Hello,

Relations between a File / Folder and Comments / Ratings / View / Tags / Categories are done using FilesRatings, FoldersViews, etc.

I am using UniqueIdentifier as Primary Keys.
I checked ASP.NET Membership tables, a few articles and few features in my project, such as renaming files with the GUID of their records.
I didn't decided yet for INT or UNIQUEIDENTIFIER.

I am looking for some feedback on the design of my database.
One thing I need to improve is mentioned in (1)

Thank You,
Miguel

DB Design Advice

Jan 12, 2007

I'm creating a DB to track clients, programs, and client participation in the programs. They are service programs. A client can be in more than one program and a program can have more than one client.
Can someone give me an example of how they would layout the tables?
My guess is:
tblClient, ClientID
tblClientProgramLog, ProLogID, ClientID
tblProgramDetails, ProDetailID, ProLogID
tblPrograms, ProgramID, ProDetailID
I appreciate any suggestions,

Design Advice

Jul 9, 2004

I'm trying to design a database that handles Clients, Cases, Individual and Group Sessions. My problem is that a client can have individual sessions and belong to more than one group at the same time, so I have a many-to-many relationship to deal with. Also I'm trying to design it so that I can have a form that when a group is selected from a drop down it shows all clients assigned to that group and will let me enter new session data for them.

Just looking for some advice on how to handle the relationships.
Maybe someone could show me how they see the relationships working.

My take is that the session is linked to the case not the client, I could be thinking incorrectly?

Thank you,

tblClient
tblClientCase
tblCaseSessionLog
tblClientCaseGroupLink
tblGroups

Design Advice?

Jun 3, 2004

I have an construction estimation system, and I want to develop a project management system. I will be using the same database because there are shared tables. My question is this, critical data tables are considered tables with dollar values and these tables should not be shared across the whole company. I do however need information from these tables, such as product and quantity of the product for a given project. When an estimate becomes a project it is assigned a project number. At this point I thought of Copying the required data from the estimate side to the project side. This would result in duplicate data in a sence but the tables will be referenced from two standalone front end applications. Should I copy the data from one table to another, or create new "views" to the estimate tables for the project management portion.

What would be the best solution to this problem? I find in some circumstances, a new table is required because additional data will be saved on the "Project Management" side, but not in all cases.

Design Advice - Need ASAP

Nov 27, 2007

Hello Everyone. Im sorry for this urgent post, but have critical issue that needs a solution quick. So for my issue. I am adjusting our sales order tables to handle a couple different scenarios. Currently we have 2 tables for sales orders

SALESORDERS
------------
SORDERNBR int PK,
{ Addtl Header Columns... }

SALESORDERDETAILS
-------------------
SODETAILID int,
SORDERNBR int FK,
PN varchar,
SN varchar(25),
{ Addtl Detail Columns ... }

Currently the sales order line item is serial number specific. I need to change the tables to be able to handle different requests like :

Line Item Request ( PN, QTY )
Line Item Request ( SN )
Line Item Request ( PN, GRADE, QTY )
ETC.

I am thinking i need to create a new table to hold the specifics for a particular line item. Maybe like this :

SALESORDERSPECS
----------------
SOSPECID int,
SODETAILID int FK,
SPECTYPE varchar, IE : SN, PN, GRADE. { one value per row }
SPECVALUE varchar IE : GRADE A

Im thinking i would need to rename the SALESORDERDETAILS table to SALESORDERITEMS. SALESORDERITEMS would just contain header info like
SalePrice,
Warranty,
Etc...

Then rename SALESORDERSPECS to SALESORDERDETAILS...

Anyone understand what im trying to do? If you need more info please ask. You can also get a hold of me through IM.

Thanks!

Your Professional Advice Please - Design

May 18, 2006

Hi All, I have read MANY posts on how to track changes to data overtimeIt appears there are two points of view1. Each record supports a Change Indicator flag toindicate the current record(would this be EVERY table?)2. Each table is duplicated as an archive table andtriggers are used to update archiveCan someone give me some guidance based on REAL world experiencewhich works best for them?My scenario - I have insurance policies and must track history aspolicies are updated by customer service reps.Imagine many tables Policy>LifePol>LifePolRiders[color=blue]>AccidentPol >etc...>DIPol>DIPolRiders[/color]To me the archive table scenario does not seem scalable at all....someguidance on design would be aprreciated...Thanks!!!

Design/Optimization Advice?

