Data Access :: JDBC Stored Procedure Optional Inputs
Oct 4, 2015
When using JDBC is it possible to ignore input parameters in a stored procedure if they have default values?
I can create a string and execute a PreparedStatement but I'd like to use a Callable Statement.

Hello.
I'm trying to write a generic Stored Procedure will select records with the following options.
1. Select XXX from theTable
Where ID = 1
2. Select XXX from theTable
Where ID = 1 or ID = 3 or ID = 4
The issues is that at run time the WHERE CLAUSE COULD CHANGE
(it could have multiple OR-d options)
Is there a way to pass a varChar argument like "Where ID=1 or ID =2"?
Thanks in advance!

I'm trying to re-write my database to de-couple the interface (MS Access) from the SQL Backend. Â As a result, I'm going to write a number of Stored Procedures to replace the MS Access code. Â My first attempt worked on a small sample, however, trying to move this on to a real table hasn't worked (I've amended the SP and code to try and get it to work on 2 fields, rather than the full 20 plus).It works in SQL Management console (supply a Client ID, it returns all the client details), but does not return anything (recordset closed) when trying to access via VBA code.The Stored procedure is:-
USE [VMSProd]
GO
/****** Object: StoredProcedure [Clients].[vms_Get_Specified_Client] Script Date: 22/09/2015 16:29:59 ******/
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
[code]....

How do you use data from a select statement as inputs for a store procedure?
e.g.
Code Block
Select FirstName, LastName from Student where Grade = 'A'
And I want to use all the FirstName and LastName as inputs for this store procedure
Code Block
Exec StudentOfTheMonth @FirstName = FirstName, @LastName = LastName

Hi I have a textbox, and a dropdown list, What i am trying to do is give the user the option of searching based on both (textbox and dropdownlist) or one or the other(textbox or dropdownlist), What i am experiencing though is that when i enter a word into the textbox and select a value from a dropdownlist i get no search results even though the word is "like" the text in the database, it will only work when i type out the full word. What is wrong with my stored procedure, here it is;
SELECT S.storeID, S.storeName
FROM dbo.Stores AS SINNER JOIN dbo.storeCategories AS SC
ON S.storeID = SC.storeID left JOIN dbo.SubCategories AS SU
ON SC.subCategoryID = SU.subCategoryID
WHERE S.storeName like ISNULL(@storeName + '%', S.storeName)
AND SU.subCategoryID = ISNULL( @subCategoryID, SU.subCategoryID)

How do I specify optional parameters when writing CLR based Stored Procedures in C#?

Hi all,
Can anyone please tell me what is the best way to handle optional parameters in a stored procedure which will ensure a good execution plan? I ask this as I have to create a stored procedure with six optional parameters and I'm getting a little concerned that, apart from the parameter issue, I'm going to have a lot of if else statements. Is there an easy way of doing all this?
Thanks

Everyone,I have an application that pulls a list of employees into a web form. I use the same stored procedure to search for employees by various demographic characteristics, and have set all of these search parameters to be optional in the stored procedure.Everything works fine when I pull the entire list (without declaring any select parameters). However, on my Search page, I have declared a number of SelectParameter (ControlParameters, to be specific) objects and mapped each one to its respective control (text boxes and a checkbox). When I attempt a search, the SqlDataSource does not select any records unless I specify an argument for ALL of the search parameters. If I omit even a single search value, the page just posts back and does not pull any information from the database. I have verified with SQL Profiler that it is not attempting to hit the database.I have experimented with various declarations in the ControlParameter object, including the DefaultValue and ConvertEmptyStringToNull items. If I specify a non-empty string as a DefaultValue for all of the parameters, it will perform the query, but it does not query if I use an empty string as a default value - unless my user specifies a value in the form. Any ideas?ThanksTim

Hi I want to give the user the ability to search based on a number of criteria, however i do not know how to build my statement properly this is what i have so far;
ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[stream_StoreFind]
-- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here
@StoreName varchar(250),@subCategoryID INT
AS
SELECT Stores.StoreName ,StoreCategories.storeIDFROM Stores INNER JOIN
StoreCategoriesON
Stores.storeID = StoreCategories.storeID INNER JOIN
SubCategories ON
StoreCategories.subCategoryID = SubCategories.subCategoryID WHERE
My problem is how will i pass the parameters into the statement, taking into fact that sometimes they may be optional. Thank you

