DTEXEC For Remote Execute
Feb 19, 2007
I have a legacy extraction ("E") .NET 1.1 application that is still going to be the driving force for our ETL process. We are going to be utilizing SSIS for "T" and "L". Now, the "E" phase is running on an application server where we have .NET 1.1 framework installed and working. The SSIS packages are running on a separate SQL Server. The problem here is - how do we call the SSIS package and be able to pass in the right parameters from this .NET app that runs on a separate box? We would like to use DTEXEC to call the remote SSIS packages through Integrated Security. The SSIS packages are stored as File System packages.

Hello :
On my server, I did not install the SQL Server 2005, I have SQL server 2000, thus I did not install Integration Services.
I want to execute one package by line of command DTExec.
I need what to execute this command without installed SSIS?
Thank you.

I am executing a package via vb.net with package.execute using the IDTSEvents interface inheriting DefaultEvents. I am trying to emulate DTExec functionality. The package runs fine and I am catching events, but I don't get nearly as many info and progress events as are put out by DTExec. From my understanding DTExec also used the managedDTS application object, is that not the case? If it uses this does anyone have an ideas on how it is grabbing more events? For example I don't get these events that DTExec shows ..
Info: 2006-09-26 14:22:27.97
Code: 0x40016041
Source: DWB02130
Description: The package is attempting to configure from the XML file "D:SSISConfigurationsDatabase.dtsConfig".
End Info
Info: 2006-09-26 14:22:28.05
Code: 0x40016040
Source: DWB02130
Description: The package is attempting to configure from SQL Server using the configuration string ""Configurations Database";"[dbo].[SSISConfigurations]";"DWB02130";".
End Info
I also don't get as many progress updates during validation, I basically get 0 and 100% while DTExec shows several 1%, 3%, 10%, etc.
Any help is greatly appriciated.
Thanks!

I'm a bit confused. On the command line of the job step property I entered dtexec /SQL... and got an error saying file not found, I assumed dtexec itself couldnt be found. So I tried /SQL .... by itself and got something that looked more like a security error. If I make the step property type "ssis" job appears to run fine, I receive my pkg's on success (rather than on failure) email but I know everything isnt fine because even if no data is ETL'd, first executable is supposed to (and always has in client) insert a row into an audit table and it doesnt. If I set job step "type" to t-sql and simply db email myself with t-sql command, everything is fine.
The first question is "Wouldnt dtexec need to be specified, how else could sqlagent know what I'm trying to run?" If answer is yes, what's wrong with my syntax or environment?

I am finishing a port of a project that was done with RS2000/AS2000/DTS2000. The cube process is triggered remotely by a Korn Shell script from Services for Unix that runs a DTS package:
dtsrun.exe /S "$ANALYSIS_SERVICES_HOST" /U "$ANALYSIS_SERVICES_USER" /P "$ANALYSIS_SERVICES_PASSWORD" /N "$PACKAGE_NAME"
I have finished porting the AS and RS parts to their 2005 equivalents and now I am trying to get the cube processing converted. I have built a SSIS package that processes the cube and I have deployed it to the SQL Server in MSDB. When I am logged on to the SQL Server box directly, I can execute the package via the Management Studio and from the command line via:
dtexec /Ser "$ANALYSIS_SERVICES_HOST" /DT "$PACKAGE_PATH_NAME"
When I try to register the SQL Server in Integration Services from my client PC Management Studio it fails with "Access Denied". When I try to run the dtexec from my client PC it fails with "Access Denied".
I have walked through Kirk Haselden's instructions at:
http://sqljunkies.com/WebLog/knight_reign/archive/2006/01/05/17769.aspx
(adding myself to Distributed COM Users, noting the correct DCom Config settings for MsDtsServer and restarting the Integration Services service) and the problem is still not resolved. I have posted to the DTS group on Technet and now I am posting here. This can not be run scheduled by SQL Agent as it needs to be triggered by other load/postload activities. Are there any other fixes for this problem that I can try?
Thanks,
Keehan
By the way, being able to have all the parts of this project in one dev environment is great. The previous application was developed in 3 separate locations which was pretty clunky.

