DB Engine :: Restoring Data Only
Oct 6, 2015
We are running 2014 enterprise. Have there been any features added to sql server that ease the challenge of restoring only data? I often find myself creating separate databases so that a restore of a db's data doesnt also restore procs and functions and vice versa.Â

I am restoring a backup of sql server 2005 which I inherited on to sql server 2012 and is in a recovery pending state and the reason why is, this is a backup from a different domain and does not have the logins from the legacy domain, looks like its some access issue as its not being able to find the necessary login on sql server 2012.

Suddenly one day I found some corruptions have occurred in my SQL Server 2012 installation. Because my 'msdb' has been marked SUSPECT/CORRUPT; hence no new work can be done as per my schedules.
I have gone about trying to repair it. I followed this article here: [URL] [the region 'Create new MSDB Database'].
I am facing some sizeable difficulties in doing this on my own. Steps 1. & 2. I have done. I am now stuck at step no. 3.My instance name is SQLEXPRESS. So, when I give,
SQLCMD -E -S<SQLEXPRESS> -dmaster -Q"EXEC sp_detach_db msdb"Â [as per the article], what I get is:
The System cannot find the file specified.
So I am stuck at that point. What's with the 'cannot find file specified'? The stored procedure, or the mdf, ldf files for my msdb? What is it?Also, if and when I am through with step no. 3 I would like to know about steps 5. & 6. also which are soon to follow [like how to do them correctly, safely and from where, the different options]. This is a huge priority for me to get my sql server up and running again because I can't do my other coding works without it. Everything is stalled. Slowly reaching the desperation, SOS mode..

I got full backup on daily schedule its taking more space on Drive because each file has more than 25GB.I am using SLQ server 2008R2 so I'm looking to take the backup with compression instead of uncompressed Backup. What are the impacts of compressed backup. Is there any problems with compressed backup while restoring the backup file.

Hi All,
We have a database on our server in the office, which I have installed to test an application in delevelopment. I've got it all working and tested OK.
I've continued working on it at home. I've added some fields to one of the tables. The database in office has a data in which I whish to transfer to my test database - with the new fields added.
I have tried the backup and restore procedure, which works great, but it overwrites the entire database, I just want the data from all tables in one procedure each way, one to backup and one to restore.
I hope that makes sense.
Thanks
Wayne

I need to move a database from one server to a new server. Right now, I only have database file on CD which is generated using the backup feature of MS SQL server.
What I did was I copied the file from CD to the harddisk of the new server.
Then I used the restore database, restore from disk, where I specified the location of the backup database file. When I began to restore, the error message I got was:
The file 'e:MSSQL7dataGTCSQL_data.mdf cannot be used by RESTORE. Consider using the WITH MOVE option to identify a valid location for the file. Backup or restore operation terminating abnormally.
The error message in the error.log of SQL server is:
BackupFileDesc::VerifyCreatability: Operating system error 3(The system cannot find the path specified.) during the creation/opening of physical device e:MSSQL7DATAGTCIntranetSQL_dat.mdf.
What did I do wrong? How to use the WITH MOVE option? This is the first time I use MS SQL server. So please give me detailed instruction if posible.
Any suggestion are greatly appreciated.
Sheila

Here is a senario that I am confused about
if I backedup a table on Monday 5 pm. this table has 3 rows of data.
On Tuesday, I inserted 3 more rows and backed it at 5 pm ( total rows now are 6)
On Wedesday, I deleted the first 3 rows accidently.
Which is more efficient : to restore the data from Monday ( in order to restore the first 3 rows)
OR
Restore the data from Tuesday( I will choose not to append to the available data )
This is a small sample, but if I am dealing with 40 GB of data. I want to know the best way to restore the lost data.
Thanks for your help

I did a full backup of a db from one server(Express2005) and trying to restore it to a different instance of SQL2005 on the same development machine. (Also had some fulltext columns if that means anything)
Many failures but finally got it to report all was successful except the icon in Object Explorer shows (Restoring...) with no indication of any real activity going on. It's a tiny database with hardly any data in it.
Just not sure what the heck is going on there. It also won't let me into the database until this the (Restoring...) goes away.
Any advice on how to get this thing finished out?

I'm using SQL Server 2000 and need to restore a large database onto a different node. The problem is the original database has a 74 gb first datafile and the node where I need to restore it doesn't have a single drive that big. I'm trying to use a backup of the original database and restore it into an existing database on another node and am using the move options to put the files in the right places.
Is there a way I run the restore to split the 74 gb datafile across drives on my target node?
Thanks for any help.

