DTS Packages And SQL 2005 Upgrade/issues

Apr 21, 2007

Case one - upgrade from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005 in the same box

(actually it is a copy of the test box being upgraded)

Case two - install fresh SQL 2005 in a different box

Results for running (dts packages migrated to dtsx) in SSIS from a job

Note all other jobs in (Case one) using the old DTSRUN works fine, but new jobs trying to run migrated packages fail. Migrating this new package to (Case two) runs. How do I troubleshoot this? The process exit code was -532459699.

Is this exit code something that can be looked up?

Support For SQL DTS Packages Post Upgrade To SQL 2005

Feb 15, 2007

Hi,

I am unclear on Microsofts policy regarding support for DTS and packages that have been imported (but not migrated) to SQL 2005.

The upgrade advisor states
SQL Server 2000 Data Transformation Services
Advisory
SQL Server 2000 Data Transformation Services is deprecated  You must completely migrate existing SQL Server 2000 Data Transformation Services (DTS) packages to SQL Server 2005 Integration Services packages before support is withdrawn.

Source Type: MSDB Package

What does this really mean?  What will happen to the importing of legacy packages and this whole area within Management Studio? Will these 2005 features no longer be supported? What will happen to the Execute 2000 task?  If I upgrade a SQL 2000 instance post 08/04/08 does this mean that I won't receive support from Microsoft even though the package post installation is in SQL 2005.  Will the new dts designer in the feature pack be taken away/withdrawn?

To say DTS packages will no longer be supported is a very dramatic statement with far reaching consequences.  How is this going to be effectively implemented?  Is there really going to be no backward compatibility support in Katmai?

Cheers, James

Where To Keep Dts(s) If I Don't To Upgrade Them Packages In Sql2005

Nov 30, 2005

Hi,
reading BOL of 2005 and have few questions about dts and SSIS

question #1
if I don't want to upgrade my DTS to SSIS ,no way I can save it in
msdb of 2005 ,so I have to do following

1. DTS package have to be saved as a COM-structured storage file
2. execute dts as dtsrun /Ffilename /Npackage_name /Mpackage_password

Am I right or missing some options ?

question #2
If I want to modify package in 2005 I have to do following
1. Export package to file from msdb
2. Use Studio to modify and test it
3. Drop package from msdb
4. Import package to msdb from file

Thanks

HIS Upgrade Breaks SSIS Packages

Apr 14, 2008

Hi,

we have some SSIS packages using a dataflow sourcing data from DB2 using an oledb connection. These were working when we were using the oledb for DB2 drivers as supplied in HIS2004, but since upgrading to HIS2006 some of these dataflows are failing with the error shown below.

Also a DTS package running the same query against the same database(s) is working fine.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Do we need a patch?

The error text we're seeing is:

[OLE DB Source [1380]] Error: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x80040E14. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft DB2 OLE DB Provider" Hresult: 0x80040E14 Description: "".

[DTS.Pipeline] Error: The PrimeOutput method on component "OLE DB Source" (1380) returned error code 0xC0202009. The component returned a failure code when the pipeline engine called PrimeOutput(). The meaning of the failure code is defined by the component, but the error is fatal and the pipeline stopped executing.

SQL 2005 Upgrade Problem - In Place Upgrade

We are running a test upgrade form sql 2000 standard edition 32 bit to sql 2005 developer edition 32bit. Followed through all the steps and specified the account(SA priveleges and currently used by the 2000 version) and is the local admin on the box for the services and the setup seemed to move fine, except for when it got to the point of installing database services - This is the error message that I got:

The Bane Of Sql 2005 Express... Spending Life Attempting To Upgrade To SQL 2005.

Jan 16, 2008

I am out of brain cells.  I can not figure out how to upgrade instances of sql express to sql 2005 or even add an instance of sql 2005.  I have installed/upgraded everything else (SSMS, etc.) to SQL 2005.
I am dazed and confused.  I don't even know where to start in explaining what I have tried and done.  I have 303 log files going back to 3/27/2007 from various attempts.
Where do I start in figuring this debacle out???

Upgrade From SQL Express 2005 Report Server With Advanced Services To SQL 2005 Standard Fails

Feb 25, 2008

I am trying to upgrade SQL Server Express 2005 Report Server to SQL 2005 Standard and it fails with the following error:

SQL Server Setup did not have the administrator permissions required to copy a file: C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting ServicesReportServer
ssrvpolicy.config. To continue, verify that the file exists, and either grant administrator permissions to the account currently running Setup or log in with an administrator account. Then run SQL Server Setup again.

