DB Engine :: Server 2012 8060 Row Length Limit

SQL Server 2012.If I create a table with 307 columns, all of type nvarchar(50), it works. If I add another column of type nvarchar(50), it works but I get a warning:
Warning: The table "RowSizeError" has been created, but its maximum row size exceeds the allowed maximum of 8060 bytes. INSERT or UPDATE to this table will fail if the resulting row exceeds the size limit.
 307 x 50 = 15350 and 308 x 50 = 15400. why I get the warning below with 308 columns but not with 307?

Hi All,I have created a table in sql server 2000 where at the time of creatingit, the row size excced 8K. I understand why I get the warning below:The table 'tbl_detail' has been created but its maximum row size(12367) exceeds the maximum number of bytes per row (8060). INSERT orUPDATE of a row in this table will fail if the resulting row lengthexceeds 8060 bytes.However, when I call a stored procedure from my ASP Code, which returnsme this warning, my ASP page displays the warning and does not move tothe next line.What can I do not to get this warning? How do I turn off warningmessages? I tried to wrap my stored procedure call code within SETNOCOUNT ON and SET NOCOUNT OFF but that didn't help.Any help would be really appreciated,Thanks,Boris

I thought I understand the notion in the Title until I ran the query below. This query inserts a 5000 byte value into two columns in the same record and sql (2008) doesn't complain.Â

create table table_1(
[mychar1] [varchar](8000) NULL,
[mychar2] [varchar](8000) NULL
)
insert into table_1 ( mychar1, mychar2)
values (replicate('a', 5000) , replicate('b', 5000))

I just noticed that using  Replicate ('a', 50000) doesn't cause an issue either. I'll be reviewing the replicate documentation too.

I€™m trying to create a VERY wide table, with 1,000 columns of type varchar(MAX), nullable.
The CREATE TABLE statement (both in SQL 2005 & 2008), gives the following warning:
Warning: The table "WIDE_TABLE" has been created, but its maximum row size exceeds the allowed maximum of 8060 bytes. INSERT or UPDATE to this table will fail if the resulting row exceeds the size limit.
When I insert data into the table, filling all columns with small, 10-byte string values, I get the following error:
Msg 50000, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_pivot, Line 118
Cannot create a row of size 15034 which is greater than the allowable maximum of 8060.
I€™d like to verify this observation: each row is created with 2000 bytes of offset data (2 byte * 1000 columns), 125 bytes for null bitmap (1000 columns / 8 bits) and some more €œwasted€? row information. This leaves less than 6K for the data itself. But since not all columns can fit within the page, forwarding pointers in the row need to be created, 24 byte per column, which very quickly add up to more than 8K, thus the error. So the 8K limit is met for much less columns than the max 1024 column restriction.
Furthermore, in SQL 2008, SPARSE columns will not solve the problem (maybe save some €œmetadata€? space in case the columns are null, but if not, I€™m with the same problem again, or even worse, since now each value takes more storage space. The max 30,000 columns in 2008 is only for cases where the column values are really sparse€¦
Is this the right observation? if so, is there a workaround besides splitting to multiple tables?

I'm dynamically attaching some files to an email. I'm using an expression to build something similar to this:

BOL says to use a pipe delimiter to send multiple attachments. This works if I only have a couple of files. Once I get a few more attachments built in the expression builder I get a truncation error. If I build the whole expression in notepad and past it into the property window it also gets truncated. I see in the MSDN library that some expressions may be limited to 4000 bytes. I'm nowhere near that. Maybe a thousand bytes at most.
Question 1: Does anyone know if certain expressions have smaller byte limits?
Question 2: Is there a smaller byte limit for the file attachment value?
Question 3: Is there way I could build this string outside of the file attachment property and assign it to a variable and then use this variable in the file attachment property?

I have a simple SP that returns 2 columns with 4 inner joins, results are about 100 odd rows max, nothing complicated. When I run the SP via SSMS it works fine, as soon as this is run via an application server the SP fails to complete with the error :
Internal error: An expression services limit has been reached. Please look for potentially complex expressions in your query, and try to simplify them.
We are not getting anywhere near the expression limit so I cannot understand why we are suddenly receiving this error. 2 weeks ago this query was running fine, no updates have been rolled out to the SQL database servers or application servers but the error is suddenly appearing on both prod and dev environments.

We have a new set up on VM to run an application running 24*7 (migrated from SQL server 2008R2) with below configs:
1. OS- Windows server 2012 Standard 64 bit hosted on Virtual Machine
2. Memory 16 GB and Cores =4 with 2.4GhZ processor
3. SQL server 2012 SP2 , 64 bit Standard edition.
4. Total size of databases as of now 15 GB with biggest being 5 GB.
How should i go around in setting the MAX and MIN server memory settings. I have this set up for many of SQL 2005 and 2008R2 servers, but for 2012 i heard that things has slightly changed.Â
How should i start analyzing and setting the right value of this MAX and MIN?

I am working on a migration project and need to derive the total length of the columns for a particular table. I have the following query designed for the same:
select
t.name,
sum(c.max_length)
from sys.all_columns c
join sys.all_objects t
on t.object_id = c.object_id
where t.name='test_1'
group by t.name
;
This query gives me correct results except for data types varchar(max), nvarchar and xml for which the max_length is stored as -1 which causes my results to be incorrect when summed up. Is there any other way to find out the maximum data length for such type of columns?
Here is my table DDL:

[COL_1] [bigint] NULL,
[COL_2] [bit] NULL,

I was looking for a little insight on Resource Governor. I have a request from my manager to limit the resources a certain third party's DB can use on our system. We allow them to keep a DB on our SQL 2012 server so they can run query's to compare data to their server without linking the two machines.
I was looking into resource manager to perhaps accomplish this task but I'm not real familiar with it. If Resource governor can be used to only allow a DB named UserDB1 to use only 1GB or Memory at any one time?
Or perhaps there is another way aside from Resource governor?

