SQL Server Field Level Encryption

Sep 16, 2005

Where can I get some information on field-level encryption in SQL Server?  My users will be installing my ASP.NET app on a laptop and taking it out "into the field".  If it gets stolen they want some safeguards.I've suggested that they encrypt the hard drive and things, but they want field-level encryption for the data.  I know how to do things like hash a password, but that doesn't help with retrieval.  I have to be able to search on and decode the data.  For example, I have SSN as a field.  I need to be able to search on SSN, display it to the user, and allow them to change it.The other problem is partial searches.  If I encrypt SSN in the database then I can probably just search on the hashed value, but if I want to search on "smith" and get all of the smiths, smithes, etc., then I can't search on the encrypted value.  I have about 1 million records, so decrypting each name to do the search would be prohibitive.Anyway, I'm sure this has been done, so if there is a thread or a site that discusses this I'd be willing to read up on it.

Handling Encryption At The Application Level

Oct 14, 2006

Developing an application, which is handling encrypting for a SQL server 2005 DB at the application level, using symmetric AES encryption. After being encrypted the data is being sent to the SQL server 2005 DB to be inserted. This is what I want to accomplish. But I have one or two questions as I am going through the research for my project.

Encrypting the data shouldn€™t be that big a deal, but can SQL server 2005 handle to insert these data? If yes how? I am thinking just simple SQL INSERT statements?
When the data are inserted can SQL server, as it supports AES encryption, through the DBMS decrypt the data as they have been encrypted else where and then perform specific functions? (by specific function I just mean any function that may have to run, it could be any function one could think of)
How difficult would it be to take the encrypted data from SQL server to the application and then at the application level decrypt these?
Any help on the above questions is highly appreciated or if people have any comment on the subject I would be more than happy to receive these.

Thank you

DB Engine :: No Database Encryption Key Is Set

Jul 15, 2015

I'm a newbie to SQL and I inherited a 2008 R2 Sql server with about 20 different databases on it.  I've noticed that more than half of the databases are encrypted and I was looking to encrypt the rest but for some reason I am unable to do so.  I'm assuming I already have a master key created but when I go to Options of the DB and change Encryption Enabled from False to True I get and error, "Cannot change database encryption state because no database encryption key is set."  How I could use my existing key to encrypt the databases or would I have to create a separate key for each db?

Connection String Encryption For SQL Server Mobile

Sep 28, 2006

I'm seeking suggestions on how to go about encrypting a database connection string in the compact framework. It's something that I thought would be relatively straight forward as I've accomplished it without much difficulty in the full framework, but I'm stuggling to find a solution.

I've been trying to implement a solution using public/private key asymmetric encryption using the RSA provider. I've essentially been trying to encrypt the connection string once on my development machine so that I can include both the encrypted connection string value and public key in either code or an external file. I'd then keep the private key out of harms reach. The problem I've encountered in doing this is that that RSA provider seemingly only allows new "in session" keys to be generated and I can't figure out a way of importing a public key from a file or other similar means.

I found the following code which is meant to allow a key to be retrieved from a signed assembly or an SNK file, which I've converted to VB but haven't been able to get working:

http://www.topxml.com/-NET-XML-System-XML/re-2963_Get-RSA-Public-key-from-Assembly-or-SNK-File.aspx

After the code seems to successfully prepare the CspParameters from an SNK files, I get an unspecified error when executing ImportParameters on the RSA provider.

I'd imagine this to be a common requirement, but haven't been able to find much information specific to the compact framework on the web. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

This would be preferable to using mapped drives etc.

HELP!! SQL Server Express 2005 Engine Connection To My DB

Sep 26, 2006

Preface, I am just starting to learn about database and web development.

I installed VS.net 2005 which updated my web site project file and automatically attached it to a database. It connected to ".app_dataaspnetdb.mdf". However it messed something up and the connection didn't work. If I create a project from scratch, it connects to its DB just fine, but not my upgraded project.

However, when I publish my web site, I need to use ODBC. So, my thought was to simply set up the system locally in a way that will make it easy to connect on the web site. I was told to add a system DSN to the "Microsoft ODBC Administrator". I tried to add a "SQL Server" and give it the database name but it failed to connect.

