In SQL Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition, I was wondering if it is possible in the Add Connection dialog under Advanced settings to change the Data Source SQL server from the local .sqlexpress to a network SQL Express server. It seems as though the option is locked. I am in a doman, and using Windows Authentication. I also have TCP/IP enabled on the SQL server, and no firewall restrictions for the SQL service. Also, my account permissions should also allow me to do this.
I just realized recently that a database "XYZ" in the Object Explorer of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) is put in the Database Explorer of my VB 2005 Express for processing a Stored Procedure in executing the SELECT statements (not by using Input and/or Output Parameters) during the ADO.NET 2.0-VB 2005 Express programming, then the content of the database "XYZ" is not in the SSMSE. How can I return the database "XYZ" from the DataBase Explorer of VB 2005 Express back to the Object Explorer of SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) safely? Please help and advise.
My default filter settings are: Name Schema Created How do I add an additional filter such as 'Modified'? I can get into the Filter Dialog box by clicking on the Funnel, but I can't figure out how to add another filter to the list.
I am using MS SQL Server Managment Studio 2005 - I also use the old Enterprise Manager from time to time. My questions are about making SMS2005 more user friendly.
I) Is there a way to keep the list of server connections displayed in the object explorer after the application is closed and re-opened?
II) Is there a way to save the password in the "Connect Object Explorer" so I don't have to keep confirming the password to enable the connection?
In summary: In Enterprise Manager, the database engines are always displayed in the Object Explorer and are automatically connected upon opening the manager. Is this functionality possible in SMS2005?
When trying to create a data source in Solution Explorer the Provider is greyed out and only allows me to create a connection to a SQL server database although I can connect to an oracle database in Server Explorer
I am a newbie to .NET and MS SQL server. I am trying to connect to sql server d/b from my application files.
How should i open a connection from my system pc5 (where application/proj being developed) to SQL serevr which is installed on my server(server1). Both are in network.
I have installed sql client on my system(pc5) and created my d/b (MyDB) thru EM, now how can i create username & password for MyDB datbase.
I had installed ASP.NET Commerce server(from ASP.NEt site) on my system pc5 its working fine with accessing Commerce d/b from server1. I observed the string in web.config file of commerce application it is as follows.
In the same way can i create Username and passsword for MyDB database, if so how should i do that. that should look like some thing like this..
<add key="ConnectionString" value="server=server1;database=MyDB;uid=MyDBUser;pwd=MyDBpass;" /> to do in this way i need to create username and pw for MyDB . How should i create username ansd pw for MYDB datase.
ok im trying to set up an odbc connection to my database. i am using MS SQL SERVER 2005 Express on my labtop that is running windows xp.
on the labtop i went into control panel - admin tools - data sources (odbc) and then under the user dns tab i added a sql server with these values in the fields name: MyFoxData Description: [i left empty] Server: TESTINGSQLEXPRESS
then i hit next
then i have checked With Sql Server authentication using a login id and password entered by users. i enter in my login id and password. i then uncheck connect to sql server to obtain default settings. i hit next and change default database to DNN445 and i leave everything else the way it is, before i save it i test the connection and it works fine.
I do the same exact steps on my desktop to try and connect to the SQL database on the labtop but for some reason i keep getting this message
Microsoft SQL Server ODBC Driver Version 03.85.1117
Running connectivity tests...
Attempting connection [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]Specified SQL server not found.
I'm trying to add a new connection in server explorer. The server will not appear in the server drop down list, and when i manually type in the server and database name, the connection fails saying
"An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - could not open a connection to SQL Server)"
I made sure the remote connections were on, and I am having no problems open the sql connection in code.
First up - my apologies if this is not the right forum for this question. Please let me know if there is a more appropriate one for this question.
I have come across an issue with my SQL Server 2005 Express Edition install. It has been running fine since the install (a few months back). And I can still interact (query, update etc) the databases just fine. However, SQL Management Server Studio Express has started to produce an error message when I attempt to connect the Object Explorer.
The error message is shown below.
I have tried to access the link shown in the error message but there is no information provided there.
I can use SQL Management Server Studio Express to run queries on the databases so it would appear that the underlying services are all running OK.
The SQL Server is installed using SQL Authentication only and I have not made any changes to Service accounts or the services themselves. The protocols all appear to be in order too - Shared Memory, Named Pipes, TCP/IP are all enabled.
I have restarted the SQL services and even rebooted the machine, but to no avail.
I would really appreciate if anyone out there could give me some guidance on what may be causing this issue.