If I do this with a function and multiple inline sql statements, I could probably do it much easier, but here at work, sprocs are required, and I can't seem to stretch my knowledge and Google searches far enough to find the answer. Plus, I don't really think that creating 4 separate sProcs is the most efficient way of doing this
I need to select and return 8 columns from a table, but the problem is I need to feed the sProc parameters in such a way, that I can use different criteria in the Where Clause.
for instance, I need to combine these 4 select statements into one:1. Select (fields) from (table) Where TechID=@TechID and Status=@Status)2. Select (fields) from (table) Where TechID=@TechID3. Select (fields) from (table) Where OrdNum=@OrdNum3. Select (fields) from (table) Where CustNum=@CustNum
In all instances, the fields and the table are the same - how can I combine all these possible Where clauses (if/then - Select Case?) so that it's only one Stored Procedure?
(or, is this even possible?)

I have the following stored procedure:
Code Block
CREATE PROCEDURE udsp_td_queryowner
@state varchar(10) = NULL,
@businesstype varchar(20) = NULL,
@size int = NULL,
@sortorder varchar(20) = 'state'
AS
SELECT gl_t.state AS [State],
gl_t.business_type AS [Business Type],
gl_t.lowsize AS [Low Size],
gl_t.highsize AS [High Size],
e.InternetAddress AS [Owner]
FROM gl_territory gl_t JOIN employee e ON gl_t.employeenumber = e.EmployeeNumber
WHERE state = COALESCE(@state, state) AND
business_type = COALESCE(@businesstype, business_type) AND
COALESCE(@size, lowsize, highsize) between lowsize AND highsize
ORDER BY CASE WHEN @sortorder = 'state' THEN gl_t.state
WHEN @sortorder = 'business type' THEN gl_t.business_type
WHEN @sortorder = 'owner' THEN RTRIM(e.FirstName) + ' ' + RTRIM(e.LastName)
END ASC,
CASE WHEN @sortorder = 'low size' THEN gl_t.lowsize
WHEN @sortorder = 'high size' THEN gl_t.highsize
END ASC,
CASE WHEN @sortorder = 'statedesc' THEN gl_t.state
WHEN @sortorder = 'business typedesc' THEN gl_t.business_type
WHEN @sortorder = 'ownerdesc' THEN RTRIM(e.FirstName) + ' ' + RTRIM(e.LastName)
END DESC,
CASE WHEN @sortorder = 'low sizedesc' THEN gl_t.lowsize
WHEN @sortorder = 'high sizedesc' THEN gl_t.highsize
END DESC
What it allows me to do is enter in any number of the variables when running the stored procedure. For example, EXECUTE udsp_td_queryowner @state = 'IA' would give me everything in the table in the state of IA regardless of the other field values. Likewise, if I ran EXECUTE udsp_td_queryowner @state = 'KY', @size = 15 it would return the records that are in KY and the size of 15 is in the range of the low and high value.
If I run the first example in Query Analyzer I get 53 records from the data I have. It returns every record that has IA as the state. I run the same thing in Reporting Services and all I get is 3 records. Just the 3 records for the state of IA where the business type is either null or blank (I can't tell.) If I allow all of the variables to accept Nulls then it returns the correct data. However, I would like to find a better alternative because when the report is run it returns all of the records in the table initially and if they user wants to enter in any parameters they have to toggle off the null box for the corresponding paramter.
Any ideas?

Hi,
I do not know if this is the right place, but do guide me if possible.
I am using JDBC driver to send data from SAP XI to MS SQL 2000.

I know there is a way to pass paramters by name and hence sequence of parameters should not matter. So I was shocked and I still do not believe that when you call a stored procedure through JDBC adapter, the SEQUENCE of parameters have to be the same as defined in the stored procedure. I do not know if this is true for Oracle as well as MS SQL Server 2000, but I faced this problem on MS SQL 2k.
example - if stored proc 1 has params a, b, c and stored proc 2 has param d, c, a . My destination data type looks like a, b, c, d. Now if i decide to call proc 2, the JDBC adapter in SAP generates XML like a,c,d. I did a trace on SQL server and found that the JDBC driver uses sp_execute command, which my DBA told uses positional mapping and not named mapping.
I believe that SAP or the MS JDBC driver should support this.
So does anyone know, if there is an additional parameter which will make the JDBC driver to work with name and not position of paramters.