I have a manager SSIS package that calls a generic loader SSIS package, via the 'Execute Process Task'. The manger package (amongst other things) creates a config file and and then executes DTExec passing the config specification in the Arguments property, i.e. '
'/FILE "D:AudiencePackagesUKDW_Core_Loader_Persist.dtsx" /CONFIGFILE "D:AudienceDataSCPmystery.dtsconfig" /MAXCONCURRENT " -1 " /CHECKPOINTING OFF"
It works as expected, but, I always get the warning message 'File/Process "DTExec" is not in path.', I know that it is because the exe runs and loads the correct package which then performs the correct actions.
Have I dropped the ball here? I cannot see any reason for the warning as DelayValidation==True, I could set RequireFullFileName==True, but I do not know where SQL is installed on the various nodes.
Any input would be warmly received
Thanks

Hi all,
I have a serious problem with my SSIS Package while executing using 32-bit DTExec and 64-bit DTExec.
Here are the details:
Environment:
Windows Server 2003 64-bit (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)
SSIS 32-bit & 64-bit installed
SQL Server 2005 (Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (X64) - RTM)
SSIS Package details (compiled in 64 bit)
Script tasks only
Microsoft Visual Basic .NET (using TRY...CATCH block)
PreCompileScriptIntoBinaryCode = TRUE
Run64BitRunTime = TRUE
Execution
Batch file that uses DTExec to execute the Package.
SCENARIO
I am trying to exeucte the above SSIS package using both 32-bit and 64-bit DTExec to make it failure by providing invalid connection string. Here are the details,
Wrong connection String using 32-bit Execution
While establishing the connection the error message has been nicely captured in to my Exception block and writes into the log file.
Wrong connection String using 64-bit Execution
While establishing the connection the error has not been catpured anywhere (although I have TRY CATCH block) and it haults there itself with the message "Process is terminated due to StackOverflowException". Later I found that the error is due to the connection string along with the unhandled exception.
Please suggest any one of the following my findings, also if you have any other advice would be very much appreciated.
1. Shall I go ahead and fix the issue by handling those unhandled errors? (e.g Appdomain, application). I tried several but still not working using 64-bit DTExec.
2. Shall I go ahead and use 32-bit DTExec to execute the package? If so, is there any other major issue...like performance or anyother bug?
P.S: We cannot apply any service pack for SQL Server 2005 at the moment. Sorry abt it. If you have any specific hotfix for DTExec (without affecting SQL Server) then we can decide.
Sorry for the lengthy one and Thanks very much for you help in advance .
Thanks again!

OS: Windows 2012, standard, 64-bit
SQL: 2012 + SP1 + CU2 = 11.0.3339
We recently decided to "break apart" our BI environment. We used to have everything on one box, DB Engine, SSIS, SSAS & SSRS. Everything has been running fine, but we now have other projects using these services, so we decided to break them apart into their own boxes.
We now have DB Engine on one Server, SSIS & SSRS on another server and SSAS on yet another server, so we now have three boxes that replaced one box. All are Windows 2012, standard, 64-bit with SQL Server 2012 + SP1 + CU2.
Since some of our SSIS packages have to access external resources, we used a domain account for it's service account. The DB Engine and SSAS box are using the default service accounts when installed. I can execute the packages fine on the SSIS server, I can even execute them via SQL Agent jobs on the SSIS box (we did install a default instance of SQL on the SSIS box), however when I try to execute a package from my laptop, it fails with the ugly "Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYANONYMOUS LOGON'".
I immediately double checked my SPNs and they all looked correct for the SSIS server and the service account we are using (and we had no duplicates). I also double checked the User Rights Assignment in the Local policy editor and all the correct Rights have been assigned (Log on as a service, Bypass traverse checking, Impersonate a client after authentication).

