DTSInstall Fails Validation

Mar 18, 2008

Problem:
When migrating packages to production using the DTSInstall program, phantom validation warnings are occurring.

Background /Installation options
We use the DTSInstall program to migrate code to our DEV, QA, and Production servers. Our migration process includes saving the package to the SQL server (msdb) and validating the package after install. In our most recent production migration, the package being migrated encountered warnings when validating after the install ("The package path referenced an object that cannot be found...") This warning seems to mean that I have configuration that cannot find an object to configure in the package. This error did not occur in other environments with the same code and configuration.

Troubleshooting performed:
1. Validate that configuration in all environments matched (ie. PackagePath was identical in all environments).
2. Opened the package on production server in Visual Studio, and received same warning message.
3. Executed the package in production using the validate only option: no validation warnings found.
4. Executed the package in production; package ran successfully and as expected.
5. Migrated the package from QA using dtutil and executed the package in production using the validate only option; no validation warnings found.

At this point I think I may have a problem with the DTSInstall program or the Visual Studio environment on our production box? Does DTSInstall use any parts of Visual Studio when running? Anything I am missing?

XML Task - Validation Fails

Oct 31, 2006

Now is this a limitation in SSIS or am I missing something. I have an XML file that needs validation. I am using the 'XML Task' control for that. The validation runs fine so long as the file is below a certain size. I am not sure what the cutoff size is but the validation runs fine if the XML file size is 60Mb. I include a few more records in my XML file to make the file size 65Mb and run ETL again and validation fails!

There is not much detail in the error message other than 'Task XML Validation failed'. I dont think there should be any kind of timeout issue. The whole process takes less than a minute before failing.

The issue is definately not with the new records that get added. I have verified the new file with xmlspy and it validates just fine. I have also validated the newly added records (5 Mb) through the same ETL process and that runs fine too.

Please suggest if I should spend time finding what the issue is or simply move on assuming its a known bug? Has any one experienced this?

Thanks,

Sumeet

Checking For Existence Of File Fails During Validation

Aug 29, 2007

OK. Here's my situation. I check for the existence of a dummy .txt file using a script. I send an e-mail if it does not exist and exit package. The .txt file only exists if another .xls file is present which I import. However, during the validation phase of the package, the package fails because the .xls file does not exist. Is there a way to bypass the validation step? The only solution I came up with is to have a two-step job. The first runs the file check step and sends the e-mail. The second attemps to run the package and fails. Not a very graceful exit.

Help With DTSInstall.exe

Nov 29, 2005

All I need to do is copy a deployment package that I created with Visual Studio 2005 to another server location, installed in that server's file system (not msdb).  I am hoping to use a simple deployment script, but I can't find any info on how to call dtsinstall.exe to automate this for me.  I keep reading references to this utility, but how does one use it in silent mode and send it parameters?  At the command prompt, typing dtsinstall /? gives an error rather than helpful info.  Am i missing something?

Execute Package Fails Due To Package Validation

May 16, 2006

There is an execute package task that calls the child package. Both parent and child packages have the same password and the passwork is entered into the execute package task. Both packages reside in the same directory path.

Error: Error 0xC0012050 while loading package file "C:Documents and SettingsuserMy DocumentsVisual Studio 2005ProjectsExecutePackageTestExecutePackageTestExtractandWrite.dtsx". Package failed validation from the ExecutePackage task. The package cannot run.

When ExtractandWrite.dtsx is executed by right-clicking on package, the package executes without any errors.

DelayValidation = True for the Execute Package Task tasks is set and DelayValidation for the connection manager is set to True.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to what might be causing this error?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

DTSInstall.exe Not Created When Project Is Built

Jan 18, 2007

Hi,
A bit of a long-shot posting this here, as this area doesn't seem to see too much action, but Google is failing me!
I've run through all the necessary steps to create a deployment utility (as per http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/mgngssis.mspx), but am not getting the DTSInstall exe when I build the project. No errors or warnings are generated, and all the other files (including the SSISDeploymentManifest) are created as expected. Anyone have any good ideas?

