Service Stop/start/restart Questions 2005 SP2

Oct 15, 2007

A few service stop/start/restart questions on SQL Server 2005 SP2, whichI'll call SQLS.It looks as if there are *potentially* 6 ways to start/stop SQLSServices like the engine itself, integration services, reportingservice, Agent..-SQLS Configuration Manager-SQLS Surface Area Configuration (for Services and Connections)-Mgmt Studio Local (on server)-Mgmt Studio Remote (on client)-Windows Control Panel->Admin Tools->Services-Command Prompt (ala net start MSSQLSERVER)By policy, I am /not/ Administrator on the server. But I am SysAdminrole in SQLS. I have had various levels of success starting/stoppingservices in the ways listed above. In some I get Access denied, and inothers I get no msg and it simply doesn't work.Is there some special non-Admin OS group I need to be in to start/stopservices? Is this handled differently in the different interfaceslisted above?It seems like my best success for starting/stopping the engine and Agentis in /local/ Mgmt Studio, but /not/ remote Mgmt Studio - the optionsare greyed out on a remote client. Is this by design? Is it a SQLSbug?I'm sure I'm not the only SQLS DBA who does not have Admin rights on hisserver who wants to start/stop services. Generally speaking, how isthis intended to work?Any help appreciated.Allen JantzenA freshly minted DQLS DBA

Reporting Services :: ReportViewer 10.0 - Pressing Browser Back Button

Jan 31, 2011

We recently upgraded from ReportViewer 9.0 to 10.0 Control in our ASP.NET application, and face some strange issues after the upgrade. When we press the Back button to go to a page that was rendering a report with one or more single-select drop down lists, the selected index in the drop down is reduced by 1, and the report doesn't render until I press "View Report". I verified that exact same setup works well with ReportViewer 9.0.

Execution ID Is Lost After Pressing The Back Button (drill-through Reports)

Dec 12, 2006

Hi there,

I'm using the reportviewer control to display a drill-through serverreport. Here is the code in my code-behind file:

Protected Sub Page_Init(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Init

Dim strReportPath As String = "/Public Reports/adfront/dealermodel/myreportname"

Dim paramUniqueID As New ReportParameter()

If Not Page.IsPostBack And Me.ReportViewer1.ServerReport.IsDrillthroughReport = False Then

Session("uniqueid") = Request.QueryString("uniqueid").ToString

'Set the report server URL and report path

Me.ReportViewer1.ServerReport.ReportServerUrl = New Uri("http://localhost/reportserver")

Me.ReportViewer1.ServerReport.ReportPath = strReportPath

Me.ReportViewer1.SizeToReportContent = True

Me.ReportViewer1.AsyncRendering = False

Me.ReportViewer1.ShowBackButton = True

Me.ReportViewer1.ShowFindControls = False

Me.ReportViewer1.ShowPageNavigationControls = False

Me.ReportViewer1.ShowParameterPrompts = False

Me.ReportViewer1.ShowPromptAreaButton = False

Me.ReportViewer1.ShowZoomControl = True

Me.ReportViewer1.ZoomMode = ZoomMode.FullPage

'Set the processing mode for the ReportViewer to Remote

Me.ReportViewer1.ProcessingMode = ProcessingMode.Remote

'Set the report parameters for the report

paramUniqueID.Name = "uniqueid"

paramUniqueID.Values.Add(Session("uniqueid"))

Dim parameters() As ReportParameter = {paramUniqueID}

Me.ReportViewer1.ServerReport.SetParameters(parameters)

End If

Me.ReportViewer1.ServerReport.Refresh()

End Sub

Protected Sub ReportViewer1_Drillthrough(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As Microsoft.Reporting.WebForms.DrillthroughEventArgs) Handles ReportViewer1.Drillthrough

While (Me.ReportViewer1.ServerReport.IsDrillthroughReport)

Me.ReportViewer1.PerformBack()

End While

'Me.ReportViewer1.ServerReport.ReportPath = e.ReportPath

'Me.ReportViewer1.ServerReport.GetParameters()

Me.Label1.Text = Me.ReportViewer1.ServerReport.ReportPath

End Sub

When I drill-through the report and hit the (browser) back button and try to drill-trough again I get the following error:

The path of the item "(null)" is not valid. The path must be less than 260 characters long and must start with slash. Other restrictions apply. (rsInvalidItemPath)

When I hit back again and try to export the report to eg. PDF, I get this error:

Is It Neccesary To Restart Sql Server Engine After Modifying A Noise Word List?