So, then I ran the SQL Server Configuration Manager and looked at the server properties and found this string under the advanced -> startup parameters.."-dc:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDATAmaster.mdf;-ec:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLLOGERRORLOG;-lc:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDATAmastlog.ldf"

My database is in an entirely different folder. The database it looks like it is servicing is a "master.mdf" database installed under the SQL server install folder. So, I figured that I found my problem. I just have to change this file to map to mine. I replaced these three strings with paths to my aspnetdb.mdf/ldf files, and created a LOG folder. Howwever, it wasn't able to connect to this database. It said something like "it doesn't exist or you don't have permission", even though I gave it the right path.

So, I'm at a loss for how to get my application to be able to use the ODBC interface to connect to its very own database on my local system.

What do I need to do? Please help!

Isolation Level Of Connection In Connection Pool

Feb 16, 2007

client: ado.net 2.0 SqlClient, xp sp 2

server: sql server 2005, win 2k

I have a stored proc eg spProcA which does not start a transaction

If I call this proc from ado.net code without any transaction around it affecting the isolation level, the isolation level within the proc call is read committed, as expected

If I then call the same proc within a System.Transacstion.TransactionScope with a different isolation level eg Serializable, then i get the expected isolation level in the proc.

However, if i retry the proc without any transaction around it, the isolation level is now the same as the TransactionScope, (eg Serializable), and this persists until either the connection pool clears down (either because it becomes dormant or via an explicit ClearAllPools.

I can resolve this problem by setting the isolation level in every proc (or call to every proc), but i wondered if i am missing something more straight forward?

The SSE Provider Did Not Find The Database File Specified In The Connection String. At The Configured Trust Level (below High Trust Level), The SSE Provider Can Not Automatically Create The Database File.

Aug 31, 2007

The problem that I am having is that with Visual Web Developer I am creating a webpage and having it directly put online, so for example when I start a new ASP.NET page, I select the location to be HTTP, with the location http://MYWEBSERVER/Website   and for the language and Visual BasicI notice a couple of things, first that there is no longer a a link under the Main toolbar "Website" selection called the ASP.NET configuration.  So how can I configure what I want to have users be able to do?  It seems that this choice is only available if I am building the ASP.NET page on my "localhost".  So that is the first problem.  So I am able to get the pages to work, atleast the things such as the textboxes to show up etc, (Even things as advanced as the "Login" box).  How ever when I try to get someone to try to login  I am taken to a page that has an server error.  The error is:
"The SSE Provider did not find the database file specified in the connection string. At the configured trust level (below High trust level), the SSE provider can not automatically create the database file. "
The Stack Trace Errors are at the bottom.  I think this is happening because the automatically generated databases are not getting built online as they are on my computer.  On my computer I have MSSQL express.  So either the databases are not getting built for some reason, (and I think that is the case as I don't see any in the folder).  So I think that somehow I have to create a database on my server, and then somehow configure the ASP.NET file, perhaps in the Web.Config file to look for that new database.  Is this the correct methodology?   Is there some simpler way that I can just somehow upload things as they are and have them work correctly on my server?   The error says that either the Server did not find the database or that the trust level was insufficient.  I don't think that is it as I just looked again and I don't see any .MDF files.  So how would I go about getting this to work right? Is there a way to do this with MySQL also?  So that I don't have to use MSSQL?  My server only allows 1 DataBase for that.
Thanks and I hope my question makes sense.  It is basically how can I get it to be able to create and check users etc. online?

Connection Level Variable For Trigger Use Possible?

I need to pass a application userid on every call to my database for triggers on the db to use.

I am connecting to my database using integrated security from my application, all on one windows domain account. However I need to get an application user id over on the connection for triggers to use to stamp in changelogs.

Currently everytime we open a connection we create a #table with the user id in it, but that is expensive, especially in our new SOA where connections are frequently created and dropped on requests.

Is there any way I can get a connection level variable over to the database server so triggers could read it?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Encryption not supported on SQL server.

I did google for this error, but have tried all suggestions, including updating the MsDtsSvr.ini.xml file with the servername. I am using a default instance.

Also, I am only able to access the MSDB folder if I set the SQL service account to the local admin account. I have also set the SQL service account to be part of the local admins group, but without any luck.

When I try to use symetric or asymetric encryption, I am not able to put "OPEN SYMETRIC KEY" code in a function. So, I am using PassPhrase mechanism.
