DT_GUID To DT_WSTR Yields Braces Around Uniqueidentifier

Sep 8, 2006

I'm using a Lookup component to add a DT_GUID column named cat_id to a data flow, which is used in a downstream Derived Column component to add a DT_WSTR column named value. The DC expression simply casts the uniqueidentifier to the desired type: (DT_WSTR, 434)cat_id

But when the values are persisted in the destination table's nvarchar(434) column, they have braces around them, e.g. {F475DB7F-5CB0-4EE1-9BF2-758C77D7A6D7}

What is introducing those braces, and what do I need to do to prevent it?

GUID And Curly Braces

Use Of Curly Braces In SET Query

The Query as follows:

DECLARE @end DATETIME

SET @end = {3}

I tried to read a lot of stuff regarding curly braces in SQL. Couldnt find a full proof answer. Couple of question which comes to my mind are :

1) What is the use of curly brackets in the above query statement?
2) The variable is of the data type DATATIME. Why is an integer variable stored instead ?

What Is The Meaning Of Using Curly Braces In A SQL Query

When you write a sql query, some times there is curly braces within a query in a asp.net application.  What is the meaning of that?
select column1, column2, column3

{LIMITDATE}
order by column3

So what is being used in here {LIMITDATE} and can some one explain this to me?  I use C#.

DT_14 And DT_wstr

Feb 28, 2008

Hi,
In excel file, I have one column CertNum. The Sqlserver destination column is CertNum of type int. I am using one data conversion to convert excel CertNum to integer datatype. I am getting the error like Potentila loss of data, truncation occurs. So Before doing the Data Conversion I included one Derived column with the expression
ISNULL([CertNum) || [CertNum] == "" ? 0 : [CertNum]. Then here I am getting error: The DT_14 and DT_WSTR are incomaptable datatypes.
How to avoid this error?

Thanks in advance

Data Access :: BULK INSERT Yields Inconsistent Results

May 6, 2015

I am getting inconsistent results when BULK INSERTING data from a tab-delimited text file. As part of my testing, I run the same code on the same file again and again, and I get different results every time! I get this on SQL 2005 and SQL 2012 R2.We have an application that imports data from a spreadsheet. The sheet contains section headers with account numbers and detail rows with transactions by date:

AAAA.1234 /* (account number)*/
1/1/2015      $150                 First Transaction
1/3/2015      $24.233              Second Transaction

BBBB.5678
1/1/2015      $350                 Third Transaction
1/3/2015      $24.233              Fourth Transaction

My Import program saves this spreadsheet at tab-delimited text, then I use BULK INSERT to bring the data into a generic table full of varchar(255) fields. There are about 90,000 rows in each day's data; after the BULK INSERT about half of them are removed for various reasons. Next I add a RowID column to the table with the IDENTITY (1,1) property. This gives my raw data unique row numbers.

I then run a routine that converts and copies those records into another holding table that's a copy of the final destination table. That routine parses though the data, assigning the account number in the section header to each detail row. It ends up looking like this:

AAAA.1234     1/1/2015      $150          First Purchase
AAAA.1234     1/3/2015      $24.233     Second Purchase
BBBB.5678     1/1/2015      $350            Third Purchase
BBBB.5678     1/3/2015      $24.233       Fourth Purchase

My technique: I use a cursor to get the starting RowID for each Account Number: I then use the upper and lower RowIDs to do an INSERT into the final table. The query looks like this:

SELECT RowID, SUBSTRING(RowHeader, 6,4) + '.UBC1' AS AccountNumber
FROM   GenericTable
WHERE RowHeader LIKE '____.____%'

Results look like this:

But every time I run the routine, I get different numbers! my results are not accurate. I get inconsistent results EVERY TIME.Here is my code, with table, field and account names changed for business confidentiality.This is a high profile project at my company;

TRUNCATE TABLE GenericImportTable;
ALTER TABLE GenericImportTable DROP COLUMN RowID;
BULK INSERT GenericImportTable FROM 'SERVERGeneralAppnameDataFile.2015.05.04.tab.txt'
WITH (FIELDTERMINATOR = ' ', ROWTERMINATOR = '
', FIRSTROW = 6)

[code]...

Lookup With Default Full Cache Option Yields No Results

Nov 20, 2007

I'm either missing something or this is a bug. I have a Lookup that finds no matches if I use the default option of full caching (everything on the Advanced tab unchecked). The lookup table is relatively small (15348 bytes) in only 544 rows. If I check only the Enable Memory Restriction box and eliminate caching, it works fine. I can also check the Enable Caching box and accept the default cache size of 5MB and it works fine. Anyone have any ideas? I'm running on Standard Edition, SP2.

