SQL Server 2005 - Stack Dump

Oct 24, 2007

We are using SQL Server 2005 SP2 (32 bit) Clustered, and our server crashed twice within the last week. Has anyone experienced problems with the scheduler crashing SQL Server?

Using 'dbghelp.dll' version '4.0.5'

CheckDB Stack Dump And Reports Corrupt Sys.sysobjvalues Only When Read_only

Apr 9, 2008

Hi, I've been getting stack dumps and reports of corruption in sys.sysobjvalues in a series of different read_only databases. Each time the CheckDB runs over the set of databases it reports exactly the same errors (listed below) in a subset of databases, but only ever in the read_only databases, not the read_write ones on the drive.

I've got three 2TB drives allocated to the cluster and the errors are ONLY ever happening on one of the drives (lets call it N: ), however under the covers all three drives are hosted on a virtualised SAN (EVA8000) on the same spindles so I'm a bit confused about why we're getting the errors. Thinking that perhaps there was a problem with cabling/HBA, etc I failed the instance to another node at another site which completely eliminates all hardware except the disks, yet the problem still happens. I've yet to failover to the mirrored set of disks in another EVA cabinet to test there, but can't take the outage hit just yet.

I can run the checkdb multiple times and get exactly the same error, yet if I set the DB to read_write then the corruption and stack dumps magically go away - even after I set db back to read_only - after I cycle SQL server then the whole sequence will start again - corruption while read_only and then no corruption once altered to read_write and after. If I restore a backup of the database taken either before or after the corruption was first reported then the restored DB checks out fine. Of course I can restore from backups but I've got 2TBs worth of databases to restore and I don't want to do that until I *KNOW* exactly what the cause is.

Anyone got any good ideas what may be happening?

DB Engine :: Keeping Service Up While Taking Drive Offline

Sep 2, 2015

I have clustered instance with two (2) data drives on it. Drive J has around 50 databases on it and drive K has about 15. One of the system administrators was trying to increase the size on K by 20 GB and he instead increased it by 200. Now he needs to take the accidental 180 GB back but the drive will need to come offline briefly. Is it possible to take the K drive offline, along with the databases whose data files resides on it, without taking the whole instance down?

Jul 27, 2000

Hi Everybody,

I hv worked in 6.5. There we take backup through the command 'Dump Database'(e.g---> "Dump database master to masdump WITH INIT." ). As for as I know, in 7.0 we are taking backup using the command "Backup Database". Is it possible to use "Dump Database" command in 7.0.

Can anyone give explanation on that please.

thanks in advance

BackUp/Dump Hang Up?

Jul 13, 1998

Hi,
excuse me if this problem has been discussed before!

We handle the addmittance in our university with IIS 4.0 and MS SQL Server 6.5 ... a group of 12 operators keep the server busy entering the information about students...
I run backup of the hole database on every 1 hour in order to have a recent copy of the date base in case the disk fail (we had bad luck with a quantum HDD few weeks ago).
The problems begun when the data base got to 18 MEGs and at about 32 connections to the SQL server when the dump finish the server goes out...

Anyone heard about this before and how to handle it?
Yours truly WarJo

PS: Sorry for my englsih... not good enought

Transaction Log Dump After Differential Backup

Jan 23, 2008

I am doing a differential backup every night with t-log backups every 15 mins. The differential backup occurs at 3:00a and is about 300 MB. The very next t-log backup at 3:15a is also about 300 MB instead of the usual 1 - 2 MB. Why is this and how can I avoid it? Is this just how SQL Server works? Do I have to do a full backup every night instead? Thanks in advance for your help.

SQL Backup Taking Too Long!!!

Nov 17, 2007

Hi All

I am having a serious problem which I need some help with regarding our SQL Server backup.

Basically it has started to take ages (as in 48hrs +), when it should only take about 4 hrs. The database is only 380GB and up until monday our backups have not been completing. When I check the activity monitor I have seen that the 'BACKUP DATABASE' process is set to suspended with a huge wait time and the wait type is ASYNC_IO_COMPLETION.

I am not sure how to solve this, but I am going to have to!

So if anyone has any ideas please help me! If you need any othe info please let me know.

Thanks

Gopher

Taking Backup Of All User Database

Jul 3, 2013

In order to take automated backup of all user databases below is the query. This query will eliminate use of manual backups for user databases, in order to fully automate this just create a SQL Agent job and write this query in the job and forget about taking any manual DB backups.

DECLARE @name VARCHAR(50) -- database name
DECLARE @path VARCHAR(256) -- path for backup files
DECLARE @fileName VARCHAR(256) -- filename for backup
DECLARE @fileDate VARCHAR(20) -- used for file name
SET @path = 'C:DB_BKPUP'

Backup Taking Longer Than Usaual On Sundays

Mar 13, 2008

Hi All,

My Full backups are taking longer than the usual time on sundays.
I know this has nothing to do with the SQl Server storage engine or Database engine.
i hvae checked there are no jobs ruuning at this time..and this across all the servers sharing the SAN.

How can prove that some thing else is reponsible for this Behvaior and not SQL server.

are there any counters (perfmon) or tools or some sniffers which can tell me what is causing this.

please help.

Thanks in advance.

Error While Taking Network Backup On SQL 2005

Feb 12, 2008

Hi,

I have SQL 2005 running on OS 2003. I am trying to take backup on a network drive (NAS box).

I have logged into the OS2003 machine as ADSadministrator and the same for SQL 2005. I have given full control to ADSadministrator on the network drive of the NAS box.

When I try to take a backup, I get the following error :

Operating system error = 5(Access is denied)

Any idea what is wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Transaction Log Backup Taking A Long Time

Mar 30, 2007

Hello,

I'm trying to figure out why my transaction log backup is taking up to an hour to complete. I started off with a full recovery model with a Full database back up every Sunday, differential backups every Tuesday/Thursday and log backups every 5 minutes. I would have thought that the log file backups would execute much quicker because I'm backing them up more often.

Here is my backup statement, I'm hoping I've got a wrong option that you can point out to me:

BACKUP LOG [xxxx] TO [LogFilexxxxBackups] WITH NOINIT , NOUNLOAD , NAME = N'xxxx log backup', SKIP , STATS = 10, NOFORMAT

DB Engine :: Receive Backup Failed For Server

Oct 6, 2015

I have a VM with Windows Server 2012 and SQL 2014 installed.  Some things about the VM:  Using VMware Workstation 11.  Created with 160 GB hard disk and 4G memory (that's all we could do when needing to run multiple VMs from the box we're using).  I am able to get to the internet and to our network but the internet connection tells me that there is no internet access and we can't seem to fix it.When I attempt to create a backup of one of my DBs, I receive the attached error.  No other backup has been created for this particular DB so it would not need to overwrite anything.  This is an issue for all of the DBs that are in the SQL Server and not just an isolated DB.

We ran DBCC CHECKDB against the DB and no errors were returned.A bit about the DBs:  Our software creates a number of empty DBs upon install.  For testing purposes we have DBs that are populated with data that we restore once the install is complete.  So our procedure is, once all services are shut down for our software and the SQL connection has been cut, we delete the DBs created during install and restore the DBs that will replace them. All of the DBs restored successfully so I don't understand why there would be an issue with backing them up.
