Database Design Selecting Multiple Different Child Tables

Sep 19, 2000

I want to have a linking table say for example we call this a claim. Based on the claim number you need to relate to one of say 6 different types of claims. The types of claims related to their own individual parent table. (individual because each type of claim tracks completely different information) does anyone have an idea on how to set this up?

Sample Structure

table = Claim
Field 1 = ClaimTypeA_ID
Field 2 = ClaimTypeB_ID
Field 3 = ClaimTypeC_ID
Field 4 = ClaimTypeD_ID
Field 5 = ClaimTypeE_ID
Field 6 = ClaimTypeF_ID

The six field relate to the 6 different tables ID.

If I do this how do I store the data? put 0's in each of the claim types that are not used???

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Design Question - Parent Child Tables && Identity Columns

Apr 17, 2007

I don't know if this is the right forum but...

In a parent/child table structure (order/orderdetail) I have used identity columns for the orderdetail or compund primary keys. I find a single identity column on the detail table easier to manage (with a fk to the parent) but what ends up bieng easiest for the user is to have an order (say #3456) and detail items listed sequentially from 1 to n. This reflects a compound key structure but generating the 2nd field is a pain. Is there any way to tie an identity field to the parent key so that it will generate this number for me automatically?

Selecting From Multiple Tables

Hi all.

I'm trying to select from multiple table in one select statement but i'm having problems. Here is the code i'm trying:

Selecting On Multiple Tables

Aug 13, 2006

Hi there,I'm new to sql and thus I'm having problems with a specific query which Ihope you guys can help me with.Basicly I have a few tables which I'm trying to do a query on:Table groups contains information about specific groups e.g. "Windows" or"Unix".Table users contains information about specific users e.g. "a", "b" or "c".Table users_groups contain information about group relationship (a user canbe in multiple groups) e.g. (a, Windows), (b, Unix), (a, Unix). In this case user c is ungrouped. Now I'd like to find the users which does belong to group Windows and thosewho do not:select distinct username from users_groups where groupname = "Windows" orderby username asc; This works pretty well for finding users in the specific group. In this casethe result is a.However I'd like to get the opposite result (b and c) but I'm stuck. The problem is that I'd like a list of all users excluding those which arein "Windows"Here is a partial query:select distinct users.username from users left join users_groups onusers.username = users_groups.username where users_groups.username is nullorder by users.username asc; This only gives me those users who are not grouped at all. This mean thatuser b is not in those results. Please advise. Thanks in advance.-- Henrik

Selecting From Multiple Tables Avoiding Duplicates

Sep 6, 2006

Hi

I currently have two tables called Book and JournalPaper, both of which have a column called Publisher. Currently the data in the Publisher column is the Publisher name that is entered straight into either table and has been duplicated in many cases. To tidy this up I have created a new table called Publisher where each entry will have a unique ID.

I now want to remove the Publisher columns from Book and JournalPaper, replace it with an ID foreign key column and move the Publisher name data into the Publisher table. Is there a way I can do this without duplicating the data as some publishers appear several times on both tables?

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated as my limited SQL is not up to this particular challenge!!!
Thanks!

DB Design: One Table Or Multiple Tables?

Dec 28, 2005

I am developing a Content management system of sorts and I want it
to be pretty flexible. I have noticed that with web content (News,
Articles, Events, FAQs) that there is a lot of similarity between these
items. They all have the same basic fields:
TitleSynopsisBodyStartDateEndDate
(for News, Articles, FAQs start and end date can be used for content
expiration. For events, they are used for the actual event dates.)
But for some types of content, I will need fields specific to that
type. For instance, I want to have a few custom settings for a "Photo
Gallery" type, like, how many rows/columns of thumbnails to display per
page.

I feel like I have 3 options, but would really appreciate your advice. I created diagrams for the 3 options, located here: http://nontalk.com/dbdesign/

Selecting Parent / Child Relationships

Jun 28, 2004

Hello all, I'm having a real hard time trying to figure this one out. I'm trying to create a sql query that selects both the parent name and it's children, but it's got to loop through all the record sets to populate a drop down as an end result.

I think I thought this out correctly:
I have 2 tables

category
relationship

tbl category
cat_id //auto int
cat_name // varchar

relationship
r_id // auto int
parent_id // int
child_id // int

both the parent_id and child_id are associated with the cat_id
in my category table I could have
1cars // this is parent
2 audi
3 bmw
4 chevy

Table data example

r_id parent_id child_id
****************************
1 1 15
2 1 16
3 1 17
4 2 55
5 2 56
etc...
I want to select both the parent cat_name from category and also select the child cat_name where the parent_id = #

I can do it manaully like this
select cat_name, cat_id, parent_id , child_id from category, relationships where child_id = cat_id and parent_id = 1

what is the best way to loop through all the parent ids to find child category?
Could this be done in a stored procedure?

thanks in advance.

