DB Engine :: How To Point Linked Server To Specific Database / Rename Linked Server

Apr 24, 2015

I am using Linked Server in SQL Server 2008R2 connecting to a couple of Linked Servers.

I was able to connect Linked Servers, but I cannot point to a specific database in a Linked Server, also, I cannot rename Linked Server's name.

How to point the linked server to a specific database? How to rename the Linked Server?

The following is the code that I am using right now:

USE [master]
GO
EXEC master.dbo.sp_addlinkedserver
    @server = N'Machine123Instance456',
    @srvproduct=N'SQL Server' ;
GO
EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin 'Machine123Instance456', 'false', NULL, 'username', 'password'

Rename A Linked Server

Sep 26, 2006

I have an app that has some stored procedures running queries across a linked server. In our development environment, the linked database is on a box called 10.xxx.xxx.xx. In the production environment, the linked database will be on a server called something else. What I want to do is have the linked server in the development environment named the same thing as the linked server in the production environment, so that I won't have to change the stored procedures when migrating the project into production.

SQL Server 2005 isn't giving me the option to rename or alias the linked server, though. Is there anyway to do this so that I can have the linked server named the same thing on the two different boxes and not have to change the sp's?

DB Engine :: AD Linked Server

Aug 21, 2015

I have been trying to configure a linked server to AD and have found plenty of write ups on how to do it, but have had zero luck with getting it to work.  I also read that the ability was removed after SQL 2008; is that correct?  I am running 2014 and am seeing the following error trying to expand the tree:

Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Sdk.Sfc)...An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo)

Cannot obtain the required interface ("IID_IDBSchemaRowset") from OLE DB provider "ADSDSOObject" for linked server "ADSI". (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 7301). URL....Then the following error when trying to query:

SELECT * FROM OpenQuery(ADSI, 'SELECT displayName FROM ''LDAP://<DOMAIN>/DC=DOMAIN,DC=<DOMAIN>'' WHERE objectCategory=''User'' ')
Msg 7321, Level 16, State 2, Line 1

An error occurred while preparing the query "SELECT displayName FROM 'LDAP://----/DC=----,DC=----' WHERE objectCategory='User' " for execution against OLE DB provider "ADSDSOObject" for linked server "ADSI".

The linked server is set for 'Be made by the login's current security context' and local to remote is configured SA to a domain account we use for lookups.  It does not seem to matter if I am logged in to the server with SQL or Windows credentials.

SQL 2012 :: Selecting From Linked DB2 Server / Specific Column

May 13, 2014

I've got an OLEDB DB2 linked server to a db2/AS400 instance and selecting from a table on the server has never caused problems before. One of the columns is a large text field. If I select all the columns but the large text field, it returns as normal, but including the large text field now, I get:

"Transport error: shared memory provider error: 0 - no process is on the other end of the pipe"

The largest entry in the text field is about 5k characters, and there don't appear to be any strange characters.

DB Engine :: Linked Server Set In Cluster Environment

Apr 24, 2015

Need to set up a linked server in two node SQL Cluster pointing to a standalone SQL thru security setting "be made using current login's security context". It's double hop Kerberos setup. Cluster uses a domain account, so we manually set SPNs for that account with both instance name and protocol as well (set up these SPNs with SQL virtual name only).

Also, constrained delegation has been  set to that stand alone SQL services (MSSQLSvc).

Both SQL cluster and standalone servers are in same domain, cluster service account is domain account and standalone SQL uses default SQL local service account.

Coming to SQL, when I create linked server, sometimes it lets me create without issues and sometime it throws this below warning and even if I create it won't work.

 Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY/ANANOMOUS LOGIN'.

DB Engine :: Linked Server Double Hop To Clipper Tables 64-32 Bit

Jul 23, 2015

I am attempting to reach some Clipper tables through a 32-bit ODBC driver from a 64 bit SQL Server. As there is no 64 bit driver offered for Clipper, I am pursuing a solution similar to the one described here:

Creating a Linked Server with 64 bit SQL Server 2008 to MS Access

It involves using a SQL Express 32 bit instance as a bridge.