Thanks!

Casting DT_WSTR To Integers In SSIS

Jul 5, 2007

Hello, all.

Why is it that, despite what is said in the sketchy SQL Help content, it appears to be impossible to cast a string to an integer in the Expression Builder to generate a value for a variable? More specifically, why does the following expression cause an error?

(DT_UI4) (SUBSTRING(@[User::FullDataPath], LEN(@[User:ataPath]) + 1, 2))

I'm iterating over files and using the name of a given file as an ID for an operation. I simply want to grab a file name using the Foreach Loop Container and process that file, while at the same time use the name in another operation. The file name will be something like "2.txt" (full path something like "c:somethingsomething2.txt"). I can use string functions to return the file name, which is a number as a string, and it should be no problem to cast that number as a string to a number (an Int32). SQL Server 2005 help has a chart that indicates such a cast is legal.

Maybe it's a crazy thing to be doing. Maybe I have to go about this a completely different way, but casting from "2" to 2 should be possible in the Expression Builder.

Thanks for any help.

How To Convert DT_WSTR To DT_DBDate In Expression

May 2, 2007

Hi all,

Actually trying to add one month to current variables value so I can process per month data in for loop for that I have written the following statement in Assign Expression Part of For Loop
dateadd("Month",1,((DT_DBDATE)(@[User::_year]+"/"+@[User::_month]+"/"+"01"))) here I am getting the error message that error converting from data type dt_wstr to to datatype dt_dbdate

@[User::_year] contains year value like 2003 and @[User::_month] contains month value like 1 using these variables I want to add the month to the date created by using these both variables.

so this is the first part to add the month to date and other part is to assign new value to variables by using datepart function

any help and guidance related to this whether I am doing right or not if any other wayout to acheive this goal.

How To Convert DT_NTEXT To DT_WSTR In Script Component

Oct 24, 2006

The IC column referenced in the script below is DT_NTEXT, so when I run it the output value column gets "Microsoft.SqlServer.DTS.Pipeline.BlobColumn" instead of the individual codes (separated by "*"). Also, there is only 1 output row per input row, instead of 1 output row per code.

I found some references to the GetBobData() method, but replacing Row.IC.ToString() with Row.IC.GetBlobData(0, CInt(Row.IC.Length)).ToString() puts "System.Byte[]" in the value output column. There is still only output row per input row.

So how do I convert the IC column to a String that can be Split()?Public Overrides Sub Input0_ProcessInputRow(ByVal Row As Input0Buffer)
Dim seq As Integer = 0
For Each code As String In Row.IC.ToString().Split("*"c)
'Add a row to the output buffer:
Output0Buffer.AddRow()

'Preserve columns from the input buffer:
Output0Buffer.itemid = Row.itemid
Output0Buffer.attributeid = Row.attributeid
'Output0Buffer.IC = Row.IC

'Add output columns:
Output0Buffer.seq = seq
Output0Buffer.value = code
seq += 1
Next

Selecting Numeric Or Time-scale Values On Chart Yields Duplicate Months

I have a line chart which works great except when the x axis displays duplicate months. I have tried format codes of MM-YYYY and MMM and have the "numeric or time-scale values" checkbox checked. The data displays fine but the X axis in the case of the MMM format code displays as:

Sep Oct Oct Nov Nov

leaving the user to wonder where exactly does October and November start...

I've googled around but don't see off-hand what I am doing wrong. I am display 3 simultaneous lines if that matters...

AS 400 Data Being Interpreted As Unicode Strings (DT_WSTR) Datatype

Jun 23, 2006

I am building a data warehouse. Some of the data comes from an AS 400 EPR system. I used the OLEDB connector when first pulling the data into SQL Server doing simple import data from table option. That worked great for getting the initial data load into SQL Server and creating the base SQL Server tables although it was excruciatingly slow (that was probably due to the transport from the AS 400).

Now, I need to get new records that are added to the AS400 side of things on a daily basis. For that, I was trying to use the OLEDB AS400 connector. However, I found that the OLEDB connector wouldn't work when I was trying to specify an SQL Statement for what to get; i.e., a simple query like Select * from TWLDAT.STKT where BYSDAT >= '2005-01-27' would simply not work. Found articles here explaining that it is probably a problem on the AS400 side of things and where people recommended using an ADO ODBC data reader source for this type of thing. So, I'm trying to implement that. However, I have a huge problem with it.