Server consolidation is the word of the day here. One of the elements is to use, when applicable, virtual machines in our devstageprod environment. Our sql servers (with local storage) are well utilized and run fine. I don't want to move the entire server (sql 2005 engine + data) into a VM as I think performance will be bad. But, per my question, if only the sql engine is running in a VM while the data is stored on our SAN, I think we may achieve acceptable performance.
Do you have any thought or experience with this mix of Vm and SAN from a sql perspective?
TIA,
Barkingdog

I have downloaded he trial Edition of SQL2005 Enterprise Edition. The data base engine does not install. Since I have previously installed Visual Studio 2008 which has VS 2005 components I uninstalled the SQL 2005 (which only has the configuration tool.
I also uninstalled he SQL Express and Compact Editions. When I tried to install SQL 2005 Enterprise once again the Data Base Engine did not nstall. I do get a warning that IIS is running in 32 bit mode in the pre-setup list,(I am running W2K3 R2 x64). I do not know what tro do I am downloading the trial software again. I need to have the data base engine and management studio. I am baffled as to why it doesn't install the Dtat Base Engine. In my add and remove programs there is no instance of SQL installed. Can anyone help? Thank you in advance. Joe

We have been asked whether it is possible to completely delete sensitive data. When data is deleted it is not actually completely removed from the database but is marked as deleted. It is possible to zero out that data using sp_clean_db_free_space but this doesn't affect the transaction log.
We had hoped that CHECKPOINT would clear the data from the log but we are not completely certain of this. So the question becomes is there a built-in command or function in SQL Server 2008, or subsequent versions, that will completely remove deleted data, both from the transaction log and the database itself? Or is there a 3rd party tool to accomplish the same thing?

I looking for a way of measuring how many MB of outbound SQL data is being transferred during the course of a day from an OLTP instance.  Data is pulled from this server by a DW in the same domain and adhoc via a linked server. I'm looking at perfmon but nit sure if this is the correct tool and if so which counters to use.  I'm looking for the total MB/GB over the period not the MB per sec.Â

On one of our SQL Server 2008R2 instances the MSDB log file (MSDBLog.ldf) has grown to 300GB+. The data (.mdf) file is only 3GB.
Neither DBCC Shrinkfile(MSDBLog) nor an interactive "Tasks / Shrink / ..."
I've already deleted much of the historyThe MSDB database is in "Simple" recovery modeI've done a full backup (in case the log was "waiting" for a backup)
I hesitate to do things (such as as Detach / Attach) with MSDB that I might do with a user database.

In tweaking performance of tempdb by adding add'l data files I want to reset back to defaults and remove all add'l files I've created. Â I was not able to do it for most as they were in use, but by starting the server in single-user mode with all other sql services shut off, and using sqlcmd I was able to use the ALTER DATABASE tempdb REMOVE FILE <tempdev#> to remove the files... except for one.
I have also tried using the command:
ALTER DATABASE tempdb MODIFY FILE (NAME = tempdev#, FILENAME = '<new location');
Restarted SQL server, and tried the ALTER DATABASE ... REMOVE FILE again but am always denied with the message that the file can't be removed b/c it's still in use.
I also tried to shrink it with EMPTYFILE but that also fails with the message that a page is a work table page and can't be removed.
I really need to get tempdb back to just one data file but am unable to find a way to remove this last data file.

I need to recover some data in a table but i'm not 100% sure the right way to do this safely.
I'll need to query the two tables to compare the before and after but how do i go about restoring/attaching the backup database to SQL without causing conflicts?
If I restore, I assume this would just overwrite which is obviously the worst thing that can happen. if i attach the backup, how does this affect the current live DB? how do i make sure that it's not getting accessed and mistaken for the live DB?
The SQL server is 2008 R2 running as a VM.

Hi, I have looked and loked for the answer to this question and made no progress. I want to install MSDE on one of our servers, however, when I went to install it, I found that there was another MSDE already installed and running (it was an agent running with our backup software Veritas). Is it alright to create another database and have 2 running simultaneous on the same data engine? Is there any type of limitations that I sould know about - such as number of allowed accesses at one time? Any help is greatly appreicated.

I've some huge table (over 100GB each), these table contain column of NTEXT, IMAGE. Application team needs to change these data types to VARBINARY(MAX), I've tested the modification in our lab and I noticed that the operation has been almost immediate so, I think that DB Engnine has not converted the existing data in the column but it has simply changed the definition of the column.
Or maybe NTEXT and IMAGE can be transparently converted into VARBINARY(MAX)?
Anyway, I want to be sure that the modified table is "coherent" I don't want that at a given point SQL Server tells me that some data is not readable.
