DB Maintenance - Purging Old File Feature

May 31, 2006

Hi,

I'm using SQL2K with SP4 2187. I have created a DB Maintenance wizard where the purging older than 1 day is set.

However, this feature seems not to be working, even if I tried two ways. Delete the scheduled job and recreate it - not successful, 2nd) delete the Maintenance Plan, still not successful.

Is this a bug or do I miss something here.

Maintenance Commands Affect On Log File / Log File Maintenance Without Log File Backups?

Jun 18, 2015

I am testing some maintenance tasks sql commands such as index rebuild, index reorg, update statistics and db integrity check on a SQL Server 2014 Database. This is a new non-production vendor database (DB Size 500 GBs, Log Size 25 GBs) which eventually will be created in production. Currently, it is in full recovery model and without log backups. The database has a whole lot of indexes. I am just trying to rebuild and reorganize all the indexes (that need it), in addition to trying to get an idea of how long these maintenance task will take and the space needed in the log file to complete these tasks/commands. I would like to execute these tasks manually (the first time) to gather the duration and space required information. Eventually, I would probably schedule a weekly job to perform this maintenance.

I ran the index rebuild task on the database and noticed that the log file grew by over 50 GBs. I killed the process and truncated and shrunk the log file back down.

1. Does the index rebuild, index reorg, update statistics and db integrity check commands all use the log file?

2. Does Indexs Reorg have less impact on log file then Index Rebuild?

3. Should a truncate log and shrink log file be performed after these maintenance commands?

4. Should a full database backup be performed after these maintenance commands? Or before the maintenance commands?

I have read and understand that shrinking is not good for the database (could lead to more fragmentation and more data file growth when data is added) and I know about rebuilding indexes when fragmentation is GT 30% and reorganizing indexes when fragmentation is GT 5% and LE 30%.

Since this is a non-production database maybe I should set the recovery model to simple, run the maintenance commands and leave the database in simple recovery model unless the vendor needs it in full recovery model for some unknown reason.

5. With the simple recovery model the log file should be reused in a circular manner and not grow during these maintenance tasks. Is this correct?

Run Backup (maintenance Plan) From Batch (.bat) File

What is the method to execute backups from batch (.bat) files on the server running SQL Server. I have tried the sqlmaint command - doesn't seem to execute, looked into the xp_sqlmaint with no luck. I'm sure the problem lies in my lack of DOS batch programming skills. If anyone has an example of a batch file that executes a backup would you mind sharing. thanks

Purging TempDB

Jun 20, 2007

Hi DB Experts

I have a question on shrinking tempDB. Currently, I am using MS SQL 2005 Server, I have a software that used SQL DB but I had created a separate database to store my data. The tempDB is totally not used at all.

Problem - Whenever I export data into my created database on MS SQL server, tempDB also grew, I noticed that the files grew so large that it crashed the server. I am running 50GB free space on my drive where by the MS SQL server was installed.

Question - May I know are there any solution to shrink or freeze the growth of tempDB size?

Best regards

Purging The Old Transaction Log Files

Aug 7, 2007

Hi,

In one of our DR Servers we have configured Custom Logshipping. In the folder where the .TRN files are getting copied there is a script to purge the files which are older than one day. Following is the code for the same.

@Echo Off
if exist filelist del filelist
date /t > rundate
for /f "tokens=2* delims= " %%i in (rundate) do set rundate=%%i
for %%i IN (*.trn) do echo >> filelist %%i %%~ti
for /f "tokens=1,2* delims= " %%i in (filelist) do if not %rundate% equ %%j del %%i
:pause
:Exit

Instead of removing the files older than 1 day, I need to keep 3 days transaction logs.

Being a novice I don't have much idea how to accomlish it. Can anybody help me with this?

Many thanks in advance,

Sandhya

Purging Deleted Database Names

Jul 1, 2002

When connecting to an SQL Server (v7 in this case) the log file shows that old and deleted databases are still being opened as part of the process. Further, these db names are now reserved and cannot be reused, even thought I've deleted them.

Is there any way I can purge all traces of these deleted db names?

You might have guessed, I'm a newbie, which is why there are a few dozen deleted DBs.