Hi,
Is that possible to execute SSIS packages from a remote SQL Server 2005 in another domain at local computer (Windows XP)?
Can I use SQL authentication to connect to the remote SSIS? My problem is, the user who execute the SSIS is not allow to access to SQL server directly. Is that possible to code everything in a batch file instead?
I tried to use web services to execute the remote SSIS but it always return "authentication error"?
Can someone help?
Many thanks!

Hi all,
Criteria:
We connect to the remote database servers through the network from loca by using Query Analyzer.
Previously we were able to execute the xp_cmdshell command from local Query Analyzer to fetch the remote databases data.
But now we are unable to execute the xp_cmdshell command on remote databases from local Query Analyzer
We do not know what happened but i think due to network updates this command is not able to execute...
For ex:
Previously i was able to execute master..xp_cmdshell 'net start' from local Query Analyzer. But now not able to execute
Now my question is, is there any other way(Directly or indirectly) to execute the xp_cmdshell command on remote databases from local?
Note : we are able to execute this command on remote Query Analyzer but not from local QA
Any suggestions would be very very helpful to me?
Thanks in advance,

Good afternoon-
Can a batch file that resides on another server be executed from a different machine? I have a batch file that resides on a server that I would like to run using SQL 2005 Integration Services. Is there anything I can do that would allow me to remotely execute this batch file and have it run in that environment.
BATCH FILE:
cd C:Trandev
otrun -at OTRecogn.att -DINPUT_FILE=%1 -tl 1 -cs dv -lg mylog -I
C:Trandev represents the remote environment
I have tried mapping the remote machine to a network drive on my local machine and using that drive to execute the batch file in an Execute Process Task, but it does not work.
SSIS:
I have a FOR EACH loop grabbing files and writing fileName to a variable that is passed to the Process Task as an argument through an expression(%1 in the batch file above). The Working Directory is a mapped network drive. The Executable is also a network drive plus batch file name.
Any help would be appreciated.
My computer is a HP Compaq dc7100, 512mb RAM, WindowsXP

I have a remote batch file on machine B that I need to execute using 'Execute process task' control from a package on machine A. The batch file uses pgp software and encrypts a file sitting on machine B itself. The reason why my batch file is sitting on machine B, is because the PGP software is on machine B.
If I execute the batch file by itself from machine B, the script runs fine. I refer the same batch file as a UNC path from my package on machine A. But that does not work since the 'Working directory' is still machine A. I can not set machine B's folder as the working dir because it does not accept UNC path. So I say, ok , let me map a path to that UNC location and map it as drive 'Z:'. Certainly if I do so, I will be running the process on machine A and the batch file will look for the pgp software on machine A, and hence fail.
I have tried third party remote batch execution tools (PSEXEC) but have not had success, not because of SSIS limitations, but simply because the PGP executable when run through the PSEXEC tool, does not identify the location of the public keys on machine B and hence gives an encrytion failure.
How do I get the remote batch file to execute such that it executes with its own env? Is there a better remote execution tool I can try or are there any other features of SSIS I can use to get around this issue? I need the results of the batch file and hence do not want to make it an asyncronous process.
Thanks
Sumeet

UPDATE CD SET col1=SR.col1,col2=SR.col2,col3=SR.col3,col4=SR.col4,col5=SR.col5,col6=SR.col6,col7=SR.col7,
col8=SR.col8,col9=SR.col9,col10=SR.col10
FROM LNKSQL1.db1.DBO.Table1 CD
join Table2 USRI on USRI.col00 = CD.col00
join table3 SR on USRI.col00 = SR.col00
Here, I'm trying to tun this from an instance and do a remote update. col00 is a primary key and there is a clustered index that exists on this column. When I run this query, it does a 'select * from tabl1' on the remote server and that table has about 60 million rows. I don't understand why it would do a select *... Also, we migrated to SQL 2005 a week or so back but before that everything was running smooth. I dont have the execution plan from before but this statement was fast. Right now, I can't run this statement at all. It takes about 37 secs to do one update. But if I did the update on a local server doing remote joins here, it would work fine. When I tried to show the execution plan, it took about 10 mins to show up an estimated plan and 99% of the time was spent on Remote scan. Please let me know what I can do to improve my situation. Thank you

I have written a VB component to execute a SSIS package stored in SQL server.
I am using the Microsoft.sqlserver.dts.dtsclient, dtsconnection/dtscommand
and executereader and everything works perfect on the local machine. This is descibed in a msdn site .
But my customer have a remote SQL server and want no extra BI clients/SQL server clients etc on the client machine, only an ordinary windows client and network connection to the SQL server.
My question is: Can you still use dtsclient or do you have to do in some other way?

