Data Import / Truncation - Very Long Field

Dec 7, 2007

Hi,

I am having issues importing data from a text file into a SQL database table using the import wizard in SQL Server 2005.

The text file contains polygon coordinates and a polygon name and looks like this:

"42.2342342,-121.1351398|42.3467984752,-122.2349234, ... ..., 42.1897498174,-122.131983","Polygon Name 1"

"42.2342342,-121.1351398|42.3467984752,-122.2349234, ... ..., 42.1897498174,-122.131983","Polygon Name 2"

and the SQL table looks like this:

polycoordinates varbinary(MAX)
polygonname varchar(50)

The length of the longest polygon coordinates record is about 115,000 characters. I believe the varbinary(MAX) type should hold that data, but SQL throws a truncation error every time I try to import the data.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jay

Data Truncation Does Not Trigger Truncation Error - Why?

Jun 27, 2007

Hi,

I have a data file that has numeric data that looks like:

1.123456

And this column is defined as a DT_NUMERIC(18.6) in the flat file conn mgr.

As an experiment, I changed the destination column to a NUMERIC(18,0) - hoping that this would throw a truncation error at the flat file task level (where I have Truncation on all columns set to "fail component").

Not a peep. It loaded the data into the table, chopping off the 6 digits after the decimal point.

You would THINK that this would cause an error, but no. Why is this? The flat file task complains about all kinds of things, but this is such a gross error, you would think it would catch it!

Thanks

Field Truncation In 2005

Apr 24, 2008

We are in the process of testing our software against sql 2005 as we are about to migrate up from sql 2000. One thing I have noticed is that when we insert data using our import process(.net app) if the string is too long it is truncated but still inserted into the table. but when we run the same against sql 2005 it falls over with error message about string being too long. Is there a setting in sql 2005 etc that needs to be set to allow truncation.

Import Data Into Field

Apr 11, 2008

Hi,

I am new here, and looking for some help with SQL import.

I am using SQL Server 2000.

Problem: I have a table called 'People', with a field that I wish to populate inside of it (Town).
I already have 500 records in the table.

I have a seperate csv file containing the primary key record (ID) information, and the information that I wish to put into the field (Town).

How can I import the information into the field 'Town' by inserting the correct information next to the ID in the CSV file (There are some that I do not have to import, so I cannot just insert straight in).

Best Regards

Truncation Error On Large Field

Apr 3, 2007

I have an tab delimiter ed file that I'm trying to load into a database using SSIS. The the database have a column called Comments that can hold up to 1000 Unicode characters (nvarchar[1000])

I have appropriately defined the flat file connection and marked every field to the intended length, but every time I run it it will give me the following error:

Data conversion failed. The data conversion for column "COMMENTS" returned status value 4 and status text "Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page.
All the columns have a match, this specific column is has no field longer than 1000, larger record has 528 characters in it and the fields are defined as Unicode string in the file connection.

I already ran out of ideas of what may be giving this error, anyone has an idea of what else to try?

DTS Import Of MDB In SQL Server 2000 Drops Memo Field Data

May 22, 2006

I have used DTS in SQL Server 2000 to import an MDB filed (MS ACCESS) of a table. When the table is imported the primary key is lost and the memo field data is completely gone.

I use the tranformation option in the DTS wizard to add the primary key and make sure the data type for the memo field is varchar and has a size of 8000. I need that large size since I am storing lots of html code.

When I preview the data I see the html code that is supposed to get imported. However, when I return all rows from the table in Enterprise Manager the field is empty.

So I tried to manually copy the data from the MS Access Database into SQL Server. Could not figure out if SQL Server has an interface like MS Access to simply copy data into a table. So I linked to the tables from MS Access to the SQL Server table.

When I opened the linked table I see the data in the description field. However, if I return the rows from within SQL Server no data is present.

I have some ASP code trying to read the data in the SQL Server table. However, nothing is returned and when I run the SQL Statement, nothing gets returned. The SQL statement returns all rows. All the other data is present but nothing in the description field.

What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions anyone, please!

Import Long Text From Excel Into Table

Dec 3, 2007

Hi everyone,

I've got an excel file that I want to import into a database table.
The longest text in a cell is 385 characters.
I've made the fields in the table nvarchar(1024).

I created a data flow task for the import.

When I run this task, I get the following error:

[Excel Source [1]] Error: There was an error with output column "Line Text" (52) on output "Excel Source Output" (9). The column status returned was: "Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page.".
[Excel Source [1]] Error: The "output column "Line Text" (52)" failed because truncation occurred, and the truncation row disposition on "output column "Line Text" (52)" specifies failure on truncation. A truncation error occurred on the specified object of the specified component.

is it possible that there is a restriction on the length of the text ?