Oct 22, 2007

Hi all-

I have a schema that is mostly working, but I was wondering if some of you with more experience than I might give me some constructive criticism on my methodology.

Basically, I have a single table that stores data for many records. Each record has a variable number of fields, each of which can be a different data type. Later, queries will pull filtered subsets of data from the table, and do calculations on specific fields. In my implementation, the fields for a record are bound together by the datagroup (uniqueidentifier) column in the LotsOData table, the field name is defined by the dataname column, and the field value is stored in the datavalue column, which is type sql_variant.

One problem I had, and I'm not able to reliably replicate, is that the more complicated queries sometimes raise casting errors on the sql_variant column, even when the data is absolutely correct. I've been able to avoid this case by pre-selecting some of the subqueries into temporary tables first, then joining on the temp tables in the main query, but that seems horribly inefficient.

I've included a sample table, data, and query to demonstrate my basic solution. I was wondering if anybody could provide some insight on a better way of designing a solution for this scenario.

Thanks!
-Eric.

PS: bonus points if you have any insight at all on the casting error I mentioned!!

Design Advice For Report Architecture

Jan 24, 2008

Any design suggestions for the best way to architect this report using SQL Reporting Services 2005 are appreciated!

My website features a catalog of roughly 50,000 items, each of which may be appear in a list of search results or in a detailed view. There are counters on the pages that update totals for such appearances and track other item-specific information in several tables in a SQL database. The catalog of items changes frequently, so the list of item IDs is never exactly the same from month to month.

I've been asked to produce a monthly report of this data for each of the items in the catalog, with reports for the current and previous months (for many years) accessible at all times. Some -- but not all -- items are useful for one purpose or another and so can be considered as belonging to a group of items. Although I have not yet been asked to create a report that aggregates the values for all Group members into a single report for that Group, I can clearly see it would be valuable and will be requested soon.

To ensure the report captures the data for an entire month, it must be run at the very end of each month. That means I will need to run the report using a Schedule that kicks off the process at 12:01am every 1st of the month. The report must be processed and stored for later retrieval and rendering on demand.

Considering the number of items and the indefinite length of time the report data must be retained, my question is really what's the best way to set all this up?

Should I create a report for each item separately? That would mean the scheduled task would have to somehow discover the current list of item IDs (which is available via query from the database) and create and process (but not render) a report for each (passing the item ID as a report parameter?), adding it to the report history. Although each report would be small take only a short time to run, overall that seems like it would take a long time to run and create a huge number of reports to store each month.

Or should I create a single 'master' report that contains all the data for every item for the month, and then use the item ID as a filter on the data when it is rendered? While that means only one report is created each month and added to the history, it would be a much larger report and take much longer to run (with more potential for timeouts and errors to scuttle the whole report). It also means all the data for the entire report has to be loaded every time the report is rendered, even though only 1/50,000 of the data (the data for 1 of the 50,000 items) will actually be viewed with any given rendering. But that would seem overly cumbersome, slow, and wastefully band-width intensive.

Any alternatives, suggestions, considerations, etc. -- all welcome!

Thanks

Advice On Table Design Which Will Allow Me To Enforce Integrity

Jul 23, 2005

Hi,I have two tables Table A and B, below with some dummy data...Table A (contains specific unique settings that can be requested)Id, SettingName1, weight2, lengthTable B (contains the setting values, here 3 values relate to weightand 1 to length)Id, Brand, SettingValue1, A, 1001, B, 2001, null, 3002, null, 5.3(There is also a list of Brands available in another table). No primarykeys / referential integrity has been setup yet.Basically depending upon the Brand requested a different setting valuewill be present. If a particular brand is not present (signified by anull in the Brand column in table B), then a default value will beused. Therefore if I request the weight and pass through a Brand of A, I willget 100If I request the weight but do not pass through a brand (i.e. null) Iwill get 300.My question is, what kind of integrity can I apply to avoid the userspecifying duplicate Ids and Brands in table B. I cannot apply acomposite key on these two fields as a null is present. Table B willprobably contain about 50 rows and probably 10 of them will be brandspecific. The reason its done like this is in the calling client code Iwant to call some function e.g.getsetting(weight) .... result = 300Or if it is brand specificgetsetting(weight,A) ..... result = 100Any advice on integrity or table restructuring would be greatlyappreciated. Its sql 2000 sp3.Thanksbrad

Large Volumes Of Varchar Data - Design Advice

Jul 6, 2006

Hello all,

I have recently been task with rewriting a database that holds large volumes of data, whilst ensuring that query can be run in optimal time. Having never really delved into this sort of thing before, I hoped you guys might be able to offer some advice and guidance.

