Data Conversion - NULL Datetime Causes Failure
Jul 9, 2007
Hi,
I have a flat file source and am bringing it into an OLE DB Destination connected to a SQL Server 2005 database. Since I am bringing in the data via a flat file, I have a conversion step in the data flow, which uses a "Data Conversion" transformation to convert each column to the appropriate destination data type.
When I run my SSIS package, if the datetime column in the flatfile is NULL, then the Data Conversion step fails. I have my Data COnversion step set to redirect error rows to an error output. So, I get all the rows with populated datetime values in the intended destination, and none of the rows with null datetime values (these go to the error destination.)
This is a problem! I need to make sure all valid rows fall through. It seems very odd to me that a NULL datetime could not be converted to a datetime data type. This makes no sense, since a datetime column can naturally hold NULL, just like any other type. So, my question is: is this a bug??? It seems to me it is. I can't believe this would be the desired behavior?!
Microsoft: please let us know whether this is expected behavior. If so, then what would the desired workaround be?
Thanks

After testing out the application i write on the local pc. I deploy it to the webserver to test it out. I get this error.
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: The conversion of a char data type to a
datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value.
Notes: all pages that have this error either has a repeater or datagrid which load data when page loading.
At first I thought the problem is with the date, but then I can see
that some other pages that has datagrid ( that has a date field) work
just fine.
anyone having this problem before?? hopefully you guys can help.
Thanks,

Here is the situation...
I am using SQL Server 2000. I have created a Store Procedure to
insert information, 4 of the fields are date types. I am using
OleDb Data Provider (System.Data.OleDb) namespace.
The dates are filled by a form (web form) on submit event, I created a
class that has functions to create my OleDb Parameters. I add the
parameters to the command and execute it through a SQL Server Stored
Procedure. In the event that I must have coded something wrong, I
tested in the SQL Query Analyzer and the IN parameters for the date I
used the getDate() method. This is where I know it is OleDb and
SQL Server Parameters.
What Converstion Format should I use in the SP for the date?
OleDb.date are doubles from some date in 1979 or something or
another. So I used an OleDbDataType.DBDate. It seems that
when the Stored Procedure uses the IN Parameters dates provided by
OleDbDataType.Date or DBDate, that it doesn't like the int
format. I am guessing that I am not converting the date in the
parameters in the Insert of the Store Procedure... this is basically
what I have...
Function to add parameters and execute SP
private int _startdate = DateTime.Now;
private int _finishdate = DateTime.Now.AddDays(30);
OleDbParameter[] myParams = {
ParamBuilder("@StarDate", OleDbType.DBDate, 8, _startdate),
ParamBuilder("@FinishDate", OleDbType.DBDate, 8, _finishdate)
};
ExecuteNonQuery("myInsert", myParams);
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CREATE PROCEDURE myInsert
@StartDate datetime, @FinishDate datetime AS
INSERT INTO myTable (STARTDATE, FINISHDATE)
VALUES (Convert(datetime, @StartDate), Convert(datetime, @FinishDate))
Please keep in mind that I am using System.Data.OleDb
namespace..... please don't tell me to use SQLClient, it seems
since I've been so adaptive of using OleDb, that it sould work just as
well. I am way too far into this to change my Provider to SQL
Client, but I promise myself that the next project (if using SQL
Server, I will be using SQLClient and I will keep using OleDb for
Oracle.) *sigh*
Help!
I've got a datetime field that I'd like to store as just the date without the time component, but still to keep it defined as a datetime field. I ran this update statement but this conversion isn't working. Conversion to char gives me what I want but I need to keep the field as a date datatype if possible.
Thanks :)
Hi,
Ive imported a data set into SQL. Now on redefining a text field to datetime, most dates that are filled come through okay.
The issue is that there are some empty fields which I'd like for it to stay empty after conversion. Now what happens is that the empty field becomes '01/01/1900' - which is throwing off our queries as we need it to be compared to other date fields.
Is there a way to keep it empty even after the datatype is changed to datetime?
Thanks a bunch!
Hi everyone,
I have a problem with a datetime field.
In the database is stored as datetime (121 format) ex. 2008-05-20 17:30:00.000
I have a simple select query (no datetime conversions used) and the result I get from the report looks like 5/20/2008 5:30 PM.
I dont want this format so i use this custom dd:MM:yyyy hh:mms
After that i get the dates like this 5/20/2008 5:30 instead of 17:30.
Any suggestions appreciated...
I have a column of DT_DBTIME data type in my Flat File source. This column is mapped to DateTime column in the SQL server destination table. A problem is that time values '12:06:39' and '13:37:45' are converted to the dates '12/30/1899 12:06:39 PM' and '12/30/1899 1:37:45 PM' correspondingly.
When I try the similar conversion from the inside Server Management Studio :
SELECT CAST('12:06:39' as DateTime), CAST('13:37:45' as DateTime)
I get the following results:
'1900-01-01 12:06:39.000' and '1900-01-01 13:37:45.000'
As you can see, the date portion is different and I expect that January 1st, 1900 is correct for this conversion. So, my questions are:
1. Why I have "previous" day in the Integration Services transformation?
2. How to fix this problem?
Thank you,
Vlad
