Data Returned From .WriteXML Is Different Than What Is Returned In Query Analyzer.

Jun 20, 2006

I have a strange problem. I have some code that executes a sql query. If I run the query in SQL server query analyzer, I get a set of data returned for me as expected. This is the query listed on lines 3 and 4. I just manually type it into query analyzer.

Yet when I run the same query in my code, the result set is slightly different because it is missing some data. I am confused as to what is going on here. Basically to examine the sql result set returned, I write it out to an XML file. (See line 16).

Why the data returned is different, I have no idea. Also writing it out to an XML file is the only way I can look at the data. Otherwise looking at it in the debugger is impossible, with the hundreds of tree nodes returned.

If someone is able to help me figure this out, I would appreciate it.

3.   string sql = @"SELECT a.RealEstMarket FROM MarketMap a, RegionMap b " + 4."WHERE  a.RegionCode = b.RegionCode";

 14.   dsMarketList.DataSetName="RegionMarket";
 15.  dsMarketList.Tables[0].TableName = "MarketList";
 16.    dsMarketList.WriteXml(Server.MapPath ("myXMLFile.xml" )); // The data written to  17. myXMLFile.xml is not the same data that is returned when I run the query on line 3&4

Transact SQL :: Summarizing Data Returned By Join Query

I have a table (edw_sbx_bt.jjenkins_OVERAGE2) of 40,000 MA_NUM.

When I run the query below it returns 4 million rows.  How can I write a query that will return the 40,000 MA_NUM (in edw_sbx_bt.jjenkins_OVERAGE2) with the sum total of MA_PAID_AMT associated with each?

Select A Subset Of Data From The Dataset Returned By A Union Query

Mar 30, 2004

hi all

Any day, another question. I love you guys.

I want to select a subset of data from a dataset returned by either another subquery or a union.

e.g. this is how i would do it in oracle, but i have no idea how this can be done in mssql or whether it's possible at all.

select * from
(
select col1, col2, col3 from table1
union
select col1, col2, col3 from table 2
)
where col1 = 'blah'

in essence oracle treats the data returned by the subquery as a table that it would select from.

how would i do the same in mssql?

thank you

James :)

Data Access :: Recordset Returned By Query Have A Status Of Closed?

Oct 8, 2015

I'm running the following SQL query from LabVIEW, a graphical programming language, using the built in capabilities it has for database connectivity:

    DECLARE @currentID int
    SET @currentID = (SELECT MIN(ExperimentID) FROM Jobs_t WHERE JobStatus = 'ToRun');
    UPDATE [dbo].[Jobs_t]
    SET [JobStatus] = 'Pending'
    WHERE ExperimentID = @currentID;
    SELECT @currentID AS result
<main.img>

This is the analogous code to main() is a C-like language. The first block, which has the "Connection Information" wire going into it, opens a .udl file and creates an ADO.NET _Connection reference, which is later used to invoke methods for the query.

<execute query.img>

This is the inside of the second block, the one with "EXE" and the pink wire going into it. The boxes with the gray border operate much like "switch" statements. The wire going into the "?" terminal on these boxes determines which case gets executed. The yellow boxes with white rectangels dropping down are invoke nodes and property nodes; they accept a reference to an object and allow you to invoke methods and read/write properties of that object. You can see the _Recordset object here as well. <fetch recordset.img>

Here's the next block to be executed, the one whose icon reads "FETCH ALL". We see that the first thing to execute on the far left grabs some properties of the recordset, and returns them in a "struct" (the pink wire that goes into the box that reads "state"). This is where the code fails. The recordset opened in the previous VI (virtual instrument) has a status of "closed", and the purple variant (seen under "Read all the data available") comes back empty.

The rest of the code is fairly irrelevant, as it's just converting the received variant into usable data, and freeing the recordset reference opened previously. My question is, why would the status from the query of the recordset be "closed"? I realize that recordsets are "closed" when the query returns no rows, but executing that query in SSMS returns good data. Also, executing the LabVIEW code does the UPDATE in the query, so I know that's not broken either.

Query Results - Not Getting Different Values Returned For Each Row

I am getting the following results from my query that contains a subquery, but I don't understand why the values in the [Total Volume M_Active_Previous] are being repeated with the same value. I should be getting different values returned for each row like in the [Total Volume M_Active] column.

Why the values are all the same and how I can fix this?

Can SQL Assign Zero When NULL Is Returned From A Sub-query?

Dec 26, 2006

Hi Folx,
I am new to
SQL Server. I am rolling summed values from table profile to two columns in table txn. When the value for one (not necessarily both...) column is null, can that value be translated to zero? Or must I write a procedure or use a cursor?
Versions:
Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services Designer
Version 9.00.1399.00

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
9.00.1399.00

For example, when version_count for a particular transaction_id is null in the profile table but profile_count has summable integers, how do I update the version_count to zero in the same pass that I update the profile_count?

update txn
set
version_count =
(
select
sum(a.version_count)
from
profile a
where
a.transaction_id=txn.transaction_id
and
a.extraction_date=txn.extraction_date
and
txn.version_count is null
),
profile_count =
(
select
count(*)
from
profile a
where
a.transaction_id=txn.transaction_id
and
a.extraction_date=txn.extraction_date
and
txn.profile_count is null

Query Round Off To Zero...no Real Values Returned Ever.

Apr 29, 2004

The query below gets percentage of coils for a location by anneal cycle. It does this correctly (ie, if you change count(*)/b.total to count(*), b.total ... show both columns, the numbers its pulling are correct), but in its current state (trying to divide count by total), it always returns a zero (no decimal values).

