Migration Of VB Net 2005 (Pro) App Using Access 2000 DB (DAO && ADO) To SQL Express
Nov 3, 2006I've downloaded the migration tool to convert an Access 2000 DB to a SQL DB. The VB code utilizes DAO (3.6) for hourly automatic compaction and the creation of an encrypted security database. ADO is used for the data maintenance functions. I expect the current connection methodology of ODBC using Jet 4.0 will need to be modified (many articles here address this). All the SQL code is inline and also must be modified. The Coldfusion code utilizes Micrsoft Access with Unicode via an ODBC connection with only SQL Select statements. At another job, I migrated an Informix 7 database to MS SQL 7 and for the most part the SQL code remained the same except for the wildcard spec from * to %.
I'm looking for insights and/or shortcuts on this effort, primarily in the SQL command mods area. I'm perusing the threads here as we speak, but hoped someone knew of a specific thread I could go to....laziness is alive and well for us chronologically gifted people, i.e. over 55.
Any help or links are greatly appreciated!

I have an old Windows 2000 BackOffice server (Retail but with no media) that hosts a small database (<50mb) that is hosted on the local SQL Server 2000 installation. The network has 8 PCs that connect to the database via ODBC connections. I just purchased a new server running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition (OEM).
What I€™m Trying to Accomplish:
I want to decommission the old 2000 BackOffice server and move the database to the new 2003 Standard server. I€™m trying to do this on the cheap, so I really want to avoid spending thousands on a new SQL server license.
Things I€™m Considering:
1) Migrating the database from SQL 2000 Standard to SQL 2005 Express
2) Moving the database from SQL 2000 Standard to MS Access
3) Purchasing SQL Server 2005 licenses and upgrading
4) Purchasing SQL 2000 Server licenses
The options are pretty much listed in my order of preference. I€™d like to move from SQL 2000 Server to SQL 2005 Express, but I haven€™t really found a lot of material on the subject since people customarily go the other way.
Any advice or alternative recommendations would be much appreciated!

Help With Data Migration 2000 To 2005
Mar 7, 2008Hi all. I'll say from the get go that I'm no SQL guru. I'm primarily a web dev who has been given the data jobs kind of by default so I'm definitely no DBA.
Anyway, having established my noobness, I have encountered an issue. The employer recently decided to upgrade our databases from 2000 to 2005 and I have been tasked to migrate the data from old to new. I have discovered the Import/Export Wizard and got it to move all the data in a dev database we use...but there was one problem. It seems that the tables in 2000 that had columns designated as identity columns do not have the identity attribute when they arrive in 2005.
I haven't figured a way to alter them to give them that attribute once they're in 2005 so I'm wondering if there's something I can do/change in the import process that would retain the identity property of the columns if I were to re-import them.
This is my first migration attempt so dumping it and starting over is no great loss...but any help would be most appreciated.

The Data schemas are the same in both (tables, relationships, key and triggers).
Using the wizard I am trying to import data from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005. The issue I face is to manage the Idenity columns. I do not want the identity values from the SQL 2000 DB which may be at say 5000, instead I want to use the identity values from the SQL 2005 database which will problably start at 1
Is there a way to do this, should I use a custom query instead of a direct table dump. If using a custom query do I need to just specify a Select query or does it have to be a specific "INSERT INTO Table ..." type query
If I do import the data directly with Identity "ON" how can I advance the identity column value to current +1 on the SQL 2005 table.

