DB Engine :: Restoring / Repairing (MSDB) Of 2012 Installed Copy?

Sep 16, 2015

Suddenly one day I found some corruptions have occurred in my SQL Server 2012 installation. Because my 'msdb' has been marked SUSPECT/CORRUPT; hence no new work can be done as per my schedules.

I have gone about trying to repair it. I followed this article here: [URL] [the region 'Create new MSDB Database'].

I am facing some sizeable difficulties in doing this on my own. Steps 1. & 2. I have done. I am now stuck at step no. 3.My instance name is SQLEXPRESS. So, when I give,

SQLCMD -E -S<SQLEXPRESS> -dmaster -Q"EXEC sp_detach_db msdb" [as per the article], what I get is:

The System cannot find the file specified.

So I am stuck at that point. What's with the 'cannot find file specified'? The stored procedure, or the mdf, ldf files for my msdb? What is it?Also, if and when I am through with step no. 3 I would like to know about steps 5. & 6. also which are soon to follow [like how to do them correctly, safely and from where, the different options]. This is a huge priority for me to get my sql server up and running again because I can't do my other coding works without it. Everything is stalled. Slowly reaching the desperation, SOS mode..

Repairing Corrupt MSDB File In SQL Server 2000.

Jun 13, 2001

Hi,

I am having problems with my SQL server Agent.

1) When I try to create a New Job/Alert/Operator, I get an error message:

Error 207: Invalid Column Name "category_id"
Invalid Column Name "netsend_address"
Invalid Column Name "last_netsend_date"
Invalid Column Name "last_netsend_time"

.....All these are referring to columns in System Tables of the system Database MSDB.

2)In another SQL Server...say "A", in it's SQL Server Agent, using the Multi-Server Administration, I set up the SQL Server Agent of "A" as the Master (MSX) server, and set up a Target(TSX) server pointing to the Server "B" that has problems in SQL Agent....referred in 1) above. When I try to "Detach the MSX Server" from server B, i get a message Error 207: Invalid Column Name "netsend_address", and cannot detach..........This is again referrring to a System Table.

It appears that the problem is with the MSDB database being corrupt. Is there a way I can Repair a Corrupt MSDB without Re-installing SQL Server 2000 and without a Backup.

Any help greatly appreciate.

Thanks

Russell

Restoring Msdb

Jan 24, 2002

Hi,

I am trying to build a test environment for our production server. I backedup and restored all my databases. I had to copy the jobs too, so I backedup and restored msdb database. When I try to change any of the jobs, I get the following message.

"Error 14274: Cannot add, update, or delete a job (or its steps or schedules) that originated from an MSX server."

I have no clue what this message is about. Can someone please provide me with some clues about how I can modify my jobs and get my test environment to work.

Thanks,
Rob

Restoring Msdb

Apr 18, 2006

I need some data from msdb.dbo.sysjobs and msdb.dbo.sysjobhistory but I need it from a backup file.

I don't need to restore the msdb database, I just need some data from the backup. Everytime I try to restore it under some innocuous name like bills_db it tells me msdb is in use.

Is there a way to restore this db to some other name and retrieve data from it?

No Jobs After Restoring Msdb.

Dec 12, 2002

I restored msdb on another server after moving all user databases and logins. I expected to see the jobs after the restore but I didn't.

I've read the article(Q314546) about moving databases and it indicates that you don't have to script them if you move msdb.

I didn't restore master. Only msdb.

Your thoughts please?

Restoring Master And MSDB To A New Server

Nov 10, 2005

I have a server attached to a SAN, all user db's are on the SAN, master, tempdb, and msdb are on the local machine. We will be replacing the machine (not the SAN) to a newer sql server. Our plan was to create the new server with same name, deattach current user db's,backup master and msdb, then connect new server with same name an IP to SAN. I then wanted to restore the master and msdb db's to the new machine, and attach the user db's. We are running log shipping to a stand-by server in this configuration. I was thinking I could let last tran log backup and copy occur, and then let the last restore happen on the standby. I would then shut down the agent. Should I not be able to restore the MSDB and master to the new server (as long as all file folder locations are the same) and be ready to go? Or are there issues when restoring the Master and MSDB to a new server from a different server.

DB Engine :: Can't Shrink MSDB Log File - Data Is 3GB But LDF Is 300 GB

Sep 26, 2015

On one of our SQL Server 2008R2 instances the MSDB log file (MSDBLog.ldf) has grown to 300GB+.  The data (.mdf) file is only 3GB.

Neither DBCC Shrinkfile(MSDBLog) nor an interactive "Tasks / Shrink / ..."