Thanks for any help

Data-archiving And Purging Strategy

Mar 31, 2008

Regarding SQL Server data, I am looking to implement the beset Data-Archive and Purge policy. Normal, we do SQL Backups and keep the history for some period , for example, 8 weeks, so we can go back and restore any data point in time upto 8 month in past. and we also do Tape backups.

Question is Where can I get nice article or documentation on this to best design such policy where I make sure that I am covered for point in time recovery of database (which is sql backups) and point in time recovery in far past, say, 3 years ago using tape backups, and I need to make sure that I don't repeat the same efforsts.

Any advices or suggestion on this topic.

Thanks,

Ongoing Purging Of Active Records Causes Deadlocks

Jul 19, 2007

Hi,We have a Java application that runs against a variety of backendsincluding Oracle and MSSql 2000 and 2005. Our application has ahandful of active tables that are constantly being inserted into, andsome of which are being selected from on a regular basis. We have a purge job to remove unneeded records that every hour "DELETEFROM <tableWHERE <datafield< <sometimestamp>". This is how we arepurging because we need 100% up time, so we do so every hour. Forsome tables the timestamp is 2 weeks ago, others its 2 hours ago. Thedate field is indexed in some cases, in others it is not... theDELETE is always done off of a transaction (autoCommit on), butexperimentation has shown doing it on one doesn't help much. This task normally functions fine, but every once in a while theinserts or counts on this table fail with deadlocks during the purgejob. I'm looking for thoughts as to what we could do differently orother experience doing this type of thing, some possibilities include:- doing a select first, then deleting one by one. This is apossibility, but its SLOW and may take over an hour to do this so we'dbe constantly churning deleting single records from the db.- freezing access to these tables during the purge job... our appcannot really afford to do this, but perhaps this is the only option.- doing an update of an "OBSOLETE" flag on the record, then deletingby that flag... i'm not sure we'd avoid issues doing this, but its'an option. The failures happen VERY infrequently on sql2005 and much morefrequently on sql2000. Any help or guidance would be mostappreciated, thanks!Bob

SSIS Package That Would Perform Routine Purging

Jun 29, 2006

HiWe have need for an SSIS package that would perform routine purging of the growing data in some of the tables used to support notification services. While running Sql in a regular job would seem to suffice, an SSIS package would be more in line with the other processes for the alerts in terms of manageability. The SSIS package should follow the following guidelines:Deletes records from a given number of tables, based on a specified date column for each table and a specified number of days for each table, or other conditions. SystemAlertQueue: 30 days old based on the SubmitTimestamp column. SystemAlertChron: 30 days old based on the EventTimestamp column. SystemAlertNotifChron: 30 days old based on the NotifTimestamp column. WMICheck, related tables (based on WMICheckID, see WMIAlerts database diagram in SqlServer) 15 days old based on BeginCheckDate column. Each table€™s deletion routine should be distinguishable in the package. Does any body know how to do this.. Please help meRegardsDeepu M.I

SQL 2005 Maintenance Cleanup Task Is Not Deleting Files On Remote File Share

Jan 16, 2008

I have the following issue with Maintenance plan backups that work for BAK DIF and TRN to a remote server share.
When I try and remove the old files with a clean up task I get an error and the files don't get deleted.

The version is as follows
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.3054.00 (X64) Mar 23 2007 18:41:50
Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Standard Edition (64-bit) on
Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)

The error result is as follows,

Failed-1073548784) Executing the query "EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_delete_file
0,N'\\EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_delete_file 0,N'\ABCD-A1\BACKUPS\ABCD_BACKUP\ABC_DAILY\ABCD',N'trn',N'2008-01-13T12:52:49'" failed with the following error: "xp_delete_file() returned error 2, 'The
system cannot find the file specified.'". Possible failure reasons: Problems
with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set
correctly, or connection not established correctly.

The maintenance plan seems to be adding extra "" though when i enter the
code directly in a query i get same error.

Query:

EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_delete_file 0,N'\ABCD-A1BACKUPSABCD_BACKUPABC_DAILYABCD',N'trn',N'2008-01-13T12:52:49'

Error:

xp_delete_file() returned error 2, 'The system cannot find the file specified.'