If I change that section to : (count(*)*100/ b.total*100)/100, I get integer percentages: no decimals (this is a problem because some records round off to zero). I'm pretty sure this is the entire problem (why I'm getting zeros as written below), but I don't have a clue how to fix it. Is this some kind of server setting that allows the query to only return decimal values or something?

select a.department, a.cycle, count(*)/ b.total percentage
from inventory a join (select department, count(*) total from inventory
where location not like 'bas%' and archived = 0 and quality_code = 'p'
group by department) b on a.department = b.department
where a.archived = 0 and a.quality_code = 'p' and location not like 'bas%'
group by a.department, a.cycle, b.total
order by a.department, a.cycle

How To Prevent Column Name From Being Displayed/returned From A Query

In a query in Management Studio, I want to output data to a text file (via Results in text button) without column names and hyphens or dashes, I have searched all SET commands with bad luck because SET FMTONLY OFF do exactly the opposite.

I know this could be a silly question because I have received suggestions in other ways to do that, but I am intrigued If there is a way to prevent column name from being displayed/returned from a query.

How To Show SUBREPORT When No Data Is Returned.

I have a subreport within the details section of my main report. This is enclosed by a single group. When I preview the subreport alone, it diplays the subreport correctly with no data (meaning it still displays the header and footer without a detail section). When the subreport is run within the main report and no subreport data is returned the subreport does not show.

Based on other threads I understand that the default functionality is to display headers and footers when no data is returned. This appears accurate except on a subreport.

The preview shows all the columns and data, but somehow no columns are returned....so when I try to link this data source to a copy column task, I get an error saying the source does not have any columns...any idea why this could be happening. Can We Hide A Column If No Data Is Returned?

Feb 7, 2008

Hi All,

Is there a way to hide a column if there is no data for that column? Suppose that I have a SP (lets call it wrapper) which will call multiple SP's. But for any one run, there'll be only one SP which is called. But the columns returned by these SP's is obviously different. So, in order to accomodate the output, can I create a table, add all the possible columns to it, and set the properties of the individual columns such that they will be hidden if there is no data in them? Example, SP 1 returns - ServerName, Location, OS ; SP 2 returns ServerName and location only. Now if the wrapper SP calls only the second SP (SP 2) can I configure in such a way that the third column (OS) is not displayed at all? (In normal cases, it would appear but without any data in it)...

Hope the question is clear... Thanks a lot..

Visual Formatting Of Data Returned From A SAP Database

Apr 3, 2014

I am working with extracting data from a SAP database, and I would like to perform some 'visual formatting' on the returned data. Because the SQL code that I am writing will be used in a custom Report it is not possible for me to use '3rd Party' formatting tools. Furthermore because the database is hosted on an MS SQL 2008 R2 RDBMS it is not possible to use the IIF() function.

Here is a sample of the data that I am getting back at the moment. URL...Here is how I would like the data to be returned (with the exception that the blue lines will ideally be blank cells). URL...

I have come to believe that I should be using the ROW_NUMBER() function, along with the OVER() function and possibly the 'partition by' keywords.Here is my original code -

Code:
select
td.ItemCode as 'Item Code'
, td.Dscription as 'Item Description', td.Quantity as 'Order Qty'
, titm.OnOrder as 'PO Qty'
, th.CardCode as 'BP Code', th.CardName as 'BP Name'
, th.DocNum as 'Sales Order Number'
, tsp.SlpName as 'Sales Person'
, twhs.WhsCode as 'Whs Code'
, isnull(tbloc.BINLABEL, '') as 'BIN Label', isnull(cast(tbloc.QUANTITY as nvarchar(20)), '') as 'BIN Qty'

code]...

Notice above that I only see the 'Seq' and no other data. How can I go about modifying this code so that I see all of the data columns I desire? If I further 'refine' the above, by adding case statements and the individual columns that I want to see (as opposed to using the * wildcard) I get a long list of error messages.

<?xml version="1.0" standalone="yes"?>
<BackupDataSet xmlns="http://tempuri.org/BackupDataSet.xsd">
<Device>
<DeviceID>6356452a-e7a6-42e1-895a-d4ade62210d5</DeviceID>
<UserID>1533c44f-c263-db11-9db3-000e9bd9f98d</UserID>
</Device>
</BackupDataSet>

When I set the SecondOperand to /* the output is a concatenated text string of DeviceID and UserID values. I'm trying to get just the DeviceID but perhaps my understanding of XPath syntax is wrong. I've tried setting the SecondOperand to the following:

//Device/DeviceID
/BackupDataSet/Device/DeviceID
//DeviceID

All of these return no results. What am I doing wrong?

Regards,

Greg

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Union Of Two Tables Returned Back To Main Query

Aug 18, 2014

Currently I have a standard query with a join to several tables. There are two additional tables MAS_CTB and MAS_STB. I would like to do a union between those two tables to get FIELDVALUE which will exist in either the CTB table or the STB table and then have that value be returned with the results of the original query.

I can of course write a UNION from the main query to the CTB and then to the STB table, however it's about 80 dummy fields I would have to replicate in the union which is why I was wondering if there was a more simple way.

Main Query:
SELECT Field1, Field2...Field80
From Table1
Join Table2

Union Portion:
Select FieldValue <------
From MAS_CTB
UNION
Select FieldValue <-----Return to main query above
From MAS_STB