I have two database SOP and CRM. Both supports windows authentication and SOP suports sql authentication too. Now i have to write a SP in SOP database with identity impersonation (with superadmin authentication) which will do some work with this impersonated id on SOP database but needs to fetch some values from CRM with the current user account - not impersonated account.Lets clear... I want to show the orders generated by all users and in the display grid there is a column like "IsMyCustomer?" which will show the order is to a customer which i have access. In CRM (MS) if i select from FilteredCustomer view i will get the customersid of those under me. And if i left outer join with FilteredOrder view in SOP (with Super Admin windows credentials) which returns orders by current user i will get the desired result.Now the problem is i can't sent two connection credentials to a SP. So what i want is to connect SOP with user's windows credentials (not with impersonation) and from the SP we will Select data with Admin's account. But i don't know is there any way to connect to a linked server with a different credentials. Like when i am selecting from CRM server it will use different credentials.Remember i am using SQL server 2000 and everything should be done through a single SP.I know i can do this easily with two different select from Data access layer. But i am looking for some performance effectinve way. My PM wants this idea to be implemented. I have no chice guys....

When running a stored procedure, how can i retrieve the warnings that are issued within the stored procedure?
the code used is below,
the jdbc is connecting fine, it is running the stored procedure, but when an error is raised in the stored procedure, it is not coming back into s.getwarnings()
warning raised in stored proc with
Code Block
RAISERROR ('Error', 16, 1)with nowait;
there are no results for the stored procedure, I am just wanting to get the warnings
Code Block
Class.forName("com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver");
Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:sqlserver://localh...........);
CallableStatement s = con.prepareCall("{call procedure_name}");
s.execute();
//running in seprate thread
SQLWarning warn = s.getWarnings();
while (m.running) {
if(warn == null) {
warn = s.getWarnings();
}
safeOut(warn);
if(warn != null)
warn = warn.getNextWarning();
m.wait(100);
}the code is not complete, but should show what is happening
it is continually outputting null for the warning, though the strored proc is definately raising errors, which is proven by running it in a query window in sql server.
it is retreiving warning if the statement is a raiseerror instead of a call to the proc
Code Block
CallableStatement s = con.prepareCall("RAISERROR ('Error', 1, 1)with nowait;");
this thread is quite related, but doesnt offer a working solution

Hi.
How can I get the messages sent by the server while I'm executing a stored procedure via the JDBC driver?
I need to get my own debug messages (done through the print() function)
and also standard server messages (such as "x row(s) affected" or
results from SET STATISTICS TIME ON). Is this possible?
Many thanks.

My server is MS Sql Server 2005. I'm using com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver as the driver class. I've established a connection to the database.
I'm trying to invoke a stored procedure using JDBC and a callable statement. The stored procedure has a parameter @CurOut CURSOR VARYING OUTPUT. How do I setup the callable statement so the output parameter is accepted by the driver?
I'm not really trying to pass a cursor up to the database Server but I'm wanting a cursor back from the stored procedure that is other than the result set or other value the stored procedure returns.
First problem: What java.sql.Types (or SQL Server specific) value do I specify for the out parameter I'm registering on the CallableStatement?
Second problem: What do I set the value of the parameter to?
The code looks like:
CallableStatement cstmt = myConnection.prepareCall(sQuery);
cstmt.registerOutParameter(1, Types.OTHER); // What is the right type?
cstmt.setNull(1, Types.OTHER); // What is the right type?
if (cstmt.execute()) {
ResultSet rs = cstmt.getResultSet();
}
Execution results in a NullPointerException from the driver.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for your assistance.

Hi every experts
I have a exist Stored Procedure in SQL 2005 Server, the stored procedure contain few output parameter, I have no problem to get result from output parameter to display using label control by using SqlCommand in Visual Studio 2003. Now new in Visual Studio 2005, I can't use sqlcommand wizard anymore, therefore I try to use the new sqldatasource control. When I Configure Datasource in Sqldatasource wizard, I assign select field using exist stored procedure, the wizard control return all parameter in the list with auto assign the direction type(input/ouput....), after that, whatever I try, I click on Test Query Button at last part, I always get error message The Query did not return any data table.
My Question is How can I setup sqldatasource to access Stored Procedure which contain output parameter, and after that How can I assign the output parameter value to bind to the label control's Text field to show on web?
Thanks anyone, who can give me any advice.

