Database And Report Server In Different Instances?

I have a database in the SQL 2005 default instance and a report server in a named instance. The database has a symmetric key for decrypting one of the columns. When the report server queries the database I get this error: "Cannot find the symmetric key 'key', because it does not exist or you do not have permission."
I know the symmtric key is there because it works when queried from the same instance. Should the database and report server be in the same instance? Or is there a way to change the permissions so that the report server can access the symmetric key in the other instance?
I might note that the report server is able to access unencrypted data in the other instance. The error only occurs when I try to decrypt data using the symmetric key.

I would like to know if it is possible to have different applications on separate report servers sharing one report server database. If so are there possible issues or ptfalls to this type of architecture?

Greetings... I'm working at consolidating several Reporting Services installations into one so we can decommission some old servers. We have two Report Servers that are in SQL Server 2000 and three that are in SQL Server 2005 (none are in a web farm configuration). I can upgrade the 2000 databases to 2005 format just fine, but now how do I merge these five ReportServer/ReportServerTempDB databases into one? I'm reluctant to redeploy reports to the "official" Report Server because we lose security, subscription, and scheduling information by doing that. So redeploy would cost us time and data loss over hundreds of reports, thus my hope to merge the databases at a data level. Is there a tool to automate this process, or has anyone tried this before? When I am in Visual Studio 2005, and I try to add an SQL database, I get the following error "generating user instances in sql server is disabled. use sp_configure user instances enabled to generate user instances." I am currently using SQL server 2005 Express. What do I need to do, to create an SQL database? Thanks in advance.

I want to list the instances SQL server in the network and their corresponding database. I found an API which list the server names in the network, but only for the main SQL server it is connecting and listing the database. For others it times out and gives run time error [DBNETLIB] Connection Open () SQL server doesn¡¯t exist or access denied

I had a server with SQL Server 7.0
I installed a named instance of SQL Server 2000 and then i passed all my DB
of the 7.0 instance to the 2000 instance.
Then i removed the 7.0 instance, that was the default instance.
So at the moment there is only the 2000 version, but it isn't the default
instance
Can the 2000 instance become the default instance? (So that clients can
connect to it simply through computer name, and not creating an alias)

Hi, i have created a database in business contact manager which is currently been used by five toher employees. I was trying to move that database to my server. Well I found this tool online called "Business contact manager 2007 database tool". I am trying to run it on the server but it is giving me a following error:
"Cannot retrive the list of SQL Server instances. Please make sure that SQL Server 2005 or SQL 2005 Express is installed and that the service is running."
I have SQL 2005 installed on my computer and I dont have any idea how to resolve this issue. It would be great if someone could help me.

Is it true that SQlL server Express can only use Local Database Engine to host the database?

Hi My project is in .NET 2003 i.e. framework 1.1 and database in SQLServer 2000. But the reports have been developed using SQLServer 2005 Reporting Services. Now when I am trying to deploy them through deployment project of .NET its giving me following error:"Using other editions of SQL Server for report data sources and/or the report server database" is not supported in this edition of Reporting Services. every 1 hour my server's computer is restarting !
when the windows finish restarting i open the Event viewer and see that what coused it is the error :
"Report Server Windows Service (MSSQLSERVER) cannot connect to the report server database."

I went to my comp ->rt cick->manage-IIS->default website->rt click->properties->directory security->annoymouse access€¦EDIT->under Default domain it was blank, and i added a domain there.
And i was getting error opening up the reports from localhost.
I changed everything to same as it was previosly, and I am getting the error:

I am newbie and working with an application that ueses report server 2000 to make reports.
The problem is somebody has moved the database and changed some acounts and now I can not either get any report from the server or install my changes for reports. I used to run this commando to install changes for reports:
rs -i PublishGeckoReports.rss -s http://IpAddress:32808/reportserver -v definitionPath="C:TempDeploymentReportsRDL" -v targetFolder="/MyReports"
here is the error message i get when i try to install:

The error happens on Reporting Service version 9.00.3017.00 (the version we are running in Production). The Reporting Service and its database are actually resided in the same physical server. And the strange thing is that it does not prevent any functionalities or features working except when I launch the Management Studio on that server, it usually takes 2 minutes to load up. (any other server would just take 5 -10 seconds).
Can any one help?

I installed MSDE on a pc with no problems, but now I realise I want to create another instance and set DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=1 so I can use Enterprise Manager over the network from another PC.
If I create another instance of MSDE on the PC, can I remove / uninstall the first instance?
Is it any big deal if I leave the first instance?
and last but not least...
If I create a new instance will it see the database I created on the first instance?
told you so...
Can anyone recomend some good literature to explain about instances please :D

I have a 2012 AlwaysOn DB Mirroring environment set up with two nodes. Both have 5 installs of SQL named instances.
The issue we are having is when we patch one server and fail everything over, some of the applications will error. Some of the applications had to have their web.config files updated with hostinstance name because it seems to not work with DNS.

I'm setting up a simple SSRS implementation for a non-profit organization, using two servers hosted at a data center. The first server has SQL Server Standard Edition and Reporting Services installed. I've designed and deployed a number of useful reports on this server.
I was hoping to isolate this first server by installing IIS and SSRS on the second server, have users browse from the Internet to that second server (over SSL, of course), and have all reports served up from databases (and, presumably, the report server database) on the first server.
During the installation of SSRS on the second server, however, I'm being prompted to specify the service account. According to the help text:
"Reporting Services. Service accounts are used to configure a report server database connection. Choose a domain user account if you want to connect to a report server database on a remote SQL Server instance. If you are using a local report server database, you can use a domain user account or Local System to run the service."
I believe I want to configure SSRS to connect to a report server database on a remote SQL Server instance; therefore, it appears that I need to enter a domain user account. The only problem is, neither server belongs to a domain; they are members of a simple two-server workgroup.
Does SSRS, configured to connect to a report server database on a remote SQL Server instance, require a domain? Does what I'm hoping to accomplish require a domain? Creating a two-server domain seems like overkill for this implementation, doesn't it?

I want my reports to be secure by creating Accounts. In such a case how can I create Accounts in SQL Report Server database set. Is it possible or is there any other approach to achieve this.

with sql server 2000, it is possible to have multiple instances on one server. Now I want to make the second server a subscriber for specific tables before there are some tests/major changes. Has anyone experience with this on the same server. Note : sql server subscriptions between different servers in sql server 7 is not the issue.

I created a named instance of SQL Server 2000 on my notebook. I inadvertantly set the trusted SQL connection to Windows Authentication. This is creating a problem with COM because of username and password. I want to reset it to use SQL Server authentication but I can't find where to do it. Can I do this or do I have to delete this instance and create a new one.
