SQL Server ODBC connections to virtual server that has SQL Server 2k comes back with a 'Specified SQL Server does not exist'. Can telnet to the server, can ping it as well. THe node is up and running, another virtual instance running from the same node is fine.
What could be the issue here?????
I am experiencing a strange problem on a new installation of SQL Server 2000, installed on Windows 2003 server. SQL server has been service packed to SP3a
The users connect to the SQL database via an MS Access project front end, when they log out of the front end the SQL server still show them as connected in Management > Current activity > process info. I can kill the processes left behind but i am confused as to why this is happening.
The database was recently moved from an SQL installation on a Windows 2000 server to this new Windows 2003 server, the problem didnt occur on the old server and no upgrades have been applied to the database or the front end since the move, which makes me think something is not right about the install.
Any advice would be gratefully received

Apologies if this is the wrong place to be posting this but I have posted on a few forums and have not had any usable answers to this question, so I am hoping you guys will be able to help me.
I have 2 servers that are on the same domain. My ASP.NET application is running off the first which has .NET 2.0 installed, and I have an SQL Server 2000 db on the other. Whenever I try to connect I get the following error:An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
The connection works when I run the project in VS Development Server on my work computer, but as soon as I upload to the server I get this error.
I have scoured Google but all of the sites I come across are for SQL Server 2005 and are just not suitable for solving the issue on 2000.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I cannot continue my current project until this issue is resolved.

My question is about allowing and securing connections to SQL Server 2000 over the internet. The company that I work for has an application server that several of our clients connect to via the internet using secure .NET remoting. Basically, the clients have a desktop application that they run that creates a remoting connection to our server software and we handle the server/database part. Anyway, one of our clients now wants to use Crystal Reports to run ad hoc queries on their data that is hosted on our SQL 2000 database server behind our firewall. Obviously, opening up a port in our firewall and allowing someone to run ad hoc queries on the database makes us all more than a little nervous about security.
Has anyone else here had to deal with this sort of situation before? We'd like to set up a secure, encrypted connection for this one client, but still keep it locked down for everyone else. Is it as simple as enabling encryption and generating SSL certificates for the client machine and our server? I've only been able to find a few resources that help with bits and pieces of the problem, never anything tackling the issue as a whole. If anyone has any thoughts, experiences, links, etc. to share it would be greatly appreciated. We are a small company and no one here has experience with this sort of thing.

What are the maximum number of user connections achievable for sql server 2000 (w/ win 2000 adv server), and how are they managed - compared with sql server 7.0 (w/ win nt 4.0)? Our group is looking at upgrading our dbase server from sql server 7.0 to sql server 2000.

I am using SQL Server 2000 for one of our web application system called eRoom. eRoom uses SQL Server 2000 as a database. Now I have used SQL Server 2000 Database backup features to run the 4 database backup every night at 10pm. The backup runs fine. But recently I have found that for some reason when Our server machine which is hosting eRoom and SQL Server (Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition) is restarted, the database backup does not run anymore.
Now I have checked SQL Server settings and the settings allow SQL Server and SQL Server agent to restart both the services when the operating system starts. But still the database backup does not run when the server machine is restarted. It happened twice last week. Can anyone please help me?
Here are some information to help you understand the problem.
Backup Process Followed:
I went to SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Manager, then went to the appropriate server and then right click the Database>All Tasks> Backup Database> and then selected the backup file which is a (.BAK) file and then scheduled the database to be backed up at 10:00pm every night. I followed the same procedure for all 4 databases.
I am running SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition on Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition R2

I hope someone can help me out here? I have a fresh install of SQL Server 2000 (standard edition - sp4), on a server running Windows 2003 SE (v 5.2.3790). I am trying to create a system dsn on my client pc (running Windows 2000) to a newly created database in SQL server called BLISS.
I am getting the following error message:

Hi, This may be a trivial question but neither SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services SP1 or SP2 wil install against our SQL Server 2005 Developer edition installation.

Does anyone know whether the Services Packs are for SQL Server 2000 only? if so, whether the new functionality in SP2 will be made available to SQL Server 2005?

I have an installation of SQL Server 2000. Both MBSA and @@versionshow this to be the gold release. When I install Service Pack 3a, itshows no error. But after restart of the server, it's still unpatched,by both MBSA and @@version.Any idea what may be going on here?

i tried to install SQL Server 2000 Developer and MSDE the whole day on my Windows XP SP2.
MDAC is the latest, that come with WinXP SP2 (2.81). The installation fails at the end after 100% complete.
It says:

The DTS works perfectly when I run it manually. However, when I run itas a job it fails. Before you ask if i'm running it under differentsecurity context. I have already made sure of that. I was logged intothe server through remote viewer, when I created and ran the package,as well as scheduling the job. So the accounts they're running underare consistent. They're the same accounts as the SQL Agent is runningunder and it's the sys admin account.The data source is a Fox pro database with a pull of two tables. I amusing Microsoft OLE DB Foxpro driver as my source connection and OLE DBConnection for SQL Server as my destination. I am doing a simple tableto table transformation. The path of my connection is a mapped Drive:E:Main. There are other packages and jobs within my job queue that arepointing to the same database and they seem to run fine using the abovemapped drive. The ONLY difference between this package and otherpackages are that, they're few months old and this one was created lastnight. we have tables with many image columns. We fill these image columns via ODBC and SQLPutData as described in MSDN etc (using SQL_LEN_DATA_AT_EXEC(...), calling SQLParamData and sending the data in chunks of 4096 bytes when receiving SQL_NEED_DATA).
The SQLPutData call fails under the following conditions with sqlstate 08S01
- The database resides on SQL Server 2000
- The driver is SQL Native Client
- The table consists e.g. of one Identity column (key column) and nine image columns
- The data to be inserted are nine blocks of data with the following byte size:
1: 6781262
2: 119454
3: 269
4: 7611
5: 120054
6: 269
7: 8172
8: 120054
9: 269
The content of the data does not matter, (it happens also if only zero bytes are written), nor does the data origin (file or memory).
All data blocks including no 7 are inserted. If the first chunk of data block 8 should be written with SQLPutData the function fails and the connection is broken. There are errors such as "broken pipe" or "I/O error" depending on the used network protocol.
If data no 7 consists of 8173 bytes instead of 8172 all works again.
(Changing the 4096 chunk size length does not help)
Has anybody encountered this or a similar phenomenon?

