Database Mirroring Hangs On ALTER DATABASE SET PARTNER
Jun 26, 2005Hi,
View 6 RepliesHi,
View 6 RepliesI've read that when this run's, it removes all db mirroring information on that db. What exactly does it remove?
Here's my senario:
We are using SQL 2005€™s db mirroring process. We are using the certificate method of authentication between the principle and the mirror db€™s.
My question is that when the ALTER DATABASE dbname SET PARTNER OFF is run, does it remove these certificate settings as well? In other words when I want to enable the db mirroring, will I need to recreate these certificates or just recreate the endpoints to use these certificates?
Hello,
Am I reading it wrong or can I have a developer edition as a partner?
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/dbmirror.mspx Please take a look at the Database Mirroring and SQL Server 2005 Editions section.
Anyone knows?
Thank you.
Running this query in DR server to start SQL mirroring but encountered an error below.
Query:
use master
go
alter database test set partner= N'TCP://HOSTNAME.DOMAIN.GROUP.INTRANET:5023'
go
Error:
Msg 1452, Level 16, State 6, Line 2
The partner server instance name must be distinct from the server instance that manages the database. The ALTER DATABASE SET PARTNER command failed.
Hi, i am working with SMO object,
At the time of accessing remote(LAN) database server I encountered the
following message: "MirroringPartnerInstance" : Undefined error.
I m not able to figure out whats the exact problem is..
i had gone through the following link too but doesn't make any sense to me :
msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.sqlserver.management.smo.database.mirroringpartnerinstance.aspx
All i understand is i need to set some property of mirroring partner.
Does any on have any idea how to resolve this problem
Thanking you all in advance
Vivek
Server A = primary SQL DBs (mirroring origination)
Server B = failover SQL DBs (mirroring destination)
For database mirroring a witness is required.
Can the witness live in another instance of SQL on server B?
I want a database user to be able to alter login, database user and database role from my application. so, i assigned that user to sccurityadmin server role, db_accessadmin and db_securityadmin database roles....By now, the user can add or remove login and database user. However, the user cannot add or remove any database role membership. What am I missing here?? What should I do so that the user can create, and alter database roles in the database??
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just finished configuring my first test mirrored environment (High safety mode). I setup the database engine service accounts on each of the servers with domainuser. I inherited a production mirrored environment set up by someone else. On the production servers the database engine service account is NT Authorityuser a local account. I am trying to practice installing Windows updates within a mirrored environment and I not sure how to proceed when the service account is NT Authority user account. should I change the service account to a domainuser?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a script that automates some db drop/restore operations and bringing the database to single user mode is part of it: ALTER DATABASE ... SET SINGLE_USER WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE...I want this to executes under a login, that has restricted privileges, so I've created a login and granted it a dbcreator role + ALTER ANY DATABASE privileges.
Problem: When I run the script against a database with an active/sleeping connection:It fails when using the restricted login: "Msg 5061...ALTER DATA BASE failed because a lock could not be placed on database ..."It completes successfully when using a sysadmin login According to stackoverflow.com the solution is to kill the active/sleeping connections to the database, before ALTER-ing it, which works fine, but the question is....
Questions: Why the "ALTER DATABASE..." statement works under the sysadmin login, but not under a dbcreator one?Does this mean the sysadmin login kills the connections to the target database in the background? Is it possible to grant additional privileges to the restricted login, so the "ALTER DATABASE..." statement won't need preventive killing of the connections?
When I issue this command:
ALTER DATABASE foo set PARTNER = 'TCP://10.3.3.1:1234'
I get this error message:
The database is being closed before database mirroring is fully initialized. The ALTER DATABASE command failed.
What does that mean, and how do I fix it?
I am using SQL 6.5. Can I create a database and Alter the same
database in one SQL Script?
Thanks in advance.
I set up a new mirror server. Everything is good except that the Database Mirroring Monitor is not working for one of the databases. In the monitor the principal data is showing up as blank
If I look at dbm_monitor_data on the principal most of the data columns (e.g. Send_queue_size) are null where as they have data for the other databases.