Hello,
I have a command line as following, with DTEXEC to launch the execution of a package and to set a value (13335) of an user variable called CIB (string type):
dtexec /f c: empPackageInsert.dtsx
/set PackageDataFlowTask.Variables[Utilisateur::CIB].Properties[Value];13335
But I have got an error message saying that the object is not known in the package. My variable does exist in the variable window of the dataflow part.
Thank you for telling me what to set so that the variable can be set by the command line.

I understand to schedule an SSIS package to run, I need to use the dtexec utility. I want to schedule the job right within SQL. I walked through how to set up the job, but I really could not decipher the proper syntax to use as a Step.
I have the following:
dtexec /File "C:...file.dtsx"
Is the the proper way to schedule and execute an SSIS package or is there some other way I should be doing this. The pacakge will run unattended nightly. I am using SQL Server 2005.

This was directly from BOL.
/Conf[igFile] filespec
(Optional). Specifies a configuration file to extract values from. Using this option, you can set a run-time configuration that differs from the configuration that was specified at design time for the package. You can store different configuration settings in an XML configuration file and then load the settings before package execution by using the /ConfigFile option.
Does this mean that I can specify which configuration file to use during runtime?
Or is just because I'm too desperate for that, I understood that way
Thanks

Hi,
The DTEXEC Utility has the capability of returning ReturnCodes which have specific meanings e.g.
ReturnCode=3 means: The package was canceled by the user.
Is it possible to set my own ReturnCode values?
For example, my Package contains a Script Task which contains code to search a folder for a file. If the file cannot be found then I make the Script Task fail and hence the Package fails. But, when the Package is invoked by the DTEXEC utility, then the ReturnCode is always set to 1. Is it posssible to set the ReturnCode from within the Package (in, say, a Script Task in the Event Handler) to a different value?
It is necessary to be able to set custom application-specific return codes because these return codes are passed to the Batch Scheduler which alerts Operations (Support) staff in the event of failure. Meaningful (custom) ReturnCodes expedite problem solving and are (usually) mandatory in large production environments.
If it is not possible to make a Package return my own returncodes via DTEXEC then can you suggest alternative solutions, please?
Thanks.

Hi All,
I'm trying to execute DTExec from a workstation and I got some help from a different group without luck maybe someone here can help me.
This is what I try so far.
1. My package run in command line from my sql box using dtexec with
parameters.
2. Set the package with DontSaveSensitive and import into IS under MSDB with
the same option setup.
3. Set package role to public.
4. Share DTS folder with everyone permission just for testing.
5. Execute the package from a workstation using
//sqlServerbox/DTS/BINN/dtexec /dts "msdb/mypackage" /SER "MySQLServer" /set
package.variables[myvariable].Value;"myvalue1,myvalue2"
(myvariable is string and I can pass multiple values separate by commas)
6. Still getting error:

I can't crack this problem and my Google-Fu is failing me. I am using DTEXEC from a stored procedure to set a global variable in an SSIS package and execute the SSIS package, but I am getting an error. I will include the SQL code and the error that I am getting:
Code:

All the examples I find over DTEXEC seem to follow what I am doing in the code and making variables in an SSIS package isn't rocket science, so I don't understand where I am going wrong.
I have seen people suggest indirect configuration as a solution, but when I set it up (using the environmental variable TEMP from the dropdown) it doesn't seem to help anything. I have used the exact path from the configuration wizard, though, so I'm pretty sure I have the path right.
Can anybody spare a clue?
