Query To Return Date Differences

May 23, 2008

Hi Guys,

I hope someone can help, I usually just need to do simple queries, and am fine with that, but this is a bit over my head without a few pointers in the right direction.

I have a table that stores log results from pieces of hardware that contact an internet server periodically.

For simplification, this contains:

LogID
SystemID
DeviceID
ContactDateTime
Notes

Each device contacts the server about once every 5 minutes, and there are about 100 devices in 6 systems.

What I need to do is find out, for a certain date time range, things like:

1. the average time between comunication for any one device
2. the longest time between communication for any one device
3. average time between communications for all devices in a system.

We currently do this by downloading all the logs and working through them programmatically on the server, but as you can imagine, it is a very large amount of information, and it would be much more efficient if this could be done on the SQL server.

Any thoughts on how to achieve this please.

Many thanks

How To Find Differences In Column Data Types Between Tables In Two Different Databases Using TSQL

Apr 21, 2008

I have Two Database that exist on Two seperate servers. The two database contain same schema and contains tables and columns of same name. Some tables have slight differences in terms of data types or Data type lenght.

For example if a Table on ServerA has a column named - CustomerSale with Varchar (100, Null) and a table on ServerB has a column named CustomerSale with Varchar (60, Null), how can i find if other columns have similar differences in all tables with the same name and columns in the two servers.

I am using SQL Server 2005. And the Two Servers are Linked Servers

What Script can i use to accomplish this task. Thanks

Return Missing Records Over Multiple Tables. Query Challenge!

Mar 6, 2008

I have received some data out of a relational database that is incomplete and I need to find where the holes are. Essentially, I have three tables. One table has a primary key of PID. The other two tables have PID as a foreign key. Each table should have at least one instance of every available PID.

I need to find out which ones are in the second and third table that do not show up in the first one,
which ones are in the first and third but not in the second,
and which ones are in the first and second but not in the third.

I've come up with quite a few ways of working it but they all involve multiple union statements (or dumping to temp tables) that are joining back to the original tables and then unioning and sorting the results. It just seems like there should be a clean elegant way to do this.

Here is an example:

create table TBL1(PID int, info1 varchar(10) )

Create table TBL2(TID int,PID int)

Create table TBL3(XID int,PID int)

insert into TBL1

select '1','Someone' union all

select '2','Will ' union all

select '4','Have' union all

select '7','An' union all

select '8','Answer' union all

select '9','ForMe'

insert into TBL2

select '1','1' union all

select '2','1' union all

select '3','8' union all

select '4','2' union all

select '5','3' union all

select '6','3' union all

select '7','5' union all

select '8','9'

insert into TBL3

select '1','10' union all

select '2','10' union all

select '3','8' union all

select '4','6' union all

select '5','7' union all

select '6','3' union all

select '7','5' union all

select '8','9'

I need to find the PID and the table it is missing from. So the results should look like:

PID
MISSING FROM

1
TBL3

2
TBL3

3
TBL1

4
TBL2

4
TBL3

5
TBL1

6
TBL1

6
TBL2

7
TBL2

10
TBL1

10
TBL2

Thanks all.

Basic Security Differences Between SQL And Access

Jan 16, 2008

Ok, I know it's a really basic question but I'm hoping someone will humor me. Not being a database expert I am wondering what the basic security differences are between a SQL server db and an Access db. What makes SQL a more secure choice for confidential information over Access.

I know from a useability SQL is the better choice being a multiuser access platform but I am not familar with security mechanisms employed.

I appreciate any info on this.

Thank you.

How Do I Return Data From 2 Seperate Tables Into 1 Table?

Apr 13, 2007

Hello,

I don't know if this could be done, but I will present this question...

I have an employee_table with empid, firstName, lastName, phExt columns.

I have another table called location_table that contains locationID, locationName, locPhext.

Here is the dataset from the 2 tables...

From Employee Table....

empid firstName lastName phExt

1 Ann Smith 1234

2 Barb Jones 4567

3 Jeff Teeves 8901

From Location Table

locationID locationName locPhext

1 Computer Room 3245

2 Board Room 1 8745

3 Conference Room 1 4564

Here is the data that I would like to pull in this format...

Ann Smith 1234

Barb Jones 4567

Board Room 1 8745

Computer Room 3245

Conference Room 1 4564

Jeff Teeves 8901

What SQL script could I use to produce the above results?

Thanks in advance

Find All Differences Between 2 Tables

Mar 5, 2015

I have this 2 tables:

Table1: Table2:

ID Value ID Value
--------- ---------
1 2 2 1
2 1 3 4
4 3 4 4I

need to find all differences between the 2 Tables.