We have 4 sql servers which service 4 load balanced web servers (with sticky sessions) and we recently brought one of the four SQL servers online.
In the last week the new SQL Server 2000 Standard (SP4) has been exhibing orphaned connections and attempts to use invalid connections out of the connection pool on the app servers. This manifests itself in General network Errors and Timeouts (when the sql is not really doing much other than simple table requests).
Does anyone have any experience in what might be causing this on a new server. I've asked our networking people to verify that the network routing and firewall are set the same as the other three servers. The application is the same acrossed all of the app servers so I've ruled out any issues with the application not closing connections.
I did a small package with only one ODBC connection (Merant 3.70 32-Bit Progess). This package runs well in Visual Studio and fails when runs by SQL Server Agent.

The ODBC connection configuration in available on System DSN on this server.

In sql 2000 when i try to run that job it gives the following error and fails

I have a Microsoft Cluster running on Server 2003 Entrprise. SQL 2000 8.00.2039 (SP4). 5gb physical memory installed.
With the databases online we run a test failover from the Cluster administrator. It takes about 30-40 seconds and completes without generating any Server Event log errors nor SQL log errors. Everything looks good from an administrative stand point.
However, when we test with running a series of queries to the databases, then failover, we notice that it can take up to 3 or 4 minutes before some of the databases will respond. Connections are not refused, they just sit there.
How can we troubleshoot this or does anyone have a similiar experience with this scenario?

We're trying to use the unattended installation method for installing SQL 2000 on Windows 2000 servers. I've installed it (through terminal server) on two machines successfully, and two machines unsuccessfully. On the unsuccessful machines, it fails with no errors, and no SQL files are installed (bombs out almost immediately).
Anyone else had this problem? Could it possibly be a hardware issue?
I have MS SQL 2000 Standard edition licensed in "per device" mode on adual xeon. However the properties->Processor tab on EM only list 1 cpu(CPU 0) and has "use all available processors" selected and the use [#]is greyed out.Anybody else experience this? Is it really using both processors? Or doI have some limited product key? View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed SP2 successfully a number of times before, but always where the Report Server and the Report Server databases were on the same box. This is the first time trying to install the Service Pack where the Report Server is on server X and the databases are on server Y.
When I try to run the SP (on server X), I get the following message:
Login failed for user '(null)'. Reason: Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection.
I am logged in using a domain account that is a local admin on both servers (and also the SQL Server startup account on server Y). It is also the account used by the Report Server to connect to the RS databases. The startup account for the Report Server service is 'NT AUTHORITYNETWORK SERVICE'.
Installation of MSDE 2000 fails on 64-bit Windows Vista (Build 5308).
The error message is "Setup failed to configure the server.Please refer the error logs for more information". No error log can be found on the machine at the time of installation. Please let me know if anyone else has encountered this problem?
Is it possible to install MSDE 2000 on 64-bit Windows Vista(Build 5308)?

I am experiencing an issue with SQL Server 2000 Maintenance Plan.
DB Backup job fails to delete old backup files from the file server (I am backing up to the network share - actually, a DFS).
Backup part of the maintenance plan/job succeeds, but then cleanup part fails.
I made sure that service account under which SQL Server Agent is running, has sufficient privileges over the network share by logging in and successfully deleting files in question.
I was not able to locate any log entries either on the SQL Server machine or on the file server machine that would indicate the root of the problem. Even though I turned on auditing for Delete operations for the destination folder, its subfolders and files, I could not find anything in the Security event log.
I would appreciate any ideas on how to troubleshoot and correct this problem.

I created an updateable partioned view of a very large table. Now I get an error when I attempt to declare a CURSOR that SELECTs from the view, and a FOR UPDATE argument is in the declaration.
There error generated is:

Here is the cursor declaration:

PS: Since I tested the updateability of the view there are no issues with primary keys, uniqueness, or indexes missing. Also, unfortunately, the dreaded cursor is requried, so set based alternatives are not an option - it's from within Peoplesoft.

According to this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277 I am supposed to:

Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, point to Configuration Tools, and then click SQL Server Surface Area Configuration.
Ok, there is no such program in this folder. The only thing in there is "SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting"...
The other thing I am greatly concerned with is this: All is want is for my webpages to be able to access my database for user authentication. I DO NOT want to grant the internet rights to remote connect to my database.
I get the following error and have been trying to figure out why I keep getting it. Initially, I had placed my project under wwwroot folder and ran it under IIS and it gave this error. Then I moved it to my local C drive and same thing. I am sharing this project with two other co-workers and all our config files and code files are same...they don't get this error but I do. I checked that SQL Server Client Network Utility has TCP/IP and the 'Named Pipes' enabled. I thought maybe I have setting in the Visual Studio 2005 that I'm not aware of that's causing this problem...it can't be the server since my co-workers aren't having this error and can't be anything in the code since all of us are sharing this project through vss. I dont' think using different version of .net framework can create this error. I changed the version from 2.0 to use 1.1x and it gave same error... Any help would be greatly appreciated.
