Database File Is Larger Than The Configured Max Database Size.
Feb 18, 2008
Hello,
I am developing a smart device application with Visual Studio .Net 2005 and SQL Server Compact Edition database. And also using merge replication to synchronize the data from the mobile device to the SQL Server.
My database size is around 350MB. So when I am trying to synchronize this is the error message that I get.
" The database file is larger than the configured maximum database size. The setting takes effect on the first concurrent database connection only.[Required Max Database size ( in MB; 0 if unknown)=129].
I tried changing the Max database size in the connection string and my connection string looks as follows and still did not have any luck.
connstr= "Data Source=Storage CardItems.sdf;Max Database Size=500;"
Any help regarding this would be appreciated.
Thank you
.

Need to confirm if we can add space(increase data file size) for the database which is configured for always on similar to that of mirroring or we need to follow any different procedure.
I have a requirement wherein the datafiles on both the primary and secondary replica got full, if i add space to the primary database will it automatically get added to the secondary replica or not?

The problem that I am having is that with Visual Web Developer I am creating a webpage and having it directly put online, so for example when I start a new ASP.NET page, I select the location to be HTTP, with the location http://MYWEBSERVER/Website and for the language and Visual BasicI notice a couple of things, first that there is no longer a a link under the Main toolbar "Website" selection called the ASP.NET configuration. So how can I configure what I want to have users be able to do? It seems that this choice is only available if I am building the ASP.NET page on my "localhost". So that is the first problem. So I am able to get the pages to work, atleast the things such as the textboxes to show up etc, (Even things as advanced as the "Login" box). How ever when I try to get someone to try to login I am taken to a page that has an server error. The error is:
"The SSE Provider did not find the database file specified in the connection string. At the configured trust level (below High trust level), the SSE provider can not automatically create the database file. "
The Stack Trace Errors are at the bottom. I think this is happening because the automatically generated databases are not getting built online as they are on my computer. On my computer I have MSSQL express. So either the databases are not getting built for some reason, (and I think that is the case as I don't see any in the folder). So I think that somehow I have to create a database on my server, and then somehow configure the ASP.NET file, perhaps in the Web.Config file to look for that new database. Is this the correct methodology? Is there some simpler way that I can just somehow upload things as they are and have them work correctly on my server? The error says that either the Server did not find the database or that the trust level was insufficient. I don't think that is it as I just looked again and I don't see any .MDF files. So how would I go about getting this to work right? Is there a way to do this with MySQL also? So that I don't have to use MSSQL? My server only allows 1 DataBase for that.
Thanks and I hope my question makes sense. It is basically how can I get it to be able to create and check users etc. online?
Brian

Greetings, I have just arrived back into the country (NZ) and back into ASP.NET.
I am having trouble with the following:An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file (file location).../Database.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
It has only begun since i decided i wanted to use IIS, I realise VWD comes with its own localhost, but since it is only temporary, i wanted a permanent shortcut on my desktop to link to my intranet page.
Anyone have any ideas why i am getting the above error? have searched many places on the internet and not getting any closer.
Cheers ~ J

FILEGROWTH = 25MB )
LOG ON

I have written code to combine, delete redundant data in my system. The table structure remains the same, except I changed some INTs to TINYINTs.
When I do sp_spaceused, it tells me that number of rows is smaller(which is correct), but the datasize, and index_size is significantly larger AFTER the deletions.
I tried using shrink, but that doesn't seem to change anything.
When I right-click the database, and choose PROPERTIES, it also confirms that the database got significantly larger.
I am confused about how deleting data and changing to TINYINTs could make my database bigger. What would cause this?

I have replication setup between our main site and a remote one, and have recently noticed that the database at the remote site's .MDF file is about 3 times as large as the main site's. This doesn't seem to make sense since essentially all of our data is replicated between the two servers. Can anyone suggest why this might be happening and what is safe to do to shrink the remote file?
TIA

I have a Database which when I Right Click and go to Properties size is 52 GB
But the Size of MDF + NDF Files is 25 + 7 = 32 GB. Log file Size is 20 GB. So I am thinking -- Properties Size of DB includes size of Log Files too -- is that correct?
But when I do a Full Backup the .bak File Size is 26 GB -- does the Full Backup Shrink a DB ?
I thot Full Backup only Shrink the Log Files and could not find anywhere in BOL where it says BACKUP shrinks the empty space in Database -- can somebody confirm this?

Hi,
I am facing problem of memory size of database file.
I am using SQL Server Express Edition for my application which will log point values after every second.
I have two table in my database
PointValues1_500 with the following columns
DateAndTime of type DATETIME with cluster index
Val1, Val2, Val3 ----- Val500 of type NUMERIC(18,6)
PointValues501-1000 with following columns
DateAndTime of type DATETIME with cluster index
Val1, Val2, Val3 ----- Val500 of type NUMERIC(18,6)
According to specification provided by microsoft DATETIME takes 8 bytes and NUMERIC(18,6) takes 9 bytes and 132 bytes per row for internal usage. So, it will take 4710 bytes approximately per row including index (if i am right).
When I put 60 rows in each table data file size is increased by 1 MB which should be 4710 * 60 (rows) * 2(tables) = 0.6 MB approx. I this scenario i am losing 0.4 MB memory that will cost me a lot if i have point values for 1 hour = 3600 rows per table.
Please give me a suggestion how to overcome this lost.
Best Regards
Haseeb Ahmad