I've already deleted much of the historyThe MSDB database is in "Simple" recovery modeI've done a full backup (in case the log was "waiting" for a backup)

I hesitate to do things (such as as Detach / Attach) with MSDB that I might do with a user database.

How To Select From Data In Copy Of MSDB?

Mar 14, 2008

In SQL Server 2000 I developed a utility stored procedure for synchronising all the jobs relating to a specified job category from one SQL Server instance to another. It was quite simple... I restored the MSDB database from a source server to the target server but restored as a different db name, eg. MSDB_Copy. The sproc then just queried some system tables like sysjobs and syscategories and recreated the jobs on the target server. Now, in SQL Server 2005, some things have changed of course! For example, if I do...

select * from msdb_copy.dbo.syscategories

The result is from msdb.dbo.syscategories! Obviously, this is because 2005 have replaced the old concept of system tables with views. The question is, can anyone suggest a way to select data from 'tables' like syscategories in a copy of the MSDB database?

Thanks,
Clive

How Can I Tell If SQL Server Was Installed Using An MSDN Copy?

May 19, 2008

Hi all,

An internal licensing review is being carried out at my site for the first time since I joined. I have been asked to confirm that development SQL Server instances have been installed from MSDN installation disks and production instances from non-MSDN disks. I understand that serverproperty('licensetype') will show me this information in SQL Server 2000, and I am (perhaps incorrectly?) assuming that a result of "DISABLED" means MSDN was used for the installation.

In SQL Server 2005, i believe the installation does not record the necessary information in the registry, meaning serverproperty('licensetype') is of no use.

Is the question i've been asked impossible to answer? Is there any way I can find out if MSDN disks (or network copies of them) were used to install a SQL Server 2005 instance?

Many thanks.
James

SQL Server 2005 SP2 Cannot Be Installed Because The Database Engine Setup Remains In Suspended Installation Mode

Feb 23, 2007

SP2 refuses to install for the Database Engine because €œthe previous upgrade did not complete€?, i.e. it detects a suspended installation. The same thing happened to me when I installed SP1. I then remember opening the maintenance dialog and completing the setup, after which SP1 installed just fine.

When I try to do the same thing this time, I€™m presented with the €?complete the suspended installation€? option, which when I run it reports the installation completed successfully. However, in reality the installation still remains in suspended mode for whatever reason. If I reboot and open the maintenance dialog, I€™m still presented with the €?complete the suspended installation€? option. I€™ve even tried to run it more than once, but it doesn€™t help. Needless to say, SP2 still refuses to install.

I don't know why the installation is in a suspended state. I know every part of SP1 installed successfully in the end, and the computer never crashed during the installation. I've been using it every day since then, without any problems. All other parts of SP2 did install successfully.

I created a feedback entry on Microsoft Connect, where you can find the log files created by Windows Installer. The URL is:
https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=259606

Any ideas what I can do to resolve this problem?

SQL Server 2008 :: Using BCV Split Mirror Copy And Restoring Databases?

May 1, 2015

I was contacted by the SAN team to test backup/restore of larger databases using a split-mirror backup (BCV) or clone that is taken from production db server and copied to another sql box. They want to use this process once a week. I see the mounted drives with the data/log files. All looks good. Initially I attempted to attach the databases and received (Unable to open the physical file db.mdf Operating System Error 5 Access is denied). I manually granting SQLServerMSSQLUser$<computer_name>$<instance_name> on all of the physical files 20 total. That worked.

Since this will be weekly, the SAN team performed the copy again and now none of the databases can communicate with the newly copied files. NTFS permissions need to be set again. I'm getting (Operating System error 21: the device is not ready). Is there something that I'm missing in this process how the vendor BCV clones the data and SQL communicates with the copied files as I was thinking it would be more automated process?

DBCC CHECKDB shows no errors and the database is part of an AOAG in synchronized state. We have log backups in every 15 minutes.

SQL 2012 :: Refreshing MSDB SSIS Packages From One Server To Another

Mar 25, 2015

I was recently tasked with creating an automated process to refresh SSIS packages from MSDB on one server to another and I decided to go the route of using Powershell, however this wasn't as straight forward as I originally imagined so I thought I would share my solution in case others encounter the same request. The below PowerShell code will create all Integration Services folders from the source MSDB (that contain SSIS packages) on the target instance of MSDB then copy all packages to the proper folder locations. The /QUIET option is used to automatically overwrite packages that already exist on the target so make sure you want to overwrite the current versions of your packages before executing.

[Reflection.Assembly]::LoadWithPartialName("Microsoft.SQLServer.ManagedDTS") | out-NULL
