DataReader Output Skipping First Line

Jan 20, 2007

I am using the following code to query a DB and output an Excel Spreadsheet.  For some reason, the first line is always missing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1 reader = cmd.ExecuteReader()
2 If Not reader.Read() Then
3 Return False
4 Else
5 For i = 0 To reader.FieldCount - 1
6 strLine += reader.GetName(i).ToString & Chr(9)
7 Next
8 objStreamWriter.WriteLine(strLine)
9 strLine = ""
10 With reader
11 While .Read
12 For x = 0 To .FieldCount - 1
13 strLine = strLine & reader.GetValue(x) & Chr(9)

ADO Skipping First Line In Text Data File

Dec 18, 2007

Hello,

Using ADO to conect to a text format data file to gather data.
File is a .dat file, tab delimited, no header row.

Got all my ducks in a row:
1) Write a schema.ini
2) Make sure the extension is not excluded in the Jet Text registry key
3) Setup the connection properly (per MSDN Scripting help)

Works nicely, except the fist line of data is missing. File contains 78 rows of data, Jet is skipping the first line every time and reporting 77 rows.

Notes:
1) Adding a blank row, as suggested in this forum, is not an option - the data files are machine generated are not to be altered by other processes.
2) I could do it the old fashion way of importing and splitting into arrays, but this is a database function and ADO should be able to handle it.

Code samples:

Code Block

adoCON.Open "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" & sPath & ";Extended Properties=""text;HDR=NO;FMT=Delimited;"";"
On Error Resume Next
rsSrc.Open "Select * From " & sFile, adoCON, adOpenStatic, adLockOptimistic, adCmdText
sPath is a string containing the path, including the trailing
sFile is a string containing the file name.

Any ideas?

Datareader Wont Read First Line Of DB

Oct 17, 2007

hi there, i have some code which cycles through my table in my DB and fills some textboxes. For some reason if there are 5 lines it will only get 4, yet strangly i used the code somewhere else for the same kind of thing and it reads all the lines, and anyone help?int a = 0;int b = 0;

//This is the sql statement.
string sqlMultiL = "SELECT * FROM tbl_stock_part_multi_location WHERE stock_ID =" + Convert.ToInt32(Request.QueryString["qsStockID"]);// + ") AND EXISTS (SELECT * FROM tbl_stock_part_multi_location WHERE stock_ID =" + Convert.ToInt32(Request.QueryString["qsStockID"]) + ")";
//This creates a sql command which executes the sql statement.SqlCommand sqlCmdMultiL = new SqlCommand(sqlMultiL, myConnMultiL);
myConnMultiL.Open();
SqlDataReader drMultiL = sqlCmdMultiL.ExecuteReader();
//This reads the first result from the sqlReaderwhile (drMultiL.Read())
{
try
{
 ((TextBox)Panel2.FindControl("txtDesc_L" + a.ToString())).Text = Convert.ToString(drMultiL["description"]);
 for (b = 1; b <= 5; b++)
{((TextBox)Panel2.FindControl("txtQty" + b.ToString() + "_L" + a.ToString())).Text = Convert.ToString(drMultiL["qty" + b.ToString()]);

} // end of for b loop

} catch (Exception exMultiL)
{lblError.Text = lblError + Convert.ToString(exMultiL);
}
//increase the counter

a++;

// you can add a break if you only want 5 rows returned:if (a >= 5) break;
}

also i dont know if anyone could answer this is if the value in my DB is not = to one in the DDL how can i handle that so it dosnt throw an error and cause my code to stop?
Thanks in advance

DataReader Output Column Length

Jan 19, 2007

Hello,

I have an ODBC connection manager to a Progress database. In that database there is a column declared as a string of 10 characters long.
However, some data in this column is actually up to 15 characters long.
This makes my DataReader Source fail everytime I try to run my package because it sets the output column like this :

Datatype : Unicode string [DT_WSTR]
Length : 10

Is there any way to solve this without changing the datatype in the Progress database (that is beyond my control) ?

tanks in advance ...

