I am facing problem with Logical File Name while restoring database. I am taking a backup of ABC database from Server1 in abc.bak file.
Then I am creating new database XYZ on Server2. Server1 and Server2 are not connected to each other in anyway, since both servers belong to different companies. Here on Server2 I want to restore backup of abc.bak on XYZ database. I select restore from Device, and on option tab I am selecting Force restore over existing database, in the below option I am specifying current Data & log file path for Move to physical file name.
But Logical file name shows ABC names, but if I tried to change those to XYZ names then restore fails. But if I keep ABC names then it works.
Is anybody knows how to over come this Logical Name issue?
If I run an ALTER DATABASE command that renames the Logical file name of a database, will I run into any unseen consequences in terms of day to day use of the database?
I have a SQL Server 2008 R2 Cluster. I have moved a file to another drive by adding a new file on the drive, doing a shrinkfile with emptyfile. I have removed the old file and when I try to rename the new file to the old files old name, I get an error.

I have completed a failover, thinking the name was being held in cache. I've also renamed to something completely different then tried to rename to the old filename.
I want to back up my database to a logical drive and restore it from this logical device. But I am unable to see my logical device through sql server management studio interface. I am able to back up to a logical device and restore it from logical device through T-SQL code. I am wondering how come I am unable to see my logical device from sql server management studio interface. Is there any way, I can solve this problem? Thanks in advance.

We tried to restore an empty database from a backup and got: 'Load database encountered an invalid logical page number' error. This then set the database as 'loading'
Anyone got any ideas?
We aren't exactly sure how big the first database was when the backup was done but if the new database isn't big enough to contain the backed up data, wouldn't we get a more meaningful error?

Is there a way to rename the logical file for a database. For example, if I am moving a development database into production, I can use backup - but the backup takes the logical file names of the database and puts it into my production server. how can I store a filename in the database, i have some GIF files which i want to show up on report, how can i specify those filename with a path in the database. i tried manually entering the path c:Dataimages.gif but it didnt work. Can someone pls tell me how to do it.

In 6.5 , I was NOT able to use mapped network drive for new database device if the MSSQLSERVER service is running under local system account, but if I changed it to using a domain a/c which has the authority to create files on mapped drive, I was able to do it.
But if I tried it in 7.0, it never work and got msg: Server: Msg 5105, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 Device activation error. The physical file name 'e:est2.mdf' may be incorrect. Server: Msg 1802, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. Check previous errors.
Is it something that's normal for 6.5 and 7.0 ???? i.e. we can only create databases on LOCAL drives ? I am just thinking of in case we run of space locally, we can temporarily make use of remote mapped network drive. (say at time of upgrading)
Scenario Configuration : VB.net 2005 Code, WebService for Executing SSIS on Server, SSIS deployed on the Database Server
Problem Description : We are developing windows applicaiton in which we call webservice which was deployed on the same server where SSIS packages are deployed. Now from Code we are passing FilePath name in variable and execute the Package. But the SSis result says that The file name "\computernamefol1fol2fol3fol4abc.txt" specified in the connection was not valid.
More Information:
1. Full Permission are given on this network folder. 2. Package executes successfully from SSIS development solution (BIS solution) 3. Deployed packed executes successfully from the Database Server. 4. From Development pc packege executes successfully. 5. Other packages deployed on the same server executed suucessfully with same configuration and scenario.
Only this package is not executing.

I have a problem with CREATE DATABASE statement, since it needs to specify the absolut path for a file in the FILENAME= option. I would need instead a relative path, i.e. only the name of the file because the script that launch this SQL command is dependant on the installation path decided by the user, during the installation. Is there a way to pass to the FILENAME only the name of the file? Hope to have been clear :-)
In our production we have a database by name MyDb.The application team wanted another database by the name MyDbOld which contains the data of Mydb 1 month old. So I created a database MyDbOld in other instance(test) and restored MyDbOld from the one month backup of MyDb in production server. In test instance I backed MyDbOld as MyDbOld.bak...
In the production instance I created a new DB by the name MyDbOld and restored the MyDbOld in the production from the backup of MyDbold.bak in the test instance. Now I have 2 databases in the production instance ie MyDb and 2)MyDbOld. However I find the logical names of both the databases to be the same although the database name and the physical file name to be different.My questions are-:
1) Does it in any manner affect the integrity of the 2 databases if the 2 databases are in the same instance and have the same logical name? 2) Would the dml or data retrieval operations in the 2 databases have any conflict in any manner what so ever? 3) Having a unique database name, and unique file names for the physical files for any database in an instance what is the purpose and significance of additionally having a logical name for a database? 4) Which I could restore a database from the backup of another database in the same instance and at the same time change the logical and physical name of the files to correspond to the new database.
I am using VB with Visual Studio Express. I am new to these tools. I have SQL Server 2005 Express installed on my machine. I think that I have the right version. I am just using Express for taking classes and teaching myself on my machine. I want to create a SP that creates a new database, so I script-ed out the db and paste the script into new SP gui (SQL 2000). I want to pass it a variable for the data/log file location that is not the default location. I am trying to attach to aMDF and LDF file that are on the remote location. When you try to do this though getting an error.. "File filename.mdf is on a network device not supported for database files." How to do this.

I have seen this before. A 2000 restore fails, leaving the database thinking it is being restored but the restore job failed and errors when it is restarted. EM is clueless. I believe there is a proc to reset some flag. Can you share it with me???

Configuration: WINNT Server Enterprise 4.0 w/SP5 SQL Server 7 Enterprise & SP1
2 SQL Servers: Production Server Standby server
I Backup (full backup) databases to disk on primary server (logical backup devices are physicaly located on a Standby server (dedicated gigabit NIC in each server for this process). Transaction logs are applied to the Standby server throughout the day.
Problem: How to keep out "sa" and sysadmins from a database while I'm restoring (or between restores) to a standby server? The database being restored cannot be in use during a restore. If a DBA forgets that this process is happening, the statement fails (RESTORE)for the database they happen to be in at the time of the restore.
Example restore statement: Standby Server - RESTORE DATABASE databasename FROM database_dd WITH DBO_ONLY, REPLACE, STANDBY = 'g:Mssql7FromPrimaryDatabaseName_undo.ldf'
I could restrict Domain sysadmin access and change sa password. I could also put the database in "Single user" mode, however this could become problem if my process disconnects and then someone else connects - then my process is locked out. What I'm really looking for is to lock out all activity for a database that is in "standby mode" except for RESTORE processes.
I'm taking a database(read-only) backup from one server and restoring it on other server. As soon as restore is done it is bringing database into single-user read-only mode.

In a development server you take a backup and you want to move the entire database to a production server. The production server does not contain the database, users, or logins in master.
When you restore the backup to production in 7.0, the users get moved to DBO because the logins do not exist and then you cannot delete them.
We are having to drop the users from the database on development, back up the database and restore it to production, then recreate the users on production.
This is bogus and did not happen in 6.5 because of the aliases.
I am fairly new to VS 2005 and SQL Server CE. I have developed a Desktop Windows application using VB 2005 and the SQL Compact Edition Database. This application will sell to users via web download.
When they download a service patch, or updated version, I wish for them to retain the data in their present database. In other words, fill the new database with the old data. The new table structures will remain intact except for added columns at the end.
Question is how to save the old data and update the new database with it. Is there an easy way to do this, or do I need to write a module to save a database copy, and update the new database with content at install time?
