Is it possible to backup/restore sql server databases in a logical way like oracle(exp/imp, expdp, impdp, can export/import tables/users etc)?my case, I have a database which has many data files, in different file groups, I would like to put them together into one file and don't want to shred the database.
For a backup strategy, I was thinking of just copying over all the system and user database device (DAT) files (of course after stopping all the SQL services at a time when no one is accessing the database server). Then at the time of restoration, I would copy the files back to their original location.
Not sure this is the correct forum, but I'll give it a go. I am in the process of deploying a series of databases from a development environment to a production environment. I've done some searching around best practices, but haven't found anything specifically calls out what is best. I am looking to find out the best approach for moving the code/tables/views/SP's, well everything from my dev environment to the production environment. Due to the complexity and large number of objects to be created, would a backup/restore to the production server be more prudent than creating a batch file type thing that creates all the objects through a series of scripts?
1.) Taking a database out of an availability group, 2.) Setting the recovery to simple, 3.) Shrinking the log file, 4.) Setting the recovery mode back to full, 5.) Then backing it up.
I need to restore the file to my secondary server with replace and non recovery mode. I am having trouble performing that call? I have the code to reestablish the database to the availability group if I can get the restore feature working.Â
I have a database size of 9.8TB and I backup it to 30 backup devices. Each one has 110GB after backup compression.I tried to restore these files to standby server via 100MbE network but it always failed. My colleague told me this never happen before and I said yes because I have done this before a lot of times when backup devices are significantly smaller. He said the only way is to copy backup files locally and restore locally. But I am trying another method, I create more: 64(maximum) backup devices and try to restore via network again.SQL server version is Microsoft SQL Server 2012 (SP1)
- 11.0.3401.0 (X64)  Jan 9 2014 13:22:15  Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Enterprise Edition: Core-based Licensing (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.1 <X64> (Build 7601: Service Pack 1) .
My customer got a total hard drive failure. After sending it to drive recovery specialist we were able to recover the LDF log file (MyDB_0.LDF).But the MDF file was completely destroyed (MyDB.MDF).They have a good full backup from a month ago.
1) Installed SQL Server 2012 on a new PC 2) Created a new database of same name (MyDB) - with same MDF and LDF file names as original 3) Took the new database offline 4) deleted the MDF and LDF files of the new database 5) put "MyDB_0.LDF" in the place of the LDF file I just deleted 6) put the database back on-line 7) after hitting F5 to refresh databases - it shows "MyDB (Recovery Pending)" 8) tried to do Tail Log Backup with this command   BACKUP LOG [MyDB] TO DISK = N'C:BACKUPMyDB_TailLog.bak' WITH NO_TRUNCATE
And I get this error...
Msg 3447, Level 16, State 1, Line 3 Could not activate or scan all of the log files for database 'MyDB'.
The sad thing is I know we can get this data back using ApexSQL-Log. I can see all the transactions since the last full backup in this program - so the log file is not damaged. But my client doesn't want to pay the $2000 fee for this software. There has to be a way to restore this data, without having to purchase a third party tool.
In our production we have a database by name MyDb.The application team wanted another database by the name MyDbOld which contains the data of Mydb 1 month old. So I created a database MyDbOld in other instance(test) and restored MyDbOld from the one month backup of MyDb in production server. In test instance I backed MyDbOld as MyDbOld.bak...
In the production instance I created a new DB by the name MyDbOld and restored the MyDbOld in the production from the backup of MyDbold.bak in the test instance. Now I have 2 databases in the production instance ie MyDb and 2)MyDbOld. However I find the logical names of both the databases to be the same although the database name and the physical file name to be different. My questions are-:
1) Does it in any manner affect the integrity of the 2 databases if the 2 databases are in the same instance and have the same logical name? 2) Would the dml or data retrieval operations in the 2 databases have any conflict in any manner what so ever? 3) Having a unique database name, and unique file names for the physical files for any database in an instance what is the purpose and significance of additionally having a logical name for a database? 4) Which I could restore a database from the backup of another database in the same instance and at the same time change the logical and physical name of the files to correspond to the new database.
I am facing problem with Logical File Name while restoring database. I am taking a backup of ABC database from Server1 in abc.bak file.