Filip

Truncation Of String Data With Data Reader Source Connecting To ODBC DSN

Mar 18, 2007

A data reader is using a connection manager to connect to an ODBC System DSN . A query in the SqlCommand property is provided. Data is being truncated in the only string column . The data type in data reader output-->external columns shows as Unicode string [DT_WSTR] Length 7.

The truncated output in a text file is the first 3 characters from left to right . Changing the column order has no effect.

A linked server was created in SQL Server Management Studio to test the ODBC System DSN using the following:

EXEC sp_addlinkedserver
@server = 'server_name',
@srvproduct = '',
@provider = 'MSDASQL',
@datasrc = 'odbc_dsn_name'

Data returned using "OPENQUERY" does not truncate the string column indicating that the ODBC Driver returns data as expected with sql 2005, but not with the Data Reader.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

<Long Text> Appears From Access Database Import

When I import data from MS Access databases, some fields appear as

the table to Access, update the field, and then import again.

There's got to be an easier way. What am I missing here?

The field in Access is of type 'memo'.

How To Edit &<long Text&> Field

Jun 12, 2008

I know that similar items have been posted before but I have not found a solution to my issue by reading them.

I have a text field which holds amendment details and it cannot be updated through QA. I have 50 records which I have had to manually update through Enterprise Manager. I have been able to edit the amendment details field of 48 of these records. However for 2 records the amendment details field contains <long text> and as we all know, there does not seem to be an easy way to edit these.
Before I give up for good, does anyone have any suggestions?
Help much appreciated.

String Data, Right Truncation

Oct 17, 2006

Hi,

I am trying to execute one huge select statement from my application using ODBC, but I am getting this error:

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]String data, right truncation.

the select statement is bigger than 2000 characters, but I don't have any long string column, just strings and numbers. How can I work around this?

Is there any max size? Because if I use less than 1000 characters, it works fine.

I am using Centura/SqlWindows, Native Sql Server ODBC and SqlServer 2005. unfortunately, I can not use Ole from my application.

Forcing A Line Break In Long Text Field.

Mar 14, 2008

I have to output as one filed name, mailing address, and phone of each company that we do business with.
the out put must look as follows:
Company Name
Store number: #####
Street Address 1
Street Address 2
City, State Zip + 4
Phone: (###) ###-####

Each piece of data is a single field and will have to be concatenated into one.
How do I force the line breaks where I need them?

Also each piece of data will be compared to a €śsource€? for validity and I will need to mare the individual data pieces red where €śwrong€?. Like so:
VALID MY DATA
Company Name Company Name
Store number: ##### Store number: #####
Street Address 1 Street Address 1
Street Address 2 Street Address 2
City, State Zip + 4 City, State Zip + 4
Phone: (###) ###-#### Phone: (###) ###-####

Any ideas on how to do this? I have used IIF for conditional formating of field colors in the past, but my expierence is that it changes the WHOLE display field not just piece of data the IIF is wrapped around.

How To You Convert An Oracle Long Field To Varchar 8000

Jan 17, 2007

I need to handle this conversion in SSIS and not on oracle.

The following expression is executed on a datatype of dt_str with a length of 8000.

SUBSTRING((DT_STR,8000,1252)Column_name,1,8000)

Records longer then 4000 bytes take an error path

The next expression with 4000 bytes works but there is truncation.

SUBSTRING((DT_STR,4000,1252)Column_name,1,4000)

Basically I need to know how to cast a text or ntext into a varchar or nvarchar using ssis but I need to capture the first 8000 byes without truncation.

is this possible?

Using SSIS Reading From oracle I can convert to a text or ntext field but I am having a hard time going directly to a varchar.

MsSQL Image Data Type Truncation

Mar 4, 2004

Hello, I am trying to store pictures in an Image data type column of my MsSQL table from PHP, or even SQL Query Analyzer for that matter. In PHP I use the bin2hex() function to get the HEX equivilent of the picture, I'm sure everyone knows that when you convert a Binary file to HEX, the file size is doubled. When I try to insert the HEX file into my table with a query like:
INSERT INTO PicTable (fileType, fileData) VALUES ('jpg', 0x47494638396164014100f70000000000ffffff2f2f2fe800020c0c0ce....)

MsSQL will store EXACTLY HALF of the file. The byte count of the stored HEX data and original Binary data is exactly the same, so when I try to extract the file and display it, in a browser window for instance, I can see exactly half of the image. I have tried everything I can think of to fix this, but I am at a loss. Does anyone know of anything that would cause this strange behavior. I have no problems at all doing this with MySQL's BLOB data type. Thanks in advance for any help.

How To : Truncation : Can I Write A Log Entry Whenever Data Is Truncated?

Jul 3, 2006

I'm reading data from a flat file source. If some data gets truncated, i have the option of 'ignoring', 'redirecting' or 'fail component'.