DataReader Source Error - Cannot Change The Datatype, Precision Or Scale In The Output Columns

Oct 3, 2007

I have a data source that I access via odbc in a DataReader Source component in SSIS. I can access the data fine. However, I am having problems with certain fields that are numeric (specifically home prices ranging from 100,000.00 to 99,999,999.00). In the advanced editor for my data reader source under the input and output properties tab, in data reader output under the external columns and output columns, these fields for some reason default to numeric data types with a precision of 4 and a scale of zero, not large enough to hold the data that is coming in. This causes errors that make the data come in as null (after i specify to ignore the errors).

I can change the precision and scale to 18 and 4 in the external columns, but when I try to change the datatype, precision or scale in the output columns I get the following message:

Property Value is not valid.

The details are:

Error at Import DataReader Source: The data type of output columns on the component "DataReader Source" cannot be changed.
Error at DataReader Source: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0xC020837D)

Output Parameter Or 1 Line Recordset?

Feb 8, 2004

I was nosing around the documentation of the IBuySpy store and noticed this line:

---------------------------------------------------------

This stored procedure accepts a ProductID as an input parameter and returns product information to the caller in the form of output parameters. A one line recordset is not used in order to gain a performance increase. It is used primarily on the product details screen.

----------------------------------------------------------

Can anyone shed some light on if this is a best practice when retrieving a single row from the db? Is the performance gain very noticable? I mean it makes sense and all, I just see a lot of examples using a datareader when there is more than 1 column, and ExecuteScalar() when there is one.

I just wrote an application that might benefit from this if its worth the trouble of changing a couple methods in my data layer calls to ouput parameters.

Thanks in advance for any input!

Command Line Parameters Are Invalid Is The Output For A SQL Job To Run SSIS Package

May 25, 2006

Hello,

I created a SSIS package that has a flat file manager whose connection string is a package variable, the reason is that there is a foreachfile container loop to loop thru CSV format files in a directory and load them to a sql table.

The package execution is working in the designer studio as well as in the management studio-- a copy was saved to a sql 2005 server where a sql job is deployed to run the package. However when I ran the job, it claims successful but doesn€™t do anything in reality. If I checked the box failing the package upon validation warming, the job will fail with the error: the command line parameters are invalid. The command line looks like below:

/SQL "Package" /SERVER FTLQSQL03 /WARNASERROR /MAXCONCURRENT " -1 " /CHECKPOINTING OFF

One thing that I think maybe wrong is on the data source tab of the job step GUI, the flat file manager€™s connection string is blank, compared to other connection managers having related values.

Does anyone know how to make the job working?

Thanks in advance

Output To Fixed Width Flat File Not Adding Line Breaks

May 19, 2008

Hi All,

I have a simple SSIS package that runs a query on the db and outputs a fixed width flat file. I have all my column widths defined and in the connection manager i can preview the output. Everything looks great. All the fields fall where they should and each record is on it's own line.

When i run the SSIS program and then go open my text file with a text editor the ouput is all on the same line. I have tried changing my file format from fixed width to ragging right and adding a row delimiter but that doesn't work either. I feel like i'm missing something small here. It could even be an issue w/ my text editor (although i've tried to open the text file in multiple editors). In the flat file connection manager I have my file defined to be 187 characters long, So figure every 187 characters it should output a new line (it should add the carraige return right?).

Has anyone encountered an issue like this?

Any help would be much appreciated.

SQL Server 2012 :: Using Unions To Write Out Each Select Query As Distinct Line In Output

Aug 20, 2015

Basically I'm running a number of selects, using unions to write out each select query as a distinct line in the output. Each line needs to be multiplied by -1 in order to create an offset balance (yes this is balance sheet related stuff) for each line. Each select will have a different piece of criteria.

Although I have it working, I'm thinking there's a much better or cleaner way to do it (I use the word better loosely)

Example:
SELECT 'Asset', 'House', TotalPrice * -1
FROM Accounts
WHERE AvgAmount > 0
UNION
SELECT 'Balance', 'Cover', TotalPrice
FROM Accounts
WHERE AvgAmount > 0

What gets messy here is having to write a similar set of queries where the amount is < 0 or = 0

I'm thinking something along the lines of building a table function contains all the descriptive text returning the relative values based on the AvgAmount I pass to it.

Why Skipping Identity Numbers

Has this happened to anyone else? Where do I start looking for possible causes

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Skipping Group With FOR XML Path

May 18, 2015

I have a table with a text field and a grouping number.