Database Design: Multiple DB's Vs One DB?

Jul 3, 1999

Good Morning to Everyone :-)

We're having DB Design discussions in our office for a new project. Basically, we're trying to decide on a DB Solution that allows us to manage multiple online communities. We expect to have several hundred thousand users (about 100k per community), and each user will have associations to user-specific content on the community level.

At some point, we expect to have to export one or several communites into their own Datasource. This will be a downstream event that will not affect us in the immediate future.

In terms of administering the DB and each community, we're having trouble deciding between generating this DB in one inclusive datasource vs creating multiple datasources (one for each community). With that in mind, any advice or suggestions that anyone may have on this subject would be appreciated.

FYI -- We're running CF v4 and MSSQL v7.

Our concerns are as follows:

Data Structure Issues (what abilities/SQL functions will we lose when implementing multiple DB's vs one DB? We definitely have a need to be relational at every level of this application.)

DB Performance (will a one DB solution run more efficiently on MS SQL v7 with high traffic than several DB's?)

Administration (It's our understanding that multiple DB's will cause us to lose our ability to perform table joins, etc. Are there any other shortcomings that we should be aware of?)

Stability Issues (We've heard that one DB vs Multiple DB's will have fewer threads. We've also heard that MS SQL v7 becomes increasingly unstable as more threads get created. Is this true, or is our understanding of this issue wrong?)

CF Integration Issues (How will CF v4 react to handling a large amount of high-traffic DSN's vs. having one DSN and the same amount of traffic?)

Thanks in advance for all your help. We look forward to hearing from you.

DB Design :: How To Restrict Multiple Access To Same Database

Sep 16, 2015

I have a single database and 5 user which use this database for DDL and DML operations.

The problem we are facing here is, every time a user need to do some work in this database he/she had to ask(manually) to rest of the 4 users whether they are doing some task over the same DB or not. Sometime due to communication gap one user open any transaction which creates a deadlock for another user to execute any query over the same tables in this DBI want to get rid of this problem by making it configurable from SQL Server part so that if any user which is already accessing this DB, so the other user don't get access to it, kind of Mutually exclusive behavior.

How to do this.

Database Design- Referencing Multiple Database

Sep 27, 2007

Hi All,
I am designing database where few of the master tables will reside in different database or in case different server. Scenario is
Server "A" with Database "A" may host the "Accounts" table.
Server "B" with Database "B" may host the "Product" table.
I am designing database "Project" which will hosted in Server "A".
My application requires this master tables [readonly access] as data inserted in my application refers this tables. Also there are reports to be generated which refer this tables.
How do i design my database and sql queries?
I am thinking of approach of having equivalent tables created in my database and writing service which keep tables in my database in sync. This will ensure good perfomance during transaction and reports as they will need to refer this table locally as opposed to different database or different server.

Any thoughts on above approach?? or any better/standard way for such scenarios ?

Thanks in Advance. Your inputs will be of great help.

Database Design - Multiple Vs. Single Database

Apr 12, 2007

Hello:

My client has a db with the following structure:

Online US Searchable Map of the 50 US States. Users search criteria is the following: Query records by selecting state, county, then record. Each County table has 10-20 tables. All databases combined = 500MB and TLogs = 100MB.

How would you re-design a relational DB where users could query data by state-county-record. Currenty the DB's are created by the County of each state which creates hundreds of DB's in SQLServer with no realtionship to each US state. What would be the best design to ensure good performance, data integrity and maintenance? Would you create 1 DB with all 50 states, create 4 DB's and divide by region(N,S,E,W), 50 DB's of each state or leave it as is with each county it's on DB? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

PPV's, Loops && Child Packages - Bug Or By Design

Jun 29, 2006

It would appear that if a Child package is called more than once from a Parent using the 'Execute Package' task, then after the first execute the Parent Package Variables are not applied to child package. I.E we build dimensions in a master database and these are then loaded to a number of topic specific datamarts. We simply pass Parent variables to the child that hold source & target connection strings, the first time the package is called the correct database is accessed, subsequent Executes ignore the variables and use the original values. Manipulating the (our) event queue to run the package once results in the correct behaviour

Are packages cached when they are called from a Parent? if so is there a flag that I have missed to force a reload each time a child is executed?

