DB Upgrade/Schema Changes

Apr 1, 2008

Hi, trying to affect schema changes on an SQL DB using however Im encountering a number of errors when trying to do this. Changes are are affected by running a consecutive number of scripts against the DB, see example of script below:

-- PREVIOUSDBVERSION=2.8.2.5
-- The above line must be present in all Upgrade SQL files to catch any gaps in the upgrade chain.
--
--ALL
--
SET NUMERIC_ROUNDABORT OFF
GO
SET ANSI_PADDING, ANSI_WARNINGS, CONCAT_NULL_YIELDS_NULL, ARITHABORT, QUOTED_IDENTIFIER, ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM tempdb..sysobjects WHERE id=OBJECT_ID('tempdb..#tmpErrors')) DROP TABLE #tmpErrors
GO
CREATE TABLE #tmpErrors (Error int)
GO
SET XACT_ABORT ON
GO
SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL SERIALIZABLE
GO
BEGIN TRANSACTION
GO

PRINT N'Dropping Stats from A DB'
GO
DECLARE @tblname sysname, @statname sysname, @sql nvarchar(2000)

DECLARE c CURSOR FOR
SELECT object_name(id), name
FROM sysindexes
WHERE INDEXPROPERTY(id, name, 'IsStatistics') = 1

OPEN c
FETCH NEXT FROM c INTO @tblname, @statname

WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0
BEGIN
SET @sql = 'DROP STATISTICS [' + @tblname + '].[' + @statname + ']'
PRINT @sql
EXEC (@sql)
FETCH NEXT FROM c INTO @tblname, @statname
END

CLOSE c
DEALLOCATE c
GO
IF @@ERROR<>0 AND @@TRANCOUNT>0 ROLLBACK TRANSACTION
GO
IF @@TRANCOUNT=0 BEGIN INSERT INTO #tmpErrors (Error) SELECT 1 BEGIN TRANSACTION END
GO

The database I am upgrading has a growth limit of 2GB, when running the scripts against the DB two things are happening.

1) DB size begins to increase rapidly and eventually breaches 2GB mark
2) LDF file swells to upto 3GB

My first thought is that the schema changes are gathering in the log file and not being commited to the DB, or that there is some kind of open transaction that the script is constantly trying to execute over and over.

Would like to point out im a novice SQL user, if the information above is sketchy please dont hesitate to say and I will endeavour to provide you with more accurate information.

Cheers

How Do I Upgrade An Existing Database Schema?

May 8, 2006

I have written some software using .NET 2.0, a WinForms app, which uses SQL Server Express as a database. Although I've done my best to set up the database to take into account all of the features, etc., after releasing the first version, I need to make some changes to the database schema, but want to do so without wiping out the entire database for existing users. How do I go about upgrading the database schema for users who are already using the software? I'm thinking I should start by writing a helper app to do so whose sole purpose is to upgrade the schema. The app would be run at install-time, but I don't have any idea how to actually upgrade the schema. I am using C++/CLR .NET, but examples in other .NET languages are more than welcome. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Prevent SQL Connections During Database Schema Upgrade

Mar 21, 2007

Hello,

We utilise SQL scripts, executed via sqlcmd.exe, to upgrade the schema and common data of our database(s) when we deploy new versions of our software to a production site. At the moment we simply wait until after hours to do the upgrade and ask nicely for all users to not use the system for a while.

Obviously, asking nicely doesn't always work, and there is also the issue of scheduled server tasks and web services / web sites that operate against the database 24/7.

What are our options for putting the entire server (or preferrably just one database) into a semi-offline state so that users and services cannot connect to it while our script connects and performs the upgrade? I imagine there may be several approaches each with their own pros and cons.

If you could point me in the right direction or perhaps mention what strategy has worked for you, it would be greatly appreciated. We perform these upgrades from hundreds of kilometers away via VPNs and Remote Desktop so we can't just unplug the network cable :).

Thank you.