Note: The SQL Server is installed on WinXP Pro SP2 running in a VirtualPC. All apps are release versions (no beta or CTP)

I have added several SqlDataSource controls to my C# project, but when I try to configure them, there seems to be a lot of greyed out buttons. Either the WHERE, ORDER BY, and ADVANCED buttons are greyed out, or when they are active, the ADVANCED button always displays the advabced options which are always greyed out. I doesn't make any sense to me. Please explain (in baby language please)
I have a VS2005 application developed against SQL Server Developer whose target database system is SQLE. Last night I downloaded SQL and built the datbase. I can connect to and manipulate the database easily with the Studio Management Console. The intention is to use SQLE locally. I can't connect programmatically to the local SQLE server.
I have used the surface config monitor and turned on all protocols except VIA. I've also been through with the configuration manager. I can connect via the Studio Management Console using the information in the connection string which is:
When I reached my limit I sent it a moderator who is an SQL Expert. He had the project and database and was also unable to connect, getting the same error.
"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)"

I downloaded and ran AdventureWorks.msi into my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) one year ago.But I did not know how to attach it to my SSMSE then. Last week, I deleted it from the "Add or Remove" of Control Panel and I downloaded the new AdventureWork.msi and installed it my SSMSE. Today, I tried to use the Database Explorer of VB 2005 Express for the first Stored Procedure programming. I clicked on AdventureWorks.mdf and I got the following error: One or more files do not match the primary of the database. If you are attempting to attach a database, retry the operation with the correct files. If this is an existing database, the file may be corrupt and should be restored from a backup. Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'CENADe1enxshc'. Log file 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDataAdventureWorks_Data_log.ldf' does not match the primary file. It may be from a different database of the log may have been rebuilt previously. Please help and advise me how to correct this problem.
I have installed 2 SQL Server 2005 Express sample databases from 2 books, ASPnet 2.0 and ADOnet 2.0. The ASPNETDB.MDF was shown in App_Data and Database Explorer, but not in the SQL Server Management Studio Express. The AdoStepBy Step database created by a ConfigDB.exe was displayed in the Management Studio, but not in the App_Data, or Database Explorer.
Is this the way SQL Server 2005 runs the 2005 databases for SQL Server 2005 Express only? Or also in SQL Server 2005?
In the VB 2005 Express, I can get the SqlConnection and ConnectionString of a Database "shcDB" in the Object Explorer of SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) by the following set of code: ///--CallshcSpAdoNetVB2005.vb--////
Imports System.Data
Imports System.Data.SqlClient
Imports System.Data.SqlTypes
Public Class Form1
Public Sub InsertNewFriend()
Dim connectionString As String = "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=shcDB;Integrated Security=SSPI;"
Dim connection As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(connectionString)
Try
connection.Open()
Dim command As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("sp_insertNewRecord", connection)
command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure ....................................... etc. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////// If the Database "shcDB" and the Stored Procedure "sp_inertNewRecord" are in the Database Explorer of VB 2005 Express, I plan to use "Data Source=local" in the following code statements to get the SqlConnection and ConnectionString: ......................... ........................
Dim connectionString As String = "Data Source=local;Initial Catalog=shcDB;Integrated Security=SSPI;"
Dim connection As SqlConnection = New SqlConnection(connectionString)
Try
connection.Open()
Dim command As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("sp_insertNewRecord", connection)
command.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure ........................ etc.
Is the "Data Source=local" statement right for this case? If not, what is the right code statement for my case?
I am working on Visual Web Developer Express Edition 2005. When I right click on database explorer to create an SQL server database then I always find the option " Create New SQL Server database " Disabled.
Can any one tell me how to enable that option please ?
I try to learn "How to Access Stored Procedures with ADO.NET 2.0 - VB 2005 Express: (1) Handling the Input and Output Parameters and (2) Reporting their Values in VB Forms". I found a good article "Calling Stored Procedures from ADO.NET" by John Paul Cook in http://www.dbzine.com/sql/sql-artices/cook6. I downloaded the source code into my VB 2005 Express:

I would like to create an index on a table from the Database Explorer.
I am using Microsoft Visual C# 2005 Express Edition.
I downloaded Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express with the intention of using it to create an index, but it does not seem to find the database that I created from the Database Explorer.
Hi, I have been able to view the databases and all of their tables but now when I cilck the "+" next to the database or try to connect a new one i get an error message: "Generating user instances in SQL Server is disabled. Use sp_configure 'user Instances enabled' to generate user instances" I don't know what I have done and I don't know how to fix it, Please help me! Best regards, Elliot
How do i find who has changed the settings in the database.
basically when i looked at this morning i saw a database which is set in single user mode.when i tried to look at the errorlog i found nothing except the spid's of different people and as far as i know i think that spid's are assigned randomly depending on there availability.
