DTS: One Failure Step For Multiple Process Steps
Dec 17, 2004
How can I make this work?
I have two process steps in a package and one failure step. Both process steps have On Failure workflows to the failure step. The problem I'm having is that it seems if two or more workflows go to the same failure step then neither go to the failure step, but it does go if only one process step is attached to it.
I know I can create duplicate steps for each process step, but I was hoping to be able to do it this way FMI.
Thanks for your assistance.

Is it possible to skip all steps following the script task results (Step 1) in a For Each container. I am iterating thru all the files in a For Each container and parsing a few lines of the file and based on the result I want to force the For Each loop to get to the next file instead of executing the next steps. Is it possible to force the for each loop to get the to the next file if the test criteria in the very first step (Script Task) fails. Any inputs will be much appreciated.
THanks,
MShah

Good day,
I have a Job that runs every half an hour, and has about 30 steps. If a step fails it moves on to the next step (the steps are not dependant on one another)... However I would like to receive notification if that occurs. I have SQL 2005, with database mail enabled and set up (works fine for other jobs)... The question is how do I get it to send me an email if a single step fails, however the job on a whole succeeds?
Do I need to set up a step between each job?
Step 1 An actual step, on failure: step 2 On success Step3
Step 2 A step that emails the failure of step 1, then goes to step 3
Step 3 An actual step
etc etc... Or is there a better way?

Hi,
I have two job J1 and J2, each one has 10 steps. Now I want J2 to be the 11th step of J1 and I did not want manually type all the steps of J2 to be 11-20 step of J2. Is there an easy way through TSQL to do this ?
sp_add_jobstep only works when the step is OS command or a script but not a job

Hi I am facing an issue running an SSIS package on a SQL Server 2005 SP2 machine
Here's more information:
1) The SSIS package that dumps data returned from a stored procedure call to an excel (CSV) file. The package owner is a SQL Login called AppAdmin. The login has user memberships/roles in two databases:
1.1) Database AppDB - Has execute and select permissions.
1.2) Database msdb - SQLAgentUser role
The package has one step that is run as a SSIS Proxy account PrxApp. The Proxy is based on a credential CrdApp which is based on a windows account <domain>AppAccount. This account is part of the Local Administrators group and also has SA rights in on the server. The same account is also used to run all the SQL Server Services on this machine. The machine is part of a 2-node cluster (A/P).
When I try to execute this package (as a schedule or one-off), I am getting the error mentioned in the Subject. I have checked a few posts using google and have acted upon as many suggestions that I possibly could (e.g. change this, change that...did not do any registry modification, etc). Many of these posts have been talking about changing local security policy and adding the user to several groups. Did that, but still does not work in a SQL Agent Job.
The account currently has the following rights (local security policy)
Act as part of OS
Perf. volume maint tasks
Lock pages in memory
Replace process level token
One thing that I did notice and don't know if that affects the issue is that the following groups (and SQL Logins) are missing from my Windows groups listing (Computer ManagementUsers and GroupsGroups). Note that this is a Windows 2003 machine.
(a) SQLServer2005MSSQLUser$<machine_name>
(b) SQLServer2005SQLAgentUser$<machine_name>
Now these groups (and logins in SQL Server) do exist on some other SQL2005 machines that I have checked to see what could be wrong.
Any help at all is greatly appreciated. If you need any more information please let me know.
Thanks

Hi Team,
I've recently had a situation where some of the steps in the daily backup job failed. The job is defined such that if a step fails, it goes on to the next step (these are dev. backups :)
Is there a way that I can tell it to notfy me of the step failure AND go on to the next step? The notification is reporting that the job was successful when in fact a couple of the steps failed. Is there any way around this?
Thanks in advance,

My end game is to automate some of my monthly queries in a Job in SQL Server Agent. Right now I have two metric tables. One table is the name and comment with the PK. The secondary table is attributes/detail, such as reporting month, target and actuals.
I am currently running all different types of queries to get the aggregates. I'd like to get these into a job so it would run automatically and update the reporting table.
Would you recommend making one step or multiple steps for each query? I am trying to use an intelligent approach to begin to load the tables.

Hi,
Previously I was performing the process of populating my DataMart and then processing my cubes via 2 separate job scheduled one after the other and with about 30 minutes idle time in-between (just in case).
I now have tried to make a single job with both of the above as 2 steps (one after the other) of a single job.
However when I was done, I did a right click and tried to run the newly created job but instead of what I was hoping (that the job would start, would perform the 1st step, followed by the 2nd), it instead popped up a dialog box asking (I think) which step needs to be executed :(
Is there a solution so that when the job is scheduled to run, it should start performing the steps in the order rather than waiting for someone to select which step to perform.
Will really appreciate urgent reply.

High everybody,
I have a set of winforms (.NET 2.0 assemblies) ( 6 total ) that each tries to open a connection to the same Database file using the same connection string. In the connection string, UserInstance is set to true.
If each winform is started manually after opening the session on the computer, the connection to the database performs well for every winform.
If the same winforms are automatically started at the opening of the user session, the the following error is reported by each application when trying to open the connection :
Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.
The only way to overcome this problem is :
to stop the winforms, to stop the SQLExpress service, to kill the remaining sqlserv.exe running task, then restarting SQLExpress service, and finally manualy start the winforms.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One of our users is getting this error message.
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers (0x80040E21) Multiple-step OLE DB operation
generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done.
This is the only user that is currently getting the message. Last week another user got this one day and then it stopped.
Inside VB6 code, we're sending some filters to an ASP that in turn sends a SELECT based on those parameters the SQL database and we get data back to the program.
Stepped through the code and found the error returns after this line
oSqlServConn.Open "Provider=MSDAOSP;Data Source=MSXML2.DSOControl.2.6"
Any thoughts out in ForumLand? Please take it easy on me since I didn't write most of this code. Just trying to solve the problem. :)

Here's the connection string I'm using:
strDbConn = "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=" & _

"Trusted_Connection=Yes;providerName=System.Data.SqlClient"
What can I do correct this problem?

