DB Engine :: Cannot Put Database Offline Or In Multi User

Mar 22, 2012

I am trying to place a database offline.

When I right in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio on the database > Take Offline

Set offline failed for Database 'OperationsManagerAC'.

Transaction (Process ID 56) was deadlocked on lock resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction. ALTER DATABASE statement failed. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 1205)

So I am trying with some queries to pass the database from Single user to multi user but it fails

USE [master]
GO
ALTER DATABASE OperationsManagerAC SET MULTI_USER GO
Msg 1205, Level 13, State 68, Line 1</p><p>Transaction (Process ID 52) was deadlocked on lock resources with another process and has been chosen as the deadlock victim. Rerun the transaction.
Msg 5069, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
ALTER DATABASE statement failed.

I tried also

alter DATABASE OperationsManagerAC SET OFFLINE WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE

IT FAILS AS WELL... with the same error... how to run the SQL Statements without using

How to proceed next?

Set Database Back To Multi User From Single User

Feb 27, 2008

I am using SharePoint Services 3.0 (SP1) with default configuration options, which installs the Microsoft##SSEE instance of SQL to my local C: drive.

While attempting to relocate the files to another drive, I set one of the databases (as recommended) to Single User by using the SQL Server Management Express tool.

I cannot now reset that database to Multi User, even by executing the query

exec sp_dboption 'database_name', 'single user', ''FALSE'

again by using the Management Express Tool.

Can someone please help, in plain english???? Thanks

Offline Command Hangs When I Try To Take Database Offline

Apr 10, 2007

Hi, I am relative newbie to SQLServer. When I try to take a user database offline, the query "hangs," with the query processing circle spinning. The Sharepoint 7 application is running on top of the Enterprise SQL Server 2005 db with several logins sleeping and awaiting commands. No errors are generated until I kill the offline command. Anyone have any ideas? Do I need to kill all the connections?

DB Engine :: Dropping OFFLINE Filegroup

Dec 1, 2010

Following a disk crash whilst building an index, the metadata for a 300 million row table has become corrupt.

The index was being built on a specific file/filegroup which I was able to mark offline and the Db continued to be usable.

Unfortunately one of our processes now fails (trying to use the index that was never complete).  I can't diable the index, drop the table, truncate the table or delete the data.  Partial restores of the Db excluding the offending filegroup are successful, but the problem continues to be there!!!

DB Engine :: Keeping Service Up While Taking Drive Offline

Sep 2, 2015

I have clustered instance with two (2) data drives on it. Drive J has around 50 databases on it and drive K has about 15. One of the system administrators was trying to increase the size on K by 20 GB and he instead increased it by 200. Now he needs to take the accidental 180 GB back but the drive will need to come offline briefly. Is it possible to take the K drive offline, along with the databases whose data files resides on it, without taking the whole instance down?

Multi-User Access Of SQL Database

Sep 11, 2007

Please help....
I have designed an application that uses sql server 2005 express database. This application was intended to be installed and used on a local desktop machine. However, now this application needs to be also installed on several computers and still needs to use only 1 database. Part of the database saves local user settings, so what I have done thus far is use two connection strings: one for local database (because the application may be used as origionally intended) and one for remote database that everyone should be able to connect to.

When I remotely connect to the database, it works fine. However, it seems to be locked so when I chose the same database for another user I get the error message "This File Is In Use." I need to know how to unlock it and make it usable for several users at the same time.

Thank you for your help! Please let me know if you need more information or if something is unclear in my description.

DB Engine :: How To Prevent User Of DB Owner To Backup Database

Nov 6, 2015

vendor did a full backup for his database and put some folder not being backed up by TSM, he is the owner of the database, and delete his backup later. The backup is not copy only, all the differential and log backups taken are based on his FULL backup. so they cannot be restored.

QUESTION: To prevent this happen in the future, what is the normal practices? or any way to prevent db_owner to do the ad-hoc full backup? I am thinking of using DENY backup database, or write a policy  claiming no responsibility if vendor make it happen again.

DB Engine :: Extract All Privileges And User Password For A User In DDL Format For Server?

Jul 12, 2010

My goal is to write a DR plan where i am restoring all user databases onto a diffrent server in a event of hardware failure. I was trying to figure out a way to extract DDL of user accounts and their permissions on all user databases so i can simplify my DR documentation.

This is the plan I came up with...to restore all system and user dbs on a different Physical SQLServer.

1. build named instance $PROD

2. restore master database

    - startup sqlserver in single user mode -m or DAC sqlcmd -S ServerName -U sa -P<xxx> –A
    net stop MSSQLSERVER$PROD
    net start MSSQLSERVER$PROD -m
    - restore database master from disk e:master.bak with replace;

3. start sqlserver normally

4. stop SQLServer agent

5. restore msdb

-restore database msdb disk e:msdb.bak with replace;

6. restart SQLServer

7. Restore User Databases.

8. Run Sp_change_users_login for all users

-Sp_Change_users_logins 'auto_fix','username'

Deploying Multi-user Sql Express Database To SQL Express Server

Jul 10, 2007

Okay, I've read massive topics on ClickOnce, and embedded database applications, etc, etc.

I need a handful of good suggestions how I can create a deployment package, to get my sql express database onto a SQL Express server.

The database will need to be multi-user, because I am also developing a WinForms application to connect to the SQL Express database.

I'm thinking I need to use some automated scripting features, to generate scripts for the database once I am done (unless you have a better suggestion).

