DB Engine :: How To Identify If TempDB Contention On Page Is PFS / GAM Or SGAM

Jun 23, 2015

 I have used Extented event to monitor the occurances of TempDB contention on Production server . I found there are several entried logged in in 30 mints .Now I am trying to determin if Tempdb contention on PFS, GAM or SGAM page then I will decide if I need to increase the number of TempDB data files on Production server . Currently , There are 8 TempDB Data files configured on its separate Disks .There are Page_IDs  I found in the extented events for Tempdb files -

Page_ID  =1 for PFS page
Page_ID = 2 for GAM page
Page_ID =3 for SGAM page

but I found the Below Page_IDs and I know there is a formula that you can use to identify if page is PFS,GAM or SGAM ? How should I use this formula and what should I look for to determine if page is PFS,GAM or SGAM ? Is there any threshold value for the duration of TempDB contention occured ?

DB Engine :: Using Metadata To Identify Which Objects Update Tables?

May 6, 2015

we run 2008 std edition (I believe r2 on this server, will double check) and I need to find a needle in a haystack.

I am looking at two tables and would like to learn which, if any objects on same db updates these tables.   I'd even live with any references to these tables.  I already know sql agent is out of the picture.  I'm looking for a static approach, not a monitoring one because its possible updates don't occur till month end.

Is there a way in sql server to query the answer to such a question using dmvs or something like dmvs?   What if I get bold and want to search all db's on this server for objects that update my two tables even across dbs?

In the mean time, i'll look at scripting all triggers and procs , and doing a search on these table names in the scripts.

I don't know that I've ever seen a way to script all triggers before.  Procs I can easily script from the object explorer details.  But I'm not sure if in explorer details--> server objects --> triggers does what I hope it does.

DB Engine :: How To Recycle TempDB Without Rebooting It

May 21, 2013

We have an App server where Microsoft reporting services (report Builder 2005) is hosted and the backend Database server which is used by the reporting services.

The clients create very complex reports (usually towards month end) and run against the database causing the tempdb grow expenentially, leading to perfromance degradation and worst case space issues.Our only solution is to reboot the server.

There should be many systems which sould be having similar scenarios like mine. How to handle the scenario.usually in my database tempdb should be below 15GB... but it had grown to 60GB in some instances.

DB Engine :: Server TempDB Set On RAM Disk

Oct 23, 2015

I try to find some feedback regarding setting the TempDB files on a RAM disk.Specifically I am looking for "production results" that could show the difference/benefit of such an usage.The tests on physical server and VM I already made have shown a boost in overall SQL Server 2012 performance on SQL Server instances housing data for SharePoint 2013 and Dynamics AX 2012 R2.Graphic below show differences between 5 different configuration on the same physical server:

- Physical HD:  Server with local HD
- Physical SANEX1PRD: Server with TempDB files stored on a low-end SAN
- Physical SAN1: Server with TempDB files stored on a high-end SAN (around 100000 IOps)
- Physical SAN1 Jumbo: same setup with Jumbo Frame activated on NIC and DB engine
- Physical RAMdrive: with TempDB files stored on a 16 GB soft RAM drive within OS memory

Results were really impressive for the DB engine housing Dynamics AX data. My colleagues from the SharePoint team told me it also boosted a bit overall SharePoint performances but they did not have any baseline comparison to show.If you have some feedback, results, links, whatever I am interested.Indeed before setting this to all our SQL Server 2012 instances I y rather collect some *real world* feedback.

DB Engine :: One Query Using Up Whole TempDB (50GB)?

Aug 18, 2015

I have a query that is using up the whole TempDB (50GB) and still failing because the disk runs out of space.

The script has SELECT FROM SELECT FROM SELECT etc. and in each select it also seems to have joins.

I can also see a few UNION and UNION ALLs.

Is this normal for one query to use up that much space?

If I wanted to make this better where would I start?

DB Engine :: Cannot Remove One Last Data File From TempDB

May 19, 2015

In tweaking performance of tempdb by adding add'l data files I want to reset back to defaults and remove all add'l files I've created.  I was not able to do it for most as they were in use, but by starting the server in single-user mode with all other sql services shut off, and using sqlcmd I was able to use the ALTER DATABASE tempdb REMOVE FILE <tempdev#> to remove the files... except for one.