Hello....
I have two linked server... (ServerB and ServerC) which reside on ServerA. I am able to connect to the remote database using "Select" statements without any issues.
When I run this query, It is successful:
delete [SERVERB].MyDatabase.dbo.TableName
from [SERVERB].MyDatabase.dbo.TableName t1
Left join MyDatabase.dbo.TableName t2 on ( t1.ID = t2.ID and
t1.EmployeeNumber = t2.EmployeeNumber and
t1.AccountNumber = t2.AccountNumber)
where t2.ID is null;
However, when I change [SERVERB] to [SERVERC], I receive two errors:
"Could not find server 'ELEARN-FRM-BETA' in sysservers. Execute sp_addlinkedserver to add the server to sysservers."
And
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "ELEARN-FRM-BETA" returned message "Multiple-step OLE DB operation generated errors. Check each OLE DB status value, if available. No work was done.".
When I run profiler on ServerC, I see traffic... mainly a whole bunch of exec "sp_cursorfetch" operations, so I know the connection is valid.
Any ideas?

A project I'm working on consists of a Main stored procedure which then runs about 30 nested procedures. The client wants to know when a certain nested SP fails, but wihtout rollbacks, as they may want to fix a data item manually (such as a missing Patient ID, that they have to call someone about). At this point, we don't want to roll back anything but halt the rest of the nested SP's and send out an email to someone that they have to check out a missing PatientID.
I'm wondering if an SSIS package would handle this better than just using a Stored Procedure. When that SP runs, it will also update a "Process tracking" table in the backend, that would update [Lastprocessran] with a number. I'm thinking that if they run the main SP again, after making a manual correction, that they could re-run the main SP, and it would bypass any step that already ran successfully based upon the [Lastprocessrun] number.

Hi All,
I have a field 'Rowguid' of type uniqueidentifier in a table. This field is the last field in the table. In this case if I update a record through the application I don't get any error. Suppose if there are additional fields after the field Rowguid I get the error "Multiple-Step operation cannot be generated Check each status value"
For your reference I have used the following statement to add the RowGuid field
Alter table <tablename>
Add RowGuid uniqueidentifier ROWGUIDCOL NOT NULL Default (newid())
Can anyone please help me.
Thanks

In BIDS, open up solution and tried to rerun package again - no way,".. cannot acquire connection from connection manager blah blah blah.."
Even tried to fire package without debugging, it fires 32 bid execution utility, so no question about 64 bit mode.. package failed..

I have a package that has multiple data flow tasks. At the end of a task, key data is written into a raw file (file name stored in a variable) that is used as a data source for the next task. Each task requires a success from the preceding task.
Here's the rub:
If I execute the entire package, the results of the package (number of records of certain tasks) differs significantly from when I execute each step in the package in turn (many more records e.g. 5 vs 350).
I get the feeling that the Raw file is read into memory before it is flushed by the previous task, or that the next task begins preparation tasks too early.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
I am running on Server 2003 64 (although the same thing happens when deployed on a Server 2003 32 machine)
Thanks
B.

Hi!
I hope the answer is as simple as the question -- but after reading all the documentation I could find (understand?) and a lot of posts here, I'm no closer to achieving the goal.
I have a Visual C# app, DAYTRACKER, developed in VS2005. It uses a database with several tables constructed using SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition.
I want to deploy the app plus the database plus SQL Express to another machine, to be used by a single user (the administrator) with no need for network connectivity of any kind.
What I have so far is:
1. The application is successfully deployed from a CD-ROM, having used the Publish process within VS2005, and opens on the new machine -- without database connectivity, however.
2. SQL Express is successfully deployed (it deployed as a 'prerequisite' when I went through the Publish process in VS2005)
3. I manually copied the database's .mdf and .mdl files, using SQL Server Managers 'Copy Database' function, then transferred the copies to the new machine into the ..MSSQL.1MSSQLdata folder (where they appear along with the master.mdg, mastlog.ldf etc files)
Now, the DAYTRACKER application's DAYTRACKERConnectionString under 'Settings' in the VS2005 studio reads 'Data Source=DELL3;Initial Catalog=DayTracker;Integrated Security=True' (which are the appropriate parameters for the machine, DELL3, on which I wrote the program.)
The problem, of course, is that SQL Express on the new machine doesn't connect the application to the database. When I go to the 'SQL Server Configuration Manager' and go to the 'SQL Server 2005 Services' and double-click on the 'SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS)' icon (the service is running) and the user is logged on using 'Local System Account'. Under the 'Service' tab the Host Name is 'MUSIC' (which is the name of the new machine I've installed the app onto -- which of course is not the name - DELL3 - that the app's connection string is expecting). Under the 'Advanced' tab, I've tried correcting the name of the Startup Parameters default .mdf and .mdl entries to ..DayTracker.mdf and ..DayTracker_log.mdl, but the server won't start up after I make the changes.
What I'm hoping for: a step-by-step way of doing this type of deployment, preferable getting it all onto one CD-ROM, and installing it on the new machine so that it all works seamlessly from the start, not requiring any 'tweaking' of the SQLServer Express settings by the end-user.
But I'll take pretty much anything that fixes the specific db connectivity problem I've described.
Thank you very much.
John F.