Regards,
- Jason

Available Strategies To Upgrade A Database Schema Without Downtime

Mar 29, 2007

There is a great book on database refactoring that contains a comprehensive set or recipies on how to revise databases that are supposed to be always online and may have various clients that can't be upgraded at the same time. I guess this is a typical case with large databases and I would be surpised if Amazon stops their servers just to move a column from one table to another. The book describes necessary steps for such changes. Basically it's all about creating intermediate database schemas that would be used during transition period.

For example, if we need to move a column from one table to another:

Version 1.
Table A columns: Name, Price
Table B columns: Quantity, Date

Let's say we move Price to table B:

Version 2.
Table A columns: Name
Table B columns: Quantity, Date, Price

The book suggests an intermediate version:

Version 1_2.
Table A columns: Name, Price
Table B columns: Quantity, Date, Price
Additional trigger that will synchronize "Price" columns between A and B.

Version 1_2 can be used by both clients written for version 1 and 2. Software developers don't need to rush their upgrades, transition can last months and include several changes.

This technique requires accuracy in version control management, but looks very good to implement non-interruptible database schema upgrade. I wonder if this is the only option available for data schema upgrade with no downtime. I can't think about anything else - it this how large data warehouses updata their databases?

The 'System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider' Requires A Database Schema Compatible With Schema Version '1'.

Sep 27, 2007

Locally I develop in SQL server 2005 enterprise. Recently I recreated my db on the server of my hosting company (in sql server 2005 express).I basically recreated the tables and copied the data in it.I now receive the following error when I hit the DB:The 'System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider' requires a
database schema compatible with schema version '1'.  However, the
current database schema is not compatible with this version.  You may
need to either install a compatible schema with aspnet_regsql.exe
(available in the framework installation directory), or upgrade the
provider to a newer version.I heard something about running aspnet_regsql.exe, but I dont have that access to the DB. Also I dont know if this command does anything more than creating the membership tables and filling it with some default data...Any other solutions/thought on what this can be?Thanks!

Moving Data From One DB Schema To Another DB Schema Using SSIS

May 8, 2007

Hello,

I would like to use SSIS tool to move the data from one database schema to another database schema.

For example:

Source table has

1. UserName (varchar 20) (no null)

2. Email (varchar 50) (can be null)

Destination table has

1. UserID (uniqueidentifier - GUID)

2. UserName (varchar 50) (no null)

3. EmailAddress (nvarchar 50) (can be null)

4. DateTime

Questions:

1. What controls do I use in my Data Flow to make data move between databases with different data types and include new value in UserID as a new GUID and DateTime as a date (GETDATE)?

OLE DB Source, OLE DB Destination, Data Converson and .....

How do I insert Guid and Date at the same time?

2. I have many tables to do data moving. Any sugestions? How do I architect my project? If I create many data flows for each table - it will look complicated.

Please give me some advices here.

Thanks.

Upgrade Advisor Post-upgrade

Dec 6, 2006

Greetings,

I have a client whose DBA upgraded their SQL 2000 database to SQL 2005. They still have it running in 8.0 compatibility mode, for various reasons, and would like me to help them develop a migration strategy to get them to full 9.0 compatibility.

My question is: can I run the Upgrade Advisor on a SQL 2005 engine database running in 8.0 compatibility mode and get anything useful? I already know there will be some issues with existing DTS packages but it would be nice to catch any other issues in advance.

I know that the Upgrade Advisor was run before the upgrade took place but to my knowledge the report was not saved and none of the recommendations were followed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Lon

In Place Upgrade Vs Side By Side Upgrade

Jun 1, 2007

SQL 2000 -> SQL 2005 upgrade on windows server 2003 ... We've done numerous side by side types of upgrades which have the advantages of being able to migrate things at a slower pace with limited downtime. I have a situation where it seems like it would be the least amount of work to do an in place upgrade involving 22 transactional in-house developed databases and associated in-house developed applications. There's no replication, no DTS packages, nothing I can think of that would complicate the upgrade. I was wondering if there's people out there that have done lots of these and haven't had any problems OR if there have been lots of problems. Anyway, any advice would be appreciated.