The original tables that got created were mapped to use NVARCHAR fields for character data. When the ADO ODBC data reader source accesses the AS400 data, it insists on interpreting the string type fields as being unicode strings and giving it a data type of DT_WSTR when what I need it to have is a plain old DT_STR data type. When the strings are interpreted as unicode strings, they cannot be converted in a way that allows the NVARCHAR fields to be filled with the data. The exact error message I get for all the fields that should wind up being nvarchar fields is as follows:

Column "BYStOK" cannot convert between unicode and non-unicode string data types.

Okay, so I try to change the data types in the ADO ODBC data reader to be plain DT_STR data types and I cannot do so.

Does anyone have any idea why the ADO ODBC data reader source insists on interpreting the string data coming from the AS 400 as unicode string data or why it refuses to allow that to be changed to DT_STR data type?

Thanks in advance for any info. By the way, if there is a better way than the ADO ODBC data source to get at this data when I need to specify an SQL command, I would love to hear about it. Not wild about using ODBC in the OLEDB age.

How Do I Get The Uniqueidentifier Of Just Inserted Row?

Apr 18, 2004

Hello there!

it was a while since i studied SQL and that brings us to my problem...

I'm creating a Stored Procedure wich first insert information in a table. That table has a uniqueidentifier fild that is default-set to newid().

later in the SP i need that uniqueidentifier value? how do I get it?

I tried this:

CREATE PROCEDURE spInsertNews
@uidArticleId uniqueidentifier = newid,
@strHeader nvarchar(300),
@strAbstract nvarchar(600),
@strText nvarchar(4000),
@dtDate datetime,
@dtDateStart datetime,
@dtDateStop datetime,
@strAuthor nvarchar(200),
@strAuthorEmail nvarchar(200),
@strKeywords nvarchar(400),
@strCategoryName nvarchar(200) = 'nyhet'
AS
INSERT INTO tblArticles
VALUES( @uidArticleId,@strHeader,@strAbstract,@strText,@dt
Date,@dtDateStart,@dtDateStop,@strAuthor,@strAutho
rEmail,@strKeywords)

declare @uidCategoryId uniqueidentifier
EXEC spGetCategoryId @strCategoryName, @uidCategoryId OUTPUT

INSERT INTO tblArticleCategory(uidArticleId, uidCategoryId)
VALUES(@uidArticleId, @uidCategoryId)

But i get an error when I EXEC the SP like this:

EXEC spInsertNews
@strHeader = 'Detta är den andra nyheten',
@strAbstract = 'dn första insatt med sp:n',
@strText = 'här kommer hela nyhetstexten att stå. Här får det plats 2000 tecken, dvs fler än vad jag orkar skriva nu...',
@dtDate = '2003-01-01',
@dtDateStart = '2003-01-01',
@dtDateStop = '2004-01-01',
@strAuthor = 'David N',
@strAuthorEmail = 'david@davi.com',
@strKeywords = 'nyhet, blajblaj, blaj'

the errormessage is: Syntax error converting from a character string to uniqueidentifier.

does anyone have a sulution to this problem?
Can I use something similar to the @@IDENTITY?
I will be greatful for any ideas...

thanks

Foreign Key Is An Uniqueidentifier

Nov 10, 2005

Hello everyone.
I have 2 tables in MSSQL Server 2000, Products(idProduct, idProductType, name, quatity) and ProductsType(idProductType, name).

idXXXX are the primery keys and the data type is uniqueidentifier.

In table Products, the collum idProductType is a foreign key refering table ProductsType.

I can insert as many product types as i want without any problems.
Insert INTO ProductsType(name) VALUES('milk')

When inserting products i use the idProductType that was automatacly generated in last insert.
INSERT INTO Products (uuidProductType,name,quantity,)
VALUES ('AD9388A3-CA86-482D-B57F-6FA068E7D405','President Milk 50cl',500)

but i got the following error in SQL Query Analyzer:
Server: Msg 8169, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Syntax error converting from a character string to uniqueidentifier.

I have searched the forum and i cant find any solution. i need to use uniqueidentifer data types because replication with PDA devices.

Any tips?

Thank you in advance.
Helder

Problem With Sp And Uniqueidentifier

Jul 12, 2006

Hi,

I use this procedure to add a record to the db (SQL 2005)
i constantly get this error:

Conversion failed when converting from a character string to uniqueidentifier.