I have created a Linked Server on the 32 bit instance MTESTXPRESS as follows:

EXEC sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'ABDATA', @srvproduct=N'DataDirect 4.1', @provider=N'MSDASQL', @datasrc=N'ABServerCA'
On the 64 bit instance ALISTESTER I have another Linked Server as follow:
EXEC sp_addlinkedserver @server = N'ABACUS', @provider=N'SQLNCLI', @datasrc=N'ALISTESTERMTESTEXPRESS'

The suggestion is to then use a select statement such as:

SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY(ABACUS, 'SELECT COUNT(*) FROM ABDATA...ABBATCH')

Unfortunately, the DataDirect driver for MTESTEXPRESS will not recognize the 'ABDATA...ABBATCH' 3-part naming convention. The error message is:

An invalid schema or catalog was specified for the provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "ABDATA"

Is there some other way to select from the MTESTEXPRESS linked server?

DB Engine :: Linked Server - Getting Error When Performing Cross Instance Query With Joins

Apr 26, 2015

I've successfully created a Linked Server that connects a local DB Engine with another DB Engine through an ip over an extranet. I am able to run simple Select statement queries on the Local DB Engine and get results from the linked server. However when attempting to perform more complex queries that join tables from the linked server with tables from the local DB server, I get the following error message after several minutes of execution:

OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI11" for linked server "<ip of Linked Server>" returned message "Protocol error in TDS stream".
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI11" for linked server "<ip of Linked Server>" returned message "Communication link failure".

Msg -1, Level 16, State 1, Line 0

Session Provider: Physical connection is not usable [xFFFFFFFF].

OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI11" for linked server "<ip of Linked Server>" returned message "Communication link failure".

Msg -1, Level 16, State 1, Line 0

Session Provider: Physical connection is not usable [xFFFFFFFF].

OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI11" for linked server "<ip of Linked Server>" returned message "Communication link failure".

Msg 10054, Level 16, State 1, Line 0

TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.

How I can resolve it. I've read on Distributed Transactions but I understand that it only applies to manipulation statements?

Both are SQL servers. Linked Server is SQL2008R2 if not mistaken. Local DB Engine is SQL2014.

Rename A Linked Report

Oct 31, 2006

I can find two ways of doing this.

1.SetProperties()

Property[] props = new Property[1];
Property setProp = new Property();
setProp.Name = "Name";
setProp.Value = "NewName";
props[0] = setProp;

rs.SetProperties(itemPath, props);

---> Does this also rename the 'Path' property, becuase this is our key to accessing the reports.

2. MoveItem()
string currentPath = "/Reports/OldName";
string targetPath = "/Reports/NewName";
rs.MoveItem(currentPath, targetPath);

Which should i use and why.. thanks..

Help Connecting Ole/db Linked Server To Msaccess Database In A Different Machine Than Sql Server Resides

Jun 29, 2007

Hi,

I have a msaccess linked server that I use to execute sql 2000 stored procedures from a front end in adp (access data project) format without any problem, if it is used on the same machine where the sql server resides (with any user logged on). In any other machine on the local network where I also need to use it, I get an ole/db error message saying that the microsoft jet database engine can not open the file because it's allready opened exclusivly or because it do not has permissions. I created the linked server with both UNC and normal path with the same result.

Thank's for all the help/clues you can give me.

SQL Server 2014 :: Call For DB Backup For A Database On Another (linked) Server

Anyway the dynamic call I am having problems with is that I need to dynamically create a statement to backup a database. It works as long as the database is on the same server / instance as the stored procedure. I want to be able to from server/instance A create a command that does a backup of a database that is on server B. I just can't figure out the syntax for a database backup where the database is on another server.

Trying something like [ServerName].[DatabaseName] does not work...

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Access A Database Without Linked Server

Jul 16, 2015

We are upgrading from SQL 2008R2 to SQL2014 but we have discovered that a couple of our applications are not supported on 2014. We'd like to keep one 2008R2 server and one 2014 server until we have time to upgrade the applications and move everything to the new server. The problem is we have custom code in some of the 2014 databases that access tables in the 2008 databases.

