Data Space Available
Apr 26, 1999
I just ran a script that deleted over 100,000 records. I look in enterprise manager and it tells me I lost 15 megs of space. I expected I would have gained space after the deletes. Truncate log at checkpoint is selected so I am puzzled.
I went into ISQL and ran sp_spaceused and got the following results:
data: before 989126 after 822436 gain of 166690
index: before 340834 after 338108 gain of 2726
Where did the 169416 KB of space go to and how can it accurately reflect the correct sapce in enterprise manager?
Thanks,
Ivan

While printing the report, Â data print with blank space and move to continue data to next page.Â
Departure flight : 70 rows
First Page           : 42 rows printed
Second Page     : 23  rows printed  [ Supposed to be print 28 ,  if the total count of records more than 23 and less than 42 then the page print only 23 records ]
Third Page          : 5 rows printed

First Page           : 42  rows printed [Report max. record allowed to print 42 rows so if total record is 42 then print perfectly ]

I am generating a Report from Sql Data Source in Sql Server 2005 and viewing the Report in Report viewer control of Visual Studio 2005.
The data in the Data Source contains string with multiple spaces (for example €œ Test String €œ) but when they get rendered in Report viewer control, multiple spaces gets converted to single space €? Test String €œ.
I tried following solutions
1) Replacing spaces with €œ €?
2) Inserting <pre> tag before the string and </pre> tag after the string (Also tried <Pre> instead of <pre>)
But in all the cases result is same. The Report Viewer control is showing €œ €? instead of space and €œ<Pre>€? tag instead of preserving spaces.
Please provide me a solution so that spaces can be preserved in Report Viewer.

I need a query that checks each row in a column (hardness) to see if the last character is a "space". The column holds numbers (73.45) but is a varchar 50 type. It will always be the 5th character but it would be nice to not make this assumption. Please help!!
Thanks.

Hi.. I was doing a good maintenance on my DB and my trans log LDF keep growing until 30GB but my DB data file MDF is only 2GB. I found the two following method to reduce my log size.
Method 1: I used veritas to backup log file with truncate
Method 2: I used the shrink database option in Enterprises manager to shrink it (file chosen=log , use default option)
After doing that, I found my LDF log file is still about the same size=27GB but when I see clearly, from the shrink database windows, the log spaced used reduced to only 100MB, the allocation log space is still 27GB. Why? How to make the LDF smaller to be the around the same size as the space used 100MB?

This is driving me bananas. Can't find any info on this anywhere....SQL 2000 seems to replace double space with a single space when I seta varchar field to " " (2spaces), it only stores " " (1space). Whyon earth would microsoft do this? If I save 2 spaces - I WANT TO SEE2 SPACES!!!!Can anyone help? Is this a database setting? Is this due to usingvarchar?Any help appreciated.Colin Hale

I have a quick question maybe someone can answer me:
Suppose I have a database with data and log on same device, by default,
3 segments are created: system, default and logsegment.
Is the allocation , or any limit, among these segments(i.e. for system table, other table and indexes , log) done by the system ? or will the space required be allocated when they are needed ?
(i.e. I can have a situation of 10% database space used for data, 90% used for logging and I can also have 90% used for data, 10% used for log ?)
Is there any control us we can make ?
Of course, for recovery and performance reason, it is always recommended to have data and log on 2 diff. device.

Thanks for anybody that can help me with this.
When I double click on a database in the Enterprise Manager and the "Database Space Available" (in the Database tab) always shows 0.00 MB even though there is space available. This only happens to one of our database. The data device is 1.8GB and log device is 360MB and I've allocated all the space from device to database.
We're using SQL Server 6.5 sp3 in NT 4.0 sp3.
Anybody knows why is SQL Server reporting 0.00MB when you know there is space avaialble. I need to know the data space available and log space available so that I can expand it when the space runs low. Please help.
Thank you,
Jimmy Jen

We have a database that doesn't seem to be growing on its own correctly (or seems like it isn't). This database has been running really slow for the last week and we think this may be whu
Current size is listed at 963mb while allocated size is 959mb. Trans log size is set to auto-grow and is allocated 4mb
Can we change that number on the fly, and also change the the growth settings without affecting the system?
Being a live system we obviously do not want any downtime, but believe this will help with our slowdown.
Any other ideas would also be appreciated
Thanks!

