I am new to using SQL Server but will be having to get to know it at work and have downloaded SQL Server 2005 Express to tinker with at home.
What are the easiest methods to set up a relational database?
Are there any tools you can download to give SQL Server or the express version functionality similar to Access?
Can you get a tool to allow you to not only design tables in design view but then go on to create relationships and a database model?
Please excuse my ignorance if this is possible already, can anyone provide any links to getting started links?
There seems to be plenty out there about writing queries and stored procedures etc. but I haven't found as much about setting up a database from scratch.
Thanks in advance,
JJJ.

I want to control the size of ldf files and mdf files of several databases on SQL Server 2008 in my organization (manual increase), but i have a question:
What would be the best practices (best methods) for provisioning a ldf file and mdf file? Exists any generic formula?
With this i want to avoid the shrink operation and the autogrow of sql server databases...

Hi,
We are developing products to target thousands of clients.
Front-End : C#.Net 2005
Back-End : SQL-Server 2005
We started an Inventry control project (Product) with 10% percent of data as we didn't meet any clients (User requirements). I mean, I could not get complete user requirements. version by version, I need to change the database dynamically, and it should support backward compatiblity. While altering the database the existing primary keys are affecting. It seems I need to complete reconstruction of data Layer, Business Layer and Presentation Layer. How to avoid reconstructions in such scenerios? How database designers designing databases for a product like this? Or should I need to create "Table_Name_Serial_Number" (identity data type) column for each table and column to be primary key of that table?. Please help me!
Thanks in advance,
R. Pandiarajan.

I have a view where I am joining two very large tables.
I am joining where Brand and then Product match.
My problem is that there are quite a few rows where there is a Brand and Product in Table A but it is not in Table B and the other way around, Products in B that aren't in A and I need ALL of the products to show, not just the ones that are in both tables.
The field names are the same in each table, one is North America and the other is Europe. HOW do I write that?
SELECT
dbo.SummaryNA.Brand,
dbo.SummaryNA.Product,
dbo.SummaryEU.Brand AS Expr1,
dbo.SummaryEU.Product AS Expr2,
dbo.SummaryNA.Supplier,

I have table 'stores' that has 3 columns (storeid, article, doc), I have a second table 'allstores' that has 3 columns(storeid(always 'ALL'), article, doc). The stores table's storeid column will have a stores id, then will have multiple articles, and docs. The 'allstores' table will have 'all' in the store for every article and doc combination. This table is like the master lookup table for all possible article and doc combinations. The 'stores' table will have the actual article and doc per storeid.
What I am wanting to pull is all article, doc combinations that exist in the 'allstores' table, but do not exist in the 'stores' table, per storeid. So if the article/doc combination exists in the 'allstores' table and in the 'stores' table for storeid of 50 does not use that combination, but store 51 does, I want the output of storeid 50, and what combination does not exist for that storeid. I will try this example:
'allstores' 'Stores'
storeid doc article storeid doc article
ALL 0010 001 101 0010 001
ALL 0010 002 101 0010 002
ALL 0011 001 102 0011 002
ALL 0011 002
So I want the query to pull the one from 'allstores' that does not exist in 'stores' which in this case would the 3rd record "ALL 0011 001".

We are planning to move all of our System Center Databases that reside on front end servers to each system center application to a centrally located SQL 2012 server. We'd like to centralize everything and have our DBA care for the server. here is our setup:
SCOM has 1 monitoring and 1 Data warehouse server. SCCM has 1 server with all roles on it. DPM database is on the same server as Application. Same with SCVMM. I have 2 questions regarding this move:
1. Can I have all these databases running on 1 SQL instance?
2. Is there a best practice document that highlights steps and "gotchyas"

I'm trying to do a simple alteration to the table design of one of ourSQL 2k tables, simply changing an identity row so that its not 'notfor replication', and its taking absolutely ages to do so, and stopsthe sql server from working.Whilst it's attempting the update, no one can access the database, thesqlservr.exe memory usage shoots up and enterprise manager reports anot responding status. Eventually after about 10 minutes, it bombs outreporting,Unable to modify tableCould not allocate space for object 'Tmp_TableName' in database'DBNAME' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full. The table i'm attempting to change has only about 4000 records sothere's not a huge amount of data.Any ideas what's causing this and how i can get around it?A similar thing happens when i attempt to change the length of avarchar too. Thanks in advance for any suggestionsDan Williams.