I know we can easily do cross server joins by using a linked server, but it would be a huge undertaking to find all that code and add a linked server name in front of every table, stored procedure, etc. So my question is, is there any way to move a database to a different server and still be able to access it without having to qualify the object names with a linked server? Is there some kind of server/database synonym that can be setup that would be recognized by all databases?

Create (U)SP In Database On Linked Server

Aug 1, 2006

Hi,
I'm using a couple of linked servers.
I want to create a stored procedure on all of the linked servers in a database with a name which exists on all of the linked servers.
For executing SQL on all of the linked servers I'm using:

declare @x int
declare @dbname varchar(500)
declare @SQL nvarchar(600)
set @x = 1
create table #databases (ID int IDENTITY,name varchar(500))
insert #databases select instancelongname from instances
while @x <= (select max(id) from #databases)
begin
select @dbname = name from #databases where id = @x
select @SQL='blabla bla bla create PROCEDURE [dbo].[usp_xxxx]'
execute @SQL
set @x = @x + 1
end
drop table #databases

Is it possible to use a ‘create procedure’ in this construction?
Can anybody give me some help how to create a proper syntax for it?

Any help is kindly appreciated!

Linked Server To A MySQL Database

Hi,

I've installed MyODBC-3.51.06 and succsesfully created 2 odbc sources to the MySQL database with the ODBC data source administrator. One is a User DSN, the other a system DSN (Q1: what's the difference?) The test in that applet perfoms positively.

Running a dataimport of the tables using the import data option in enterprise manager does work as well.

Now for the part that gives me trouble. I would like to create a linked server using enterprise manager of SQL server 2000 (SQL 8.00.194) but I'm totaly stuck there. So Q2: how to get this set up?

Sql Server Linked To Oracle Database...very Slow...why?

Dec 26, 2003

Hi i have a sql server instance on my system and it is linking into an oracle database on another server. When i run queries against this other server...it takes forever...

However, when i use access, and link the table and run the same query against the oracle database...it runs immediatly.

I am very confused as to why there would be such a performance difference and why sql server would run so slow.

I am wondering if it has something to do with the way i configured the linked server. there are several options that I didn't know what they meant.

collation compatible (not selected)
Data access (selected)
RPC (not selected)
RPC Out (not selected)
collation name
connection timeout

Creating A Linked Server To An Oracle Database

Aug 29, 2000

Hi all,

I hope someone can help me with linked servers.

In one of my applications running on a MSSQL database, I need to issue a select call to an Oracle database to pull information into my application.

To accomplish this,

1. the ORacle Admin has created a view of the Oracle database for me.
2. I have installed the Oracle client on the SQl server box.
3. A friend has told me that one way to accomplish this is create a linked server from SQL to use OLE/DB for Oracle to connect to the Oracle database
4. So I create the linked server successfully; create the server login sp_addlinkedsrvlogin successfully
5. When I go to query the database, I get the error below:

Server: Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
OLE DB provider 'MSDAORA' reported an error.
[OLE/DB provider returned message: The Oracle(tm) client and networking components were not found. These components are supplied by Oracle Corporation and are part of the Oracle Version 7.3.3 (or greater) client software installation.

You will be unable to use this provider until these components have been installed.]

Anybody understand this?

Thanks in advance,

Cannot Get Linked Server Working To Oracle 10.1 Database

May 16, 2007

Hi -

I am having an issue trying to get a linked server to work from SQL Server 2000 SP4 to an Oracle 10.1 database. This server runs Windows 2003 Server.

I had first installed the Oracle client 10.2 on the server and was able to access the Oracle db using the client.

However - when I set up the linked server on SQL Server - and click the "Tables" underneath the linked server - I get the following error.

OLE DB Provider reported an error.

OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'MSDAORA' IDBInitialize::Initialize returned]

I uninstalled the 10.2 client and put the Oracle 9i client on the server (on a suggestion from a SQL Server DBA to put an earlier client on the server) - still able to connect using the Oracle client - but not via SQL Server.

I have checked to make sure the MSDAORA.dll is registered. I have also checked that the account that SQL Server starts under has proper permissions to the Oracle folders (that login has admin permissions on the server).