A mismatch can be:

- Table1.ID exists, Table2.ID does not exist
- Table2.ID exists, Table1.ID does not exist
- Table1.ID = Table2.ID and Table1.Value <> Table2.Value

So I want to be returned:

ID Value ID Value
--------------------
1 2 NULL NULL
4 3 4 4
NULL NULL 3 4

There must be something simpler than the solution I came up with which is:select * from Table1 a full outer join Table2 b on a.Id = b.Id

WHERE a.value <> b.value or (a.value IS NULL and b.value IS NOT NULL) or (a.value IS NOT NULL and b.value IS NULL)Martin

Data Access :: Return String From Oracle Anonymous Block

Oct 30, 2015

I am trying to execute oracle procedure (anonymous block) with input and output parameters from ms sql code and return 2 values back:a number and a string.I am using **EXEC() AT** to execute oracle code and return a string back to ms sql. It works fine when returning numbers, but if I add a string output parameter, I am receiving an error:Msg 0, Level 11, State 0, Line 0...A severe error occurred on the current command.  The results, if any, should be discarded.

The server log has the following entry in exception.txt:

Exception 0xc0000005 EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION reading address 00000005031C07E0 at 0x0000000070F9C183
There is also a SQLDump file generated:
* BEGIN STACK DUMP:
*   10/28/15 12:45:38 spid 63
*   Exception Address = 000000005040C183 Module(MSVCR100+000000000003C183)

[code]....

It looks like the problem is in passing varchar2 from oracle into ms sql. I had logging code in oracle block, and it works fine. I have found a few examples of using **exec() at** but there is always only integer output passed back.

Join Two Tables And Only Return The Latest Data For The Child Table

select * from tblCharge c join tblSentence s on c.ChargeID=s.ChargeID
, all the sentences for each charge are returned. There is a field called DateCreated in tblSentence, I only want the latest sentence for each charge returned, how can I do this?
I tried to create a function to get the latest sentence for a chargeID like the following:
select * from tblCharge c join tblSentence s on s.SentenceID=LatestSentenceID(c.ChargeID) but it runs very slow, any idea to improve it?

Differences Between Mined Data And Queried Data : Association Rule

Sep 22, 2006

Dear all,

I have a table containing call records, and made a mining model from that table only. The model has 3 columns : calling_number, called_number, and target_operator, using Association Rule algorithm. The key is calling_number, input was operator, and predicted column called_number.

The result shows no rule, but there are results with item-set size of 1 (column) and 2 (column). On the top record of the result, SQL Server says there are 1891 support for called_number = 1891 and operator = 'INDOSAT'.

I queried the table with this query

SELECT DISTINCT calling_number
FROM call_records
WHERE called_number = '07786000815'
AND target_operator = 'INDOSAT';

It returns 2162 records instead of 1891. If I removed the DISTINCT qualifier, SQL Server returns 2159 records. Why is this differences with the result of mining?

Thank you,

Bernaridho

Query Run Time Differences

Mar 14, 2002

I have a server with two test instances of a data base. I have a query which creates a temp table, inserts 29 rows, perform 4 update queries to add counts and then dumpps out the results. This entire query script runs 1.33 minutes on one instance and 2.5 minutes on the other. On the production server this query now runs in 9 seconds. If I run any one of the test updates individually they execute under 2 seconds, just like the production server.
THe results are repeatable.

All are SQL 7 with all service packs on NT4 sp6. Both test data bases are backups of production from last week. I suspect some kind of caching/buffer problem, but I do not know what to look for. I am not a DBA so I have no idea what role TEMPDB plays may play in this.

Can anyone give us ideas on where to look for the performance difference? Will our impending upgrade to SQL2K solve this problem or make it worse? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Differences In Query Syntax

Jan 30, 2008

Hello All,

I am a newbie when it comes to MS SQL Server administration and I am hoping you can help me out. We are migrating from a shared webhosting platform to our own internal dedicated web / MS SQL (2005) server and have encountered an error that appears to be stemming form Query Syntax.

In our old system we could simply query via the following format:

"Select [Column] from [Table Name]"

But on the SQL Server I just set up we have to query via this format:

"Select [Column] from [Database Name].[Table Name]"

We have literally hundreds of preprogrammed Queries and it would be quite difficult to change them all. Does anyone know how I can set up SQL Server to run so that our quieries do not require the DatabaseName in the statement? I have placed the connection code below, if that helps any.

Set objConn= Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
objConn.Open "Provider=SQLOLEDB; Data Source =; Initial Catalog =; User Id =; Password="
Set objRec = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset").

Got a table as:
   Report_Date [Date/Time]
   Customer_ID [nvarchar(50)],
   Manager [nvarchar(50)]
   Amount [Decimal(18,2)]

In this regard need to show the recoveries made by each Manager from their relevant customers? In other words, instead of the customer-wise balances  need to show the difference between the balances comparing the dates. The dates are in month-end formats. For example, if Customer A has a record of $10,000 as on January 10, 2015 and the same has two entries on February 28, 2015 with balances of $4,000 and $4,000, instead of balances, need to show ($2,000). Similarly, in case of March 31, 2015 reflecting three entries amounting to $3,000 each, need to reflect a positive amount of $1,000. And where the same customer has no entry on April 30, 2015, need to reflect a negative amount of $9,000.These entries thereafter being grouped on Manager level.