The design I have inherited is based around 2 main tables:

[captured_traps]
[id] [int] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL
[snmp_version] [int] NULL
[community_name] [varchar] (255)
[packet_type] [varchar] (50)
[oid] [varchar] (500)
[source_ip] [varchar] (15)
[generic] [int] NULL
[specific] [int] NULL
[time_stamp] [varchar] (15)
[trap_entered] [datetime] NULL
[status] [int] NULL

[captured_varbinds]
[id] [int] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL
[captured_trap_id] [int] NOT NULL
[varbind_oid] [varchar] (500)
[varbind_text] [varchar (500)

The relationship between the two tables is on the "captured_traps (id)" to "captured_varbinds (captured_trap_id)". Currently the "captured_traps" table contains around 350 million rows, the "captured_varbinds" table contains around 900 million rows.

Now as you can probably gather this model runs like a....well it sort of hobbles more than runs hence the need to redesign.

My current thoughts on this are:

- Normalising all varchars - there is alot of duplicate values in most of the varchar fields.
- Full Text Indexing

However beyond that I am not sure which route to go down. After googling for most of today I have come across a number of "solutions" however I do not want to go steaming down the track of one of these to discover that it is fatally flawed somewhere.

Database Design/query Design

Feb 13, 2002

Ok, I'm doing a football database for fixtures and stuff. The problem I am having is that in a fixture, there is both a home, and an away team. The tables as a result are something like this:

-------
Fixture
-------
fix_id
fix_date
fix_played

----
Team
----
tem_id
tem_name

-----------
TeamFixture
-----------
fix_id
tem_id
homeorawayteam
goals

It's not exactly like that, but you get the point. The question is, can I do a fixture query which results in one record per fixture, showing both teams details. The first in a hometeam field and the second in an away team field.

Fixture contains the details about the fixture like date and fixture id and has it been played

Team contains team info like team id, name, associated graphic

TeamFixture is the table which links the fixture to it's home and away team.

TeamFixture exists to prevent a many to many type relationship.

Make sense? Sorry if this turns out to be really easy, just can't get my head around it at the mo!

Database Advice

Dec 8, 2007

Hi,I recently contacted my hosting company's customer support about my databases not working - saying that I use sql express (which they support). The guy recommended:
"I would suggest you to upgrade the db's to use mssql 2005." "This
is because, sql express is built for development environment. When you
are in development environment, you are accessing everything with
administrator permission. However, in live hosting environment (when
there are differnet kind of permission restrictions), sql express often
failed on attaching database." Does anyone have any opinion on that? Would it be best to change db's to use mssql 2005? How complicated/time consuming will it be to upgrade? Thanks!Jon

Advice On Database Structure

Jun 4, 2007

I am thinking of doing a fake PC company site for my ASP project. so
what they will have is a chat, products with reviews, and users can
have "Buddies".So my DB so far (Tables):ProductPC - ID, Processor, RAM, HDD, Graphics, LCD ...ProductHardware
- ID, Title (Like "Intel C2D E6600"), Description, Price, Rating (0-5
stars, so integer), Category (CPU, HDD, Graphics)ProductSoftware - ID, Title (eg. "Adobe CS3"), Description, Price, Rating, Category (eg. Design, Programming)Reviews - ID, ProductID, Title, Content, DateChat - ID, TopicID, Title, Content, DateUsers - ID, Username, Password,The problem, how do i connect Reviews to the products since they are from diff tables. How do i get the "buddy" system workingChat i think its not as simple as thatBut i just need a simple ASP project, so no need to get too complex, but i still hope to learn as much.

Advice On The Best Way To Update A Database

Jun 17, 2007

Hi,Apologies if this has already been asked, but I couldnt find a thread that asked exactly what I wanted.Im making an administration panel for a site where you can change various settings, options, and categories that data can fall into. When editing, adding or deleting a record i COULD make a trip to the database every time, but this feels very inefficient as I understand that establishing the connection is usually the biggest performance hit when querying a database. An alternative plan is for me to simply record the changes made in the panel and have a "save" button. When this is clicked, ONE database connection would be opened and all the data would be saved/updated/deleted as necessary. However, this would involve several "for" loops while the connection is open. The question is; which method would you recommend and why? And does having several "for" loops while the connection is open nullify the advantage gained by only opening one connection?Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thank you

Need Advice On Database Plan. Thank You.