This is the sp:

set ANSI_NULLS ON
set QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
go

ALTER PROC [dbo].[AddBootloader]

@BootName nvarchar(50),
@Version nvarchar(50),
@CSD nvarchar(50),
@CreatorID uniqueidentifier,
@FilePath nvarchar(150),
@FileSize nvarchar(150)

AS
INSERT INTO dbo.EB_Bootloaders

([Bootname]
,[Version]
,[CSD]
,[FilePath]
,[FileSize]
,[CreatorID])

VALUES

(
@BootName,
@Version,
@CSD,
@CreatorID,
@FilePath,
@FileSize)

And this is the table:

USE [Ebdata]
GO
/****** Object: Table [dbo].[EB_Bootloaders] Script Date: 07/12/2006 10:06:42 ******/
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[EB_Bootloaders](
[ID] [bigint] IDENTITY(1,3) NOT NULL,
[BootName] [nvarchar](50) COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AS NULL,
[Version] [nvarchar](50) COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AS NULL,
[CSD] [nvarchar](50) COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AS NULL,
[FilePath] [nvarchar](150) COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AS NULL,
[FileSize] [nvarchar](50) COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AS NULL,
[CreateDate] [datetime] NULL CONSTRAINT [DF_EB_Bootloaders_CreateDate] DEFAULT (getdate()),
[CreatorID] [uniqueidentifier] NOT NULL,
[UpdateDate] [datetime] NULL,
[UpdateUser] [uniqueidentifier] NULL,
CONSTRAINT [PK_EB_Bootloaders_1] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED
(
[ID] ASC
)WITH (IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF) ON [PRIMARY]
) ON [PRIMARY]

GO
USE [Ebdata]
GO
ALTER TABLE [dbo].[EB_Bootloaders] WITH NOCHECK ADD CONSTRAINT [FK_EB_Bootloaders_aspnet_Users] FOREIGN KEY([CreatorID])
REFERENCES [dbo].[aspnet_Users] ([UserId])
NOT FOR REPLICATION
GO
ALTER TABLE [dbo].[EB_Bootloaders] WITH NOCHECK ADD CONSTRAINT [FK_EB_Bootloaders_aspnet_Users1] FOREIGN KEY([UpdateUser])
REFERENCES [dbo].[aspnet_Users] ([UserId])
NOT FOR REPLICATION

The funny thing is that i copied the sp code from another which runs perfect,
I insert a Guid from an asp.net page.

Hope someone can help me here because im am stucked!

Cheers Wimmo

How Do I Get The Uniqueidentifier Of Just Inserted Row?

Apr 18, 2004

Hello there!

it was a while since i studied SQL and that brings us to my problem...

I'm creating a Stored Procedure wich first insert information in a table. That table has a uniqueidentifier fild that is default-set to newid().

later in the SP i need that uniqueidentifier value? how do I get it?

I tried this:

CREATE PROCEDURE spInsertNews
@uidArticleId uniqueidentifier = newid,
@strHeader nvarchar(300),
@strAbstract nvarchar(600),
@strText nvarchar(4000),
@dtDate datetime,
@dtDateStart datetime,
@dtDateStop datetime,
@strAuthor nvarchar(200),
@strAuthorEmail nvarchar(200),
@strKeywords nvarchar(400),
@strCategoryName nvarchar(200) = 'nyhet'
AS
INSERT INTO tblArticles
VALUES( @uidArticleId,@strHeader,@strAbstract,@strText,@dt Date,@dtDateStart,@dtDateStop,@strAuthor,@strAutho rEmail,@strKeywords)

declare @uidCategoryId uniqueidentifier
EXEC spGetCategoryId @strCategoryName, @uidCategoryId OUTPUT

INSERT INTO tblArticleCategory(uidArticleId, uidCategoryId)
VALUES(@uidArticleId, @uidCategoryId)

But i get an error when I EXEC the SP like this:

EXEC spInsertNews
@strHeader = 'Detta är den andra nyheten',
@strAbstract = 'dn första insatt med sp:n',
@strText = 'här kommer hela nyhetstexten att stå. Här får det plats 2000 tecken, dvs fler än vad jag orkar skriva nu...',
@dtDate = '2003-01-01',
@dtDateStart = '2003-01-01',
@dtDateStop = '2004-01-01',
@strAuthor = 'David N',
@strAuthorEmail = 'david@davi.com',
@strKeywords = 'nyhet, blajblaj, blaj'

the errormessage is: Syntax error converting from a character string to uniqueidentifier.

does anyone have a sulution to this problem?
Can I use something similar to the @@IDENTITY?
I will be greatful for any ideas...

thanks
/David, Sweden