Both servers are SQL Server 9.0.2047 Enterprise Edition.
Any idea what might be going on here?
Thanks in advance.
Using SQL Server 2008, we would like propose mirroring between two servers of a critical database. Since we initiate, may require to clarify on its purpose and also required changes from application end.Any changes required from OS Level? (I believe both servers IP or Host name should be added in host entries. Mirroring ports should be allowed/open including Principal and mirror server IP Addresses): Windows Team.Any changes required from Application? (Instance name, authentication: user name and its password should be added in web config files): Application Team.Any changes required from Network Team? Also for mirroring both the principal and mirror servers should be with same version, does it only mean SQL Server 2008 versions are enough or does it also mean to say build numbers 10.00.4000 should also be same.URL....
View 5 Replies View RelatedBackground - I have a publication that propigates schema changes. I have a view in which I want to remove a column.
Error - Going by what the BOL says, I use Alter View and delete the column from my select statement. I issue the alter view command against the Publication database and it just "churns". I do not get any locking errors or any other type of error, but the statement never completes execution. I watched it run for 10 minutes and cancelled the query. Executing the same statement against a copy of the database that is not being published executes in 1, 2 seconds.
Here is what I am doing:
Old View: Select table1.record_number, table1.record_date, table1.status_code, table2.status_desc,
table2.txt_sort_order
FROM table1 join table2 on table1.status_code = table2.status_code
The query I am executing:
SET ANSI_NULLS ON
GO
SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON
GO
ALTER VIEW myview
AS
Select table1.record_number, table1.record_date, table1.status_code, table2.status_desc
FROM table1 join table2 on table1.status_code = table2.status_code
I have a scheduled task that runs backups on our prodcution database at midnight - it usually takes five minutes to run - but the last two nights it has been running for hours and never completing. It ran for 3 hours last night - until i was paged by the database that the transaction log backups were failing (with error 3023) to run because the backup (Backup Database db to db1_nightly with init) job was still running.
The night before our European users could not reach the database - the machine was locked up when I got in in the morning - needed a hard boot to get it back up.
I ran the backup job last night at 8:30 pm and it succeeded - but when it ran at 12:00 AM for the last two days - it runs and never completes. When I tried to kill the process in Enterprise Manager at 3:00 AM, it wouldn't stop. I tried stopping the SQLAgent Service and MSSQLSERVER service to stop the process, with no luck. Finally an early morning drive and a hard boot killed the process.
Any thoughts? There were no new jobs scheduled in the last couple of days. There is no error in the logs (the step never completes - so it's not recorded). The backup works fine if run earlier in the day.
I am running SQL 7.0 with SP2.
Thanks you for any ideas - I'm hoping not to have to drive in at 3 AM this morning - so any thoughts would be great.
SQL Server 2000
Backup database command hangs. The command I am using is:
BACKUP DATABASE @DBName TO DISK = @filename WITH INIT
Size of the database is 140GB and we have 210 GB free disk space.
sp_who status shows runnable.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
I am trying to move one of my database log to different location but I am geeting an error when I try to do this.
I am moving Registration DB log file from 'c:mssql7
egistrstion_log.ldf'
to 'e:sql
egistration_log.ldf'
Here the syntax I am using to do this:
alter database registration modify file (name='registration_log',filename= 'e:sql
egistration_log.ldf')
But I get the following error:
Server: Msg 5037, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
MODIFY FILE failed. Do not specify physical name.

Hi all this is my first of most likely many posts.
I am writting a stored proc that will be used on many diffrent named databases and i am setting the database name with a variable. I would like to use this variable in the following situation any clues on this would be greatly appreciated.
DECLARE @DBName varchar(50)
SET @DBName='Database'
alter database @DBName set recovery full

Hey,
I am trying to give a user permission to change the name of a database.
They are a member of the server role 'secuirtyadmin'
They are a member of the database role 'db_owner'
They have been granted ALTER permission on the database.