Dec 16, 2005

Hello,I am working on a web site which will use SQL 2005.I am planing my first SQL database and I am looking for advice.1. There will be two types of users: students and professors.2. Both users types will have login information.   (Username, Password, AccessLevel)   3. The remaining information on students and professores is different.   Student (Name, Email, Phone, ...) / Professor (Name, Email, Phone, Subjects, ...)4. Professors can publish documents.   Each document has some info (Type, Title, Description, ...)My plan in this moment is to:A. Create the tables Students, Professors, Login and Documents.B. Students table would be connected to Login table.   Professors table would be connected to Login table and Documents table.C. The field [Type] in documents table should include the type or   should I create a table DocumentsTypes where I add codes for each type.   I have seen this. What is the advantage? Can someone give me some advice?Thank you Very Much,Miguel

Database Expansion Advice

Feb 13, 2008

I'm at a new installation where there's no DBA at all, so, as a Coldfusion programmer, I'm now the DBA, LOL.

The main SQL2000 DB we use is approximately 100MB with about 7MB of free space and is allocated to expand by 10%.

I am adding a new, large table, about 60 columns with lots of variable-length unicode fields, mostly nvarchar. It's being used to track non-USA user-form information. Even though the DB is set to expand, I'm concerned that due to the potential size/volume of records, that the auto-expand could cause performance issues.

The SQL2000 server has plenty of room, about 49GB, so I'm wondering if I should expand the size of the current DB, or if the auto-expand feature will be ok.

At this point I'm not sure what the volume of the user-form records will be in the new table. It won't be a million records certainly, but I'm guessing it could climb to maybe 10-20,000 records.

If I should expand the DB, can I do this while the DB is still online?

thanks...

Inheritance Advice In A Database...

Jul 20, 2005

hi folks,i'm puzzled over this one, anyone with some solid db experience might beable to enlighten me here.i'm modelling a file system in a database as follows, and i can't figure outto cleanly implement an inheritance mechanism.i have a hierarchy of folders in an sql table. every folder has aparentFolderID, if this value is 0 then it means it's a root folder.then, in a 'files' table, every file has a parentFolderID to give it alocation in the structure. fairly basic.the hard part is that each file record has an attribute 'STYLE' that can beexplicitly specified, or inherited from it's parent folder, or it's parentsparent folder, or.. all the way back to the root.the 2 ways i've come up with representing it are:1) if the style is being inherited, enter a null value in the STYLE field.then to figure out what style applies to a file or folder, i trace backthrough it's parentFolderID records until i find a style attribute that isnot null.the good thing about this is that if i change the style that is applied tothe entire filesystem, it only takes one update.the bad thing is when i want to figure out what style applies to a file, ihave to traverse back through possibly several records to locate the folderthat actually specifies the style being inherited by the file.2) explicitly state all style values in each record.this is good for accessing the style of a file or folder because you get itstraight out first time from the db.the bad thing is if i update the entire file system, i might have severalhundred / thousand update sql statements to execute to update all the valuesin every folder and every file. nasty!thanks for any help, i'm really stumped with this and i'm thinking theremust be a more elegant way to implement inheritance.thankstim

My application has two databases and 2 client interface. One with a windows forms having a database (sql server 2000) running in an office (on a static IP but on a slow connection). the second one is an web application running on the net with an online database. Both these databases have to have same information. Users can add records to both databases independently but these databases should be synchronize at a point. I hope the situation is cleare. Is there a standard way of doing this. If some one knows good article of how this can be done pls forward it to me.

Hi All Professionals Programmers,
I would like to ask a question that is very important for me. The question is how can i create a flexible data base in which i m able to create the inner levels as much as i can.
Like i have a table building, then i have another child table floor, then the floor become parent and i have its child rooms, then the rooms become parent and i have its child floor tiles etc.
you can see i am going to inner dept, so i need a flexible database because its very costly and intimadting to change the database and every time create a new table and relationships.
Hope you have understood what i am going to say and need advice of professional and expert user to resolve it.
Any concise quality material like articles, white paper etc will also be suitable for me.

Trying To Refine Database Structure - Advice?