After I click OK on the message, this whole path where the upgrade is bieng installed dissapears C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.8Reporting Services. The error is a bit missleading because the file that it is trying to copy rssrvpolicy.config does appear in that upgrade folder so I am not sure why it would try to copy a file that has already been copied.

I was able to upgrade the Database Engine instance fine but can't upgrade Reporting Services due to that error. I have verified that the account that ran the setup had the administrator permissions. Your prompt reply to my question would be greatly appreciatted.

(As a Preparation to install SQLServer2005 Service Pack 2 (CTP))

I tried to upgrade a particular Instance (OFFICESERVERS, which was based on SQL Server 2005 Express ).

During the upgrade I get a message saying that ...

Expired SQL 2005 Evaluation Upgrade To SQL 2005 Standard

Mar 12, 2008

I've been reading and looking over what to do for my situation for several days. I need to ask and see if I can get a clear answer.

My Scenario:
I have a SQL Server 2005 Eval installed that is currently running with live data. I need to upgrade that to a recently-purchased full version. I have several databases set up. I have ready the article 914158 that states it will fail. It's still running so I can access everything. If I restart or stop the service I'm screwed.

That do I do?

Thanks so much!

I have successfully upgraded my SQL Server 2000 Databases SQL 2005. After the successful upgrade I also migrated all of my SQL 2000 DTS packages using SQL Management Studio -> Management -> Legacy. I can see all these DTS packages and I can also run these.

How can I OPEN these DTS Packages in SSIS (Business Intelligence) for me to make the changes? I am not able to open them and also not able to see them File->open. All these DTS packages are stored in MSDB database.

Upgrade From SQL 7 To SQL 2005

Jun 20, 2006

I'm planning to upgrade a SQL server 7 database to a new server with SQL 2005 soon.

I will follow the migration path for the upgrade and my question has to do with my back-out plan.

When we go live on a Monday morning, I will leave my SQL server 7 box n stand-by mode in case anything goes wrong with the new server.

Is there a way to get the new data back into my stand-by SQL server 7 in case the new SQL 2005 server has issues after going live?

Let's say the new server runs for two hours and I need to revert back to my SQL 7 server, What would be the best approach for this scenario???

Thanks

SQL 2005 Upgrade

Aug 17, 2006

Hi all,

We need to update our SQL 2000 to 2005. We plan to use it on a computer with 2 processors. Actually we update 2 servers that form a cluster, running web applications.
I think there is no update version from 2000 to 2005. So we have to buy 2 full versions of SQL 2005? For our case it's probably best to buy SQL 1CPU version? But we have 2 processors on each server. Is there a CPU license? Do we have to buy 2 SQL 2005 1CPU plus 2 licenses for 1 (more) CPU?
Sorry, I am not so familiar with SQL. I am not the guy making the upgrade. I just have to order the correct version and licenses.

SQL 2005 Upgrade

Nov 15, 2007

We currently have a deployment of SQL 2000 on three production 32 Bit servers. One server to house the Data, one server for Analysis Service Cubes, and one for Reporting Services. At the time of this deployment, this was Microsoft's recommendation.

If we upgrade to SQL 2005 and also upgrade our systems to 64 Bit systems. What are the recommendations for Analysis Services and Reporting Services? Do they still require separate servers or can they reside on the same server?

MIgrating DTS Packages Of SQL 2000 To SQL 2005

Jan 5, 2007

Hello All,

I am working on a migration project of my database(lets name it DB1), from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005. I have some DTS packages in my SQL 2000 database which also needs to be migrated to SSIS. These DTS packages currently interacts with other database(lets name it DB2) which is also in SQL 2000 and which does the data transmission. The real issue is that the other database(DB2) also has some DTS packages which also communicates with DB1 (the db to be upgraded) and so when i migrate my DB1 to SQL 2005, i will have to change my DB2 packages also (although the change will be minor). Now considering that in future I might also migrate my DB2 to SQL 2005 I wanted to know what will be the right approach to follow. One is to modify the DTS packages of DB2 to accmodate the change in connection and the other is to migrate the DTS packages of DB2 also to SSIS.

Can anyone help me with this one.

Thanks in Advance

Mitesh