Sep 26, 2007

Hello all,
We are using sql server 2005 for full text searching.

I removed some of the words in the noise word file (noiseENU.txt) and rebuilt the catalog. However i find that the changes made to the noise file do not reflect immediately. I had to restart sql server engine before my queries returned results according to the updated noise list. Is there a workaround for this ( wherein there isnt the neccesity of restarting sql server engine....this is becoming a problem on live environments as i cannot restart the server when needed)?

Thanks in advance,
Harish

The odd thing is that after a sql service restart we couldnt connect at all on the SQL port. We were only able to re-connect after rebooting the actuall box. Is there anything that can be done about this? Its strting to look like a network related problem instead of SQL

Server Service Is Getting Stopped Even After Manual Restart

Jan 27, 2015

I have got the error “a network related or instance specific error occurred sql server 2012 “.I have enabled tcp/ip, restarted the services. The sql server service is getting stopped even after the manual restart. I have checked in event viewer and I noticed a error. Here is the error...The log scan number (43:456:1) passed to log scan in database ‘model’ is not valid. This error may indicate data corruption or that the log file (.ldf) does not match the data file (.mdf). If this error occurred during replication, re-create the publication.

Service Dependency On SQL Server And Restart/Restore

Jun 26, 2007

I have a service that depends on SQL Server service. Basically we make sure that our service only starts after SQL server service started. Unfortunately this dependency does not ensure that database is available.

Basically I observed in Application log that SQL server reports that it started to listen on a port. And then I see that recovery process started. As I understand SQL server is not available while database is in the recovery state.

Note: I might have not used a correct terminology to describe SQL server recovery process as I don't have access to Application log with the exact message at the moment. I can verify the message if necessary.

Because SQL server service is started our service starts and attempts to connect to the database. Service fails to connect to database, because of the restoration process. Once restoration is done service connects successfully.

I observed that restoration process starts every time machine is rebooted. It only takes a few minutes to run, but it is enough to generate a number of error messages in event log about failed SQL connections.

My first question is: Is it normal for database to enter into recovery state every time machine is rebooted?

My second question is: If it is a normal operation, is there any way to detect that SQL server is truly available, so our code does not have to try retry establishing connection many times

Where's The Start Button?

Jan 30, 2008

I just installed and registered SQL Server Express but I don't see any shortcuts or Start -> Programs links. I found the new folder it created C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2 and I tried to run this file:

C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.2MSSQLBinnsqlservr.exe

Nothing happens. Nada. Do I have to restart my computer?

PS: Is there a QuickStart tutorial on using its Reporting Services?

Start Debug Button Loading All Packages

Oct 30, 2006

I have a project with 48 packages. When I press the green button for Start Debug, it seems like Integration Svcs. is re-loading or some type of validation occurs (screen flashes with each package being highlighted in solution manager) for all packages in the project before executing the specific package.

Also, If I close all the packages except one that is to be executed and press the green start debug button, all the packages are loaded before executing the specific package. There is always a delay before the actual package is executed when using the green start debug button.

If I right click on the specific package in solution manager and execute it, the package is executed immeadiately without any delay.

I did not have this issue until I tried to build and deploy the package.

Thanks.

I successfully installed SQL Server 2005 and then used the ALTER DATATBASE statement to move around my data and log files for Model, MSDB and TEMPDB. I stopped SQL SERVER Services and physically moved the files to their new locations.. now the service won't start? I get this in the SQL Server ERROLOG:

I can log on to the Server with the account that starts the services and open the .mdf and .ldf files in Notepad.. not sure what's going on.. I then gave the Domain Account that starts the Services Full Control on each of the volumes that I moved the files to.. I checked down to the file level to make sure that the permissions propogated.. the service still won't start.. can someone help?