I am running into an issue while executing a sproc from Excel VBA. Everything connects fine, and I am passing a parameter, however, after a few seconds, it seems like the connection receives a "completed" command and continues down it's code, but the sproc is still executing. The result is that I never receive the record set from the sproc.Here is the code snippet from VBA:
' Create Recordset objects.
Dim cmd As New ADODB.Command
Dim conn As ADODB.Connection
Dim prm As ADODB.Parameter
Dim sConnString As String
Dim rs As ADODB.Recordset
Dim strQry As String
Dim rowCount As Long
[code]....
And here is the sproc that is being called. the first thing it performs after the "IF" block (there are multiple steps that would consecutively be called after this, but all of the data hinges on this first step working) is a TRUNCATE statement. After running a SQL profiler while executing the VBA code, I consistently see an "account log out" entry; almost as if the connection from the Excel workbook is sent a disconnect instruction. The sproc continues to run and perform the rest of the script in the "IF" block, but the returned recordset is never returned back to Excel.
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
SET NOCOUNT ON

I have a procedure that uses varchar(max) as output parameter, when I tried to retrieve
the result of calling the procedure, the result is truncated to 4000 character. Is this a driver bug?
Any workaround?
Here is the pseudo code:
create Procedure foo(@output varchar(max))
{
set @foo = 'string that has more than 4000 characters...';
return;
}
Java code:
CallableStatement cs = connection.prepareCall("{call foo ?}");
cs.registerOutputParameter(1, Types.longvarchar); // also tried Types.CLOB.
cs.execute();
String result = cs.getString(1); // The result is truncated to 4000 char.
-- Also tried
CLOB clob = cs.getClob(1);
long len = clob.length(); // The result is 4000.

For some reason, I run a stored procedure in Query Analyzer and it works fine. When I run the very same procedure in MS access by clicking on its link I have to run it twice. The first run gives me the message that the stored procedure ran correctly but returned no records. The second run gives me the correct number of records but I have to run it twice. I am running month-to-month data. The first run is Jan thru March. Jan and Feb have no records so I run three months on the first set. The ensuing runs are individual months from April onward. The output is correct but any ideas on why I have to do it twice in Access? I am a bit new to stored procedures but my supervisor assures me that it should be exactly the same.

Hi,
I've created my own custom data flow transformation task (using C#) that
will parse a fullname and output the various name parts. In the
ProvideComponentProperties method, I create 5 output columns (prefix, first, middle,
last, and suffix). In the ProcessInput method, I parse the input and add the
name parts to the buffer. The bad thing is that I€™m making an assumption on
the position of the Full Name input column within the buffer.
I would like the €œuser€? to be able to map their "full name" input column to a known Full Name column so I don€™t have to make any assumptions. This is the first
SSIS task I€™ve tried to create and I haven€™t been able to find very many
examples online.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Marshall

I have a web page I want to run a stored procedure from. In the web page I have three drop downs Business Area, Business Unit and Reporting PeriodThe drop downs determine whether all projects are returned or all projects for a certain business unit / business area or month.This means I have to tailor my sql statement accordingly. What I want to know is can I append sections of a sql statement ie add or subtract more where clauses depending on the values pulled in from the web page.At the moment I have only accounted for 2 variables and that has caused me to create 4 IF statements depending on the values. 3 variables would cause even more IF statements and multiple combinations which I am trying to avoid.

Hello guys,
I want to implement a searching with a stored procedure. As an example I have a table like
> tableA ; Id,Name,Surname,Gender(bit) 0 -Male , 1 - Female
If i want to choose all records that are male, I could simply have a query like this :
SELECT * FROM tableA WHERE Gender = 0
and vice versa for female.
If i want to choose all rows in the table i should omit where clause.
The problem is , when i use a stored procedure i should send a parameter. And i dont know if there is a possible way to to do this. When i try such procedure :
CREATE astoredprc
(@gender bit)
AS
SELECT * FROM tableA WHERE Gender = @Gender
GO
--
In such prc. i can only get rows with a where clause. What if i want to use the same procedure with all rows and omiting where. I have many fields like this and I m unsure if I should use a text query or not ...
Thanks for all of u from now on