After that, I need to know what to do with those scripts, and how can I create a setup / deployment packages to run those scripts against a SQL Express server.

The other alterntative obviously is to copy my sql express database, and run an attach command. This will work the first time, only because this will have been the first deployment of this database.

Please keep in mind when answering this question, that I will not be embedding the database, and as far as I understand ClickOnce is a feature for use with embedded databases or user instance databases (not sure).

SQL 2012 :: Disaster Recovery Options For Multi-Database Multi-Instance Environment

Sep 23, 2014

Disaster Recovery Options based on the following criteria.

--Currently running SQL 2012 standard edition
--We have 18000 databases (same schema across databases)- majority of databases are less than 2gb-- across 64 instances approximately
--Recovery needs to happen within 1 hour (Not sure that this is realistic
-- We are building a new data center and building dr from the ground up.

What I have looked into is:

1. Transactional Replication: Too Much Data Not viable
2. AlwaysOn Availability Groups (Need enterprise) Again too many databases and would have to upgrade all instances
3. Log Shipping is a viable option and the only one I can come up with that would work right now. Might be a management nightmare but with this many databases probably all options with be a nightmare.

Single-User Vs. Multi-User SQL Server

Jun 21, 2004

I have written a VB/SQL Server based application. The application uses stored procs and the SQL Server security model to handle logins and permissions. My partner and I want to sell the applicaiton to specific businesses and offer a rental program for smaller companies that would like to use the application to connect to an internet based database. The application uses TCP/IP with a specific port number to connect to the database so it can be used in or out of LAN.

If we rent the application, maintenance is simple. I just create a user in the database with the login/password the user would like and viola they have access to the data.

When a company wants to purchase the program to use in-house, we would like to offer two alternatives: #1 a single user or #2 a multiple user SQL Server database.

My question is if a company purchases the single-user version, how can we keep them from adding users to their database. In other words, since we have no control over the database at the client's location, how can we ensure that it remains a single-user database?

Thanks for any help!

Hi all,

We have a serious problem.
The database in SQL Server 6.5 is marked offline
and the error log displayed the following messages :
udopen : file 'F:Filename.DAT' is incorrect size (614400 bytes, should be 537600)

udactivate (primary) : failed to open device 'F:Filename.DAT' for vdn 131

The entries for the device exists in sysusages and sysdevices.

Anyone encountered this before?
Please help if you know how we can get the database online, again.

Database Taken Offline

Feb 28, 2006

Over the weekend I had one of my databases taken offline. To my knowledge no one explicitly took this database offline. This isn't to say that someone did and is refusing to speak up. I'm just trying to find some answers.

I do know that our IT dept. did maintenance to a number of our servers and they swear nothing was done to this one. So my question is, "Is there any SQL process that can take a database offline."

I've checked the log files but there isn't anything that directly points to that database being taken offline.

Running Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4, SQL 2000 SP3 on a NT INTEL X86 platform.

Any ideas or comments are appreciated!

Database Offline

Mar 12, 2007

What exactly is database offline? I tried to google it but didn't get what I was looking for.

One of my environments has few users. They attach databases and run an application to produce the results. Sometimes they forget to detach databases after their use and these databases remain in SQL Server. Sometimes they leave the database to use it in future.

At the moment there are about 900 databases attached. I believe these attached databases are using the servers resources and therefore, decrease performance. Is this correct?

I was thinking to force the users to detach databases that they do not need and attach when they need. Then thought why shouldn't just set the database to offline and take it back online when they need. Does this increase performance? Does this save server's resources?

Thanks,

Canada DBA

Copying Database Offline

May 19, 2008

I'm going overseas this summer with my laptop and I have to continue working on a project. Unfortunately that laptop only has Windows Vista Home Premium. I can't afford to get the upgrade but am in the position of having to copy a database from the server to my laptop so I can continue working on it. What I need to do is find a way to copy the database over but in the case where the two computers aren't connected over a network. Is this possible? I tried to simply copy the .mdb, but there were permissions errors (of course). Is there a way to do this? It's pretty important that I get it on the laptop one way or another. Thank you!

Help - Script That Checks For OFFLINE Database

Hello ,

I have got a script which checks for the databases that are offline. and mails the dba when any of the database is offline.

When I schedule the job , for every hour , it gives me an blank mail only with the subject ' status of database on testsql' even though no databases are offline.

So how can I change the script , so that it mails the dba only when a database is offline even though its scheduled every hour or half an hour.

The script is:

Backup Of Database Doesn't Take Source DB Offline

Jul 16, 2014

I'm using 2014 SE.I know a backup of a database doesn't take the source DB offline, but then I need to move this DB to another server (for intensive reporting work). At present we restore the DB, but that means putting the DB in single user mode, kicking everyone off, and completing the restore.

I see from 2014 EE notes that "online restore" is possible. EE is of course, mightily expensive.Or perhaps it's possible to configure things to speed up the restore process somehow, so there is less downtime?, the resource impact in creating the backup is quite high, perhaps there's a way to (apart from playing with backup compression) reduce the impact on the source server here?

SP2 Maintenance Backup Fails On Offline Database.

May 29, 2007

I have a maintenance plan step to perform transaction log backups. There are a few databases that are offline. The backup seems to fail because it tries to backup the offline databases. The backup step is by itself as one of three subplans, although it also fails when it is the only step in a plan with only one subplan.

I have another server that is only on SP1 and it does not have problems handling the offline databases.

Is this an issue with SP2(9.0.3054)?