I've read here at [URL] that with 32 bit it's recommended to only have 10 database mirrors per instance.  However, is there a limit for 64 bit SQL Server 2012?
We're having a problem where we have about 300+ databases and now any new db's we add are timing out when it comes to setting up mirroring and am wondering if this is limited by the instance.

For those of you who would like to reference my exact issue, I'm dealing with the RSExecution SSIS package at the "Update Parameters" data flow task, at the Script Component.
The script tries to split parameter data into name and value. Unfortunately, I have several reports that are passing parameters that are very large. One example has over 65,000 characters all in the normal "¶mname=value&parm2=value..." format.
The code in the script works fine until it gets to one of these very large parameter sets. I have figured out what is causing the issue. Here's some code:
Dim paramBlob as Byte()
paramBlob = Row.BlobColumn.GetBlobData(0, Row.BlobColumn.Length)
The second parameter of the .GetBlobData function takes an INTEGER as its count! Therefore, no matter what kind of datatype I pass to the string that the script will later split, it will be limited to 32767 characters.
THIS IS A PROBLEM!!!
Does anyone know a workaround for this issue? I need all of the parameter data to be reported, and I would hate to have to skip over rows like this. Also, if I'm missing something, please fill me in!

I am trying to narrow down this problem. Basically, I added 3 columns to my article table. It holds the article id, article text, author and so on. I tested my program before adding the additional field to the program. The program works fine and I can add an article, and edit the same article even though it skips over the 3 new fields in the database. It just puts nulls into those columns.So, now I have added one of the column names I added in the database to the code. I changed my businesslogic article.vb code and the addarticle.aspx, as well as the New article area in the addartivle.aspx.vb page. The form now has an additional textbox field for the ShortDesc which is a short description of the article. This is the problem now: The command parameters.length is 9 and there are 10 parameter values. Right in the middle of the 10 values is the #4 value which I inserted into the code. It says Nothing when I hover my mouse over the code after my program throws the exception in 17 below. Why is command parameters.length set to 9 instead of 10? Why isn't it reading the information for value 4 like all the other values and placing it's value there and calculating 10 instead of 9? Where are these set in the program? This is a question that I have not had an opportunity to test. Was wanting to know if anyone in the SQl world knows the answer. In SQL 2K and 2005 your rolls are limited to 8060 bytes without using varchar(MAX). My question is do you have to specify varchar(max) before your roll can exceed 8060 or does SQL 2005 exceed without specifing varchar(Max). Also does SQL 2005 expand it across multiple pages automatically. Please assist if you can.

I am getting following error during executing a insert query.
Error Message : Cannot create a worktable row larger than allowable maximum.
Resubmit your query with the ROBUST PLAN hint.
1. The max rowsize for a table in SQL Server 2000 is 8060 characters.
2. The query was working fine for data below the limit, it failed
for the data above the limit.
3. I had tested the UPDATE query with option (ROBUST PLAN ), but it didn€™t work.

Hello,
I have a table in SQL Server 2000 which has few triggers. When I try to update a record in that table, I get following message:
Warning: The table '[TABLE_NAME]' has been created but its maximum row size (17275) exceeds the maximum number of bytes per row (8060). INSERT or UPDATE of a row in this table will fail if the resulting row length exceeds 8060 bytes.
where the data I am updating is well less than the field limit. The triggers are stored in syscomments table and when I dropped these triggers, the update statements were executed without this message. Is there anyway I can change the data type of field text in syscomments from nvarchar to ntext?

A simple alter statement to populate a column is giving the error below.
UPDATE AM_PROFILE_4101_0 SET _92284 = CONVERT(varchar(1000),fv.varcharValue)
FROM AM_PROFILE_4101_0 pt
INNER JOIN cyfield_value fv ON fv.fieldID = 92284 AND pt.AM_PROFILE_ID = fv.AMid
Cannot create a row of size 8125 which is greater than the allowable maximum of 8060.
The table as many varchar(max) columns such as _92284, and many are populated with around 1000 bytes of data. Everything I'm reading tells me SQL 2005 supports large row sizes. But why is this error still coming up.
Other usage info: These numbered columns (i.e. _92284) are dropped, added, and repopulated with data every night.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

In SQL Server Management Studio, it is possible to do the following:
a) In Object Explorer, connect to a particular SQL Server Database Engine, let's call it X.
b) Use that connection to generate many SQL queries, connected to X, in the right-hand pane.
c) In Object Explorer, connect to a particular SQL Server Database Engine, let's call it Y.
d) Use that connection to generate many SQL queries, connected to Y, in the right-hand pane.
e) Close the connection to X, which was created in step (a), from within Object Explorer.
In the right-hand pane, I am now left with a bunch of queries connected to X, and a similar bunch of queries connected to Y. Any quick way to shut all the queries connected to X, but none of the queries connected to Y?
This question can assume real practical importance if server X is a Live Production Server, and server Y is a Test Server, and my next job of the day is to run a change script against server Y....
I have looked for an option in Management Studio to "Close all queries connected to Server X", but haven't found one.