1, A
1, B
1, C
1, D
1, E

2, A
2, C
2, D
2, E

3, A
3, B
3, C
3, F

4, A
4, B
4, D
4, F
4, G

I assemble the text fields into strings by group, using the FOR XML PATH('') function, so that I end up with

1, A-B-C-D-E
2, A-C-D-E
3, A-B-C-F
4, A-B-D-F-G

This all works fine. I now have a requirement to leave out some groups, based on whether the GROUP does or does not contain a certain text. For instance, if I want only GROUPS with 'E', my result set should be

1, A-B-C-D-E
2, A-C-D-E

If I want only those GROUPS that DO NOT have 'E', my result set should be

3, A-B-C-F
4, A-B-D-F-G

I can (and have) put a condition on the assembled string, but it seems to me that it should be possible to make the cut earlier. That is, rather than assembling the string, scanning it with a Like '%E%' condition and discarding what doesn't meet my needs, I would like to stop scanning the incoming GROUP as soon as a mismatch is detected.

If I want all groups that will not contain an 'A', for instance, it is pointless for the query engine to read in 'A', 'B', 'C', 'D', 'E', put them all together into a string, compare it with a wildcard and throw it away. As soon as it sees the 'A', it has enough information to completely skip over the rest of that group. The abbreviated examples here are trivial, but the real code is not.

All I've been able to dream up so far results in skipping the RECORD that contains the 'A', but not the entire group.

Skipping Record In Transactional Replication

How do you skip just one record in transactional replication when you have an error?

I know we can add the -skiperror flag to the distribution agent to skip all errors (for a particular error number). But if we do that, can we get detailed information on every record that was skipped?

My goal is to be able to identify every row that cannot be replicated and has to be skipped.

Thanks!

MERGE Statement - Skipping Locked Records

Aug 27, 2012

skip locked records in a MERGE statement and output the list of skipped records.

Through the documentation, internet posts and testing, I believe it is NOT possible. MERGE acts like a single atomic DML statement, and therefore cannot avoid locked records.

I can use the READPAST hint, which will skip the row-locked records. However, it could actually insert duplicate keys in certain cases (as it is ignoring records, i would guess), which would not be acceptable.

Skipping Transactions In SQL Server Transaction Replication

Jun 14, 2007

I'm trying to create a transaction replication from SQL Server 2000 to 2005. Basic replication between the servers works just fine. However, what I want to accomplish is to be able to skip some of the transactions. Example - from time to time we want to purge some of the historical data from the main database (the publisher). We don't want the same purging to occur on the destination database, which will be used for reporting purposes and needs to include all the historical information. I wanted to simply stop the replication log reader, purge the records, backup the transaction log with truncation and then restart the reader. The only problem - the truncation on the replicated database keeps the transactions of the purging until they are replicated, so the transaction log backup doesn't help. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Flat File Connection Is Skipping Columns

Jan 25, 2007

The data file contains column names in the first row. Excel imports the file correctly. I can see the tabs in UltraEdit32. But...the flat file connection just skips over a column.
In the preview window, it appears to skip the column entirely.

However, when the data is imported, data from the non recognized column goes into a column that is mapped to receive data from another column shifting the data in to the next column.

I am using the CopyColumn and the SQL Destination controls.

Any ideas on how to make this work?

Thanks,

I ran the code manually on isql and could not replicate the error, however when re-compiled on stored procedure it fails misserably.
when is Microsoft going to release a service pack that actually works?

Did you know that Executive does not recognize 2000 as a leap year?

If anybody has any suggestions on this problem, besides the obvious (using a real table) please write back

Error: 0xC0047038 at Data Flow Task, SSIS.Pipeline: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_PRIMEOUTPUTFAILED.

The PrimeOutput method on Flat File Source returned error code 0xC0202091. The component returned a failure code when the pipeline engine called PrimeOutput(). The meaning of the failure code is defined by the component, but the error is fatal and the pipeline stopped executing. There may be error messages posted before this with more information about the failure.

I've tried multiple things to resolve this.. Changing the OutputColumnWidth in the flat file connection manager, checking the file for any irregularites in notepad++ (each line ends as it should with CRLF), the file is encoded in UTF-8 without BOM .
