Jul 15, 2015Any specific risks in placing database files on network shares on a windows server (2008 R2). I have read its a bad design, but unsure why, or what problems such a setup may cause?

Maintenance Plans (2000), Remove Files Older Than, And Network Shares
Sep 21, 2007We have some to-disk backups scheduled on our 2000 Enterprise machine - nightly fulls, hourly logs - that go to a network share located on another machine. They were originally stored directly on the same machine as SQL Server, but we changed them to a remote destination within the past few weeks. This works okay, but despite having the maintenance plan set to remove files older than 2 days, old files don't seem to be removed. Understandably, this gets to be a problem when the backup disk becomes filled.
Is there any obvious reason why this option wouldn't work against a network share? I've checked the directory permissions, and the SQL Agent domain account should have no trouble deleting the files.

I had another server running Linux with enough space leftso i create a new partition on it and shared it through SAMBA.Now I can use this shared disk in RW mode from the SQL server (tested OK).However, when i try to create another database on this network share,SQLServer denies the operation.Does anybody have a clue about what's going on?Isn't it possible to set database files on a network share?Regards.CH COLLIN

Oct 29, 2007I'm having trouble trying to access a network share that comes via a UNIX server running SAMBA. In the first case, I'm running on my local workstation (A), connected to a remote server (B), and attempting to access directory information for a path like:
\a0amsimmsworkseaborg argets11as2981
This path is fully accessible by me from the workstation (A) and the server (B). The files and directories below "work" in the above path are also wide open on the UNIX side (meaning r-xr-xrwx permissions). However, if I attempt to do something like this:

The server B's sql server instance is running as a domain account (dbserver), which has been enabled for delegation and an spn has been set up. Is there something beyond this either with the impersonate or delegation configuration that I need to do in order for this to work?

Aspnetdb Is On A Network Path That Is Not Supported For Database Files
Sep 1, 2006I have two, probably related, problems:I have a very simple site. It will be used on the local intranet only. I want to use the windows authentication so users do not have to log on. The aspnetdb has been created using the configuration tool. If I use Server Explorer in vs to work on the site on my local machine, I can open aspnetdb, look at its tables, etc. If I use Server Explorer in vs to work on the site on the server, aspnetdb will not open and gives this error message: ..."network path that is not supported for database files"...Other sites on the same server give the same message, but the sites work. I think this is because they can read the file but not write it; but that is a guess. We have tried everything; my head is ready to explode. We are using SQLServerExpress. It resides on the server's C drive (as does our data database). The web site, and hence the aspnetdb are on the F: drive of the same machine. Does SQLServerExpress treat the F: drive as a UNC drive? If so, are we in deep doo doo? I'm at a loss.As far as logging in: If I debug from vs, the login works beautifully both on my local machine and running from the server using vs. Login does not work when accessing the site from iexplorer. Mystified by that one, too. I tried to implement profiles and they crash, too; that led me to consider a write problem.Don't know what to do; any help is appreciated.

OK. When I create a Login.aspx file in VWD Express on my local Hard Disk Drive, the file works and runs correctly, allowing
me to log in etc.
However, when I do exactly the same thing using a remote Network Drive connection to an Intranet server, when you enter the

How to do this.

Can Multiple Workstations Running SQL 2005 Server Express Attach To The Same Database Files On A Shared Network Location?
Mar 15, 2007Can multiple instances of SQL 2005 Express attach to the same database files on a network share? I have seen this done before with MSDE where the database files are stored on the server, but instead of having a SQL server running on the network and then connecting to it, only the database files exist on the network share and the users connect through MSDE running on the local machine. Is this possible with SQL2005Express? I do not have the ability to share an SQL instance from one workstation to another nor do I have the ability to install an instance on the corporate server. Is it as simple as creating the database and storing the files on the share then attaching the database to the SQL Instance on each workstation?

Mar 20, 2007We have a package that is using a ForEach loop container to access files on a network drive. For some reason I am getting a message that the ForEach enumerator is empty and did not find any files that matched the pattern. For the pattern I left the default *.* for testing purposes. I have specified the file folder as \remoteserverfilesharesubfolder and also as \remoteserverc$filesharesubfolder and have gotten the same message. However when I map a network drive and set the file folder to the network drive it finds the files. Is this a permissions issue?
After I finish processing the file I want to move it to a new directory. Once this is deployed in production, the package will not be running under a domain account and probably won't have access to the network folder. Is there any way to specifiy in the connection manager itself that it should use a specific account to access the folder?

SQL 2000 Fails To Delete Old Backup Files From The Network Share

I am experiencing an issue with SQL Server 2000 Maintenance Plan.
DB Backup job fails to delete old backup files from the file server (I am backing up to the network share - actually, a DFS).
Backup part of the maintenance plan/job succeeds, but then cleanup part fails.
I made sure that service account under which SQL Server Agent is running, has sufficient privileges over the network share by logging in and successfully deleting files in question.
I was not able to locate any log entries either on the SQL Server machine or on the file server machine that would indicate the root of the problem. Even though I turned on auditing for Delete operations for the destination folder, its subfolders and files, I could not find anything in the Security event log.
I would appreciate any ideas on how to troubleshoot and correct this problem.

