Data Type To Store A Version Number In A Table

May 8, 2012

I have a C# app linked to a SQL db and I need to store it's version number in a table (could be something like 1.2.789) but I cannot find any datatype which allows me to do this.

I could create three fields in the table for each number but I don't want to.

Data Type To Store Time

Hi all ,

What datatype should I take to store time in a table -- datetime , float or decimal?

my requirement is to store "Worked Hours in a day by an employee" in the field say, 9 hrs and 30 mins.

I should be able to manipulate data in this field such as total hours present in the month, extra hours worked in a day (considering 9 hrs as standard time),less hours worked in a day, and so on

In What Sql Server Data Type Would You Store Security Ids?

Nov 5, 2007

security ids seem to be made up of at least 3 32 bit unsigned numbers and a few smaller numbers. We believe their lengths vary. We dont mind dropping the "S" from the front. What data type do you recommend be used for their storage? We expect only limited joins and user visibility on this column. We may wish to create an index on this column. We think varchar and varbinary are the two major choices.

After Restoring MASTER Database, Can't Start SQLServer Service: Configuration Block Version 0 Is Not A Valid Version Number

Jul 16, 2007

Now, I checked and verified that my backup version of SQL Server is the same as the version installed on the computer I'm restoring too.

I have SQL Server on a production machine that I backed up and want to test a full restore on a dev machine to make sure it will work when I need it to.

Now that I've run the restore command on my tape backup and go to restart the SQL server service I receive:

Configuration block version 0 is not a valid version number. SQL Server is exiting. Restore the master database or reinstall.

I'm afraid I don't understand why this is happening. If the builds are the same, then shouldn't restoring the MASTER database have worked normally and I'd be able to restart the service now?

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Mar 12, 2008

I created a .net console application within which I connect to a sql server (not local) as follows,

string conn_str = "Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;Initial Catalog=QuantEquitySql;Data Source=server name";

SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(conn_str);

conn.Open();
.
Everything works fine when I run it from my computer. When I try to run it from a network share I get the following error,

Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.

I am using Visual Studio 2005 and .Net framwork v2.0.50727.

Does anybody know a fix to this problem?

If so then I'll have to consider using the Image datatype approach next time I have to do something like storing1 to thousands of selections.Thank you

XML Source Produces DT_UI8 Key Columns - Which SQL Server Data Type To Store?

Aug 12, 2007

I'm using the XML Source to process a hierarchical set of XML. As such, the XML Source creates keys to maintain the hierarchy. This is very convenient, and keeps me from having to invent my own keys.

The problem is that the datatype of these keys defaults to DT_UI8. Which SQL Server 2005 datatype should I use to store these values in my staging tables? BIGINT corresponds to DT_I8, which can't accept DT_UI8 values.

Contact Form - Variable Number Of Input Fields, Store Data As Xml String ?

Jul 13, 2007

Im trying to determine the best way to store data gathered from a form that a user will fill out online.  The form is dynamic and is customized at run time based on group-specific criteria.  The end result is a form that might have 3 extra text boxes, 2 extra sets of radio buttons and a freeform textbox, whereas for another group, there might be a slightly different set of input fields.   Now comes the issue of storing this data.  Since the fields can be somewhat dynamic, it could get tricky to define table columns for each possible input field.  So Im considering storing the data as xml.  Has anyone else had to build custom forms and ended up storing the data as xml ?

How Do I Make The Field A Number Data Type?

Hi there!
I'm using a Switch statement in my SQL as follows:

Code:

SELECT symbol,
Switch(timestamp Is Null,Null,
timestamp <= 005959, 0,
timestamp<=235959,23) AS period
INTO averageprice
FROM stocktrades;

Now here's my problem. The Data Type stored in the 'period' field of this new table I've created, dubbed averageprice, is a Text field and I want it to be a Number field. I've tried my best to figure this out and I'm still looking so any helpful hints or solution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Version Management For Table Data

Oct 12, 2007

Hi,

for my application, I need to be able to store past, current and pending versions for each row for some tables for the purpose of auditing and reporting. here is the scenario. the data from one or more tables is displayed on the screen. user makes few changes and submits the changes. the changes will not be updated in database immediately. instead the changes are sent for approval. during the workflow process, the changes need to be stored in pending state and only when the changes are approved, they need to updated to the live data and before updating the live data, old data needs to be stored somewhere for audit trail and reporting. what are the ways in which this can be modelled? should I have three separate tables one to store pending, one to store current and one to store historical version? or should I merge everything into one single table and have a version indicator in it? in this application changes span across multiple tables. in this case how to implement versioning? should each table take care of its own versioning? user can search for pending/current/historical data from the screen by providing various search criteria and the data may come from one or more tables related to each other. Is there a standard approach to deal with this kind of scenario?

