DTS Error When Converting Text To Date
Nov 2, 2004
When converting a text into a date format using the DateTime String transformation I get the following error.
'The number of failing rows exceeds the maximum specified.
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Invalid date format'
The dates is stored as a text like this: mmddyy and I want to convert it to a date field in the table. Any help would be great.

Good Morning Forum
First time poster here, but I have gleaned much needed support using the forum in the past, so
many thanks to all.
Well, on to business.
I have a strange problem with a T-SQL stored procedure my company uses for reporting.
Around the Christmas holiday period, it just stopped working.
I managed to track the error down to the code below:
(Just the code to recreate the error.)
declare
@g datetime,
@g2 datetime
select @g2=getdate()
select @g=convert(datetime,convert(varchar(10),@g2,101))
select @g,@g2 , SERVERPROPERTY('PRODUCTVERSION'), SERVERPROPERTY ('PRODUCTLEVEL'), SERVERPROPERTY ('EDITION')
When this is run, I get this error message:
Msg 242, Level 16, State 3, Line 6
The conversion of a char data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value.
Here is the About information from .
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 9.00.1399.00
Microsoft Analysis Services Client Tools 2005.090.1399.00
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2000.085.1117.00 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
Microsoft MSXML 2.6 3.0 5.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.13
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.1433
Operating System 5.1.2600
I know this is not the best way to use datetime or conversions, but I did not write it, I am just supporting it.
The strange thing is, the above code has worked every week since January 2006?
The even stranger thing is, it runs on perfectly well on Server 2000 and on the version below that has not had
any recent service packs installed.
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 9.00.3042.00
Microsoft Analysis Services Client Tools 2005.090.3042.00
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2000.086.1830.00 (srv03_sp1_rtm.050324-1447)
Microsoft MSXML 2.6 3.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0.3790.1830
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.42
Operating System 5.2.3790
Is this a bug, or have I lost the plot?
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
P.S: The style code 101, if changed to 103 allows the code to work. But, when apllied to the pre-RTM server, is
returns the same error message.

I've imported a CSV file into a table in SQL Server 2012. It's a large file, 140,000+ rows, so I couldn't covert it to Excel first to preserve the date format due to Excel's row limit. In the CSV file, there were 3 column with date data in "31-Aug-09" format, and the import automatically transformed these in "31AUG09" format (varchar(50)) in SQL Server. Now I need to convert these 3 columns from varchar to datetime so I could work with them in date format.
I've tried several things,e.g,
select
convert(datetime,
right(admdate,4)+left(admdate,2)+substring(admdate,3,3))
or
select
convert(datetime,
substring(admdate,6,4)+substring(admdate,1,2)+substring(admdate,3,3))
but keep getting the same error message (Msg 241) "Conversion failed when converting date and/or time from character string".

I am populating oracle source in Sql Server Destination. after few rows it fails it displays this error:
[OLE DB Destination [16]] Error: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_OLEDBERROR. An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80004005. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server" Hresult: 0x80004005 Description:
"Invalid date format".
I used this script component using the following code in between the adapters, However after 9,500 rows it failed again giving the same above error:
To convert Oracle timestamp to Sql Server timestamp
If Row.CALCULATEDETADATECUST_IsNull = False Then
If IsDate(DateSerial(Row.CALCULATEDETADATECUST.Year, Row.CALCULATEDETADATECUST.Month, Row.CALCULATEDETADATECUST.Day)) Then
dt = Row.CALCULATEDETADATECUST
Row.CALCULATEDETADATECUSTD = dt
End If
End If
I don't know if my code is right . Please inform, how i can achieve this.

I am trying to convert a decimal date value to a date value that I can use in formulas but am having a lot of trouble. My date value currently shows in decimal format YYYYMMDD. I want to convert this to a date so I can then find the number of days between two dates.I have tried convert (datetime, convert(varchar(8),left(qhstdt,8))) with qhstdt as my decimal date field but I receive the error message below:
Error: SQL0204 - CONVERT in *LIBL type *N not found.
I have also tried converting it using (year(QHSTDT)*10000+100*month(QHSTDT)+ day(QHSTDT))) but when I convert the dates using this formula, I can get an incorrect number of days when I try to subtract one from the other. What formula can I use to convert my YYYYMMDD field to a format that will allow me to compare number of days between two dates?

I have a database table with 2 numeric fields. The values to be inserted into these fields come from text boxes in an ASP.NET page. So in the parameters to add into these fields I simply use 'textbox1.text' & textbox2.text'.
One of the fields accepts the data within the text box and adds it into the appropriate numeric data field in the table. However on the other text box I get an error message 'Error converting data type nvarchar to numeric.'
Does anyone know why this occurs just on the one entry and not the other?, and if anyone has any suggestions on how to get around this please let me know.
Many Thanks

Hi,I have two tables. One of them has a text field, and the other has a numeric(integer) field that serves a similar purpose. I want to connect (UNIONactually) the two tables, and store the text from the first table in thesame field as the number from the other. For example:SELECT TextID AS IDFROM W1UNIONSELECT NumericID AS IDFROM W2The above query results in a type mismatch error due to trying to store anInt in a text field. I have tried the SQL CONVERT function, but the docsseem to indicate that it is just for Dates. In any case, it hasn't workedfor me.Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi all,
My organization have a web-based application and needs it to support multilingual so we will be adapting our app to use unicode. However, one of our problems is to convert existing data from text to ntext. I couldn't find anything that document this. What is the best way to do that? I would like to be able to migrate the data from an existing text column to another ntext column in the table.
If I can't do that, what are the options? If it's possible, I would like to be able to do this in sql script.
Thanks a mil, in advance.

