERT rights. But this user needs to be able to CREATE VIEWS. I have assigned the user to the Public role and gone in and modified Securables for the Database to be able to CREATE VIEW. When I connect using my new user and try to create a view, I get the error message: CREATE VIEW permissions denied in database 'test01'.
In our application we are copying data between 2 sqlserver databases using linked server. Say, sqlserver1 is source and sqlserver2 is destination, then, our application will be on sqlserver2 box and will copy data from sqlserver1 to sqlserver2.
User also need to choose from which database of sqlserver1, the data need to be copied. This data is our application data.. Nothing related to sqlserver database.
We are using the following query, to get the database names of the source sqlserver..
SELECT * FROM <linked server to dest db>.master.sys.databases
My questions is : is this query generic enough that works on all sqlserver versions?
Is the master database name of sqlserver configurable or its alwasys fixed as "master"?
Ok, I'm doing a football database for fixtures and stuff. The problem I am having is that in a fixture, there is both a home, and an away team. The tables as a result are something like this:
It's not exactly like that, but you get the point. The question is, can I do a fixture query which results in one record per fixture, showing both teams details. The first in a hometeam field and the second in an away team field.
Fixture contains the details about the fixture like date and fixture id and has it been played
Team contains team info like team id, name, associated graphic
TeamFixture is the table which links the fixture to it's home and away team.
TeamFixture exists to prevent a many to many type relationship.
Make sense? Sorry if this turns out to be really easy, just can't get my head around it at the mo!
Agent State Exposure Insured Name Rogers Inc MA 100,000 John Smith SAN Group RI 200,000 Jim Morrison SAN Group RI 100,000 Jimi Hendrix 123 Agency MA 300,000 Mickey Mouse Rogers Inc MA 50,000 Mike Greenwell
I want to be able to read the file and create new excel files for each Agent listed. So for Example, the above file would create 3 separate files since there are 3 different Agents listed. Each Agent file would contain the same information from the original file. The name of the file would be somethign like AgentName.xls...So the SAN group file would have this:
Agent State Exposure Insured Name Rogers Inc MA 100,000 John Smith SAN Group RI 200,000 Jim Morrison SAN Group RI 100,000 Jimi Hendrix
I'm using SSIS to do bulk inserts from fixed width files to about 20 tables in my SQL database.
The problem I'm running into is in creating Format Files for the bulk insert task to use. I've gotten the bcp command to create format files that will read csv files, but I can't seem to figure out how to get it to create one for fixed-width.
I know it can be done: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms191234.aspx At the bottom (Section F) it shows an XML format file for reading a fixed-width file. When I manually create one of these to match one of my tables, the bulk insert worked fine.
Closest I've come is with this ( [] bracketed items are correct values, just censored here): C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server90ToolsBinn>bcp [database].[owner].[table] format nul -c -f C:TableFMT.xml -x -S[Server] -U[Username] -P[Password]
My question is, what is the bcp command to create this sort of XML format file?
I have table which having clustered index based on column (A,B,C,D,E,F).Now my query based on B,D,F. e.g: where b='Test1' and D='test2' and F='test3' Now Execution plan ask to create non clustered index with (B,D,F) column.is it make any sense to create non clustered index where clustered already available.
I am working on Visual Web Developer Express Edition 2005. When I right click on database explorer to create an SQL server database then I always find the option " Create New SQL Server database " Disabled.
Can any one tell me how to enable that option please ?
I want to change the work table name to work_version2 and later drop the work table. First, I created the table (work_version2) along with the data structure seen below and later inserted data from the work table. As I tried to make workID a surrogate key in work_version2 using SSMS, I got the below error message when I try to save the changes. Is there a way to do this?
Saving changes is not permitted. The changes you have make requires the following tables to be dropped and re-created. You have either make changes to a table that cant't be recreated or enabled the option that prevent saving changes that requires the table to be recreated. Work_version2.
CREATE TABLE WORK( WorkID Int NOT NULL IDENTITY (500,1), Title Char(35) NOT NULL, Copy Char(12) NOT