Thanks,
RK

SQL 2012 :: Constantly Growing Version Store

Jul 7, 2015

We have an issue with the Version Store growing constantly. According to sys.dm_os_performance_counters, "Version Generation rate (KB/s)" is growing, but "Version Cleanup rate (KB/s)" isn't. We use read-committed snapshot isolation

While dbcc opentran and sys.dm_exec_requests don't show any long running transactions, I wrote a query looking at sys.dm_tran_ active_snapshot_ database_transactions. This shows a number of long running transactions but, according to sys.dm_exec_sessions, they are all sleeping. The transactions that are running come and go very quickly, as I would expect.Could these sleeping transactions be responsible for preventing the version store from cleaning up?

Produce Data -&&> Store In Table?

Sep 4, 2007

Hi!

I'm quite new to T-SQL and is about to build a small reporting db using SQL.
Most of the data I can move with normal INSERT INTO ... SELECT, but there are some tables that I want to
produce using T-SQL. For example I want to build a Date table like..

Date
Year
Quarter
Month
WeekDay
...

With some precalculated values for each date.

I've searched the forum but have not found any information on how to produce table contents in a good manner. I would appreciate if someone would have the time to point me in the right direction. I do not want to do this by code in my application.

My first thought is to use some kind of Insert Cursor in a While loop...

Pseudo:
---------------------
declare cursor ex for 'Insert table ... '

while
begin

(produce data)
insert data
end

close cursor
---------------------

While browsing the net I've got the feeling that you use cursor less in SQL Server than in other db-engines...

Have a nice day!

Exported Flat File Data Will Not Import To Same Table Without Extensive Data-type Manipulation

Jul 13, 2007

I'm moving data between identical tables and have to use a flat file as an intermediary. I thought: "No problem, SSIS can do a quick export to a file, then move the file to another server, then use SSIS to import the data to the new server."

Seems simple, right?

I'm hitting all sorts of surprising data conversion errors. I used the export wizard to create the export package. This works fine. However using the same flat file definition, the import package fails -- even when I have no destination. That is I have just one data flow task that contains only one control: the Flat File source. When I run the package the flat file definition fails with data type conversion and truncation errors. One of the obvious errors is for boolean types. The SQL field is a bit, SSIS defined the column as DT_BOOL, the output of the data are literal text values "TRUE" and "FALSE". So SSIS converts a sql datatype of bit to "TRUE" and "FALSE" on export, but can't make the reverse conversion on import?

Does anyone else find this surprising? I would expect that what SSIS exports, it can import given all the same table and flat file definitions. Is SSIS the wrong tool to do such simple bulk copies? I'd like to avoid using BCP because this process will need to run automatically within SQL Agent so we can leverage all the error tracking and system monitoring.

What Data Type To Save GPS Coordinates In A Data Table.

Sep 20, 2006

I am working on a program in VB 2005 in which i want to store and retrieve GPS coordinates. I am not sure which data type is the best to use to enter Latitude & Longitude numbers and maintain their proper integrity.

Like LAT ( N38 28.025' ) and LONG (W105 52.098' )

The numbers will be entered by the user and that format can be maintained, but how to re-enter & or insert them into the database using the same format is my real question.

I hope I have explained this right. The numbers in BOLD are what I need to maintain.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Using A Match Table To Store Multiple Columns For Parent Data

Mar 1, 2008

Sorry for the confusing subject. Here's what im doing:I have a table of products. Products have N categories andsubcategories. Right now its 4. But there could be more down theline so it needs to be extensible.So ive created a product table. Then a category table that has manycategories of products, of which a product can belong to N number ofthese categories. Finally a ProductCategory "match" table.This is pretty straigth forward. But im getting confused as to how towrite views/sprocs to pull out rows of products that list all theproducts categories as columns in a single query view.For example:lets say productId 1 is Cap'n Crunch cereal. It is in 3 categories:Cereal, Food for Kids, Crunchy food, and Boxed.So we have:Product----------------1 Capn CrunchCategories-----------------1 Cereal2 Food for Kids3 Crunchy food4 BoxedProductCategories------------------1 11 21 31 4How do I go about writing a query that returns a single result set fora view or data set (for use in a GridView control) where I would havethe following result:Product results---------------------------------ProductId ProductName Category 1 Category 2Category 3 Category N ...------------------------------------------------------------------------1 Capn Crunch Cereal Food for Kids Crunchy foodBoxedAm I just thinking about this all wrong? Sure seems like it.Cheers,Will