My environment:XP Home, VWD, SQLEXPRESS.A purely local setting, no network, no remote servers.
I try to do a JOIN query between tables in the membership ASPNETDB.mdf and one table in a self created 3L_Daten.mdf.
After dragging the tables into the Query Design window and connecting them VWD creates this query (here I added the control declaration):
<asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:ConnectionStringAspNetDB %>" SelectCommand="SELECT aspnet_Users.UserName, aspnet_Membership.Password, aspnet_Membership.Email, aspnet_Membership.PasswordQuestion, aspnet_Membership.PasswordAnswer, aspnet_Membership.CreateDate, aspnet_Membership.LastLoginDate, aspnet_Roles.RoleName, [D:VISUAL STUDIO 2005WEBSITES3L_V1APP_DATA3L_DATEN.MDF].dbo.Personendaten.Age, [D:VISUAL STUDIO 2005WEBSITES3L_V1APP_DATA3L_DATEN.MDF].dbo.Personendaten.Sex, [D:VISUAL STUDIO 2005WEBSITES3L_V1APP_DATA3L_DATEN.MDF].dbo.Personendaten.Area FROM [D:VISUAL STUDIO 2005WEBSITES3L_V1APP_DATA3L_DATEN.MDF].dbo.Personendaten INNER JOIN aspnet_Users ON [D:VISUAL STUDIO 2005WEBSITES3L_V1APP_DATA3L_DATEN.MDF].dbo.Personendaten.User_ID = aspnet_Users.UserId LEFT OUTER JOIN aspnet_Roles INNER JOIN aspnet_UsersInRoles ON aspnet_Roles.RoleId = aspnet_UsersInRoles.RoleId ON aspnet_Users.UserId = aspnet_UsersInRoles.UserId LEFT OUTER JOIN aspnet_Membership ON aspnet_Users.UserId = aspnet_Membership.UserId"></asp:SqlDataSource>
THIS WORKS, BUT:
As you can see the database 3L_Daten.mdf is inserted with its full path, which is not feasible for deployment reasons.
My question: How can I address both databases purely by their database names ? Both have been created within VWD and lie under App_Data.
(I tried almost everything, I practiced with the SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express Edition, I tried linked servers, all without success).
Thank you for your consideration.

I'm in the process of building messaging functionality in to my application where by users can contact one another, look at it as a dating site, you click on someones profile, view their profile and then send that user a message.
I started to build the table which looked like this:
Id (PK) (Increments by 1)
ToUserId (FK) -- User who they're getting in contact with
FromUserId (FK) -- User who sent the message
Content (nvarchar(3000)) -- Message being send
Status (int) -- read / new / deleted / sent
EmailDate (datetime)
EmailDeleted (datetime)
But the problem with this setup is both user's maybe sending / replying to each other so I would have multiple entries / statuses in one table which may become a nightmare to manage / control.

Hi,
I want to get the results of a query between 2 tables that exist in the same server but in 2 different databases. I want this query to be executed in a stored procedure (use the reults in a cursor), or if it's possible to be used in an ado dataset or a simple dataset in Delphi. Can this be done also if the two datases (MSSQL) exist in different servers??
Can anyone show an example of how to accomplish these tasks??
Best Regards,

I have a problem in that a database I have created required splitting into three databases. The records were similar but reporting and maintenance differed enough that splitting the data seemed the best option. So now I have three databases that are needing to be updated from one file and I am not sure how to do that. See the illustration below. The Machine table is a one to many to the Job table, the Job table is a one to one with the Run Data.
The first idea was to query the first database if the record was not found go to the next. If no match was found in any table drop it in a reject bucket. Then what about perhaps a lookup table with starting and ending Job ranges. I would query it to find the correct database then do another query to update the record. But then I could have some type of joining table. Not sure how that would look across databases.
The tables I am updating or adding new records to has the same fields, unique key across all the databases. I could make one big table which gets rid of the query to find the correct database to update but I still would have to connect this back to the Job table which brings me back to a join table or index table.

A customer has messed up while moving their databases. After working for a week they found that data is missing in the database.I have two backups, one from the old server and one from the new server today, they have been working in the new one for a week.
I need to compare these two databases and then update the new database with all data that is in the old one but not in the new database. Join the data in the two databases so to say. Both databases are from the same application so they use the same users, schema and so on.

Hello EveryoneWe have a third party tool which maintains its own customdatabase,DB1 on SQL Server 2000 on Server A (Windows 2000). We built aninhouse application which maintains a transactional database, DB2 alsoon Server A derived from DB1. Since the DB1 is frequently updated thesynchronisation between the databases is currently maintained by usingviews in DB2 which pulls in all the required data from across tables inDB1.But we found that the cost of employing views, referencing tablesacross databases has made the inhouse application slower and so as aapparent performance tuning measure we plan to maintain a subset ofdata(for a specific time period) from DB1 in actual tables with sameschema in our transactional database DB2. But since the tables in DB1are frequently updated during the day we are required to thesynchronise the corresponding tables in DB2 with their counterparts inDB1. The only constraint in this synchronization being that the thirdparty custom database,DB1 cannot not be subjected to any changes (likecreation of triggers) as it is maintained by a different group ofpersonnel.I read about Triggers,Maintenance Jobs and Replication but not surewhich would suffice our needs. Are there any recommendations on how thiscould be carried out? Any suggestion would be welcome.Thankschandra