Feb 12, 2008hi, i need some help here,i made a simple data driven website in my development PC, at first, i used MS Access for my data base then i migrate it to sql server express 2005, and it works fine when i try to run it in my development PC with my IIS. but of course i will be deploying it to a real server, in our office were i will deploy my data driven site, we have a PC server Win Server 2003 with SQL Server 2000 Enterprise (im not pretty sure by the name but i know its not a free version, its something like a 2000 sql version with a word enterprise at the end).so my question is, i am developing an ASPdotNET site originally used SQL server 2005 express,how can i migrate my site to the Win Server 2003 and my database from SQL Server 2005 express to SQL server 2000 enterprisewill it work?? if not, what are the possible solution that i can do in cases like mine?i used Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Ed. in making my sites, and its DOES NOT allow databases in SQL Server 2000!!!!!it says "can't recognize the database"i hope you can help me with this.Thanks-SALAMAT PO....=)

Nov 21, 2006Hi, I am trying to create a connection string that will connect to a SQL Server 2005 Registration on a remote machine. I have a SQL Server 2000 registration (installed) on the same machine and so I think there may be a conflict. The SQL 2005 registration is denoted as HARDYSQL5 and the 2000 registration is merely HARDY (the machine name). I need to connect to a database on the HARDYSQL5 registration but I am not connecting. I have tried various connection strings but none have worked. I get a Login failure. I think this is red herring because I doubt its even finding the database.I can connect to the 2000 db with:"Server=HARDY;Database=Perimeter;UID=use;pwd=example;" But its fails with the following, for example:"Server=HARDYSQL5;Database=Perimeter;UID=use;pwd=example;" "Server=HARDYSQL5;Database=HARDYSQL5Perimeter;UID=use;pwd=example;" "Server=HARDY;Database=SQL5Perimeter;UID=use;pwd=example;" I'm gon go nuts. I have an aplication in VB6 that uses an ODBC to link to a SQL database.
Until today all my clientes had SQL Server2000 and my aplication worked fine.
Some of my cliente have now SQL 2005 and my application still woks fine except in one of them.
In this particular cliente it gives an error when the application tries to read/write a particular table and a particular column.
This column is data type BIT and my code is
...
Myrs("Servida")= true
...
Any idea why the error appens? And why only in a particular machine and not all of them with SQL2005?
What can I do? I changed the code for
myrs("servida")=abs(cint(true)) and solved the problem, but is not the way that I want to go. I do not want to change thousands of line of code where I read/write a column in the database data type BIT.
Is there a way to configure SQL Server 2005 the way that it controls data type BIT?

I am using it right now on xp-pro platform on my home computer but I also have a website where I would like also to use it
right now I do not have problem accessing the server with windows authentication but I keep getting errors when I switch to sql server authentication

SQL Sever 2005 Express Ed And The Installation Of SQLEXPR_Toolkit
Feb 27, 2007Hello, I am experiencing difficulty with the installation of sqlexpr_toolkit for sql server 2005 express. I have installed sql server 2005 express with advanced services. That has installed correctly. However, when I try to install the sqlexpr_toolkit with the feature 'Business Intelligence Studio' , the toolkit does not install; the toolkit does not show up in the program list in the"Add & Remove Programs" window. When I try to 'Change' the sql server 2005 in the "Add & Remove Programs" list and try to upgrade the feature components with the Business Intelligence feature, I get a error that states"cannot find devenv.exe." Both versions of setup files for sqlexpr_avd and sqlexpr_toolkit are the same. I previously had an earlier version of sql server 2005 express loaded but it was not the beta version. And I uninstalled the sql server apps, except I did not uninstall .NetFramework 2.0.
I have found some of the Business Inteligence files installed in the path: C:ProgramFilesMicrosoftVisualStudio8common7IDEPrivateAssemblies
I was wondering if I need to uninstall everything and start over. I also had previously installed Visual Web Developer Express and Visual Basic Express 2005 which are working okay. Do I need to obtain updates for these applications in order to get Business Intelligence Studio to install?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I really would llike to use the Business Intelligence Studio application.