SQL 2012 :: Access File Table Shares Exposed On A Server?
May 2, 2014I've been trying to access the file table shares exposed on a server (I can select, delete, update, etc via SQL) via untransacted access with no luck (the share just sits there doing something when I try to access it, no error message of any kind).
So I thought I'd look to see if there were any open file handles via
SELECT * FROM sys.dm_filestream_non_transacted_handles;
I found there were 10 non transacted handles open, and they've been open for 3 days for automated processes and the files are about 1-2Kb in size.
so I tried to kill them via
exec sp_kill_filestream_non_transacted_handles
that's normally not something that takes very long (in fact when I cleared two for a different database it took just a second or two).
So leaving the stored proc running, I figured I'd connect and fire up Adam Mechanic's sp_whoisactive.
I see the processes to kill the open file handles, with a wait state of FFT_NSO_FILEOBJECT

Aug 5, 2014I have a simple SSIS package that reads a flat file and copies it into a SQL Server table.
When the flat fiel is on the C drive I have no problem runnign this package from SQL Server Agent, but as soon as I update the path to a network location the package only works when I run it manually, but fails when is executed via the SQL Server agent job.
The error says "cannot open the datafile", while the datafile location is valid.
Is this a kind of limitation of a SQL Server Agent that only local files are allowed to be processed?

We have a Windows 2003 Web Edition server serving a site through IIS. It connects to a Windows 2003 Standard Edition server running SQL 2000 SP3a.
This site receives the following error as seen in the topic:

Any ideas or tips on solving this issue? We've noticed it is due to larger queries as smaller ones do work with no problems.
The servers are behind a BSD box running iptables, has 1433,1434 along with standard web ports wide open. Anything outbound is allowed.
Some further testing via ODBC on the IIS server improved things. No more connection pooling for the SQL Server driver allows for 1/3 of the query to run. Still 2/3s of it doesn't show up, and that general network error message appears.
Should have 330 rows if it works right.

Does somebody knows why?
I am running the DTS from a computer (not the server where the DTS is stored) and it is connected without any problem when this happens.

- SSL disabling enforce security false as mentioned in microsoft kb article.

General Network Error. Check Your Network Documentation
Jan 9, 2006I use sqlclient to connect directly from my mobile 5 pocketpc to a sql server 2005 database on my desktop.
I use a sqldatareader to traverse the results of a query that delivers 2 fields: (1) the filespec, and (2) the image field.
I use a filestream with a binary writer to write the contents of the image data to the pocketpc's storage card.
I have a test table with 10 images, not one more than 4 MB. I cannot complete a test run prior to receiving the general network error.
The pocketPC is connected via activesync to the desktop, and I connect to the database with:
Integrated Security=false;
user id=sa
password=admin.
Any help with this strange error would be greatly appreciated.

New Database On Other Local Network Drive

I need help with the setup of my sql server express 2005 and more specifically, with the location of the database files. Normally, database files are located on the c: drive. In my situation, being in a high school environnement, I need to have the database files on the network drive ... lets call it g:drive. The reason why it cannot be on c:drive is because this drive is protected using DeepFreeze. Now, I was able to change the location of the new drive as I went into the properties window of the sql server instance but when I try to create this new database, sql gives me grief ;-|
I am from the group of people that thinks that to anything, there is a solution and am hoping that to this problem, there is hope of a solution.
Can anyone help?

Backup Database Over Network Not Working.
Mar 16, 2004The database server is on computer P4.
Computer P3 has a shared folder with full access.
Computer P5 on which I have my Backup Device and will execute the Backup Database Command using Query Analyzer.
On P5 I created the Backup Device:
USE master
EXEC sp_addumpdevice 'disk', 'myDevice',
'\P3 emp est.bak'
Then I executed the following on P5 Query Analyzer:
Backup Database myDatabase TO myDevice
But I get this error:
Server: Msg 3201, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot open backup device 'myDevice'. Device error or device off-line. See the SQL Server error log for more details.
Server: Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.
Any idea? Thanks and regards.
Attach Database File Over The Network.

I have Sql Server in one pc and I want to attach one databse that is in another computer that doesnt have SQL Server. Sql Server doesnt permit UNC path when attaching database files. Is there anyway to workarounf this. Is Trace Flag 1807 of any use?

I have a Java application that gains access to a SQL database using:
connection="jdbc:jtds:sqlserver://localhost:1433/databasename;user="+user+";password="+password;
//Load and register SQL Server driver
Class.forName("net.sourceforge.jtds.jdbc.Driver");
//Establish the connection
conn=DriverManager.getConnection(temp);
When I distribute this application throughout the local network, what would the jdbc url be for the application to find the SQL server?
Should I replace "localhost:1433" with something else?
The instance of SQL server is called SQLExpress.
I have my computer name, computer domain, ip address etc.
Is the port 1433 still the same?
How could the SQL database be located throughout the network?
Any advice appreciated.