SSIS Package Install / DTSInstall.exe

May 22, 2007

I have used above the DTSInstall.exe to Install my DTS Package in SQL Server 2005.
An entry is created in the sysdtspackages90 table.
2 Questions:
1)Where in SQL Server 2005 should I be able to see the Package itself? If I look in Maintenace Plans I see nothing.
2) If I want to run it manually, when I double click on the dtsx file on the Database Server I get a message asking me what program I want to open it with? Why is this? Do I need to have SQL Management Studio Installed?

Any help apprecisated.

Standard Edition Fails To Install, Express Edition Fails To Uninstall

May 8, 2008

We are trying to install the Standard Edition of SQL Server 2005. We already have SQL Express installed. Standard won't install and Express won't uninstall.

We have tried every suggestion we can find and some we made up. When we try to install Standard, we get to the bit where you choose what you want to install and the only thing available is workstation components.

There are so many cases of this on the Internat that I can't believe MS have not solved the issue. And I am stunned that they want to charge us more money to talk to us about how to fix something we just paid them an arm and a leg for!

What do I need to tell you to get some idea of where to go next with this?

Xml Validation

Aug 10, 2006

Hi

I am running the following:

DECLARE @h uniqueidentifier --conversation handle

DECLARE @msg xml; --will hold the message

BEGIN DIALOG CONVERSATION @h

FROM SERVICE [ewx.co.za/Service/store001_ewx_sb_service]

TO SERVICE 'ewx.co.za/Service/ewx_sb_hub_service'

ON CONTRACT [ewx.co.za/Contract/ewx_Contract];

SET @msg = '<InventoryUpdate>

<TitleId>STORE001TEST1</TitleId>

<Quantity>7777</Quantity>

</InventoryUpdate>';

SEND ON CONVERSATION @h

MESSAGE TYPE [ewx.co.za/Message/ewx_sendmsg](@msg);

Now to test errors comming back on the aueue i sed to make the xml tags wrong, then the target would send a error back on the queue with xml validation failed (both queues have validation well_formed_xml). However now in testing i cannot even send the message i get an invalid xml error straight away, i am not sure why this is , i know the xml is not valid but the send used to work and i would get an erro rback, as the xml is validated by the ttarget, but this no longer works it ails strainght away, with no thing in any queue. What could be causing this ?

Thanx

I think I have read online a recommendation about not using XML VALIDATION in a production environment, due to performance reasons. Is it recommended using other that NONE validation in production, and is there available documentation for a scale that grades performance hits for various types of validations?

But when I try to add the XML file to a database-field of type xml(CONTENT dbo.Common7), I get following error:

String Validation

May 23, 2008

Is there a way in TSQL to validate a string to ensure it has only numbers or letters (no special characters like @,%, etc)?

I want to write a function that validates a number that should only contain letters and numbers. The function should return 1 if valid 0 if not. If it contains anything other than 0-9 or A-Z or a-z then it should return 0.

Any ideas on how to do this in TSQL? I could do this in C# easily with regular expressions, but I don't want to use SQLCLR or any other external resource like that...just straight TSQL.

Thanks!

Validation Errors

Feb 16, 2008

I am having trouble with the SSIS wizard results. The connections to source and destination test good, but when I execute a task to copy all tables from a hosted OLEDB to a local SQL native connection, I get this error:

Error 0xc0202049: Data Flow Task: Failure inserting into the read-only column "eventID".
(SQL Server Import and Export Wizard)

Error 0xc0202045: Data Flow Task: Column metadata validation failed.
(SQL Server Import and Export Wizard)

(SQL Server Import and Export Wizard)

Error 0xc0024107: Data Flow Task: There were errors during task validation.

The actual table that it is trying to write to is empty. What might I need to do, in order to correct the situation?

Any suggestions?

Validation Error

Error 2 Validation error. DFT Load Vacancy: MI Stage Vacancy Source [1]: The output column "Business" (6336) on the non-error output has no corresponding output column on the error output. Vacancy.dtsx 0 0

The thing is, I've looked and it DOES have a corresponding output column on the error output. Is there something I'm missing here?

Execute Without Validation?

We run the same package day in and day out. So we want to turn off validation, which consumes around 30% of the package run time. Since the data source and destinations are known to be correct, we dont need validation and want to save this unnecessary step every time.

How can we Execute without Validation?