May 22, 2008

Greetings,

Have an interesting issue in a database I'm trying to design and I'm trying to find a better way to setup the structure, if there is one. Going to generic example of my issue.

StudentList --- This table is the list of all College Students(with Primary Key of StudentID)
MajorsList --- This is a table listing all of the majors available at the College (PK of MajorID)
CourseList --- This is the list of all of the courses at the school (PK of ClassID)

This college allows students to take 1 or more majors, with the number of majors unknown.
-- Any number of students can take the same majors or different majors.
-- -- (aka 1 StudentID -> 1+ Majors & 1 Major -> 1+ StudentID's)
The majors all have different numbers of courses in them.
-- Many of the majors can have the same, or different courses in their lists.
-- -- (aka 1 Major -> 1+ Courses & 1 Course -> 1+ Majors)

I'm looking to see if their is a better way of tieing together the Students -> Majors and Majors -> Courses.
If done properlly, a single select and a few joins should bring up every class a student is taking for all their majors, or any other relationship to any of the three main tables primary keys.

Currently, to tie the three tables together, I have made two Interrum tables:
-- StudentMajors - - With only two columns
-- -- StudentID (ForeignKey tied to PrimaryKey StudentID in StudentList)
-- -- MajorID (FK tied to PrimaryKey MajorID in MajorList)
and
-- MajorCourses - - with only two columns

-- -- MajorID (FK tied to PrimaryKey MajorID in MajorList)
-- -- CourseID (FK tied to PrimaryKey CourseID in CourseList)

These tables give clear and definate ties between the tables, but my worry is that there is no primary key for these two tables, and no column in the tables is elledgeable for becoming PK, because, in this example the StudentMajors table can lis tthe studentID multiple times, each with a different MajorID. Sames goes with MajorCourses.

Is there a better structure method for reaching this same goal?

Additional, I don't know how to do a contraint that should be in place of:
-- In StudentMajors, for each value of studentID, there can be no duplicate values on MajorID
-- -- (same in MajorCourses tables in relations to classid's)
Any advice on how to do this constraint?

Designing A Database Within A Database... Design Question Storing Data...

Jul 23, 2005

I have a system that basically stores a database within a database (I'msure lots have you have done this before in some form or another). At the end of the day, I'm storing the actual data generically in acolumn of type nvarchar(4000), but I want to add support for unlimitedtext. I want to do this in a smart fashion. Right now I am leaningtowards putting 2 nullable Value fields:ValueLong ntext nullableValueShort nvarchar(4000) nullableand dynamically storing the info in one or the other depending on thesize. ASP.NET does this exact very thing in it's Session State model;look at the ASPStateTempSessions table. This table has both aSessionItemShort of type varbinary (7000) and a SessionItemLong of typeImage. My question is, is it better to user varbinary (7000) and Image? I'mthinking maybe I should go down this path, simply because ASP.NET does, but I don't really know why. Does anyone know what would be the benifitof using varbinary and Image datatypes? If it's just to allow saving ofbinary data, then I don't really need that right now (and I don't thinkASP.NET does either). Are there any other reasons?thanks, dave

Question-Advice Needed: Creating A System To Synch Handheld Entered Data With Main Database.

Jan 30, 2008

Greetings!

I would like to create a database for keeping track of payroll data for employees where the supervisors (job coaches) on our workshop floor can use a Pocket PC device to record the hourly employee data on the fly. Then at the end of the day, the supervisor can place the device in a cradle of some sort and synch the newly entered data into the main database.

I'm guessing that SQL Server Compact edition would be perfect for this type of task? Is that correct? Can someone give me recommendations on how to go about setting this up? What should I use as the main database? SQL Server? Access? Any advice is appreciated!

Database Design- Referencing Multiple Database

Sep 27, 2007

Hi All,
I am designing database where few of the master tables will reside in different database or in case different server. Scenario is
Server "A" with Database "A" may host the "Accounts" table.
Server "B" with Database "B" may host the "Product" table.
I am designing database "Project" which will hosted in Server "A".
My application requires this master tables [readonly access] as data inserted in my application refers this tables. Also there are reports to be generated which refer this tables.
How do i design my database and sql queries?
I am thinking of approach of having equivalent tables created in my database and writing service which keep tables in my database in sync. This will ensure good perfomance during transaction and reports as they will need to refer this table locally as opposed to different database or different server.

Any thoughts on above approach?? or any better/standard way for such scenarios ?

Thanks in Advance. Your inputs will be of great help.