Hello all,
New to the forums here. I'm not a beginner with SQL, but nor am I a SQL developer - network engineer who knows some scripting and the fundamentals of DB design/administration. There's the background.
I have a database of client information where a date is keyed in and stored as text. Because this is entered by end-users, the way it's entered varies - 1/1/2001, 01/01/2001, etc. Most use "1/1/2001" (note the date is not the same for each record)
I have 4,000 records to update and I need to try to convert the text string to the correct date - changing 1/1/2005 to the same date in proper date/time format. My database uses datetime as an integer calculating the number of days from 12/30/1800. Today's date would be 75508. Time is separated into different fields.
I can do the work to update the text to a single format to make the conversion easier, but I am having trouble locating the proper way to write a convert function to do this. I've searched online (which is how I came here) and have searched the forums without luck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I would like to convert '9A' to be 09:00AM, so that I can sort by that converted field.
'12P to be 12:00PM and so on....
I have tried various form of case with substring and convert commands, but cant' get the solution. I can not change text field to varchar in table.

Hi,
Basically the above is a very common requirement, please comment on my solution which I've arrived at by searching through the web; -
In summary I have used 3 SSIS components these are "Flat File Source", "Derived Column" and "SQL Server Destination".
1) File Connections Manager Editor
1.1) Within File Connections Manager Editor; -
Name the data type e.g. "INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE_SRC"
and assign a type to the data type e.g. string[DT_STR]
1.2) Click on the Preview button to ensure the expected text is assigned to the expected data type.
2) Derived Column Transformation Editor
2.1) Assign Derived Column Name, e.g.
INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE
2.2) Select <add as new column> within Derived Column.
2.3) Enter the conversion Expression, e.g. ; -
2.3.1)
(SUBSTRING(INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE_SRC,8,2) + "/" + SUBSTRING(INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE_SRC,5,2) + "/" + SUBSTRING(INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE_SRC,1,4))
2.3.2)
Since the above conversion is such a common task I suggest that Service Pack 3 of SQL Server 2005 delivers the following functionality; -
STRINGTODATE ('YYYYMMDD',INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE_SRC)
2.4) Select "database timestamp [DT_DBTIMESTAMP] " as Data Type.
2.5) Within the Mappings tab of the SQL Destination Editor have; -
Input Column as INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE and
Destination Column as INTERCHANGE_NET_APP_DATE.
Please comment on the above, I will then pass on my suggestion to Microsoft.
Thanks in advance,
Kieran.

I asked this question below, but the answer was that the conversion will take place automatically, but I can't get that to happen. I have a flat file with an 8 position field that I identify as string (and I also tried date) that is yyyymmdd and it needs to go into the database field that is datetime format. IS there something I am doing wrong with the definition of it, or do I need to add some kind of conversion, and if so, what and how would that be done. I'm a dts Sql2000 expert, but the SSIS thing is driving me crazy. I have a ton of dts' to convert and the migration tool doesn't work because there are a lot of active X scripts in them. thanks for your help. Boston Rose

Hi ya... About to tear my hair out.
I thought i fixed this problem, as it WORKED about two days ago, but now I'm getting errors.
I have a series of text files, some are delimited, some are fixed width. I previously was able to import these files thru a dts package by creating the table in a stored procedure. Exple:
CREATE TABLE [Pol_Dump073104]
(
[Product_Type] varchar (12) NULL,
[Benefit] float NULL,
[Base_Premium] varchar (12) NULL,
[Rider_Premium] float NULL,
[Contract_Value] float NULL,
)
I then import the text file into the table and then cast the float datatypes as money in a select into statement to do aggregate functions on the money fields. this worked previously, but now I'm receiving this: 'Error converting datatype char to money.' I tried to convert to float and received the same error, only with float where the word money was.
Please help!
Thanks

I have a csv file and I would like to load this file by SSIS in SQL Server.
One column of this file contains xml infos (it is about 60000 charachter), and I would like to have an xml column in Table in SQL Server.
From here the only ssis types, which able to contain so much character are DT_NTEXT and DT_TEXT.
If I want to have xml type in the target table in sql server, these both DT_NTEXT and DT_TEXT should be converted to DT_WSTR.
The Problem is: DT_WSTR can only contains 4000 charcters. In my situation with this infos, I can't have an xml column in target table in sql server.