But every time I try and run the command
ALTER DATABASE <dbname> MODIFY NAME = <newdbname>
I get an error saying the database doesn't exist or you don't have permissions.
What am I missing?
Hi All,
Does anybody know the OS requirements for Database Mirroring? I checked BOL and Google but couldn't find any info on that.
Thanks.
Hi All,
I have read on the web that high protection mode not recommended, except in the event of replacing the existing witness server. But I can't find the reason why anywhere. Can anybody explain? Thanks.
Hi All,
Couple of questions about database mirroing.
1. Once the mirroring is setup is it possible to switch between high-protection and high-performance modes? If it is will I have to stop the mirroring, switch the modes and then restart it again?
2. Let's say the principal server went down and I manually failed over to the mirror server. Mirror server runs as a new principal server for a couple of days and then I bring the original principal server back up. What needs to be done in order to bring transactions on the principal server up to date?
Thanks.
for a database mirroring , which stretergy is good.
Creating with witness server or without it.?
I am firsttime doing this , so i am posting it to the forum..
and also if we are creating the database mirroring with witness server for automatic failover , will the witness server need the same amount of harddisk space like the pricipal or mirror server.??
thanks
we want to migrate our production server , without taking the database down.so what we did was , we mirrored the databases from production to one of our development servers and we took the prodcution server for uprgrade.
so today we are moving back (mirroring) all the databases from that development server to our new production server.
my question is , when i move
productionserver_old(principal server) - having the script for principal server
development server(mirror server---->principalserver)) - having the script for mirror server , which is now acting as principal server
new production server(mirror server) - having the script for mirror server. will become principal server , once i moved all the databases
now while mirroring between the developement server and the new production server, i have to run the scripts for the mirror server only.
so both the servers are havign the mirror script now...
is that a problem, or any other way i can handle this....

Can we have database mirroring for two databases. Like i have an application where in the db used are two, namely DB1 and DB2, DB1 is used in the connection string and with the help of DB1 the tables and sps of DB2 are handled.
in this case can i go ahead with database mirroring. Please comment and give the idea or link on the same.
Hi,
Is there a way to automatically mirror/backup a SQL Express database with a SQL Server 2005 licenced system?
They will be on seperate machines on the internet.
I have done manual backup and restores but would like to allow constant updates to allow both databases to be synchronized.
I read that the SQL Server 2005 version has a mirroring facility but I also read that this is not possible in the Express version.
What other (automated) options do I have?
Thanks Andrew
Have a server running 14 production databases, 12 of which are replicated (transactional replication) to a second server for reporting. Distributor on same machine as publishers. All set to 'SyncWithBackup' = true, distribution set to Full recovery mode, log backups every 30 minutes, full backup nightly. This generally runs just fine.
Occasionally, the process 'hangs' indefinitely (has gone 12 hours or more before being caught) and I need to stop the backup job, stop one or more of the log reader agents, and restart everything, and it proceeds just fine. Annoying, but not fatal, and not very often.
This time, no matter what, the backup job hangs when it runs. This is true whether it is the FULL backup or just a Transaction Log backup. It hangs on the stored procedure sp_msrepl_backup_start, at the point where it is attempting to update the table 'MSrepl_backup_lsns'. When it is hung like this, all of the log reader agent jobs are also hung, blocked by this stored proc. I've tried stopping ALL of the log reader agents prior to starting the backup, but the backup process still hangs up at the same spot and never ends.
I can run the select statement in that SP that gathers the data for the databases 'manually' in a query window and it finishes in about 10 seconds. It actually seems to be hung up on the 'UPDATE' statement. When it is hung, I cannot SELECT from MSrepl_backup_lsns unless I append WITH (NOLOCK) to the statement. Nothing else I can find indicates that there is anything else locking that table. DBCC OPENTRAN shows that there is a lock on that table held by that stored proc -- but I can't see any reason why it won't update the table (17 total records) and move on.
As I said, normally this runs just fine. Totally baffled by what may be causing this at this time.
