DB Engine :: Can Move DLL Through A Connection And Put It On Server?
Oct 21, 2015
Our application installs requiring several SQL servers. Some of the SQL Servers need CLR dlls to be installed. We would like to not run the installer apps on the SQL server machines. Is there any way to use the SQL server connection to install the DLLs?
These dlls are the only reason to run the installer apps on the SQL server machines. To do this would simplify daily installation in all of the various build and test environments.
This would be preferable to using mapped drives etc.

Preface, I am just starting to learn about database and web development.
I installed VS.net 2005 which updated my web site project file and automatically attached it to a database. It connected to ".app_dataaspnetdb.mdf". However it messed something up and the connection didn't work. If I create a project from scratch, it connects to its DB just fine, but not my upgraded project.
However, when I publish my web site, I need to use ODBC. So, my thought was to simply set up the system locally in a way that will make it easy to connect on the web site. I was told to add a system DSN to the "Microsoft ODBC Administrator". I tried to add a "SQL Server" and give it the database name but it failed to connect.
So, then I ran the SQL Server Configuration Manager and looked at the server properties and found this string under the advanced -> startup parameters.."-dc:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDATAmaster.mdf;-ec:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLLOGERRORLOG;-lc:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDATAmastlog.ldf"
My database is in an entirely different folder. The database it looks like it is servicing is a "master.mdf" database installed under the SQL server install folder. So, I figured that I found my problem. I just have to change this file to map to mine. I replaced these three strings with paths to my aspnetdb.mdf/ldf files, and created a LOG folder. Howwever, it wasn't able to connect to this database. It said something like "it doesn't exist or you don't have permission", even though I gave it the right path.
So, I'm at a loss for how to get my application to be able to use the ODBC interface to connect to its very own database on my local system.
What do I need to do? Please help!

connecting to a SQL Server Instance. I have a SQL server DB on a server having an Instance not running on the default port. Let's say ServerAInstanceA has the services exposed on Port 12345. When I'm trying to connect to ServerAInstanceA without specifying the port number, while I can connect from one client machine (ClientA), I am unable to connect from a different client machine (ClientB).On a side note, when I provide the port number, I can connect both from clients A and B. My question is, when I do not provide the port number, why is one client machine able to connect while the other isn't?

Hi,
I have the same problem like Ben. Trying to connect to database engine but failed all the time. I use a SQL 2005 Enterprise Eval version. When I connect to database engine, I put <my computer name>SQLEXPRESS, it gives me this message:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)
I checked the sqlbrowser and it's running. I also enabled port 1434 in Firewall. But it still doesn't work. However, when I connect to analysis service using just <my computer name>, it lets me connected. I tried many ways to fix this problem but still no luck. Could anyone help me solve this problem please? Thanks so much.

Hi there,I sincerely hope that someone out there can help. I have twoinstances of the SQL 2000 Desktop Engine running. One is on my localmachine for development and the other is on another machine on ournetwork which is the production environment. I have built an Access2003 front end application which connects to this database. Thisworks fine locally, as you would expect. I successfully installed thedatabase on the production machine and am able to connect to it viaAccess 2003 (using the Data Link Properties window) and from thirdparty database manager software (similar to Enterprise Manager). I amnot able to to connect to the database via my application.I am using the "sa" account with a strong password. This is myconnection string:strConnection = "Provider=sqloledb;DataSource=server02;UserId=sa;Password=strong;Initial Catalog=Test"The error I'm getting is:"Connection cannot be used to perform this operation. It is eitherclosed or invalid in this context."The connection string is the only thing that changes in my code when Iswitch from my local to my production database. Is there some reasonthat I can't use the "sa" account in this fashion that I'm not awareof? I'd rather not use integrated security for simplicity's sake asthis is a small, internal application. Also, I would have thoughtthat if that was the issue, I couldn't use "sa" at all, even locally.I'm going to post to the Access group as well but thought someone heremight have some advice to offer as well. Thanks,Barb

We have a SQL Server 2000 ent edition sp4 with 3 small databases and one 4 GB database which is REPLICATED
The Server has been bouncing like a yoyo today because of a disk controller problem and I am preparing to move the Instance to a whole new server this afternoon. The new Server will have the same IP and name as the original server.
Any suggestions for the easiest or most seamless way to make this happen? preferably using Backup and Restore since they plan on taking the old server down completely and then building a new server with the same name and IP ... any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello,
I moved the web app. I'm working on to another machine. Everything seemed to go well. Installed Reporting Services and configuration worked well with green ticks everywhere and I'm running reports in Report manager and in Visual Studio. However running off the web app. gives the message:
"The attempt to connect to Report Server failed" - there's also a ref. to an HTTP 404 error.
In RSWebApplication.config I have :
<ReportServerUrl></ReportServerUrl>
<ReportServerVirtualDirectory>ReportServer</ReportServerVirtualDirectory>
and in RSreportserver.config I have:
<UrlRoot><server IP>/Reportserver</UrlRoot>
The install might not have gone as well as I thought because there was a "ReportServer" website created in IIS at same level as default. (Also Reports and ReportServer as virtual directories under Default website). The rogue website is 'stopped' at present. Would be grateful for any help with this. One thing is that I'm now behind a proxy so I'm using localhost:8080

Hi, all. I have more than 100 DTS packages on one server which need to be migrated to another new server. What's the easiest way to do it? I can do it by opening each package then using save as to save into another server. But I have more than 100, so it is kind of tedious to do it.
Is there a way like export those packages then import them? Or script them then run it? If yes, Let me know how.
Thank you in advance.

Guys,
We are currently moving our environment. I was told that we need to copy all the stuff over. More specifically, we want to move everything except the data, as our data is dynamic and will fill up in a few days by itself.
What is the best way to move everything over from one server instance to another?
My current approach is the following:
1. Create the file groups we have on our current server on the new server
2. Script out all databases with stored procedures, functions, views, priviliges, indexes ...
3. Script out all the jobs
4. Script out all the dts packages (or rather save each in a file)
5. Load all scripts into the new sql server
6. Re-create user accounts (can these be scripted out also and then loaded?)
Am I missing something or is there a wiser alternative?
Thanks a lot
