DB Engine :: Compressed Backup While Restoring Backup File

Sep 8, 2015

I got full backup on daily schedule its taking more space on Drive because each file has more than 25GB.I am using SLQ server 2008R2 so I'm looking to take the backup with compression instead of uncompressed Backup. What are the impacts of compressed backup. Is there any problems with compressed backup while restoring the backup file.

DB Engine :: Restoring A Backup Of Server

I am restoring a backup of sql server 2005 which I inherited on to sql server 2012 and is in a recovery pending state and the reason why is, this is a backup from a different domain and does not have the logins from the legacy domain, looks like its some access issue as its not being able to find the necessary login on sql server 2012.

Restoring The Backup File - URGENT PLEASE

Nov 28, 2000

Hi Everybody,

Our branch office in Europe has sent full 'backup' file of capacity 25GB.
I have to restore this backup to our database. Their database is 'Candidate'
and our database is 'client'. Both these databases have different logical
names and physical names.

The following Batch script only I hv executed,

RESTORE DATABASE Client
FROM DISK = 'd:dumppaw01dump.bak'
WITH MOVE 'candidatedata' TO 'e:mssqldataclient_data.mdf',
MOVE 'candidatelog' TO 'd:mssqllogclient_log.ldf',
REPLACE

Can anybody tell me, what I have executed above is correct or not. Now
restoration is going on for more than an hr. Still it is going on. Is there
any other way to restore this backup set very fastly.

Our server has got very good hardware setup. Good amount of hard disk space.
4GB RAM Memory. Running 4 processors. No other service is running apart from
SQL Server. Right now nobody is accessing the server.

How long it will take to restore this backupset?. This is urgent please.

Any help would be appreciated.

tks in advance,
Sri

Backup/Restore From/to Compressed Files

Apr 24, 2007

Hi everyone,

already tried this in other SQL forums, but maybe i have some luck here.

I need mainly to restore database backups from customers. They arrive in all kind of formats (zip, rar, gz). I'd like to be able to restore those directly from the compressed file, because i'm talking up to 7GB rar files which take a while to uncompress in a separate step.

I'm working for 6 years in R&D environments, but mostly on Linux/Oracle where this is an easy task using pipes, but i haven't found a sinlge web page, post or even script to do this with MSSQL. The VDI is not really what i'm looking for, so aren't backup software like SQLBackup, Litespeed etc. because i can't force the customer to use those.

Anybody any idea or even the same problem maybe with solution?

Thx.

DB Engine :: How To Restore From Current LDF Log File And Old BAK Backup File

Jun 11, 2015

My customer got a total hard drive failure. After sending it to drive recovery specialist we were able to recover the LDF log file (MyDB_0.LDF).But the MDF file was completely destroyed (MyDB.MDF).They have a good full backup from a month ago.

1) Installed SQL Server 2012 on a new PC
2) Created a new database of same name (MyDB) - with same MDF and LDF file names as original
3) Took the new database offline
4) deleted the MDF and LDF files of the new database
5) put "MyDB_0.LDF" in the place of the LDF file I just deleted
6) put the database back on-line
7) after hitting F5 to refresh databases - it shows "MyDB (Recovery Pending)"
8) tried to do Tail Log Backup with this command
BACKUP LOG [MyDB] TO DISK = N'C:BACKUPMyDB_TailLog.bak'
WITH NO_TRUNCATE

And I get this error...

Msg 3447, Level 16, State 1, Line 3
Could not activate or scan all of the log files for database 'MyDB'.

The sad thing is I know we can get this data back using ApexSQL-Log. I can see all the transactions since the last full backup in this program - so the log file is not damaged. But my client doesn't want to pay the $2000 fee for this software. There has to be a way to restore this data, without having to purchase a third party tool.

DB Engine :: Restore Backup File To Remote Server

Jul 8, 2015

I am working on a project for an SQL job. I am:

1.) Taking a database out of an availability group,
2.) Setting the recovery to simple,
3.) Shrinking the log file,
4.) Setting the recovery mode back to full,
5.) Then backing it up.

I need to restore the file to my secondary server with replace and non recovery mode. I am having trouble performing that call?  I have the code to reestablish the database to the availability group if I can get the restore feature working.

Trying To Apply A Non-compressed Snapshot When It Is Compressed In A Cab File

Jul 19, 2007

Noticed weird activity today with pull merge.

When your snapshot is set to be delivered via ftp and compressed in a cab file. If you add a new article to your publication and re-run the snapshot the agent will be unable to pull the snapshot down as it for some reason doesnt think its compressed. It is failing to find the scripts it needs inside the cab file despite the cab file existing in the correct location.

How To Restore A Database From Backup With A Splitted Backup File

Apr 1, 2008

I should restore a SQL Server 2005 Database from backup. The backup contains three files, named user.bak0, user.bak1 and user.bak2.

How is the syntax of the restore filelistonly and the restore database ... ?

I usualy write
restore filelistonly from disk = 'path and filenam.bak'
restore database. zy
from disk = 'path and filename.bak'
with replace,
move.....
move....

This works but I cannot use it with a splitted backup file. The files are much too big to put together to one file.

Thanks in advance for any help.

BACKUP LOG Cannot Be Performed Because There Is No Current Database Backup. BACKUP LOG Is Terminating Abnormally.

Jan 31, 2008

Hi there

I'm getting this message on my third automated backup of the transaction logs of the day. Both databases are in full recovery mode, both successfully backed up at 01.00. The transaction logs backed up perfectly happily at 01:30 and 05:30, but failed at 09:30.

The only difference between 05:30 and 09:30's backups is that the log files were shrunk at 08:15 (the databases in question are the ones that sit under ILM2007, and keeping the log files small keeps the system running better).

Is it possible that shrinking the log files causes the database to think that there hasn't been a full database backup?

Thanks

Jane

I am using SQL 7 for backkup and restore. The backup device backs up to disk on the servers. What I am doing wrong?

Restoring Backup On New Machine

Jan 4, 2007

Hi all,

My first post on these forums and I'm hoping someone can please help me before I pull all of my hair out.

I'm currently working on the redevelopment of a website. The old one was written in ASP and we're going to totally redo the whole thing. As a lot of the content was dynamic I want to fire up the old site on my laptop to browse and pull content from. I have a backup of the entire website which I have put under a fresh IIS install. I also have a backup of the MSSQL database. I have restored this to the local machine and can view it using the SQL Server Management Studio. The problem is that I think I am having lots of trouble synching the users/permissions for it. We don't have a backup of the Master databases so I am stuck with what I can extract from the site backup and web code.

Trying to load the old index.asp I get either of these error messages quote:'Login failed for user 'Username'. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection' or 'SQL Server does not exist or access denied.' depending on how I've played with the user permissions.

Please can someone help me sort this out so that the old ASP webpages can access the DB again? I'm used to mySQL/PHP so am struggling a bit to get this going.

-Edit-
Bit more info. Here are the connection details the site uses within an ASP page.
<%
dim Conn

'---------------------Create connection------------------------------------------------------
Set Conn = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
Conn.Open "Driver={SQL Server};Server=MYSERVER;Database=dbTest;uid=dbTestUser;pwd=testpasssql"

%>