When I'm designing a merge join in BIDs, in particular a large one with say a couple hundred columns on the left part of the join (and only 1-2 columns on the right side), it takes 2-3 minutes to close and I notice it pegs the CPU on the computer during that time. I'm developing on a quad dual core 64 bit machine with 32 Gb of RAM.
What makes this problematic is if you have a several merge joins in the pipe, and you do something like add a column. Then you have to re-open every merge join to include that column, waiting 2-3 minutes for it to close. So adding a column to a pipe with 10 merger joins will take 20-30 minutes, most of which is just waiting for edit boxes to close. I've tried the options of "work offline" and setting the ValidateExternalData to false in the merge join property but those don't help. Anyone encounter this problem?
Thanks,
Lee

I was writing a query using both left outer join and inner join. And the query was ....
SELECT
       S.companyname AS supplier, S.country,P.productid, P.productname, P.unitprice,C.categoryname
FROM
Production.Suppliers AS S LEFT OUTER JOIN
      (Production.Products AS P
        INNER JOIN Production.Categories AS C
[code]....
However ,the result that i got was correct. But when i did the same query using the left outer join in both the cases
i.e..
SELECT
       S.companyname AS supplier, S.country,P.productid, P.productname, P.unitprice,C.categoryname
FROM
Production.Suppliers AS S LEFT OUTER JOIN
(Production.Products AS P
LEFT OUTER JOIN Production.Categories AS C
ON C.categoryid = P.categoryid)
ON
S.supplierid = P.supplierid
WHERE
S.country = N'Japan';
The result i got was same,i.e
supplier   country   productid   productname   unitprice   categorynameSupplier QOVFD   Japan   9   Product AOZBW   97.00   Meat/PoultrySupplier QOVFD   Japan  10   Product YHXGE   31.00   SeafoodSupplier QOVFD   Japan  74   Product BKAZJ   10.00   ProduceSupplier QWUSF   Japan   13   Product POXFU   6.00   SeafoodSupplier QWUSF   Japan   14   Product PWCJB   23.25   ProduceSupplier QWUSF   Japan   15   Product KSZOI   15.50   CondimentsSupplier XYZ   Japan   NULL   NULL   NULL   NULLSupplier XYZ   Japan   NULL   NULL   NULL   NULL
and this time also i got the same result. My question is that is there any specific reason to use inner join when join the third table and not the left outer join.

We have two databases with same schema and tables (same table names, basically main DB and a copy of the main DB). following is example of table names from 2 DBs.
CREATE TABLE #SourceDatabase (SourceColumn1 VARCHAR(50))
INSERT INTO #SourceDatabase VALUES('TABLE1') , ('TABLE2'),('TABLE3') , ('TABLE4'),('TABLE5') , ('TABLE6')
SELECT * FROM #SourceDatabase
DROP TABLE #SourceDatabase
CREATE TABLE #ArchiveDatabase (SourceColumn2 VARCHAR(50))
INSERT INTO #ArchiveDatabase VALUES('TABLE1') , ('TABLE2'),('TABLE3') , ('TABLE4'),('TABLE5') , ('TABLE6')
SELECT * FROM #ArchiveDatabase
DROP TABLE #ArchiveDatabase
We need a T_SQL statement that can create one view for each table from both the databases(assuming both databases have same number of tables and same table names). so that we can run the T_SQL on a thrid database and the third DB has all the views (one view for each table from the 2 DBs). and the name of the view should be same as the tables name. and all 3 DBs are on the same server.
the 2 temp tables are just examples, DBs have around 1700 tables each. so we ned something like following for each table.
CREATE VIEW DBO.TABLE1 AS SELECT * FROM [SourceDatabase].[dbo].[TABLE1] UNION ALL SELECT * FROM [ArchiveDatabase].[dbo].[TABLE1]
CREATE VIEW DBO.TABLE2 AS SELECT * FROM [SourceDatabase].[dbo].[TABLE2] UNION ALL SELECT * FROM [ArchiveDatabase].[dbo].[TABLE2]
CREATE VIEW DBO.TABLE3 AS SELECT * FROM [SourceDatabase].[dbo].[TABLE3] UNION ALL SELECT * FROM [ArchiveDatabase].[dbo].[TABLE3]
CREATE VIEW DBO.TABLE4 AS SELECT * FROM [SourceDatabase].[dbo].[TABLE4] UNION ALL SELECT * FROM [ArchiveDatabase].[dbo].[TABLE4]
CREATE VIEW DBO.TABLE5 AS SELECT * FROM [SourceDatabase].[dbo].[TABLE5] UNION ALL SELECT * FROM [ArchiveDatabase].[dbo].[TABLE5]
CREATE VIEW DBO.TABLE6 AS SELECT * FROM [SourceDatabase].[dbo].[TABLE6] UNION ALL SELECT * FROM [ArchiveDatabase].[dbo].[TABLE6]

Good morning all,
I need to create a new table on a SQL Server 2005 Database, but the data needed for the table is kept in different databases on different servers.
Half the data is on the SQL 2005 database, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem, but the other half is on a SQL Express database on a different server, is it possible to write a T-SQL query to retrieve this data on the other server?
Normally I use a create table + insert into kind of query to create custom tables but I don't know how to connect to the SQL Express server/database using T-SQL (if it's possible at all?) to do this.
Any tips, hints, ideas very welcome. Please use small words and short sentences.
Thanks,
Paul