Hello guys.
I want to konw how many rows a data page could contains.
So i do some test to prove it.
The follow sql scripts i used:
create table table1
(
col1 char(2)
)
go
declare @a int
set @a=0
while @a<700
begin
insert into table1 values('aa')
set @a=@a+1
end
I add 700 recrods to table1,then use dbcc page command oversee the data page.
The result indicate that:the whole recrods are all in one data page, and the "m_freeCnt" flag equal 396.
(8192-96-700*9-700*2=396)So i think i can add more records to the data page.To my surprise, after i add a new record, sql server 2005 allocates a new data page and assign the recrod to the new space....
any suggestion?

Hello,
Somebody know how to reduce the space allocated for the transaction log space for my SQL_DB ?
3700 MB allocated but only 100 MB used and 3600 MB are free !
Transaction log properties :
Automatically grow file are filled
file growth by percent = 5%
maximum file size - restrict filegrowth = 3700 MB (we can't reduce it !)
Thank you for your precious help !

In OO programming, data references, such as pointers in C++ or objects in C#. If the reference is null, it points to no object, or to 0x000000, thus the "referenced" object is non existent and the "object" takes up no RAM.
I know pointers are not the same as Database values, but what I'm interested in knowing is, on the bits and bytes level, what is a "NULL" and how much space does it take up, as much as is the field? Or just one byte? and when a NULL is replaced does that cause a shifting in the data of the database page or does the new data simply replace the null?

Hi All ..
I have 2 disk drive
C and D
The SQL Server data and log files are stored in D: drive
I have only 575 MB free spaces in C: drive
I have a Sql data base name StoresDB and there is a table name CustTBL
There are almost 6555500 rows in that table
My issues are whenever I am querying the CustTbl from Query Analyzer
(Select * from CustTbl)
The C: space decreased to 40 kb
And the same time,I am not getting all the rows in the query result
In Query analyzer Message Tab it is showing (6555151 row(s) affected)
But In the Grid Tab it is showing Grid#1 :6318847 rows or sometime less rows....
What is the reason to for these two issues?
I have updated the index and statistics for CustTbl TABLE but not got any changes
..
When I closed the query window the C: drive again showing 575 MB free space

I have a field in a table that contains addresses e.g
15 Green Street
5F Brown Steet
127 Blue Street
1512 Red Road
I want to output the numbers into one column and the address to another column as i need to produce a report that only shows streets and roads but no numbers.
So basically no matter how many characters before the first space which can be numbers or letters i want these output into two columns.

I have scenario where I have process that loades data into SQL server 2012 database by doing some manipulation on data like sorting , aggregation, etc. Once this process is completed it's not free up the Tempdb space. If I restart the database, then it does.
is there any way (apart from shirking) to release space for Tempdb, like writing some post SQL queries to delete/ truncate the data and logs from temp db?

I am dealing with what I believe is Oracle that is the source of a SQL View.
I am seeing a data type of Integer in the View, but I am not able to see what makes up that View. When I query the View, I can see that an Integer data type column is storing a blank space. I use ISNUMERIC(ColumnName) = 0 and there are a lot of rows that show as a zero length blank space, or text, or something. I just know that it is not an Integer.
I have attempted to CAST and Convert this value, but it will not. I have changed the data type on the table that is being inserted in too, and it still fails with a Conversion error. I have tried REPLACE(), but still the same conversion error.

I have a table 300+GB. it holds 10 years of Data. I need to delete 5 years of data and put it to another server so I can have more space.
If I delete 5 years of data, Transaction log gets so huge and size of the database even gets bigger because of the .ldf file which even gets bigger! I think I can shrink the log file and the data file. Is this the best way to do it?