Then I am creating new database XYZ on Server2. Server1 and Server2 are not connected to each other in anyway, since both servers belong to different companies. Here on Server2 I want to restore backup of abc.bak on XYZ database. I select restore from Device, and on option tab I am selecting Force restore over existing database, in the below option I am specifying current Data & log file path for Move to physical file name. But Logical file name shows ABC names, but if I tried to change those to XYZ names then restore fails. But if I keep ABC names then it works.
Is anybody knows how to over come this Logical Name issue?
I want to back up my database to a logical drive and restore it from this logical device. But I am unable to see my logical device through sql server management studio interface. I am able to back up to a logical device and restore it from logical device through T-SQL code. I am wondering how come I am unable to see my logical device from sql server management studio interface. Is there any way, I can solve this problem? Thanks in advance.
Hi,I am planning to automate a nighty restore of a DB on another servercan someone point me in the right direction with the SQL script tomodify the logical file names to the correct path and not the onescarried over with the DB??i.e the database is to be renamed on the new serverany help much appreciatedMany thanks in advance
We tried to restore an empty database from a backup and got: 'Load database encountered an invalid logical page number' error. This then set the database as 'loading'
Anyone got any ideas?
We aren't exactly sure how big the first database was when the backup was done but if the new database isn't big enough to contain the backed up data, wouldn't we get a more meaningful error?
Two servers are configured with Windows 2008 / SQL server 2012 utililizing Always-On for HA. We need to upgrade both servers to Windows 2012 / SQL Server 2014 with minimum downtime(Time for Always-On failover). The upgrade to SQL 2014 is straight forward with for minimum downtime. The Windows upgrade(2008 -> 2012) is the problem. From what I have observed and read in blogs. The Windows node to be upgraded must be removed from the Windows cluster before the node can be upgraded to Win 2012.A Win 2008 and Win 2012 node can not reside in the same cluster. If this is true then the only option I can think of is to dump the DB on WIN 2008 server and restore on Win 2012. This is an outage(time it takes to dump and restore). Is there any other method to upgrade these two nodes utilizing Always-On of some other method without downtime?
I got full backup on daily schedule its taking more space on Drive because each file has more than 25GB.I am using SLQ server 2008R2 so I'm looking to take the backup with compression instead of uncompressed Backup. What are the impacts of compressed backup. Is there any problems with compressed backup while restoring the backup file.
I am looking for a SQL Backup/Restore tools which can restore multiple environments. Here is high level requirements.
1. We have 4 DBs, range from 1 TB - 1.5 TB Each Database. When we restore to QA, DEV, or Staging, we usually restore 4 of them. 2. I am looking for the speed to complete restoring between 1 - 2 hours for 4 DBs.
I am evaluating the Dephix Software but the setup is very complex and its given us a lot of issues with Windows Authentions, and failure in the middle of the backup. I used Guess Software many years ago but can't find it on the web site any more. Speed is very important for us mean complete restoring as fast as possible. We are on SQL 2012 and SQL 2008 R2.We are currently using NETAPP Technology and I have Redgate Backup Tool but I am mainly looking for fast Restore Process.
I need to create a automation job for 2005 analysis services database to backup a database every night . i dont have sql server agent to create a job. I was told about a method to create a batch file and than use ssis or something similar to execute the job.
can anyone please help me out in guiding me with proper documentation to perform this procedure so that i can create a automation job without the help of sql server agent to create a backup job every night for anaylysis services 2005 database ......analysis services 2005 only
Data got deleted on Friday evening, need to have database restored to FRiday afternoon and also some data has been entered on Monday, which needs to be there.
I should restore a SQL Server 2005 Database from backup. The backup contains three files, named user.bak0, user.bak1 and user.bak2.
How is the syntax of the restore filelistonly and the restore database ... ?
I usualy write restore filelistonly from disk = 'path and filenam.bak' restore database. zy from disk = 'path and filename.bak' with replace, move..... move....
This works but I cannot use it with a splitted backup file. The files are much too big to put together to one file.
I neglected to backup the transaction log as part of the process of backing up the database. Now i only have the backup file for the database and no transaction log backup. When i try to do a restore on the database, i get the error on a "tail log missing" message (which i'm assuming is that it's looking for the t-log backup?).
Is it possible to restore or even restore to a new database? I'm only looking to retreive data from 2 tables within the backup file.
One of our database came to Restoring mode. I suddenly stop my SQL service and Copied only MDF files again Started SQL service ,unexpectedly i dropped the Database. Now i cant able to attach the database only with my MDF file.
I tried below Scripts. All scripts shows same error.