I have also tried using the command:

ALTER DATABASE tempdb MODIFY FILE (NAME = tempdev#, FILENAME = '<new location');

Restarted SQL server, and tried the ALTER DATABASE ... REMOVE FILE again but am always denied with the message that the file can't be removed b/c it's still in use.

I also tried to shrink it with EMPTYFILE but that also fails with the message that a page is a work table page and can't be removed.

I really need to get tempdb back to just one data file but am unable to find a way to remove this last data file.

Reason I ask is tempdb filled up and the only thing I could see running at that time was the update statement.

We have SQL Server 2012 EE SP2 server that is getting hit by reports that time-to-time use up to 300GB of tempdb.

It's happening because our clients can use 'bad' parameters for some reports.

Is there a way to autokill sessions that overuse tempdb (for example, if a session uses more than 15Gb in tempdb)?

Killing can happen immediately or after regular check (5 min for example).

Could Not Allocate New Page For Database 'TEMPDB'?

May 9, 2004

"Could not allocate new page for database 'TEMPDB'. There are no more pages available in filegroup DEFAULT. Space can be created by dropping objects, adding additional files, or allowing file growth."

I get this error when running a query on another database. But why?

Both data and transaction files on TEMPDB are set to "automatically grow file" and "unrestricted file growth" and there is 70GB of free space on the disk drive. Shouldn't the files just grow? Why would this happen?

Could Not Allocate New Page For Database 'TEMPDB'

May 22, 2004

I get the following error when doing a variety of basic queries on other databases:

"Could not allocate new page for database 'TEMPDB'. There are no more pages available in filegroup DEFAULT. Space can be created by dropping objects, adding additional files, or allowing file growth."

This doesn't make any sense since they are set to auto grow and there is plenty of disk space to do so.

Both data and transaction files of tempdb are set to:
"Automatically grow file" is checked
"Maximum file size" is set to "Unrestricted file growth"
Growth rate of 10%

Both tempdb data file and transaction file are on D: but all drives have ample space:
c:25 GB free
D:69 GB free
E:175 GB free

sp_spaceused returns the following for tempdb:

namesizeunallocated space
tempdb4.00 MB1.45 MB

reserveddataindex_sizeunused
568 KB176 KB304 KB88 KB

sp_helpdb returned for tempdb:

This is with SQL Server 2000 (Personal Edition)

Is this some strange limitation of Personal Edition? Is it worth upgrading to Standard Edition?

Could Not Allocate New Page For Database 'TEMPDB' Help

Oct 18, 2007

Hello, I have an issue with a process that blows up because of the following error.

Executed as user: batchloader. Updated 0 existing Company records [SQLSTATE 01000] (Message 0) Inserted 0 new Company records [SQLSTATE 01000] (Message 0) Inserted 0 new EntityIdXref records [SQLSTATE 01000] (Message 0) Updated 977 existing CompanyCustomerAttr records [SQLSTATE 01000] (Message 0) Inserted 0 new CompanyCustomerAttr records [SQLSTATE 01000] (Message 0) Could not allocate new page for database 'TEMPDB'. There are no more pages available in filegroup DEFAULT. Space can be created by dropping objects, adding additional files, or allowing file growth. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 1101). The step failed.

Ok I am going to be typeing some really bad practices(I just started here 3 weeks ago.)

There is 23.6 gig free on my log drive. The disk is not running out of space and there are no disk errors in event viewer. The process in question calles 2 procs. These 2 proces load files from the filesystem and bulk load them into #temp tables. Then select's from these tables are issued using criteria from a static table. There are around 700000 rows being inserted into the #temp tables and no indexes are being created so very large table scans going on. Also there are some cursors being called to row by row minipulate the records and in the cursor it calles fucntions using cursors. There are thousands of files being processes everyday by several different jobs. All of the processes are written the same way. We have the tempdb set to auto grow by 10 % and the initial size is 3.5 gig. There are 3 to 4000 tables in the database and 90 % of them are being created on the fly to be used by this process and yes once again there are no indexes created on the on the fly tables. We have only one Filegroup on the server default.