I have some sql below..
SELECT
t.Doctor, t.LedgerAmount, t.TransactionDate,
ISNULL(lg.LedgerGrpDesc, 'No Sales Group') AS LedgerGroup
FROM
Transactions t
LEFT OUTER JOIN LedgerGroups lg ON t.LedgerDescription = lg.dbLedgerDesc
[Code] .....
My problem is that the data in t.LedgerDescription sometimes now has either leading/trailing white space or more likely special chars so the join against lg.dbLedgerDesc doesn't always work.
I can't change the source of the data to strip out special chars/white space so am stuck on how to deal with it.
I tried using LTRIM & RTRIM in the where clause but this doesn't seem to have had any effect...
LEFT OUTER JOIN LedgerGroups lg ON LTRIM(RTRIM(t.LedgerDescription)) = lg.dbLedgerDesc

I am using sql server 2008 r2 on my end. I have created a database named testDB. I have a lot of tables with some log tables in this. some tables have contain lack of records in log table.
So my purpose is that I want to fix the table size of those tables(log tables) and want to move records in other database table placed on another location. So my database has no problem.
is there any way to make such above steps which I want for my database?
Is there already built any such functionality in sql server?

Today we received an issue on an application database on internal free space on the DB is 0% that was designed with as below
name   fileid   filename   filegroup   size   maxsize   growth   usage
XX   1   I:DataMSSQL.1MSSQLDataNew XX.mdf   PRIMARY   68140032 KB   Unlimited   0 KB   data only
XX_log   2   I:DataMSSQL.1MSSQLDataNew XX_log.LDF   NULL   1050112 KB   2147483648 KB   102400 KB   log only
XX_2   3   I:DataMSSQL.1MSSQLDataNew XX_2.ndf   PRIMARY   15458304 KB   Unlimited   0 KB   data only
XX_3   4   I:DataMSSQL.1MSSQLDataNew XX_3.ndf   PRIMARY   13186048 KB   Unlimited   0 KB   data only
XX_4   5   I:DataMSSQL.1MSSQLDataNew XX_4.ndf   PRIMARY   19570688 KB   Unlimited   204800 KB   data only
XX_5   6   I:DataMSSQL.1MSSQLDataNew XX_5.ndf   PRIMARY   19591168 KB   Unlimited   204800 KB   data only
2 of the secondary data files had its autogrowth enabled to unrestricted with 200MB and 3 of the data files including primary had its Autogowth turned OFF. Application use is complaining that there is no internal freespace on the DB.
What fails to understand us is that when the Auto growth was already TURNED OFF on 3 data files ( 1 primary and 2 secondary ) still why was the application trying to increase the space on the .mdf and .ndf files; as well when the Autogrowth is TURNED ON on 2 of the secondary data files, why was the DB not able to expand these file groups when the autogrowth is already turned off on 3 of its  other files.
What more data i need to ensure i submit an analysis to this.

in microsoft doc there is written on the topic of BP Extensions with SSD's in SQL Server 2014: only clean pages are written to disk... does this mean data pages that have not been modified yet? or also those data pages that have already been modified, and where log has finished writing and the transaction has been marked as commited??
why are there clean data pages being written to L2 cache to make space for other not modified pages? I mean, shoudnt they be modified first, before letting other unmodified data pages into the Cache? I mean they have still to be modified..that makes no sense to me to page them out and page them in again just for other data pages...

I've production sql server 7 sp3 on windows NT. I had a 8GB data file ofwhich 5GB were used and 3GB were unused. I wanted to take back the unused3GB.So I did the following with EM GUI:1. I tried to "truncate fre space from end of the file". Didn't truncatethe file. I believe there was no empty space at the end of the file.2. Next I chose the option to "shrink file to 5GB". And to my horror thedata file instead of taking just 5GB took the empty spaces also and the sizeof the used data file went to 8GB.Any idea what's going on?TIA,SP