What i'd like to do is, to allow the data to be truncated, but i'd also like to write a log entry so that i can know that a particular rows data has been truncated.

I've tried 'redirecting' the row to a script component (as transformation), but i don't know how to determine if the error is truncation or not, not only that, i can't redirect the row back to the 'original' flow, which is a derived field column.

Any ideas on how to do ?

Cheers.

Incorrect Truncation Warning In Data Flow

Feb 5, 2008

All,

I'm getting a strange truncation warning in a data flow, similar to what is posted here:

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2629939&SiteID=1

In my case, I have a column in a pipeline that is DT_STR with a length of 20. I'm trying to insert data from the data flow into a table (via an OLEDB destination) in which the destination column is varchar(50). When I review the metadata throughout the data flow, everything looks correct. However, I get a truncation warning stating that data loss might occur when inserting data into the string column of length 20 from a source column of length 50. Thus, it looks like the data flow is swapping the metadata for the source and destination columns when validating the data flow (and thus, producting the warning).

This is a pretty complex data flow, so I'd rather not have to rebuild it. And changing the metadata of the source column to be DT_STR with a length of 50 is going to wreak minor havoc in the data flow (as lots of things use that column).

Has anyone seen anything similar to this? The post referenced above deals with a package that is constructed programmatically, but the package I'm working with was created the old fashioned way...

Any help would be appreciated.

Bulk Insert Data Conversion Error (truncation)

Dec 4, 2006

hi

"Bulk insert data conversion error (truncation) for row 1, column 1 (id)."

when you get the error above or similar in sql server 2000 does it continue inserting the data by truncating it or does it stop beacause looking at the data that i have got it seems to continue inserting the data but just truncates the colunm. i have tried it several time its seeems to be consistent.

I have data that has white spaces after the actual data e.g. '00093 ' hence i am happy aslong as i can be sure that it does always continue as i will be loading alot of data using a similar process.

hence my question is that will it load all the data all the time and just truncate it to fit the column size?

SQL Server 2012 :: Bulk Load Data Conversion Error (truncation)

May 15, 2014

Is there a switch I can use to force a bulk insert and if data is truncated, I'm good with that. The truncated data, in this case, is not data I can use anyway if it is long enough to be truncated.

I need to keep the field at VARCHAR(23) and if I expand it, I won't be able to join on it after the file load completes. I'd like the data to be inserted (truncated if need be) and then I'll deal with the records that are truncated after I load the file.

IMPORT New Data Since Last IMPORT - DTS/Stored Procs?

Jan 7, 2004

Hello:

I am not sure how to implement the following, but I believe it entails using DTS, and hopefully it is fine that I post it here b/c ultimately I will need this backend data for my frontend .aspx pages:

On a weekly basis, I need to IMPORT some data located on a remote Oracle DB into SQL Server 2k. Since there is so much data to transfer, I would only like to transfer the data that is new to the table since the last IMPORT, i.e. a week ago and leave behin the OLD data.

Is DTS the correct way to go or do I have more control via DTS with STORED PROCEDURES? Does anyone have any good references for me?

On a similar note, once this Oracle data is IMPORTED into a certain table, I would like to EXPORT some of these NEWLY acquired rows matching certain criteria into another table for auditing purposes. For this scenario, should I implement a TRIGGER UPDATE event here on the first table?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

How can I set the text limit to unlimited?
Could it be something else?

Import Problem With Varchar(max) Field

I'm trying to import some Assessor data from a text file into a table and the field for Legal Description (column 2 in the source text file) in the table is of data type varchar(max) because some of the data goes over the 8K size. I get an error on the first row of importing that refers to column 2 (see 'Initial errors' below). I read the related post and changed the size of input column 2 to 8000 and got this error. Finally I set the size of the of input column 2 to 4000 and it ran. So I'm thinking there is a limit on the size of varchar data that can be imported. Just want to clarify what that limit is and how I might go about importing this data.

Import Large Field From SSIS

Apr 20, 2007

Hi,

I am making a SSIS package that imports data from a application using a custom ODBC driver. The field in the application is set to be a "longvarchar" type field and can be from 2 characters to 2MB of data.

I've created a ODBC data connection in the SSIS package and use a "DataReader Source" to read the data I need. The sql statement is very simple

Select log from tablename
When I try to run the SSIS package with that statement it just goes to yellow on the DataReader Source and stops. It stays like that until I stop it. If I select other fields except for that field it works fine. Also I've been able to get it to succeed getting the log field if I select a log record that's not too big. The largest one I've been able to get is 800 characters, but I got one with 2500 characters that just stops on yellow.

In the Progress log the last line says:

[DTS.Pipeline] Information: Execute phase is beginning.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this?