I recently installed SQL Server 7.0 on my desktop workstation. I has been working great until yesterday when services wouldn't start. The Service Manager gave me a message "An error 1069 - (The service did not start due to a logon failure.) occurred while performing this service operation on the MSSQLServer service." It appears to be a permission problem, but my profile hasn't changed, I have admin rights on my workstation. Can anybody help?

The SQL Server Service Failed To Start

Jun 30, 2006

I have mentioned this problem before but it has not been resolved. I am installing MS SQL Server Express Advanced i.e. using SQLEXPR_ADV.EXE.

During the initial checks, i get a warning about hardware requirements and I have read the posts about the install failing if the CPU does not support prefetching but I am running a P4 3.0GHz (twin core) CPU with 512MB RAM on Windows XP Pro SP2.

The installation fails at SQL Server Database Services during "Configuring Microsoft SQL Server":

"Starting SQL Service: MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS"

If I click the Retry button, the system goes away and then comes back with the same message. If I click cancel, various roll-back actions are performed and the install fails

Is this the default name for the SQL Server instance ? I thought it would be named after my machine name i.e. GLKD239680SQLExpress ?

Any ideas anyone ? I have not had much luck with installing this despite 2 PC rebuilds and scanning the forums for solutions.... I can post any log files if needed

Thanks

MSDASQL Error Requires SQL Service Restart

May 17, 2006

I am having trouble with a linked server using MSDASQL. I'm connecting to a PostgreSQL database and pulling over data. This process has been working fine.

In trying to pull data from a different client database (same schema), I received an error that the MSDASQL couldn't read the column names.

The actual problem I want help on is that after this happens, I am no longer able to make valid connections to any of my Linked Servers using MSDASQL. The only way I can get my other linked servers to work again is to restart the SQL Service. Usually this is impossible for me to do because of the number of active users.

Two questions:

1) Is there another way to restart a more targeted service or sub-set to reset MSDASQL connections, and clear out my problem?

2) Any idea why I'm getting this error connecting to PostgreSQL on a large dataset when it worked fine for a small dataset using the same linked server? "The provider reported an unexpected catastrophic failure."

Any help is appreciated.

SQL Express Failed Login && Service Restart

Jan 9, 2007

Every so often I get an error when I pull up an ASP.NET 2.0 site using
SQL Express. It tells me that the login failed. If I go
into the server's administrative tools > services and restart SQL
Express and then refresh the site, it works just fine. Is this
some sort of bug or memory issue? Does the application need to
connect every so often or end up falling out somewhere?

Thanks

SQL Server Service Failed To Start During Setup!

Aug 30, 2006

I had a strange experience with MS SQL Server 2005 Express Edition installation, I am running a P4 3G Processor, 1 GB of RAM, Windows XP SP2, 300 GB HDD (SATA if it matters at all :) ) And using Visual Studio Pro 2005.

I have managed to install the SQL Express with no hassle at all, then had to format my HDD, and start from scratch, to make a new home for my VS 2005 Pro (The 300 GB HDD) And managed to install the SQL Express as part of the VS 2005 without any problems, after using it for 3 months now, I've started a new project in VS 2005, and tried to add a new SQL DB, but it had failed for several times.

I€™ve decided that the files got corrupted for some reason and tried to reinstall the MS SQL 2005 using the original SQL Express installation file I've used before, but without joy.

I thought that it is conflicting with some new MS Update patch and downloaded the latest SQL Express advanced installation, but that did not fix the problem either.

The message I'm getting every time I attempt the installation is" SQL Server service failed to start" with all the bla bla about the online books and whatever useless stuff to learn how to start the service manually.

I have uninstalled the whole thing, including VS 2005, .NET Framework, and any registry trace of the SQL Server installation, but again all in vain.

Finally, some smart wizard suggested in one of the threads that if your computer is not part of a domain, you should run the SQL service as a local service, using the advanced option during the first step of the setup.

And guess what! It worked!!!!
My Question is why did it work during the first two installations, without me fiddling with the advanced installation feature?
My computer was and still is, not part of any domain, my hardware did not change at all, and I had the installation failing with or without any software installed!