This has just become a big problen for us so any guidance would greatly appreciated.

Database Design Question - Isolated, Unrelated Tables

Jun 25, 2007

Hi,I have a question regarding best practices in database design. In arelational database, is it wise/necessary to sometimes create tablesthat are not related to other tables through a foreign Keyrelationship or does this always indicate some sort of underlyingdesign flaw. Something that requires a re evaluation of the problemdomain? The reason I ask is because in our application, the user can perform xnumber of high level operations (creating/updating projects, creating/answering surveys etc. etc.). Different users can perform differentoperations and each operation can manipulate one or more table. Thispart of the system is done and working. Now there is a requirement tohave some sort of audit logging inside the database (separate from thetext based log file that the application generates anyway). This"audit logging" table will contain high level events that occur insidethe application (which may or may not relate to a particularoperation). This table is in some sense related to every other tablein the database, as well as data that is not in the database itself(exceptions, external events etc.). For example : it might haveentries that specify that at time x user created project y, at time Auser filled out survey B, at time C LDAP server was down, At time D anunauthorized login attempt occurred etc.As I said, these seems to suggest a stand alone, floating table with afew fields that store entries regarding whats going on the systemwithout any direct relationship to other tables in the database. But Ijust feel uneasy about creating such an isolated table. Another optionis to store the "logging" information in another schema/database, butthat doubles the maintainance work load. Not really looking forward tomaintaining/designing two different schemas.I had a look at the microsoft adventureworks database schema diagramand they seem to have 3 standalong tables - AWBuildVersion, ErrorLogand DatabaseLog (unless i am reading it wrong!)Any advice, Information or resources are much appreciated.

Design Prob:parent/child W Different Headers: Sorting, Non Scrolling Header Etc

Sep 24, 2007

Report needs to display as follows

Parent
col1,col2,col3...
val1,val2,val3

expandable section
child1
colA,colB,colC
valA,valB,valC

child2
colA...
....

repeat

Am currently implementing this as nested list controls with textboxes due to the fact that the headers for the parent and child differ. (By header I mean the column labels)

1. is there a better way of doing this as I much prefer working with tables/matrix controls?
2. how can I stop the header from scrolling - this is possible with tab/mtx controls. The alternative is to repeat the headers all down the page which wastes space and looks messy
3. How can I apply 'interactive sorting' to the parent columns?

Thanks

Selecting Multiple Records By Multiple Filters...

I have a bit field in Units called OEM, when this is set to true I don't want the select statement to pull this unit down when I am assigning software to other units. Here is my select statement: SELECT Software.SID, Software.SN, Software.Name, Users.First + ' ' + Users.Last AS 'Assigned User', Units.Make + '-' + Units.Model AS 'Assigned Unit' FROM dbo.Software LEFT JOIN dbo.Units ON Software.SN = Units.SN LEFT JOIN dbo.Users ON Units.UID = Users.UID WHERE (Units.OEM = 'FALSE') AND (Software.SN LIKE '%' + @SearchString + '%')Everything works as expected, unless of course the unit has no software assigned to it yet, it won't return it because its not tied to a Units.OEM field. Is there anyway to have it return ALL records that even arn't joined OR are joined but have OEM set to false? Thanks, let me know if I need to clear anything up.-Matthew

How To Create Multiple Tables In A Database

Mar 6, 2008

I am trying to create multiple tables in a database using a SQL Script. First i want to find all the tables that have an Identity Column as a primary key in the database. Then for all the tables that meet the Identity Column and primary key criteria, I want to create a New Table.

For example if the Orders table has a Identity Column as a primary key, I want to Create a New Table called ProdID_Orders. The ProdID_Orders will have 1 column called ProdID.

If the OrdersDetails table has a Identity Column as a primary key, I want to Create a New Table called ProdID_OrdersDetails. The ProdID_OrdersDetails will have 1 column called ProdID.

If the Employee table has a Identity Column as a primary key, I want to Create a New Table called ProdID_Employee. The ProdID_Employee will have 1 column called ProdID.

so the Create Table Statement for the ProdID_Orders will look like this:

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[ProdID_Orders](

[ProdID] [int] NULL

) ON [PRIMARY]

The Create Table Statement for the ProdID_OrdersDetails will look like this:

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[ProdID_OrdersDetails](

[ProdID] [int] NULL

) ON [PRIMARY]

This sequence will continue for all the tables in the database that have an Identity Column as a primary key. Thanks. I will appreciate some assistance with this.