I believe that takeing some of the objects and moving them to there own filegroup will help this issue. Every month we take on up to 800000 new records to process on top of what we allready do. So we use cursors cursors cursors temp objects with no indexes and massive recordsets and doing sorts on massive records sets. I am working with development to show them how and where to index but this will take time. I need a quick solution. Any thoughts any questions? The box has 4 gig of ram.

Dts.Variables Collection, Threading, And Contention

Apr 29, 2008

All,

We are experiencing some problems when running the same package on multiple threads of a C# application concurrently. The package instances seem to share a Dts.Variables collection.

I have created a test application and package to reproduce the issue. The package is very simple. It has two variables - Instance (Int32) and Content (string). The test application runs two concurrent threads that run through 25 iterations running the package. Each thread loads the package, sets the instance, and then runs the package. The package then takes the instance, sticks it in the Content variable and then writes it to a file called "FileX" where X is the Instance. Thread 1 sets the instance from 1 to 25, thread 2 sets it from 26 to 50. The test execution results in about 15% of the files containing the incorrect "instance content". That is, I'll see "42" in the file named "File14", or something along those lines. This tells me that the variables are being overwritten.

I ran another test where I created a copy of the package, so the code is identical, but the VersionGUID is different. Running the thread test application always succeeds. There is no file name/content mismatch. I then ran another test where I manually edit the XML of the package to change the VersionGUID before the package is loaded (by calling LoadFromXml). Again this never fails.

Changing the VersionGUID may work for us, but it is a total hack. Has anyone else experienced this or have any other solutions? Any thoughts on manually updating the VersionGUID to get around this problem? I hate doing this, but we are getting desperate.

Thanks in advance,

Rob

I Need To Pass Data Entered /created On The First Page To The Next Page And Populate The Next Page With Some Data From The Fir

Nov 28, 2006

Hello I have a project that uses a large number of MS Data access pages created in Access 2003 and runs on MS SQL2005.

When I am on lets say my client, (first page in a series) data access page and I have completed the fields in the (DAP), I am directing my users to the next step of the registration process by means of a hyperlink to another Data access page in the same web but in a linked or sometimes different table.

I need to pass data entered /created on the first page to the next page and populate the next page with some data from the first page / table. (like staying on the client name and ID when i go to the next page)

I also need the first data access page to open and display a blank or new record. Not an existing record. I will also be looking to creata a drop down box as a record selector.

Any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.
I am some what new to data access pages so a walk through would be nice but anything you got is welcome. Thanks Peter€¦

Expression After Table Object Forced To Display On The Last Page Even There Are Still Spaces At The Bottom Of The First Page.

Oct 16, 2006

The following objects are placed on the Report body of the Report pane of SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services :

<textbox: expression1>
<textbox: expression2>

<table:table1 with at least 30 columns and 30 expressions>

<textbox: string1> - considered as the Title in the Footer section of the report

<texbox:string2> <textbox:expression3>
<textbox:string3> <textbox:expression4>
<textbox:string4> <textbox:expression5>
<textbox:expression6>

I can't find any explanation why is it string1 and string 2 of the footer section of my report displayed separately from the expression3 which is aligned on it and the rest of the object on the second page.

The expected design is that all Footer items should be displayed together of whether it is placed on the first page or on the last page.

As a workaround of this, I converted string 1 into an expression (Added = and enclosed the string with double quote).. As a result, all of the items in the Footer section are now placed together on the last page of the report.

I also remember one of the issue I encountered before where the Footer items where placed together on the first page and still have space at the bottom of the page, but then expression 6 is forced to display (alone) on the last page of my report.

I can't find any discussion related to this, I wish somebody could give me an idea why RS behaved like this.

Thanks in advance

Local - Including Page Header Forces Viewer To Expand To Page Size

Jul 17, 2007

Hello,
If I have a report that includes a page header, the report viewer will render the report at the full width, but if I hide the page header and show only the body it will use the absolute width of the report.

I have a 7" wide report, with .75" borders set on each side.

Interactive & Print size are set to 8.5x11
Changing these sizes has no effect on the behavior of the viewer, which appears to ignore them.

When I view this report in the local viewer the contents fill the window if there is no page header.
If I enable the page header then the report is drawn at 8.5" wide, leaving a _big_ white border on the right side.
Any comments or workarounds that anyone knows? I know the local viewer is not a standard configuration (at least it seems) but it is what we need to use.Thanks,//Andrew