I have SQL 2010 on a server with 2 partitions.
The database is located on the C: drive (original build) but the drive isn't partitioned to handle a db of the size that this one will grow to. I would like to move the full DB instance to another partition.

finding the database size from the backup file.I have SQL 2012 backup file, is there any way to find the estimated database size from the backup.I tried restoring , i got an error saying " no space need additional xxx bytes " ...does this error gives the exact space needed to restore ?
One more question....one of the backup file size is 7.2 GB, when i try to restore it ....it throws error saying it needs 292GB extra space while only 100 Gb is available. How come 392 Gb sized database becomes 7.2 Gb .bak file ?

I would like to add to it the actual file size in mb or gb of each file to the results.
select sd.name,mf.name as logical_name,mf.physical_name,
case
when dm.mirroring_state is null then 'No'
else 'Yes'
end as Mirrored
from sys.sysdatabases sd JOIN
sys.master_files mf on sd.dbid = mf.database_id
join sys.database_mirroring dm on sd.dbid = dm.database_id
The sp_spaceused procedure does a nice job on it's own giving me what I want (only one db though), plus a bonus allocated space column. How can I combine this sp with my other query, or is there a better way to ad this information?

Ok i am very new to the word of mirroring in sql 2005, i am trying to get it to work, i have 3 servers
my witness server
mirror server and then of course the principal server, all are completely different servers.
I have a copy of the db on the princapal and the mirror server (excatly the same, snapshot)
right click on the princapal db and go to properties choose mirroring run through the' configure security' wiarzd
it resolves all my other DB server as it should. (using the same sql authentication also tried windows intergrated)
when i start the mirror i get unable to start
This database has not been configured for mirroring
what am i not doing???
how do i configure this damn thing?
thanks

We have a database we are replicating to about 8 SQL Express subscribers from a SQL 2012 SP2 publisher. The size of the database grew too large for the 10GB license limit for SQL Express and now replication refuses to replicate any of our deletions on the publisher to reduce the size of the database. I've come up with a few options below.
1) Drop one of the larger table indices on the subscriber database to get below the size restriction. Permit the replication to replicate the deleted records and then rebuild the index. (I'm not sure how important an index is to this table. Is it merely performance related?)
2) "Upsize" SQL Express to SQL Standard on the affected boxes. Allow the deletes to replicate. Backup the database, downgrade to SQL Express and restore the database back to SQL a new SQL express instance. This would involve a lot of work on each box. I'd like to avoid it if possible.

I am having a bit of a mare on the database backup front - i.e. monster

As I do the backup, the file on the disk seems to stay at 2KB
How does the file get written? Is there a temp somewhere first?
Cheers in advance - Dave

I have a database I need to copy from a Prod server to a Dev server. There is not enough space on the Dev server. In looking at the size of the files on the Prod server, the Initial Size property for the transaction log on the Prod server is set to 100,000 MB though the log is using nowhere near that.
This is a mirrored database so the recovery model is "full". I know that to change the initial log size, I have to put the database in 'simple" recovery model. Is this possible? Can I just:
1. Pause the mirror
2. Switch recovery model to simple
3. Change the initial size property to something smaller.
4. Shrink the transaction log
5. Change the recovery model back to full and resume the mirror?
I honestly don't know if the transaction log is needed on the Dev server. Meaning I may just be able to restore the transaction log to a different location on the server and delete it so that new one is created.

db.[name] as 'Database Name',
af.[name] as 'Logical Name',
convert(decimal(12,2),round(size/128.000,2)) as FileSizeMB,

from sys.sysdatabases db

I have an existing Access database that I need to transfer over to a more powerful back-end due to the need for larger size capacity. We need to be able to have a backend that can exist up to just about any size due to us scanning in documents by ODBC. With Access I know I was limited to about 4gb size and when split onto my current SQL server I have heard I will be stuck at 10gb? If so can you recommend a better backend, but my question is about the front end. I hear Windows WPF can be linked into SQL server but does this limit the size as well?

Good evening all,
I am new to Microsoft SQL and have been dumped right into the deep end with an anchor around my ankles.
The problem I am experiencing is about 6 months back a guy setup a Microsoft SQL server at my client. He then took his bags and left. Then a developer developed an application which uses a database on this sql server. Everything worked well for around 4 months.
Yesterday IBM Director notified me that I am running dangerously low on disk space on the server. By the time I came in to work this morning I had 12mb free disk space. The evil thing here is the transaction log for the downtime database. It has grown to over 60gb, all because the correct measures were not implemented to prevent this.
The problem that is occuring is no one can do anything on the database now due to the lack of free space. I have tried reading the sql books online but due to my lack of sql experience and knowledge I am stuck.
Can someone please help me? What I would like to do is pull my transaction log down to an acceptable size.
I was thinking of creating a new database and then importing all the data from the current database and then just deleting the current database however am slightly concerned that this may result in some data being lost.
Thanks in advance,
Richard