Now this has happened twice recently and now i want to find out who the culprit is his username, machine name but not spid.
Can i do it if how can i.
how do i track each and every users info what he is doin and at what time.
do i need to set up or configure any options.
sometimes i also see that there is a dbcc command run by as it says winnt/system what does this mean how is this running.
I just upgraded to SQl Server 2000 from 7, and realized that all my reports created with existing scripts no longer work fine. The reports appear corrupt. Below is an example of a report script:

I had an idea to put all my web design settings, css text and web content in the database..This way it would be easy for others to edit remotely. Do you guys think this would have an impact on performance if I do this?
Hi,I would like to know how to get a list of configuration settings for adatabase. Is there a table that I can select this info from?Or a file (perhaps an ini file?) of some kind?Things like timeout settings, rollback space, table space, etc. Thanks
I'm using Visual Studio 2005 (8.0.50727.42) and going into the menu option Website > ASP.Net Configuration, access the security tab and all I get is an error message stating that there is a problem with the selected data store "Unable to Connect to the SQL Server Database"
I have SQL Server 2005 (Express Edition). I have created a database "NetDev" with the right connection, etc.
I can use the SQL server fine for my Windows applications, but somehow this ASp.Net Configuration tool is not making any sense.
I also used the aspnet_regsql command from framework 2.0 to create a DataBase to no avail.
Does anyone out there knows if there is a bug with this tool???
Script to Reverse Engineer / Script out your EXISTING database mail settings?
I set up a profile to use gMail, and it seems logical for me to export out the settings to a script, then run the script on my laptop, other servers, etc.
There's no built in option, so I figured i'd ping the forum before i do it myself.
There are example scripts where you fill in the blanks, examples how to set up dbmail, but i did not find anything that scripts out existing settings.
I am working on a project that contains several databases in SQL and many settings. The problem I am encountering is that I want to be able to update the program for all my customers. That is no problem.
The problem I am meeting is where, when the program is updated, all the settings and all the information in the databases reverts to the default values, or the values that were compiled with the new update.
I want to be able to update their program without deleting all the settings they have.
hello i have a problem and i dont know if it can fixed or not i'm using asp.net 2 and sqlserver 2005 i have a table named questions in the database and that table has 5 columns questionid,question,answer1,answer2,answer3 every questions has 3 answers 1 right and the other 2 are wrong what i want to do is select 10 random questions and their right and wrong answers show in my asp.net page as application the answers will be in radio buttons so is that can be done or it's not possible.thanks all
4 app servers with regional date and time settings of locale A.
1 database server with locale settings B.
What is happening is that timestamps are being generated on the app servers, these are then in a sql command which fails on the database server since the timestamp format is invalid.
It was suggested that we change the regional locale settings of the database server, but will this not have serious implications , for example every current timestamp format in the datbase will become invalid?
In a nutshell is it safe to change a database servers regional date time locale settings ? Or are there serious implications?
I added a connection (ADO.NET) object by name testCon in the connection manager - I wanted to programmatically supply the connection string. So I used the "Expressions" property of the connection object and set the connectionstring to one DTS variable. The idea is to supply the connection string value to the variable - so that the connection object uses my connection string.
Then I added a "Backup Database Task" to my package with the name BkpTask. Now whenever I try to set the connection property of BkpTask to the testCon connection object, by typing testCon, it automatically gets cleared. I am not able to set the connection value.
Then after spending several hours I found that this is because I have customized the connection string in testCon. If I don't customize the connection string, I am able to enter the "testCon" value in the connection property of the BkpTask.
I just found that the content of my Database "ssmsExpressDB" is gone, but the name "ssmsExpressDB" remains in the Object Explorer of SQL Server Management Studio Express. If I delected the name "ssmsExpressDB" and executed the following .sql:
Unable to open the physical file "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDatassmsExpressDB.mdf". Operating system error 32: "32(The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.)".
And I have closed all my projects and I do not know what " The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process" is all about!? Please help and tell me how I can re-attach the content of my "ssmsExpressDB" in the Object Explorer of SQL Server Management Studio Express.
I found the "ssmsExpressDB" is being used by my VB 2005 Express project "Hello-SQLCLR-1": in the Database Explorer, Data Connections place. How can I put it back to the Object Explorer of SQL Server Management Studio Express? Please help and advise.