Sep 6, 2006I recently upgraded from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005. I have Oracle databases I need to share data with. I was using the Heterogeneous Services (hsodbc) from Oracle and connected to SS 2000 fine. Since I've upgraded, I can't use hsodbc to connect to my SS 2005 database. I get the following error:

I have been reading this forum for several years (I think about 5 or so) constantly finding answers to all of my questions. So Thank You guys for all the time you spend here sharing your knowledge.
However, looks like it is time to ask for some help/advice.
Here is the situation.
We (company I work for/client of the company I work for) had a (sort of) web site which created very heavy load to the database (small web interface + heavy use of web services, "I want a blah quote" application. Dealing with performance and space allocation problems I've splitted data into several DB files (and did some other thing not important for my current problem). That helped somehow for some time. Eventually problem has been solved by migrating DB to MSSQL9 and by complete rebuild of existing web application. So old "not good" application/DB was left and no longer in active use, however client time to time goes to the old app (1-2 times per month) to extract some data for analysis.
Here is the problem.
1. I want to join all of that data into a single data file. (the thing I don't know how to do)
2. To free up hard drive by moving this database to external usb drive. I know! I know that it must NOT be done under any normal circumstances. However, this database is literally read only and there is mostly no use of it, so performance is no longer a subject of consideration. But it will help me to free up valuable space on hard drive array.
So, bottom line.
Would you be so kind to show me direction to dig in, which will help me to resolve problem #1?

2. Download SQL server upgrade advisor on current SQL Server 2000 (windows 2000) and run a report.
3. Back up (Full) SQL Server 2000
4. Script logins and schedule tasks on SQL 2000
5. Restore database on SQL 2005
6. Create jobs by runing Jobs scripit on SQL 2005
7. Create users and passwords by running the exported script file.

I am trying to migrate Databases from MS SQL 2000 (server A) to MS sql 2005 (server B).
The problem i have when i use database copy wizard is that it gives an error and the login will not be migrated .
I tried backup and restore of the databases as well as detach and attach.All cases the logins will have a problem.
For example say for database intranet all the tables stored procedures etc gets migrated but under security >>users (say intrauser) i double click user and the the login name wont appear .and when i try to close the window it says login name must be specified(SQLmanagerUI)
Please help.

I am using Windows XP Prof, SP2 and having Sql Server 2000, SP4 and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services SP1, and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit SP1 installed. The toolkit is the one which created me the DTS folder in the root with this applicattion:

I start now this Wizard and choose from Sql server - which is my 2000 version and to my sql express version, id/pw or windows authentication. I receive then the message:
Cannot continue for the following reason:
1) You have chosen a server that does not contain any packages.
2) The server you have chosen is neither a sql server 2000 nor sql server 7
The SSIS Migration Wizard can only load packages from those servers.
Nice. I am having Sql server 2000 and want to go to 2005.
What I am doing from ? Do I need to create some packages on Sql server 2000 to be able to proceed this task ?

i was just thrown into SQL stuff at my job. For now I need to complete a migration, but soon i'm being sent to training to make sure that I can do this easier later. Heres my question
I backed up the database, then restored it to the new server. That worked fine. I couldn't log in...so i did some searching and found out about the sp_change_users_login command, I got my login fixed and I can log in. Now, I have about 1000 other users to change and I don't want to do those manually. Noone is using this database, so if needed, I could back it up and restore it differnetly if needed or If someone can give me a .sql file to run to fix all usernames and tell me how to run a .sql (i'm that new to it) that would be REALLY appreciated. Anyway, thanks in advance, looking forward to SQL administration.

Apr 4, 2007OK so I'm just the Network Admin here, but our DBA's are off doing other stuff. So I thought I may inquire here about how the easiest way to migrate from SQL Server 2000 to 2005? The first server I'd like to migrate is just databases with a few users, no DTS packages or anything like that... The only problem is that there are several hundred db's, so moving them one at a time is not an option. Has anyone here had successful experience with doing this? Thanks in advance for your help!

Migration From SQL Server 2000 To 2005
Mar 2, 2007I have a fairly large web application that was built with SQL Server 2000 and .NET 1.1. We're planning on moving to .NET 2.0 eventually, but there's a lot of work to be done before that happens. In the short term, we're looking to purchase a new database server and would like to upgrade to SQL Server 2005 at the same time. Is it as simple as recreating our databases on this new system and changing the connection string, or are there other gotchas? As far as what we're doing with SQL Server 2000, it's really nothing more than tables, views, and stored procedures. Thanks in advance for any advice.