Schema Changes

Nov 8, 2006

I have setup merge replication between two machines and the data seems to be updating when changed on either side ok. However I am now looking at how I can handle schema changes. I have found on msdn (although not tried) stored procedures that will add and remove columns, but what happens if I want to delete a table for example.

At the moment I can deselect the table being deleted from being published and then delete it or modify it in Management Studio, which then means I need to create a new snapshot which can take sometime before the change is updated on the subscriber.

Is there a better way to tackle schema updates that I have not found yet? Also, how will the subscriber cope if someone starts modifying data while synchronisation to the new snapshot is going on.

I am using SQL 2005 by the way.

Thanks

Schema Problems

Nov 19, 2006

I wrote a website that hits an SQL Server DB using queries that directly acces the table name with no Schema references. (Ex: SELECT * FROM tblHelpNotes;) I have also backed the file and and somehow (I have forgotten how I managed to import it.) imported it into SQL Server Express to run at home. The problem I am having is that in order to query at home I HAVE to use the Schema or it won't work. (Ex: SELECT * FROM dbo123456.tblHelpNotes;) How can I change this so I can just hit the table directly? I have tried miserable to set up a user that uses the default schema of db123456 but I can't seem to get it to work. Any idea's to point me in the right direction?

After bring all the data in my Data Mart, I have created a view which has all the data in a big flat table (totally unnormalized). Then based on this BIG FLAT UNNORMALIZED VIEW :) I have created my various dimensions using the 1st option i.e. Star Schema.

Based on the little testing that I have done, I seem to be getting the correct results across various dimensions... However, can someone kindly comment on this approach and the pros/cons.

Survey DB Schema

Dec 12, 2004

I am trying to modify a survey DB schema created by OOP(Object Oriented Programming) snobs who had their heads so far up their butts(in my opinion).
This is current schema created by them.

Diagram 1 (OOP snobs version)
http://us.f3.yahoofs.com/users/41a4fde6zcff655d9/a2ae/__sr_/2761.jpg?phsEJvBB3t1v7URD

Actually there aren't a several foreign keys as they are shown in the picture, but that's what they(OOP snobs) are doing to the table "Response". They are inserting question_collection_id and its name as well as question_id and its name to Response table. However, it was not ill-intended, "We just wanted to load the report quickly"(OOP snobs).
But I really recommend this schema, Because of its simplicity.

Diagram 2 (My version)
http://us.f3.yahoofs.com/users/41a4fde6zcff655d9/a2ae/__sr_/e890.jpg?phrEJvBBF0.lGY5Y

Yet I haven't proven that my schema will provide report just as quickly as OOP snobs' version. As mentioned earlier, since they don't have foreign key constraints accordingly, I do find quite number of discrepancy on values of "question" columns between "Question" and "Response" tables and "question_collection" columns between "question_collection" and "Response" table. I can provide schedule task to eliminate those problems. But I really prefer my schema than theirs. So far, I can explain mine is better just because of its simplicity and DBA's gut instinct. I'd like to hear Superior Expert's opinion which schema is better and why one is better than the other.

Attached is also zip files of schema images if you can't see them by those URL.

Moving BD To New Schema...

Apr 3, 2006

Good morning to everyone!

I have a 3Gig SQL database that currently has all Indexes, Logs, and Data on one drive. We have a new server that will be put in place on Wednesday and thankfully we will be putting the Indexes and TransLogs on different drives from the actual Data. Does anyone have a recommendation on his/her preferred way of doing this and what are some of the advantages/disadvantages some of you may have encountered? This isn't homework. I am finally getting the hang of manipulating and working with our database and will need to accomplish the server switch in about two weeks. Or if you have a recommended reading on this - please point me to it and I'll get to practicing!

Thanks to everyone!