The servers belong to the same domain and are using the same Service account which has all the necessary rights to the share and the file directory location. The backups work but i get the error on the cleanup task.

Trying to figure out how to get the Cleanup task to delete old files. The same happens for all file extensions and I have tried other locations with simpler file paths same error.

Regards,
Scott

Recovery :: Maintenance Task To Copy Bak File To Secondary Drive After Backup Is Complete?

Nov 6, 2015

I need to copy a just-created bak file to another drive after the backup task has completed. I don't see anything in the job toolbox which works with file system operations like this. But still it must be a common need..There are ways to script this or use third part tools but I am looking for something native to the sql server 2012 SSMS toolset, if possible.

An alternate approach would be to run the backup job again, after the main backup, and change the destination to the alternate location. But I was thinking that another backup job would probably invoke more overhead on the server than a simple file copy operation. If I do end up taking this approach I could also use the cleanup task to toss older bak files in the alt dir.

SQL Server 2012 :: Purging Data From Master And 5 Child Tables

Jul 5, 2014

Little info: Every day, 300 Million records are inserted in below 7 tables. we should maintain only 8 days worth of data in below tables. How to implement Purge script which can delete records in all tables in the same time and with optimized parallelism.

Master table which has [ID],[Timestamp]
Table Name: Sample - 2,578,106

Child tables: Foreign key [ID] is common for all the tables. There is no timestamp column in child table. So the records needs to deleted based on Min(ID) from Sample

Maintenance Plan Wizard Vs Tsql Maintenance

Aug 17, 2007

Hello,

I have a question that I hope someone can clear up for me. I have come across a number of different suggestions on DB maintenance, for example reindexing with the following script:

USE DatabaseName --Enter the name of the database you want to reindex

DECLARE @TableName varchar(255)

DECLARE TableCursor CURSOR FOR
SELECT table_name FROM information_schema.tables
WHERE table_type = 'base table'

OPEN TableCursor

FETCH NEXT FROM TableCursor INTO @TableName
WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0
BEGIN
DBCC DBREINDEX(@TableName,' ',90)
FETCH NEXT FROM TableCursor INTO @TableName
END

CLOSE TableCursor

DEALLOCATE TableCursor

My question is, doesn't the maintenance plan have this functionality inherent in it when you create the maintenance jobs to reindex? Is there a benefit to scripting things out vs just using the maintenance plan wizard for this sort of thing and any of the items it covers? I came from an Oracle background where this was a no-brainer but I am a bit confused on the choices with SQL Server.

Thanks.

Feature Or Bug?

Jul 12, 2006

Service Broker will let you create two services with the same name (one with contract and another without)

CREATE SERVICE [Order Msg Recieve] AUTHORIZATION [dbo] ON QUEUE [dbo].[Order Return Msg Queue]

CREATE SERVICE [Order Msg Receive] AUTHORIZATION [dbo] ON QUEUE [ODS].[Order Return Msg Queue] ([OrderSubmission])

When you delete the service....

drop service [Order Msg Recieve]

It will only drop the first one. In the BOL there is no syntax for telling it to delete the second one, however you can drop it from SQL Management Studio.

I stumbled over this by accident. Just FYI

Sql Server Feature Or Bug?

Aug 8, 2007

Try this in sql server 2005:
select COALESCE(a1, char(254)) as c1 from
(select 'Z' as a1 union select 'Ya' as a1 union select 'Y' as a1 union select 'W' as a1) as b1
group by a1
with rollup order by c1
select COALESCE(a1, char(255)) as c1 from
(select 'Z' as a1 union select 'Ya' as a1 union select 'Y' as a1 union select 'W' as a1) as b1
group by a1
with rollup order by c1

The only difference is that the first one uses 254 and the second one uses 255. The first sorts like this:
WYYaZþ
The second one sorts like this:
WYÿYaZ
Is this expected behavior?

DTS Bug? (or Random Feature?)

Jul 16, 1999

Has anyone noticed that if you created DTS package and try to
change connection properties (i.e. change DSN or redirect
DTS to different server or Database), as soon you click OK
it does not save new password and hence does not work
anymore. In my case to move Database from Development to
Production server I would have to recreate all DTS packages.
Is there any way around it?

Any ideas greatly appreciated.