Data Access To Large Tables In Sql 2005

Mar 1, 2007

hi all,

i have a large table in sql server 2005 (it has about 6 columns and 10 million records).

i need to work in a linear way on all the records (i know it sounds dumb but i need to work on all records).

now, obviously when trying to work on this table sql server get stuck for timeout or something like that...

i've noticed that a simple function like "select top 100 * from ExportTable" still works.

is there any way to have sql send me the data when it access it so that i'll still be able to proccess it on the same time, i basically work using dataset so that fixing the timeout wont be helpfull since windows probably wont allow me to load this amount of data into memory.

can any1 help?

Tables And Underlying Views W/ Access Data Projects

Dec 3, 2001

I don't know if there is a fundamental problem with what I am trying to do, or am I just having problems setting it up correctly:

I have a SQL server multi-user database. I want my users to connect to this databsase via Access 2000 Data Project. No problem there. The database consists of one main table and several views (based on the office branch that the user works from). For example there is a Chicago view, an Atlanta view, etc. that all extract different records from the same underlying table. I need my users to have FULL ACCESS (select, update, delete) to their respective VIEWS, but they cannot have access to the underlying table. I've tried several configurations and I'm beginning to think that this may not be possible... is that the case?

If it is not possible to grant access to views but not the underlying table, then what are my other options? The objective is to have a multi-user table that each user "owns a piece of" without being able to see the tables or records belonging to their peers. Do I need to setup a table for every office, and somehow link those tables into one main table? How would I avoid duplicate records being entered into the separate tables? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, as this problem has had me stumped for weeks.

Best Way To Return Data From SQL Database, Without Giving Access To Database

May 8, 2008

Hello,

I have a quick question regarding getting data from a SQL database but I am slightly confused as to the best way to handle it.

Basically on of the projects I am working on I need to send data to another company, there are several calls required to the database to bring back various options for changing the questions asked on the front end.

Up to now all that has happened is there has been a mutual agreement between myself and this other company and they have just had access to the database to call a series of stored procs which I have written for them to access the data. Recently however the situation has changed and my client wants me stop them accessing the database however they still need to recieve the information from the database they recieve now.

What will be the best way to handle this? My knowledge of SQL is farily limited presently and I am only ust getting into learning a lot more about it.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Lee

Data Access :: Combining Tables Of 2 Separate Databases For ODBC Use

Apr 29, 2015

Currently we have one customer database containing various tables. As part of requirements for a new client, we need to manage their data in a totally separate database. The tables and structure are exactly the same but we would be loading data into a separate database.

I am looking for a way to combine tables with the same name in each database when I run queries, rather than having to query each database separately. Currently we actually have many queries set up in MS Access which use an ODBC link to query the data off SQL server. I am aware it is possible to apply a UNION SELECT in Access from 2 separate ODBC connections, but this is extremely slow.So my initial question is - is there a way to provide access to the tables from both databases over the same ODBC link? If this cannot be done over ODBC I guess we can consider more "modern" methods, but ideally we want to keep this in MS Access as that is where our existing queries are based. I was hoping that some kind of view can be treated as an ODBC connection.I mentioned ideally we want to keep the reporting queries in MS Access.

Data Access :: Retrieve Schema Information Of Columns Of Tables

Sep 10, 2015

Till recently we were using the following code to retreive schema information of columns of tables

Dim schemaTable = connection.GetOleDbSchemaTable( _
System.Data.OleDb.OleDbSchemaGuid.Columns, _
New Object() {Nothing, Nothing, tableName, Nothing})

Now instead of getting the name of table (which i was using as param for filtering) i'm going to receive a sql-query. Now my question is if I were to get a query like the following :

SELECT
[EmployeeID],
[Title] + ' ' + [LastName] + ' ' + [FirstName] AS FullName,
[BirthDate],
[Address],
[City] + ', ' + [Region] + ', ' + [Country] + ' - ' + [PostalCode] AS FullAddress
FROM [dbo].[Employees]

Then how can I retrieve the schema information of only the columns present in the query.

(Its possible that i might get a query with multiple tables with joints)...

Why Would Tables Pulled In From ODBC In Access Be Different Than Tables In SQL 2005 Tables?

Jan 24, 2008

I'm new to my company, although not new to SQL 2005 and I found something interesting. I don't have an ERD yet, and so I was asking a co-worker what table some data was in, they told me a table that is NOT in SQL Server 2005's list of tables, views or synonyms.

I thought that was strange, and so I searched over and over again and still I couldn't find it. Then I did a select statement the table that Access thinks exists and SQL Server does not show and to my shock, the select statement pulled in data!

So how did this happen? How can I find the object in SSMS folder listing of tables/views or whatever and what am I overlooking?

Thanks,

Compare Data In Two Tables With SQL Query?

Jun 9, 2004

I am trying to QA data being put into a SQL database by an outside source (from Excel) and therefore need to compare two (for the sake of simplicity) tables within a database to one another.

The two tables should contain the same data, and the QA process is meant to find and report any discrepancies. The column names are slightly different.

My question then is, is it possible to write a simple SQL query which will compare the data from the two tables and select only those rows where the data in any given column does not match? My data is mostly text, not numerical.

I'm very new at using SQL and my knowledge of the query syntax is very basic.

Thanks for any help in advance!