EXEC sp_attach_single_file_db @dbname='PhoenixPolice', @physname=N'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVERMSSQLPhoenixPolice.mdf' GO CREATE DATABASE PhoenixPolice ON Â Â (NAME = N'PhoenixPolice', Â Â FILENAME = N'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVERMSSQLPhoenixPolice.mdf') FOR ATTACH_REBUILD_LOG GO CREATE DATABASE phoenixPolice ON (FILENAME = N'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVERMSSQLPhoenixPolice.mdf') FOR ATTACH
All scripts shows below error
File activation failure. The physical file name "F:Microsoft SQL ServerMSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVERMSSQLDATAPhoenixPolice_1.ldf" may be incorrect.
The log cannot be rebuilt because there were open transactions/users when the database was shutdown, no checkpoint occurred to the database, or the database was read-only. This error could occur if the transaction log file was manually deleted or lost due to a hardware or environment failure.

I am using SQL Server Management Studio 12 to try to restore a backup to a new database. I know I have done this before, but cannot seem to make it happen now. Her is what I have.
Backup file is "C:TempInProcessInspection_DataSQL_backup_2015_02_23_000012_4551393.bak"Â and it is for sure there.Â
This came from a customer of mine.I launch SQL Server Management Studio 12 and log in as SA. I right click on Databases and chose Restore Database. I choose Device then file then Add and try to browse the the named location.Â
When I get there, regardless if I choose All files or Bak, I see no files.I tried to upload an image of the "Upload Backup File" dialog, but MSDN would let it happen. When I get to the c:temp folder, no files appear in the window.
i have  .bak file  downloaded from internet , and i also have istalled  sql server  2012.my problem that i can not restore  this  .bak file and get this error massage :
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The operating system returned the error '5(Access is denied.)' while attempting 'RestoreContainer::ValidateTargetForCreation' on 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVERMSSQLDATASRO_VT_SHARD.mdf'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.SmoExtended) - .bak file  version  = 661  10  50  1600 = sql server  2008R - my sql version   = Microsoft SQL Server 2012 - 11.0.2100.60 (Intel X86)
I have 5 TB of data in production and my development team requested to restore only last month data(<=500 MB ) in staging server and last 2 months data in pre production.
Our application team make design changes of the database in their development server and asks me to restore the bak file from the development server into the production server with replace command. The database in the production server is connected to the application server and so when I try to restore the database error message comes that the database is in use.
So first I find out the sessions with the logins who is the user in the database with sys.dm_exec_sessions joined with sys.dm_exec_requests and then kill the sessions. And after that it is possible to restore. But many times when I kill the session and try to restore in between new sessions comes into effect which are generated from the web server and many times I have to resubmit the query in the dmv's and find the sessions and kill it again and again before restore can be done. Is there any correct method to restore an active database which is being accessed by the application from a web server with out stopping the web server?
how to restore database backups with different recovery fork. I have 1-full backup 2-diff backups and 10-tran backups. My prod database in mirror, so after error, switched to mirror with "allow_data_loss" option. And now I have full and diff backup with one recovery fork GUID and other backups with another GUID.So the question is, how to restore all this backups if in middle of restoration will be different recovery fork.Tryed to restore log backups with new fork guid and got error:This backup set cannot be applied because it is on a recovery path that is inconsistent with the database. The recovery path is the sequence of data and log backups that have brought the database to a particular recovery point. Find a compatible backup to restore, or restore the rest of the database to match a recovery point within this backup set, which will restore the database to a different point in time.
We have a production 2012 R2 SQL server that is not part of a domain. I have a database called CSSDC. I need to backup this database and make the BAK file available to a user on a different SQL server. Security is a concern. In order for this user to restore the database, they will have to be in the fixed server role sysadmins. I know I am going to have to use the Move with replace for the filegroups for the restore. Once the database is restored it will have to be altered to read-only. I would also like to remove the existing security and only have this new user access the read-only database.
I am restoring a backup of sql server 2005 which I inherited on to sql server 2012 and is in a recovery pending state and the reason why is, this is a backup from a different domain and does not have the logins from the legacy domain, looks like its some access issue as its not being able to find the necessary login on sql server 2012.
I have three instances running on my sql 2008 r2 enterprise.I have taken full backup of one database from default instance.I login both the instances thru sa account. Now when I try to restore that backup on another instance it gives me the following error.... what can be done to restore bakup in another instance ...