I have named the Linked Server the same name as the service name in tsanames.ora.

I'm at a loss - any ideas? Help - i'm tearing my hair out here.

Strange Error On Linked Server - Cannot Open Default Database

Apr 16, 2007

Hi,We have 2 servers. Server1 is a 2000 box, with SP3 (yes I know it isnot up to date). Server2 is a 2005 box, SP2.I set up Server1 (2000) to have a linked server to Server2 (2005). Thereason I did this is because we are using a stored procedure onServer2 to send mail, as we have found that using mail on 2000 doesn'talways work as advertised.When I set up the linked server on the 2000 box, for security I justset it up to use a SQL Server user on the 2005 box. The SQL Serveruser on the 2005 box has permissions to run the stored procedure forsending mail.Here's the weird thing though. When calling the stored procedure onthe 2005 box from the 2000 box, sometimes we get an error that "Thedefault database cannot be opened", and the query does not run on the2005 box. However, it only happens *sometimes*. Other times, the queryruns fine.Since the problem seeemed to be with the default database, I changedthe SQL Server user on 2005 default database to the SAME database thatcontains the stored procedure.However, I just don't understand why it's even TRYING to open thedefault database, since when we called the linked server we are doingso as, and it's referencing the default database in the name:EXEC Server2.DefaultDatabase.dbo.StoredProcedureNameHowever, after changing the user's default database to"DefaultDatabase" as shown above, the query runs fine.Why are we having this problem? That is, if I change the defaultdatabase to something other than "DefaultDatabase", then the querydoesn't run, even though the database name is referenced in the abovequery??Obviously, this is not desireable, because that means we can only runqueries that are in "DefaultDatabase", which may not always be thecase.Thanks much

We have an Enterprise setup with multiple domains.

We a Domain A with SQL server 2008R2 say SQL-A and Domain B with SQL server 2008R2 ( SQL-B). It will be like SQL-A will always access SQL-B. Reverse is not required.

In Domain A we have a .Net Application which accesses SQL-A to perform CRUD operations which ultimately come to SQL- B since all SQL tables exist in SQL- B only.

Need to know the right way to implement Linked Server from SQL-A to SQL-B, so that Domain issues as well as DML execution work smooth.

I need not worry about DDL in SQL-A And SQL-B as it will taken care of by network and H/W team. I just need to focus on as developer.

Configuring A Linked Microsoft Access Database On SQL Server 2005

The following installation:

- Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition running on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
- Client Service for Netware installed.
- Access 2000 database in a Novell Directory Services (NDS) Environment
- SQL Server service running under local Administrator account.

Linked server configured as follow:

Linked server: MyDB
Provider: Microsoft Jet 4.0 OLE DB Provider
Product name: Access 2000
Data Source: UNC path to my Access database

Security: Admin with no password (default Access behaviour)

I can connect to my access database by following the next steps:

- Open Management studio on the SQL Server itself (where I'm logged in as Administrator)
- Connect using Windows Authentication (Administrator)
- Create a new query, run EXEC sp_tables_ex 'MyDB'

This will return all the tables from the Access database.

I can also make a view pointing to MyDB...MyTable.

Enough prove to me It can work....

So far so good

But now the tricky part.

When I login as 'sa', I can't connect and will receive the following message:

OLE DB provider "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0" for linked server "MyDB" returned message "'Full UNC to my access database' is not a valid path. Pls. note, this all works perfectly in MS Access databases with ODBC-Links to Firebird!

From a programmer of a commercial ODBC driver I heard that this problem may be caused internally by SQL Server, there may be no solution possible in the ODBC driver. One workaround would be to use the OPENQUERY-Syntax like

SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY(LINKEDSRV, 'select LVNR from LVVERW ')

Are there any other solutions? Are there any known issues with firebird odbc-drivers and sql server? Are
there any known good drivers for the use with sql-server? What is the purpose of OPENQUERY - workaround ODBC problems? Are there any settings in SQL Server 2000 (2005 Express) that could help? Are there any settings in ODBC DSN that would help?

regards

arno

This "tricky" query does not work:
